A first win in six, a first clean sheet in eight – West Brom turned up at Anfield and failed to read the double Gameweek script. Steven Gerrard’s missed spot-kick compounded an evening of the unexpected, as Ben Foster’s inspired performance frustrated Liverpool and Fantasy managers alike. Here’s the Stock Check on Monday’s events…

On the Up

Ben Foster
A simply outstanding display by the Baggies stopper, capped by a stunning save from Steven Gerrard’s spot-kick. This was a first clean sheet in eight for Foster, a first away from home. With fixtures brightening for Steve Clarke’s side, we may yet see Foster build on tonight’s performance and start to attract Fantasy interest.

Gareth McAuley
The opening goal from McAuley, his second strike of the season, underlined his credentials as the luxury item in the West Brom defence – a proposition that has tempted few given their poor record of late. Like Foster, however, tonight’s returns may well earn him attention, particularly with the schedule presenting further opportunities for shut-outs in the coming weeks.

Romelu Lukaku
The big Belgian started the game on the bench as Steve Clarke bolstered his midfield with the return of Youssouff Mulumbu. Shane Long kept his start, then, but was overshadowed by the cameo role played by Lukaku late on. An early warning saw the Chelsea loanee threaten the goal, breaking from inside his own half, only for him to seal the victory with a superb first touch and calm finish just minutes later.

Going Down

Steven Gerrard
It’s harsh on Gerrard given Foster’s outstanding save, both from his second half effort and his penalty. Having said that, such is the competition for places in our midfields, failure to register points at home to Swansea on Sunday will surely see Gerrard suffer significant sales ahead of the Gameweek 27 blank, as the clamour for Gareth Bale, Theo Walcott and Juan Mata continues to build .

Luis Suarez
Brendan Rodgers decided against risking Daniel Sturridge, assuring us that “he should be okay” for Sunday’s meeting with Swansea. Suarez shifted back to a central attacking role, then, only to put on one of his least effective performances in memory. While Suarez won a rather dubious spot-kick, he contributed little else as the West Brom defence coped admirably with his movement and close control; an eighth booking of the season only compounded the frustration for Suarez’s owners.

The Liverpool Defence
They had look such a strong proposition ahead of home clashes with West Brom and Swansea and yet, following tonight’s setback, Brendan Rodgers’ back four have now conceded six goals in their last three. With a confident Swansea at Anfield on Sunday, suddenly our expectation of returns from the likes of Glen Johnson have taken a dent.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

I was, wasnt as bad as when Slurridge didn't feature in the line-ups.

Btw, 3 points for me last night.... Suarez (c), Gerrard and GJ

I was having a gut feeling about Gerrard scoring a hatty against West Brom, but i took a safe route of (C) Suarez. Still got 1 point thou. 🙂

Liverpool without Sturridge will be sh*te... as always. Sturridge brings the pace of the game as fast as possible giving roam to Gerrard and Suarez. 🙂

I was thinking atleast Liverpool would get a cleanie. 🙁

Think it was less about missing Sturridge as they scored loads of goals before he arrived, and more about changing from a working 4-3-3 to 4-2-3-1 to accommodate him, then playing it WITHOUT him.

Haha I'm fine, I've seen much worse weeks. Was mainly let down by Suarez (C) and GJ, had Sturridge already since the wc so didn't bring him in and was expecting better returns from Suarez (C) in the cf role so wasn't too bothered. Unfortunately pool didn't make their 4-2-3-1 work.

They've got to play better against Swansea. But it'll only be an open game if Swansea choose to make it open instead of defending away in a 4-5-1 like they have so far this year. In that case, it's gonna be tighter than Elvis' crotch. Lovely analogy... I think.

Mentally I've written off the GW as an average one, any improvement will be a pleasant surprise.

    from last page:

    that’s my only concern.

alternatively if i went immediately for lambert or benteke I could afford a mid up to 8.7 (lambert) or 8.5 (benteke) in that case lamps and afro would fit the bill (and michu after the blank…) but then i think i’d have even more of a benching headache

Is it too early to do Gerrard > Kebe before Kebe rises? (Other transfer is Suarez > RVP)

It allows me the option of Pod > Aguero in GW28 for free. Not saying I’ll 100% get him(May opt for Jecko) but still leaves it an option.

Kebe is also a great bench fodder and has a decent fixture next week WIG(H)

    Gives me this next week:

    Bunn/Bego
    Martin, Harte, Demel
    Bale, Mata, Walcott, Kebe
    RVP, Podolski, Lambert

It all depends on which mid I bring in. I have 7.4 to bring in 1 mid this week. Whoever i bring in will affect who I will be able to bring in for Podolski for GW28?

make sense? So basically 15.5 for a mid+ forward, but the forward would come in after GW27

    2 frees: Sturridge>Lambert and Davies>Cuellar to field a 4-4-2 ...opinions?

This gives me funds to do Punchy>Sissoko for next week only (for my first ever hit) and address benching issues the week after.

With Tremmel not playing Bunn comes off the Bench for him and Bale becomes his captain and suddenly he jumps to 75 points while I am stuck on 70 points...

Dzeko's surely in form, he's going nowhere out of the team. But tbf, Aguero hasn't looked too bad, he's got the spark to create chances. The only thing about Aguero is, that he's not getting behind the defenses of a given team. I think it's got to be tactical.

I havent been watching Man City games... But based on the reviews I read, Dzeko might have scored a few goals but none of the experts rated him as a good team player...

With Mancini saying that he will cut people who are not committed to the cause, Dzeko might be in danger of losing his place...

Well this is based on only what I have read, so dont curse me if I am wrong...

Big changes sounds like more than just changing the strikers round, he's done that all year and it's not exactly been a roaring success. Aguero hasn't been the same as last year but it's been as much about the midfield being non functional as anything.

City once again were pressed mercilessly in midfield just like they were in Europe, and barely could pass. Something like Barry being dropped and more men in the middle might be the way forward. Perhaps a return to 4-2-3-1 or even a new formation.

I can get Rooney+ Fellaini, and upgrade Pod > Aguero/ Jecko next week (for a hit though)
