A first win in six, a first clean sheet in eight – West Brom turned up at Anfield and failed to read the double Gameweek script. Steven Gerrard’s missed spot-kick compounded an evening of the unexpected, as Ben Foster’s inspired performance frustrated Liverpool and Fantasy managers alike. Here’s the Stock Check on Monday’s events…

On the Up

Ben Foster
A simply outstanding display by the Baggies stopper, capped by a stunning save from Steven Gerrard’s spot-kick. This was a first clean sheet in eight for Foster, a first away from home. With fixtures brightening for Steve Clarke’s side, we may yet see Foster build on tonight’s performance and start to attract Fantasy interest.

Gareth McAuley
The opening goal from McAuley, his second strike of the season, underlined his credentials as the luxury item in the West Brom defence – a proposition that has tempted few given their poor record of late. Like Foster, however, tonight’s returns may well earn him attention, particularly with the schedule presenting further opportunities for shut-outs in the coming weeks.

Romelu Lukaku
The big Belgian started the game on the bench as Steve Clarke bolstered his midfield with the return of Youssouff Mulumbu. Shane Long kept his start, then, but was overshadowed by the cameo role played by Lukaku late on. An early warning saw the Chelsea loanee threaten the goal, breaking from inside his own half, only for him to seal the victory with a superb first touch and calm finish just minutes later.

Going Down

Steven Gerrard
It’s harsh on Gerrard given Foster’s outstanding save, both from his second half effort and his penalty. Having said that, such is the competition for places in our midfields, failure to register points at home to Swansea on Sunday will surely see Gerrard suffer significant sales ahead of the Gameweek 27 blank, as the clamour for Gareth Bale, Theo Walcott and Juan Mata continues to build .

Luis Suarez
Brendan Rodgers decided against risking Daniel Sturridge, assuring us that “he should be okay” for Sunday’s meeting with Swansea. Suarez shifted back to a central attacking role, then, only to put on one of his least effective performances in memory. While Suarez won a rather dubious spot-kick, he contributed little else as the West Brom defence coped admirably with his movement and close control; an eighth booking of the season only compounded the frustration for Suarez’s owners.

The Liverpool Defence
They had look such a strong proposition ahead of home clashes with West Brom and Swansea and yet, following tonight’s setback, Brendan Rodgers’ back four have now conceded six goals in their last three. With a confident Swansea at Anfield on Sunday, suddenly our expectation of returns from the likes of Glen Johnson have taken a dent.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

    2 questions

    1) Thoughts on Anichebe? worried about his nailed-oness and by his injury

    2) Any Fellaini owners planning to keep beyond the blank, fixtures don't look that good

      1) wait til next week to hear about his injury. as your 8th attacker/bench fodder most weeks i wouldn't worry too much. if fit i think he should be fine at least the next couple weeks. two good fixtues coming up so everton double could be good

      2) i shipped him this week in a hit afro + demel > sissoko + enrique. broke even atm with enrique still having a game to go. would have liked to have him for the next two fixtures but wouldn't really want him past that...

Afro owner and totally unsure he'll keep his spot. With a smaller squad Everton seems to be wearing down a bit. But with other pressing concerns I certainly will have to keep him until the blank at least.

So enough Liverpool sulking... how about this giant dreadlocked beast from West Brom who seems to score at will! Is anyone interested in lukaku considering his fixtures, I suspect he could go on a run... this game is a turning point for Brom after their last 10 games

    @Unreal

Did you see the TMNT films? Not the animated and 3D ones, the live-action ones back in the 90's.

There's a new live-action film in the works to be released next year. Sad to say, Michael Bay is the director.

toon fixtures starting gw 27 until the end of the season:

SOT, swa, STO, wig, mci, FUL, SUN, wba, LIV, whu, qpr, ARS

and I fancy one or both of hba/sissoko for those that were asking. not too sure about cisse... if he starts banging them in then i'll find a way to get him but not too convinced right now... hba is on penalties too i believe and had a cracking finish to last season so those factors are tempting. if i was getting him i might wait a few weeks to see how he fits in and how he gets back up to speed, etc though

Cabaye Cisse and HBA tore it up at the end of last season. With the Goufron on the other wing it would be a very 'creative' midfield. Sissoko doesn't fit that mould. He's more of a Yaya type of player who is naturally more of a box to box type.

