Gareth Bale is amongst the goals yet again as Tottenham get the better of Inter at the Lane. A lacklustre Chelsea are beaten in Bucharest, Newcastle register a goalless draw with Anzhi but are set to be without Fabricio Coloccini for a number of weeks, Daniel Sturridge is back for Liverpool this weekend, while Shane Long is a doubt for West Brom’s home game with Swansea:

Tottenham 3 Inter 0
Andre Villas-Boas’ side continued their impressive form by sweeping aside their Italian visitors last night. The Spurs boss made three changes from the side that saw off Arsenal at the Lane last Sunday – Hugo Lloris and Michael Dawson dropped out for Brad Friedel and William Gallas at the back, while Jermain Defoe led the line with Emmanuel Adebayor still recovering from the knee problem that forced him off on Sunday.

While Gareth Bale hogged the headlines once more with a goal and assist, Gylfi Sigurdsson continued his renaissance on the Tottenham left. The Icelandic international mirrored Bale’s returns before making way for Lewis Holtby with 20 minutes – having notched a goal and assist in his last couple of league games, he is finally starting to suggest he’s ready to hold down a first-team role after a slow start to life at the Lane. Jan Vertonghen served a reminder of his threat from the back by nodding home the hosts’ third to leave Villas-Boas’ side with a commanding first-leg lead – they will be without Bale for the second leg in the San Siro, though, as the Welshman is set to serve a one-match ban after receiving his third caution of the tournament. The only downside for Villas-Boas from last night’s match was the late withdrawal of Aaron Lennon with what appeared to be a hamstring knock. Having started every one of Spurs’ 28 league matches, any possible absence would be a bitter blow for the flying winger – we should hopefully get further prognosis in this afternoon’s press conference.

Anzhi 0 Newcastle 0
With a crucial home clash against Stoke on the horizon, Alan Pardew made seven changes from the side that lost narrowly at Swansea for yesterday’s trip to Russia. Rob Elliott, Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa Elsewhere, Yohan Cabaye and Moussa Sissoko were the four to retain their places – with Papiss Cisse missing out through illness, Hatem Ben Arfa was intriguingly handed the lone forward role upon his return from a long-term hamstring injury, though Pardew did admit beforehand he was concerned the synthetic surface could pose problems for Shola Ameobi’s ongoing knee issue. Ameobi replace the Frenchman just after the hour mark, while Steven Taylor came on with quarter of an hour left in what was a hugely uneventful match.

Post-match, Pardew admitted he would utilise Ben Arfa as a lone forward role again, if necessary:

“Hatem lasted longer than I thought and did well given he is not fit. I have thought about using him there before because if I was a centre-back he is the last person I would want to see with the ball at his feet. And I would certainly consider it again.”

Prior to the game, Pardew was left reeling from the news that Fabricio Coloccini is set to be sidelined with the back problem sustained in Gameweek 27 against Swansea. The Magpies boss has admitted his skipper could be missing for up to two months:

“Colo has gone back to Argentina. There’s no treatment he can have – he’s broken two of the bones in his back. We think it’s going to be anything between three and seven weeks. He’s gone back for a week.”

With Tim Krul also out due to an ankle injury, Pardew’s defensive problems are starting to rack up but luckily his winter transfer spree has come in handy. Yanga-Mbiwa now looks likely to be given the platform to secure a regular role alongside Steven Taylor in the heart of defence, though priced at 4.9 in FPL, he still will set you back more than Steven Taylor’s 4.6.

Steaua Bucharest 1 Chelsea 0
Rafa Benitez also made a number of changes ahead of Sunday’s FA Cup trip to Old Trafford. Cesar Azpilicueta and Ashley Cole dropped out of the back-four – Branislav Ivanovic moved to right-back as John Terry returned, while Ryan Bertrand was also afforded a start. With Ramires rested from the trip, John Obi Mikel joined Frank Lampard in the double-pivot, while Yossi Benayoun – fit again after an ankle injury – replaced Juan Mata in the attacking midfield three. Up top, Fernando Torres got the nod as Demba Ba is ineligible to feature. Benitez made a couple of substitutions during the course of the defeat; Eden Hazard was replaced by Marko Marin with 15 minutes left, while Benayoun made way for Mata just after the hour mark.

