Gareth Bale is amongst the goals yet again as Tottenham get the better of Inter at the Lane. A lacklustre Chelsea are beaten in Bucharest, Newcastle register a goalless draw with Anzhi but are set to be without Fabricio Coloccini for a number of weeks, Daniel Sturridge is back for Liverpool this weekend, while Shane Long is a doubt for West Brom’s home game with Swansea:

Tottenham 3 Inter 0
Andre Villas-Boas’ side continued their impressive form by sweeping aside their Italian visitors last night. The Spurs boss made three changes from the side that saw off Arsenal at the Lane last Sunday – Hugo Lloris and Michael Dawson dropped out for Brad Friedel and William Gallas at the back, while Jermain Defoe led the line with Emmanuel Adebayor still recovering from the knee problem that forced him off on Sunday.

While Gareth Bale hogged the headlines once more with a goal and assist, Gylfi Sigurdsson continued his renaissance on the Tottenham left. The Icelandic international mirrored Bale’s returns before making way for Lewis Holtby with 20 minutes – having notched a goal and assist in his last couple of league games, he is finally starting to suggest he’s ready to hold down a first-team role after a slow start to life at the Lane. Jan Vertonghen served a reminder of his threat from the back by nodding home the hosts’ third to leave Villas-Boas’ side with a commanding first-leg lead – they will be without Bale for the second leg in the San Siro, though, as the Welshman is set to serve a one-match ban after receiving his third caution of the tournament. The only downside for Villas-Boas from last night’s match was the late withdrawal of Aaron Lennon with what appeared to be a hamstring knock. Having started every one of Spurs’ 28 league matches, any possible absence would be a bitter blow for the flying winger – we should hopefully get further prognosis in this afternoon’s press conference.

Anzhi 0 Newcastle 0
With a crucial home clash against Stoke on the horizon, Alan Pardew made seven changes from the side that lost narrowly at Swansea for yesterday’s trip to Russia. Rob Elliott, Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa Elsewhere, Yohan Cabaye and Moussa Sissoko were the four to retain their places – with Papiss Cisse missing out through illness, Hatem Ben Arfa was intriguingly handed the lone forward role upon his return from a long-term hamstring injury, though Pardew did admit beforehand he was concerned the synthetic surface could pose problems for Shola Ameobi’s ongoing knee issue. Ameobi replace the Frenchman just after the hour mark, while Steven Taylor came on with quarter of an hour left in what was a hugely uneventful match.

Post-match, Pardew admitted he would utilise Ben Arfa as a lone forward role again, if necessary:

“Hatem lasted longer than I thought and did well given he is not fit. I have thought about using him there before because if I was a centre-back he is the last person I would want to see with the ball at his feet. And I would certainly consider it again.”

Prior to the game, Pardew was left reeling from the news that Fabricio Coloccini is set to be sidelined with the back problem sustained in Gameweek 27 against Swansea. The Magpies boss has admitted his skipper could be missing for up to two months:

“Colo has gone back to Argentina. There’s no treatment he can have – he’s broken two of the bones in his back. We think it’s going to be anything between three and seven weeks. He’s gone back for a week.”

With Tim Krul also out due to an ankle injury, Pardew’s defensive problems are starting to rack up but luckily his winter transfer spree has come in handy. Yanga-Mbiwa now looks likely to be given the platform to secure a regular role alongside Steven Taylor in the heart of defence, though priced at 4.9 in FPL, he still will set you back more than Steven Taylor’s 4.6.

Steaua Bucharest 1 Chelsea 0
Rafa Benitez also made a number of changes ahead of Sunday’s FA Cup trip to Old Trafford. Cesar Azpilicueta and Ashley Cole dropped out of the back-four – Branislav Ivanovic moved to right-back as John Terry returned, while Ryan Bertrand was also afforded a start. With Ramires rested from the trip, John Obi Mikel joined Frank Lampard in the double-pivot, while Yossi Benayoun – fit again after an ankle injury – replaced Juan Mata in the attacking midfield three. Up top, Fernando Torres got the nod as Demba Ba is ineligible to feature. Benitez made a couple of substitutions during the course of the defeat; Eden Hazard was replaced by Marko Marin with 15 minutes left, while Benayoun made way for Mata just after the hour mark.

