As revealed last night, we’ve struck a deal with the guys over at TotelFootball which will take in the remainder of this season’s Champions League. With the next round of matches comprising the four fixtures over this Tuesday and Wednesday, we take a look at the options on offer for our squads ahead of this evening’s deadline.

As per the rules of the competition, our team must be lined up in a 4-4-2 formation, with a further four warming the bench in a 15 man squad. You can pick up to two players per team, though if you exceed this allocation, you will be deducted five points per player over that quota.

With only eight teams to choose from, striking a balance is tricky. If you choose to go without points hits, you’ll need two players from seven teams and one player from the remaining club. The deadline is 7.45pm, though, meaning we can tinker with our picks for tonight’s two games after the official squad lists are rolled out – a real advantage for those favouring the hands-on approach.

Last 16: Week 2 Selections

Looking at the results from week 1’s matches, it’s intriguing to see that not one of the four hosts either clinched victory or returned a clean sheet. Indeed, only one club managed to keep out their opponents, as Juventus racked up a 3-0 triumph at Celtic Park.

Arsenal’s home clash with Bayern looks likely to afford us goals. While much has been made of the visitors’ phenomenal away record in the Bundesliga (10 wins and a draw from 11 games, 27 goals for, with one against) they did, however, clinch victory in just one of their away matches in the group stages and were beaten 3-1 on the road by Bate Borisov. Theo Walcott’s domestic form makes him impossible to ignore, while Franck Ribery also gets the nod in midfield. We’re doubling up on the visitors, though, and opting for Philipp Lahm’s threat from the back for tonight’s encounter.

Porto’s home record in the group stages affords us a little more confidence. They won all three games in front of their own fans, though visitors Malaga avoided defeat in all of their away matches, with a win and two draws. Porto full-back Danilo has played the last five and provided an assist in their final group match with PSG, while Lucho Gonzalez has chipped in with two goals and a pair of assists from midfield. Isco gets the nod for the visitors – he’s also bagged a couple of goals and two assists and is our preferred Malaga midfield option with Eliseu out injured.

Milan’s home clash with Barcelona is trickier to call. The hosts have won each of their last six at the San Siro in Serie A, while Barca have wobbled a little in the league on their travels, with just one away win in three. Nevertheless, we’re handing Jordi Alba a place at left-back and giving Lionel Messi one of our two forward slots for this one. Milan’s raiding right-back Mattia De Sciglio gets the nod, with the hope he can offset any possible goals conceded with an assist or two.

Galatasaray will be buoyed by the signings of Didier Drogba and Wesley Sneijder ahead of their home clash with Schalke. Drogba grabbed a goal and assist on his debut the other day and while Schalke impressed on the road in the group stages, they have picked up two points from their last six away games in the Bundesliga – affording the hosts plenty optimism here. Fernando Muslera is our keeper of choice, while Burak Yilmaz’s six goals in the group stages are enough to earn our vote.

You seem to be able to submit up to 6 teams.

You win/lose based on points scored just like FPL, only it's a one week competition.

At least I think that's how it works 🙂

In terms of FPL strategy, it would be interesting to see the overall point gains/losses of players that have gone down the hit-heavy route.

i.e score of the two/three players you took out for hits versus the two/three you brought in and see over the season whether those hits have equalled a gain or a loss. I'm talking about it's immediate success by the way...hits can of course work out long term so therefore can't instantly be deemed a failure/succes. But it'd be interesting to see all those one week gambles calculated over an entire season...if that makes sense.

Yeah, but as you say, hits are often taken for long term benefit, and therefore any comparison would be fundamentally flawed.

There is more than that. If you take hits, it also enables a transfer you were going to make later happen earlier. Its inconsequential in my opinion. One choice takes your team to one route and the other to another. There on wards, you really can't look back at how things would have panned out. So a bad decision i made may have led to me making a great decision which i wouldn't have made if i did not make the earlier bad decision.

A Bayern official said today that they have 85 ex-academy players at other European clubs (playing in Divisions 1 and 2 of their national leagues). Very impressive, only comparable with probably United, Barca, Real in terms of former youth players going on to make it elsewhere.

So I guess Rooney is 4th choice for United because he wasnt listed at all yesterday? Tevez scored a tap in, he wasnt instrumental in the game at all. Mancini wont (or at least shouldnt) drop Dzeko, his best striking option based on current form, because City scored a couple of times against Leeds (which was largely down to Toure being back, not tevez). Remember, Tevez hasnt scored a league goal since 1st December.

Its only a risk if they dont perform, thing you have to remember about Dzeko is he is one of the best impact subs in the game. Not sure why im trying to convince people to get my star differential lol, guess I just dont appreciate the Dzeko hate

He used the Tevez-Aguero when chasing the title this time last season to devastating effect, I'd imagine he'll revert back to that as soon as possible.

We don't know for sure yet, but my guess would be that their GW29 blank becomes no longer a blank with the fixture moved to the midweek of GW29.

Chances on Shaw and Demel playing?

    Begovic
    Demel Shaw Cameron
    Noble Mata Bale Sissoko
    RVP

    Michu Suarez Davies Sturridge Enrique

1FT. Any suggestions on what to do? 🙁

Blank gw ahead, Benteke & Lambert better value considering price tag. Plus you can't get a decent forward with 6.4m (see above).

Was thinking about a strikeforce of RVP-Suarez-Dzeko, but with Dzeko you'll just never know if he'll start. Yes, he can give you points from the bench, but it's risky.

Currently my strikeforce of choice will be RVP-Aguero-Sturridge. Better balance and overall gametime.

What strikeforce are others thinking of from now till end of season?

Real issue is will Tevez play games and get starts, simple answer for me is yes. He was only not involved against Soton because of personal reasons. And whose place will he take if he gets those starts, almost certainly Dzeko as Aguero is the main man. Therefore it's not particularly tempting right now.

Yeah, have a feeling you could well be right. And those are the 3 to chose from this week.

Have a feeling RVP is still the way to go. Rested, on set pieces and focal point of attack of the highest scoring team in the league, versus rock bottom.

They definitely won't be played when they were scheduled as FA cup games are then.

Yet to be re-scheduled so have been removed for the moment. Could well be returned to the same gw as midweek games.