In Other News
Daniel Sturridge has been passed fit and is available for selection once again ahead of Liverpool’s home game with Spurs this weekend. The Reds’ assistant boss Colin Pascoe revealed to the press yesterday:

“He’s looking good. It was his first day training today and he has trained well. He will be available for Sunday. Everyone seems fit and raring to go and we can’t wait for Sunday.”

Having missed two of the last three, including last Saturday’s win over Wigan, Sturridge has been sold by over 14,000 FPL managers heading into the weekend – despite only 12 teams taking to the field this time round. Luis Suarez looks set for a change in role once again, with the Uruguayan tucking in behind Sturridge as Brendan Rodgers moves back to a 4-2-3-1 to accommodate the former Chelsea man in the starting line-up. Having scored or assisted in all five of his league appearances, Sturridge will no doubt receive plenty new investors after yesterday’ news – with Liverpool visiting three of the bottom five in addition to a home clash with West Ham this weekend, there’s plenty potential for further attacking points.

Shane Long is the only doubt for West Brom’s home clash with Swansea. Steve Clarke revealed the Irishman is struggling to overcome an ankle injury picked up during last Saturday’s game at Chelsea:

“The unfortunate thing for us is that Shane Long, who played last week with a bad ankle, has aggravated his ankle through the weekend. He trained Monday and Tuesday but unfortunately didn’t train today. He is doubtful for tomorrow – and the weekend as well. That’s a bit of a loss for us. Although, I’m ever the optimist and I haven’t ruled him out of the weekend yet.”

The news certainly eases any lingering fears for Romelu Lukaku’s Fantasy owners as the Baggies look to avenge their defeat at the hands of Michael Laudrup’s side earlier this season. Clarke’s habit of alternating the two for starting roles has played havoc with the Belgian’s game time, though with eight starts in the last 10, he has started to look a Hawthorns regular in recent weeks. Clarke has also revealed Chris Brunt has recovered from the ankle injury that kept him out of last week’s game, while Claudio Yacob, Steven Reid and Jonas Olsson are all fit and raring to go after shrugging off midweek knocks.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

struggling with my FT’s so need some advise

    bunn (ddg)
davies cueller harte — onouha baines —
michu bale wally — maloney fellaini —
    rvp sturridge benteke

Planning to take out a mid + def (fellaini/maloney/onouha/baines) >> xxx + xxx but not sure which mid and def to take out. I really want mata for gw30 onwards. Which combo do you prefer

    A: any def upto 6.4 + onouha + sissoko + mata
    B: baines + wilson + maloney + sissoko (then sissoko > mata in gw30)
    C: debuchy + onouha + fellaini + sissoko (then sissoko > mata in gw30)
    D: baines + wilson + maloney + sissoko (then sturridge >suarez in gw30

    Shameless repost:

Just starting to look at my transfers this week, planning to get a midfielder in (I only have 2 available as it stands) but there’s such a paucity of options I’m really struggling to see who’s worth using a transfer on. Michu (Swansea don’t score away and West Brom are tight at home), Snodgrass? N’Zogbia? Sessegnon? Taarabt? Meh. 😕

They aren't *that* bad.. N'Zogbia has good form and Snodgrass isn't the worst option especially at home to Southampton with all set-pieces. I'd rather get as many players as I can for free and have a chance of points rather than cop a 0.

    So my defence is currently:

    Zabaleta, Evans, Demel, Wilson, Pearce.

Need to get rid of one of Zaba and Evans unfortunately as I have zilch in the bank.

Evans (& Utd) has the better fixtures, but Evans is clearly going to be rotated.

Zaba - more nailed on but tougher fixtures.

Who would you give the chop to?

This would be for a hit as well.

If planning on playing a 3-4-3 (Like most of us are I assume), are there really any decent 5th mids left in the game that haven’t gone way up in price or aren't just 2 pointer players?

Have previously had and got rid of Sterling and Puncheon and am now stuck with Guthrie and it doesn’t seem there’s anybody worth replacing him with!