In Other News
Daniel Sturridge has been passed fit and is available for selection once again ahead of Liverpool’s home game with Spurs this weekend. The Reds’ assistant boss Colin Pascoe revealed to the press yesterday:

“He’s looking good. It was his first day training today and he has trained well. He will be available for Sunday. Everyone seems fit and raring to go and we can’t wait for Sunday.”

Having missed two of the last three, including last Saturday’s win over Wigan, Sturridge has been sold by over 14,000 FPL managers heading into the weekend – despite only 12 teams taking to the field this time round. Luis Suarez looks set for a change in role once again, with the Uruguayan tucking in behind Sturridge as Brendan Rodgers moves back to a 4-2-3-1 to accommodate the former Chelsea man in the starting line-up. Having scored or assisted in all five of his league appearances, Sturridge will no doubt receive plenty new investors after yesterday’ news – with Liverpool visiting three of the bottom five in addition to a home clash with West Ham this weekend, there’s plenty potential for further attacking points.

Shane Long is the only doubt for West Brom’s home clash with Swansea. Steve Clarke revealed the Irishman is struggling to overcome an ankle injury picked up during last Saturday’s game at Chelsea:

“The unfortunate thing for us is that Shane Long, who played last week with a bad ankle, has aggravated his ankle through the weekend. He trained Monday and Tuesday but unfortunately didn’t train today. He is doubtful for tomorrow – and the weekend as well. That’s a bit of a loss for us. Although, I’m ever the optimist and I haven’t ruled him out of the weekend yet.”

The news certainly eases any lingering fears for Romelu Lukaku’s Fantasy owners as the Baggies look to avenge their defeat at the hands of Michael Laudrup’s side earlier this season. Clarke’s habit of alternating the two for starting roles has played havoc with the Belgian’s game time, though with eight starts in the last 10, he has started to look a Hawthorns regular in recent weeks. Clarke has also revealed Chris Brunt has recovered from the ankle injury that kept him out of last week’s game, while Claudio Yacob, Steven Reid and Jonas Olsson are all fit and raring to go after shrugging off midweek knocks.

Remy is second to none in the air.

Need attacking backs to provide good quality crosses in open play. If Fabio gets regular starts take it as a but sign.

12 goals and 12 assists from 21 starts and 5 sub appearances in all competitions this year.

(Proper assists not FPL ones) and includes only one domestic cup match (in which he didn't score).

And that's just the goal and assist contribution (which is higher than a lot of people realise), but that isn't the main factor that Rooney contributes to the team.

He's not having his best season, but also he's not bad season by a long shot. Don't forget he's generally played out on the wing/deep, so won't be scoring as much as previous years where he played up top.

This season, Bale. Last season/previously, Rooney. Rooney`s downswinging this year, its either time to bounce back or get sold next year, imo. Bale has produced extremely well the last few months, but then again - only for short periods at the time.

I agree with you. Rooney`s having a worse season than last year, along with his injuries, but its not like he`s having a Torres season. I`d still rate Rooney over Bale. But at this rate, Bale is bridging the gap fast.

Depends how much money you have, but Anichebe out for a hit looks a good move. I also don't know about Zabaletta's immediate fixtures.

I have to warn everyone, I think a double gameweek is going to be dumped on us at short notice, much as the Chelsea one was earlier in the year. In particular because United's schedule has just emptied and City will try and get their game on beofre the Manchester Derby.

When you're spending your transfers, ask yourselves; "is this better then having an extra United/City/Chelsea" double gameweek player in a few weeks time?

see my post on the last page. GW33 is the first midweek where there are no European games (I doubt it will be scheduled on a CL match-day when there are other weeks free) and it isn't an international break.

If both go through in the cup, we're looking at GW35 onwards.

I'm going to add to Tink's excellent theory. If either or both of the MCR teams get through to the Cup Final then the DGWs will 'probably' be GW35 and GW36. GW36 is the week before the Cup Final, so expect rotation. MCY and MUN DGWers may not be the best option if this happens.

Given the doubts around the City attack and Fergie's defensive selections, the picking the right players will be so crucial.

doubling up on City and/or United defenders could be the best way to go.

That said, Rafa's no better when it comes to rotation and Everton's fixture's aren't amazing.

Shame we can only pick 3 Arsenal players!

Didnt get a response from you on the previous page. Do you really think (with the uncertainty of when the double will go through) that not doing Aguero -> Lukaku for free and fielding 11 this GW is more viable than saving that extra transfer for later? Lukaku is on form and will be a differential in my ML as well.

