This season I’ve taken pride in my powers of recovery. The ability to bounce back from a Gameweek of misery with a plucky display seven days later. The upper lip has remained stiff on my face of adversity.

Right now, it’s quivering with my chin scraping the floorboards of my two-up, two-down grief pit.

Motivated by the need for differentials to help claw back a mini-league deficit, I chose to cuddle up to Dimitar Berbatov and Fernando Torres, despite knowing all too well that the allure of Robin Van Persie and Carlos Tevez was beautifully placed to return bigger profits.

Their Scout Pick selection spelled it out to me – bringing them in made perfect sense. But in the context of my mini-league, there was another perspective; spending points to match my rivals’ team took the shine off the obvious route to success.

By four o’clock the true horror of that decision was apparent. Once again I paid the price for being clever – for ignoring the big picture, for turning my back on the bleedin’ obvious.

This pain is not all self-inflicted this time – I can at least proportion some blame to good old-fashioned bad luck.

With Rafael Van der Vaart as captain, my returns could have been handsome. If only he’d converted his second spot-kick, or indeed had Mark Clattenburg handed Spurs a third. While Van der Vaart clogged his penalty re-take to punish my points tally, Tevez, sporting the armband from my rivals, gorged on a brace of spot-kicks to earn a hat-trick. Agony – absolute agony.

Adding further insult, and extinguishing any hopes of a second-half revival, Van der Vaart failed to appear for the second-half. A calf injury apparently. He couldn’t have been hurting as much as me. Van der Vaart might be fit for Gameweek 27 – I’m not sure I will be.

So there you have it – enjoy Match of the Day. There were lots of goals apparently.

As for me, I’ll give Arsene a call. Arsene and me. In the pub, in the corner. I’m drowning it all in the local brew; he’s got his large glass of red. Don’t you dare tell us to cheer up.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

I have VDV too and might even do:-

                VDV to Walcott
Djouru to Huth (or BIR defender if I decide to punt on ARS/TOT in GW 28).

            I got Nolan in yesterday.

But that was only because I knew he was going up in price last night and I want to see if I can make some money on some players this week.

Always my intention to get Barton as it will be the 5th mid slot and £6+m is too much to spend on a bench position most weeks.

Was mulling this as a defensive move as the person blow me in 2nd in my league has Odem, but it seems a waste so going to stick with DJ. Even though Blackpool are collapsing, they are still scoring freely, although I admit WBA have the better fixtures.

Anyone considering bringing Lennon in if VDV is confirmed out for the first game. Lennon looks as if he is getting back to his best and could be a good option for the DGW, particularly if Defoe can wake up a bit. They were a devastating pairing at times last season.

Was thinking Walcott to for VDV, and still might, but already have Fab and RVP, which could be a devastating combo. However, would rather spread my risk about a bit and being a Spurs fan..

Time to ditch Rafael, he looked decent going forward, but defending doesnt seem to be his forte, He'll be sharing RB with O'Shea, so not worth the risk! As Spurs dont keep cleansheets away from home, a Brum Def seems the only option! Johnson or Ridgewell?

Since when will he be sharing with O'Shea?

He missed last GW due to concussion and suspension previos to that. Before that, he established himself as a first team regular and nailed down the RB spot.

Uniteds defence is solid when Ferdinand + Vidic play. Evans played yesterday and Smalling the week before at Blackpool, hence the defensive frailties.

Rafael @ ~5m is still a steal and a cheap route into one of the best defences in the league.

I'd hold on to Rafael. Birmingham not exactly watertight this season and the've regressed since Dann got injured.

Utd defence, esp at home, still your best bet for cleanie points and Mr Da Silva still Sir Alex's 1st choice right back.

I am confused. Birmingham have played 24, 25 after todays game.

13 fixtures left but only 12 down.

Which fixture is TBC? I cant find any other team that needs an extra fixture?

Anyone else concerned by Fabs' returns?
Was really annoyed seeing ARS got 4 and his wasn't involved, playing quite deep doesn't help either I suppose but Arsenal do have good mids going forward and could keep playing him that way, sin't it?

I agree, he's playing very deep and even though he's still making runs forward, they're few and far between. He's too costly for the returns he's giving. You pay that price for a player you'd pick as a captain but at the moment there are 4/5 other players that are ahead of him....bar this week!

    Hey guys,

Have 2 free transfers this week and thinking of doing Rooney & N'Zog -> Fabs & Wingie. With my squad below is that a good plan, AND, is it worth taking any point hits to bring in more doublers? I will only have 7 if i do the above, and 2 of them (VDV & Djourou) may be injured....

    Foster, Stockdale
    Djourou, Rafael, Kelly, Coleman, Bosingwa
VDV, Nani, Adam, A Young, N'Zogbia
    Rooney, RVP, Tevez
    Bank 0.7m

    Cheers!

im sure many have this dilemma, VDV owners. GW27 looks like this:

    Szczesny

    Huth, Carr, Simpson (Kelly, Coleman)

    Fabregas, VDV, Adam, Nani, Brunt

    RVP, Tevez (Berbatov)

so after setting up for 9 DGWers, down to 8. Afraid to sell VDV, his price would have to drop 5 times before Id break even to get him back. Cant sell nani for same reason. Wouldnt lose much on Berbatov, so is there a DGW forward worth dropping him for, Campbell, Defoe, Odemwingie(rather not w/brunt already)? Do i continue to keep VDV in over berbs for tottenhams 2nd game against blackpool?

think i would just keep that fronline, as the only good dgw option is Odem, and i think doubling up on Wesbrom is too much..

Maybe VdV to Lennon could be a reasonable shout. I never hang on to those "out for a couple of weeks at least" players, it almost never pays off in my experience, the points you lose is not worth the money you save normally

to be fair, he's quoted to be out at least half of one EPL GW. which means even if he missed blackpool, hes only out for one GW.

Imho, you would be better served by transferring Ban der Vaart to Silva immediately, for instance, because in 2 - 3 weeks you will be able to pick him up .3 cheaper than he is now. In the meantime, you will have solve one of your GW 28 problems ...

if i sold him now, it would be for 8.6, like i said earlier, his price would have to drop 5 times just to break even, and i do have a plan already to field a full 11 for GW28, without hits, that would have VDV on the bench anyway.