So, anyone else playing the famous 5-2-3 formation this weekend?! For those fielding only a handful of players I think the saving grace might be that its likely to be a low scoring gameweek and hence won't lose much ground. Frankly Id be happy to hit 40.

Not sure if anyone feels like advising a player whose 17th in the world and stuck!

The question is; how to get rid of Leighton Baines? I have one free transfer left, and two options:

    1) Sub him out on my free transfer for a cheapie whose playing this week. Already have Harrte so probably Martin, Dawson, STaylor, someone like that.

    2) Bench him, and sub him out for Zabaleta/Evra when I find out which one has their double gameweek first.

What do people think? Get the cheapie now or the extra "heavy hitter" fixture later?

Yeah. Its basically standard procedure, atleast on United`s behalf. The last 3rd of the season they always tighten ship. I was set on getting Evans, but seeing as Vidic and Rio are fit again i guess im conceded to getting Rafael just like all the rest.. Have to do some major cuts if i were to get on from each though.

      Don't be so modest 😉

I'm personally doing Onuoha for Martin with Enrique, Zaba Harte and Wilson so I'm in a similar position and have given it some thought.

Martin works really well for you over the next few weeks given the defenders you have - you could make an argument for playing him 5 times in the next 6 given your current line-up, especially since you can't guarantee Wilko will play.

For this reason I'd recommend doing Baines > Martin now and not having to worry about picking from Evra/Zaba until GW33 at least. It also frees significant funds, giving you more flexibility over the next few weeks.

        Good advice, thank you.

You've convinced me that Martin is probably the best option, so if I do it I'll go for him.

I just have a sneaking suspicion that one of these doubles is going to be dumped on us at short notice, probably City and Wigan, and I have none of their players. I'll mull it over.

"The issue you're all going on about in the papers is absolute rubbish. I've banned two papers from the press conference and they won't get back in here until they apologise. There is absolutely no issue between Wayne Rooney and I. To suggest we don't talk to each other on the training ground is absolute nonsense.

"He understood the reasons for not playing him and that was completely tactical. And I think I was right. We don't always get it right but I think we did get it right. Danny Welbeck is the best player we have in terms of operating in a double role. We had to choke Xabi Alonso's ability to control the game, which Danny did, and that took away Alonso's control of the game and his ability to go further forward and be an attacking player. We don't always get it right but we definitely did on Tuesday.

Is anyone considering Adam Le Fondre as a cheap third striker?
He’s scored 10 PL goals in 1180 minutes this season.
His next two home games are against Aston Villa (GW29) and Southampton (GW 32) who are the two teams who have conceded the most goals away from home in the PL.
He has scored 3 PL braces this season.

Pogrebnyak is suspended until GW31. Does anyone think that Le Fondre will keep his starting spot when Pogrebnyak returns?

Not sure you should be doing this, to be honest. I have a sneaky suspicion that one of the doubles is going to be dumped on us in gameweek 31 or 32.

You don't want to be throwing away transfers on one week mid-table punts when you can get a better player for a double in the near future.

Well, its for Aguero. The man has been poor for me FPL wise, and as i understand he`s having some personal problems in addition to his injury woes. Surely its better to have Lukaku for the 1 week than an extra transfer? Will get Rooney in for him next week.

I think you'll be able to use that extra transfer for an extra game from a City/United/Chelsea player in the near future.

So you're choosing between Lukaka and a player from those teams. Your choice.

Theres still some uncertainty as to when the double for these teams will be, right? Are you really saying that you`d rather play 10 men this week and have the extra transfer ( I have 2FT this week ) rather than the 1 GW punt on Lukaku? Given his form, his rest last gw, etc.

I was considering holding Aguero or transfer, but effectively by using this week I will gain 2 points just by Benteke playing.

If I have to take a -4 next week to get in a player not playing this week, it'll cost a maximum of 2 points.

The potential for Benteke or someone getting points, far outweighs the future costs.

The only bitterness, will be you have to take the hit AFTER having the points, which will make me doubt doing it 😀

+1. Lallana, when fit, probably the one who can be garunteed really regular starts. Good option also - if you're going Southampton I would follow the injury news and get him when he's ready.

