A first win in six, a first clean sheet in eight – West Brom turned up at Anfield and failed to read the double Gameweek script. Steven Gerrard’s missed spot-kick compounded an evening of the unexpected, as Ben Foster’s inspired performance frustrated Liverpool and Fantasy managers alike. Here’s the Stock Check on Monday’s events…

On the Up

Ben Foster
A simply outstanding display by the Baggies stopper, capped by a stunning save from Steven Gerrard’s spot-kick. This was a first clean sheet in eight for Foster, a first away from home. With fixtures brightening for Steve Clarke’s side, we may yet see Foster build on tonight’s performance and start to attract Fantasy interest.

Gareth McAuley
The opening goal from McAuley, his second strike of the season, underlined his credentials as the luxury item in the West Brom defence – a proposition that has tempted few given their poor record of late. Like Foster, however, tonight’s returns may well earn him attention, particularly with the schedule presenting further opportunities for shut-outs in the coming weeks.

Romelu Lukaku
The big Belgian started the game on the bench as Steve Clarke bolstered his midfield with the return of Youssouff Mulumbu. Shane Long kept his start, then, but was overshadowed by the cameo role played by Lukaku late on. An early warning saw the Chelsea loanee threaten the goal, breaking from inside his own half, only for him to seal the victory with a superb first touch and calm finish just minutes later.

Going Down

Steven Gerrard
It’s harsh on Gerrard given Foster’s outstanding save, both from his second half effort and his penalty. Having said that, such is the competition for places in our midfields, failure to register points at home to Swansea on Sunday will surely see Gerrard suffer significant sales ahead of the Gameweek 27 blank, as the clamour for Gareth Bale, Theo Walcott and Juan Mata continues to build .

Luis Suarez
Brendan Rodgers decided against risking Daniel Sturridge, assuring us that “he should be okay” for Sunday’s meeting with Swansea. Suarez shifted back to a central attacking role, then, only to put on one of his least effective performances in memory. While Suarez won a rather dubious spot-kick, he contributed little else as the West Brom defence coped admirably with his movement and close control; an eighth booking of the season only compounded the frustration for Suarez’s owners.

The Liverpool Defence
They had look such a strong proposition ahead of home clashes with West Brom and Swansea and yet, following tonight’s setback, Brendan Rodgers’ back four have now conceded six goals in their last three. With a confident Swansea at Anfield on Sunday, suddenly our expectation of returns from the likes of Glen Johnson have taken a dent.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

SInce the pages are not flying around right now, icould use some advice:

    Q1.
    A)Sturridge and Gerrard > Bale and Lambert(-4
B)Fellaini and gerrard> Bale and Sissoko(-4) (Can still field 11 players)

    Q2.
    When do i get bale?

    A)Now @9.9
    B)After Europa games @ 10.0 probably
C)After the FA cup games @ 10.1 probably

No matter what happens on the 17th I am leaning towards keeping Michu and Suarez on my bench for GW 27. Have 2 frees and should get out a 4-4-2. Show of hands if anyone is keeping both? Michu is still too good of a value and Suarez has been consistent (for the most part).

Suarez & Aguero are causing big headaches for me in terms of continuing down the 3-5-2 route.

If you are going to play 3-5-2 then you want a big hitter (in form) to partner RVP. The obvious choices before Studge came and Man City went crap were always going to be Suarez & Aguero. Now I have zero faith in either to be honest. Nor do I want to trust people like Lambert or Benteke to give me hauls most weeks.

Is it time to revert back to 3-4-3 with Guthrie coming into MF and two decent mid-priced forwards coming in?

The striker played more times for Real than anyone else, 741 appearances, and scored more times for Real than anyone else, 323 goals.
A lethal finisher, still holds the European Cup goal scoring record with 71 to his name. He ran things on the pitch and ran them in the dressing room too.

Ugh! Should have wrapped up my UCL H2H yesterday, Stevie. A foster-like performance from Reina could still cost me.