Is it too early to do Gerrard > Kebe before Kebe rises?

It allows me the option of Pod > Aguero in GW28 for free. Not saying I'll 100% get him, but still leaves it an option.

Kebe is also a great bench fodder and has a decent fixture next week WIG(H)

I think Torres will be gone in the summer.

      Leaves them with:

      (new purchase)
      Ba
      Lukaku

They need to find a manager who can utilize all 3.

The overall balance of the squad will still be weighed in favor of the midfield imo. You can get away with playing just one striker of the 3 when there are midweek games to play the other and having the out of form striker comming on off the bench in most games. It just works better. Besides 4231 is the popular formation these days. Its quite rare for teams to go 442

I have 2FT's this week and have to sell Suarez and Enrique. Who in your opinion are the best options

    DEF

    Santon
    Debuchy
Wilson (already have bego but might sell eventually)
    Dawson
    Rafael
    Azpilicueta

    ATT

    Cisse
    Aguero
    Dzeko
Rooney (already have RVP, left with 5m for a defender)
    Benteke
    Giroud (already have Walcott)

Yes. Villa are awful in the air which matches Giroud perfectly. I assume he's made cf his with his recent performances. Probably Lambert after that.

Was considering Rooney but am looking at the Gi now.

Lambert after that possibly, Benteke's proving useful as the main goalscorer in a struggling team though. Seems to get loads of penalties.

thanks Isacki. luckily i'll have another week then to try to evaluate lambert vs dzeko vs benteke.

do you think it'd be worth a hit to ship marv for any mid up to 7.3? if confirmed fit i could get hba and go with the follow front 8 at least for the time being. newcastle have good fixtures and it'd allow me to evaluate which of hba/sissoko is the better option.

        mata bale walcott hba sissoko
        rvp studge giroud/replacement

or i could take a hit for any other mid 7.3 or less?

Quite tempting actually but I'm usually wary of gambling on players who haven't started yet since injury, particularly when the team has changed since. Fitness and form might take a little while.

There aren't a huge number of alternatives though, so that might be a good bet for now.

            that's my only concern.

alternatively if i went immediately for lambert or benteke I could afford a mid up to 8.7 (lambert) or 8.5 (benteke) in that case lamps and afro would fit the bill (and michu after the blank...) but then i think i'd have even more of a benching headache

Oh you'll be without fellaini or michu? I'd definitely look at spending the extra cash on one of them.

Benching headaches are good, much better than having a thin squad. Fixture rotation becomes a doddle.

I actually think he's an excellent finisher...he's just a poor shooter. He can finish really well when he's through one on one. It's when he tries to shoot from absurd angles and with no real idea what he's doing like last night. He'd just shoot for the hell of it and completely slice it.

He will be in his element when Sturridge returns. Suarez is always better playing in behind a natural finisher/striker

He is a natural finisher though, have you seen how many goals Suarez has scored in his career? The problem is he's not your typical striker as you say. He is pretty unconcerned about working the keeper with his shots...it's like he just shoots and tries to score some absurdly good goal but it often goes wrong.

Pfffft 'natural finisher' my arss. Probably has one of the lowest shot conversion rates in the world.

And on your earlier statement, any half decent footballing strikers will finish 1v1 vs a keeper

He offers much more than his relatively ordinary finishing ability (still not too bad). He's a creative player and these players are often valuable assisters as well as goal scorers. Liverpool will get more out of him when he doesn't play as a striker imo

No, too subjective. You want nice easily defined rules like last touch etc.

People can still argue over that, mind 🙄

It should do in my opinion. They should also award bonus points for new and silly haircuts, daft goal celebrations, over-head kicks and goals scored from within defending halves. And there should be minus points for dives, going nose-to-nose in silly hand-bag theatricals and doing the shhh celebration after scoring goals.

After a long few GWs, I'm quite confused. Lots of questions on my mind at this point of time.

    A. To get De Gea or not?

    B. To get Sissoko over Fellaini?

    C. Keep Suarez, or get Sturridge?

    D. Get City cover, or not?

Nope... it's all been one big set-up just for you, like the Truman Show. The real Liverpool won 4-0 an Suarez got 3 with the 3 assist from Gerrard. Madonna played at the half-time show.. it was quite good