Isnt Lallana club captain? Surely he`s nailed on once he`s returned to fitness. Although, and i might be mistaken, but has he been deployed wide right since Pochettino took over the reigns? Is that why Puncheon has been dropped?

If there's no-one you really want playing this week, ave it a get a cheap double gameweeker that you will want for that one week. Maloney, Noble etc. Play them for their double and then forget about them.

Well this Rooney love from SAF puts him back on my radar. Was going to swap Mata for Sissoko for a free, giving me enough to get RVP back next week.

But this means Fellaini can now leave instead. Phew, was getting worried about Mata having a return to form.

It's not a surprise for me.

We're back to the situation we were at at the start of the season where Fergie has a fit and in-form roster and lots of options.

I don't see him tinkering with the team just yet, but if the gap at the top stays the same for another 2-3 weeks, I personally expect extreme tinkering, especially with the FA cup still to play for.

There are quite a few players he will try to give playing time to IMO (for different reasons), e.g.

      Lindy?
      Büttner
      Jones
      Evans
      Vidic
      Smalling
      Kagawa
      Nani
      Valencia
      Wellbeck
      Hernandez

Bad news for both Rooney and RVP owners IMO, but we're not there quite yet.

Theres quite a few of these players i cant see playing much at all, and i dont really think any of them will steal minutes from RVP or Rooney, to be honest. Yeah Wellbeck had a good couple of games in the CL, but he`s been far from stellar in the Premier League. Hernandez is and always will be a super sub as far as im concerned, and Nani/Valencia/Young/Kagawa will battle it out for the two wide spots imo. Jones will play some in midfield, atleast i think thats his best position, Buttner and Smalling are shite, And Vidic/Evans will have some rotation. Lindegaard probably wont play at all, imo.

You're assuming Fergie will be playing his strongest team for the rest of the season. If the title is more or less wrapped up ahead of the DGWs, do you think he'll be playing his strongest team every game?

Pretty much. The title was "wrapped up" last season with what, 8 points ahead with 4 games left? And they screwed it up. I cant see him taking this risk again. Nani might be leaving this summer, if he hasnt used up all his chances by now then i dunno. Valencia has been shite all year. Hernandez wont steal minutes from anyone, and i cant see Welbz outing RVP or Rooney, unless there really is a twist between them. As for the defenders, yeah i think there`ll be some rotation, purely because of Rio/Vidic`s age and physichal conditions, and i think Jones will get some games in. The only reason i can see him rotating/resting some of the top guns is if they get to like the semi`s or the FA Cup final and/or the league has been won. Not in practice, actually decided.

Hey guys, I've already taken a 4 pt. hit this week but still have only 9 players. Should I take another hit to field 10? Thinking of Guthrie -> Sessegnon. That will also clear all my deadwood, having already taken out Bertrand. Team ATM is:

      Federici, (Bunn),
      Harte, Davies, Wilson,
      Bale, Michu, Sissoko,
      Suarez, Fletcher.

Players out: RVP, Walcott, Zabaleta, Guthrie, Demel.

Cheers, and thanks for all the help. 🙂

To be fair what you're suggesting is not ridiculous at all. I don't imagine someone with Wayne's talent and ego will have been happy to sit out the biggest match of our season. It just depends how unhappy he is.

      Benteke in for Aguero 😎

      Reina (Federici)
      Cameron Davies Harte Pearce (Zabaleta)
      Bale Puncheon Taarabt (Walcott Mata)
      Benteke Suarez Sturridge

leaves me 7.0 million in the bank to upgrade Taarabt/Puncheon next week.. my question is
Since i do not want to waste a transfer next week on defense but will prob have too(Cameron not playin, Reading defense vs manu!!) should i just do Cameron to Samba this week for -4? he should get more than cameron(0 this week) and Harte/Pearce(prob 0 next week).. thanks

I have two freebies but not sure which way to go:

      A. Mata,Pog > Sissoko, Benteke
      or
      B.Fellaini,Pog > Snodgrass, Lukaku

I prefer Sissoko to Snodgrass but that means getting rid of Mata, who has great fixtures.