Me: Michu and Gerrard + 9 points

Acqua, this is what i was talking about.
SAF first used this tactic as a rehearsal vs. Bale. And then again vs. Everton. Bale was a decent enough substitute compared to Ronnie.
    http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/21002574
    http://espnfc.com/en/gamecast/statistics/id/345651/statistics.html?soccernet=true&cc=4716

In that game, Tottenham(Bale in particular) was kept fairly quiet. We had done enough to make him do not much but take shots on goal from a distance. Quiet a few of which were blocked.

I don't even know why i am doing this because Ronnie on his day can eat anyone up. Nervous nervous nervous. But do not call him shit. He's been decent off late in that RCM role.

He's been very good actually. Phil Jones has been rubbish earlier, but I think he's done quite decently this season.

That aside this is going to be the most interesting game of the season tactically. Fergie can either deploy Jones as a midfielder to man mark Ronaldo or he's going to use Rooney to mark Alonso out of the game (like BVB did)

He'll do both. We will play on the counter i reckon. I have a suspicion Chicha and RVP will start upfront with Rooney and RVP on the top of a diamond. Kagawa puts a doubt in this thinking though because i see Carrick + 2 of Jones/Ando/Clevs starting in midfield.

I would say Jones is nailed on (in a Park Ji Sung way) for these sort of games. I reckon RVP will start up front alone with Rooney in the hole, while marking Alonso. If Chicharito starts, I reckon United will be too lightweight elsewhere though.

However, everybody and their dog can agree that United are going to set themselves up for a counter.

    Morning lads

So, will going for the old 3-5-2 as of GW27. Although I can afford more and thought of owning Pog sends a shiver up my spine I'm asking myself, is there any point in spending more for a slot I will never use.

I'd consider Ancihebe instead but the fact I may want someone to cover Fellaini GW29. Anichebe is useless for this purpose

I agree on Anichebe. But getting him essentially forces me to sell Fellaini for GW29. My current thinking for that week is to have 2FTs and spend on swapping Sturridge (tot) for Dzeko (WIG) then swap back

well Anichebe was subbed off injured at OT, and Jelly could threaten Anichebe's place. ALF is no threat to Pog as ALF himself admits he prefers to be used as in impact sub. I have also said above about my FTs. Want to save my GW28 transfer, then carry one over. But what do the fixtures look like for those 2, as Barfa or Sissoko could be tempting

always see suarez and Aguero called big hitters as if you have to have one of these two to partner RVP in a 352

I plan on 3-5-2 with RvP and Sturridge. Last night proved Sturridge's value to Pool. I'd consider Dzeko, but he's nailed on enough for a 2nd striker spot in a 3-5-2.

But I've nad this point before, about how people dismiss a player as a pick merely as there is someone more expensive available.

They are big hitters though aren't they......that's why they are priced so high. Suarez or Aguero ON THEIR DAY have the potential to score a lot of goals against any opposition. I'm afraid you can't say that about the mid-priced options.

As it happens neither is in form (bit harsh on Suarez perhaps) right now. So yeh it makes that description seem a bit daft

Too inconsistent + Sunderland don't score enough. I'm leaning towards Kebe/ Maloney to keep my options open next week (might punt on Aguero depsite shite form)

Assuming Pod rises I'll only have 0.1 to spare between now and GW28 to get Aguero in for free.

    Hey guys

Do you think its worth selling RVP,Schneiderlin,Neville and bringing in Michu,Hazard and Fletcher? It will take a couple of gameweeks to do this.Once i do it i can play in 3-5-2 formations with Michu,Bale,Gerrad,Hazard and Walcott as mid and Lambert,Sturiddge/Fletcher as forward.

Like many I'm looking to get rid of Suarez, and with Aguero and Cisse not looking particularly convincing are people now seriously considering Rooney in a United double up? Check out Uniteds fixtures: qpr, NOR, wha, RDG, sun, MCI, sot, AVL