Yeah, i was pretty sold on it even though its just for the one week. If i dont do it i`d have to play 5-2-2, not exactly a point banging formation 😉 Aguero has been poor this season, City scoring 20 odd goals less than last season. Along with his personal problems, i think im just gonna cut my losses yeah.

If you were on your wildcard this week, which 2 keepers would you go for?

I'm thinking Bunn and De Gea/Sczesny. I prefer De Gea but I'm worried Fergie will let Lindegaard get to 10 appearances for his prem medal if the title is tied up early (he's currently on 8 appearances). Cech's a bit too expensive, by team value is on the low side.

Also, if you're going with 2 expensive defenders, which would you go for? GJ/Enrique +1?

Time to ditch Zabaletta? I don't like the look of Blank-eve-NEW-mun.

Well as a long term Bunn and Szesney owner I like you're thinking!

I would go with this. Bunn's fixtures and good and De Gea and Scesney will both be a cheap way into a defence with a good double gameweek.

De Gea and Norwich could be a problem though; by the end of the season De Gea may be rotated and Bunn may be dropped for Camp or Ruddy. So I'd go with Sceseney.

I hope you're right. In a tough game like this, where Suarez will have some defensive duties, I think he's as good an option as Suarez.

"Some". He`s not a midfielder, he`s an attacker. He`ll be up there. Its foolish to think that Sturridge will outscore Suarez for the season, the only reason i can even see there beeing a debate on who to get is the price difference. I can see sunday`s game beeing really high scoring actually.

I think if anybody will score against Spurs it will be Sturridge exploiting the high-line.

Never say never? But realistically. Bale has spoken widely about playing abroad, and if he loves Spurs as much as he says he does, then signing for United would be very hard for him. As i said, United paying the £60m theyre gonna demand for him i rate as highly unlikely, especially when they already have Kagawa, Giggs, Valencia, Nani, Zaha and Welbeck to play on the wings. Granted Giggs is old, Valencia has been shit and Nani might leave, theyre still all there now. And yeah, if Spurs get top 4 he`s atleast gonna stay for one more season.

But my defense is an absolute shit. So i was planning to wildcard next week and loading up player from team that missed GW 29,and fixing my defense. Problem is it don't seem that all the missing match will be played in a single GW. So should i wait for MU/MC/Chel DWG or play my wildcard next week and fix my defense.

If United are still 12 points (or more) ahead after the Manchester derby in GW32, do you expect he'll play his best team every week, knowing he only needs to win 2-3 out of the remaining 6? Don't forget to factor in that he has the FA cup to play for.

And that's assuming City win their remaining 6 games from GW33 onwards

I do think he'll want RVP to get golden boot above Bucky

I don't think Fergie will be bothered about that myself.

I cant see him beeing that petty, but again.. Im pretty sure he and everyone else at that club hates Suarez, so who knows.

My point is that they could easily have the title won (practically if not mathematically) by the time the United DGW comes around.

Yeah. Like i said, i cant see him risking the league again until its absolutely certain that they`ve won it. Im not sure what teams are left in the cup, but until they reach the semi`s i cant see him resting people for it.

So gonna stick with 3-5-2. Whatcha think of Baines & Mata to Enrique & Sissoko? Giving me enough to do Lambert & Cameron to RVP & 6+ defender next week

    Means next week I'd have

    Bale/Walcott/Fellaini/Sissoko/Michu

    RVP/Suarez

Looks good Damo. I have done similar this week. Might look to get Lamps/Hazard in next week for Chelsea coverage?

    Probability wise.

    Given

    1) Suarez is on 8 yellows and may be suspended soon

    2) Sturridge has a recurring injury problem

3)If Suarez misses games this will severely dent Sturridges returns.

Why would anyone multiply risk 1 by risk 2 and buy in Sturridge?

Backing Suarez going for the golden boot seems to me to be a no brainer.

      Or am I missing something?

OK, you asked for it. here's my bag of baggins for this week:

    Mig
    Pearce, Dawson, Davies, Cam
    Bale, Kebe, Sisso
    Suarez, Sturidge, Benteke

    Cerny, Walcott, Mata, Bert

Cam and Kebe doubtful so i'll have to make do with 9

My front three are Benteke, Fletcher, Sturridge.

If you'd told me that in August, I would've thought some disaster had wiped out half the players..

A lot of people were saying yesterday that Sissoko played striker, but in the scout tweets there's an article about HBA playing striker yesterday? Did they play 2 strikers (who really are midfielders) ?
