Gareth Bale is amongst the goals yet again as Tottenham get the better of Inter at the Lane. A lacklustre Chelsea are beaten in Bucharest, Newcastle register a goalless draw with Anzhi but are set to be without Fabricio Coloccini for a number of weeks, Daniel Sturridge is back for Liverpool this weekend, while Shane Long is a doubt for West Brom’s home game with Swansea:

Tottenham 3 Inter 0
Andre Villas-Boas’ side continued their impressive form by sweeping aside their Italian visitors last night. The Spurs boss made three changes from the side that saw off Arsenal at the Lane last Sunday – Hugo Lloris and Michael Dawson dropped out for Brad Friedel and William Gallas at the back, while Jermain Defoe led the line with Emmanuel Adebayor still recovering from the knee problem that forced him off on Sunday.

While Gareth Bale hogged the headlines once more with a goal and assist, Gylfi Sigurdsson continued his renaissance on the Tottenham left. The Icelandic international mirrored Bale’s returns before making way for Lewis Holtby with 20 minutes – having notched a goal and assist in his last couple of league games, he is finally starting to suggest he’s ready to hold down a first-team role after a slow start to life at the Lane. Jan Vertonghen served a reminder of his threat from the back by nodding home the hosts’ third to leave Villas-Boas’ side with a commanding first-leg lead – they will be without Bale for the second leg in the San Siro, though, as the Welshman is set to serve a one-match ban after receiving his third caution of the tournament. The only downside for Villas-Boas from last night’s match was the late withdrawal of Aaron Lennon with what appeared to be a hamstring knock. Having started every one of Spurs’ 28 league matches, any possible absence would be a bitter blow for the flying winger – we should hopefully get further prognosis in this afternoon’s press conference.

Anzhi 0 Newcastle 0
With a crucial home clash against Stoke on the horizon, Alan Pardew made seven changes from the side that lost narrowly at Swansea for yesterday’s trip to Russia. Rob Elliott, Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa Elsewhere, Yohan Cabaye and Moussa Sissoko were the four to retain their places – with Papiss Cisse missing out through illness, Hatem Ben Arfa was intriguingly handed the lone forward role upon his return from a long-term hamstring injury, though Pardew did admit beforehand he was concerned the synthetic surface could pose problems for Shola Ameobi’s ongoing knee issue. Ameobi replace the Frenchman just after the hour mark, while Steven Taylor came on with quarter of an hour left in what was a hugely uneventful match.

Post-match, Pardew admitted he would utilise Ben Arfa as a lone forward role again, if necessary:

“Hatem lasted longer than I thought and did well given he is not fit. I have thought about using him there before because if I was a centre-back he is the last person I would want to see with the ball at his feet. And I would certainly consider it again.”

Prior to the game, Pardew was left reeling from the news that Fabricio Coloccini is set to be sidelined with the back problem sustained in Gameweek 27 against Swansea. The Magpies boss has admitted his skipper could be missing for up to two months:

“Colo has gone back to Argentina. There’s no treatment he can have – he’s broken two of the bones in his back. We think it’s going to be anything between three and seven weeks. He’s gone back for a week.”

With Tim Krul also out due to an ankle injury, Pardew’s defensive problems are starting to rack up but luckily his winter transfer spree has come in handy. Yanga-Mbiwa now looks likely to be given the platform to secure a regular role alongside Steven Taylor in the heart of defence, though priced at 4.9 in FPL, he still will set you back more than Steven Taylor’s 4.6.

Steaua Bucharest 1 Chelsea 0
Rafa Benitez also made a number of changes ahead of Sunday’s FA Cup trip to Old Trafford. Cesar Azpilicueta and Ashley Cole dropped out of the back-four – Branislav Ivanovic moved to right-back as John Terry returned, while Ryan Bertrand was also afforded a start. With Ramires rested from the trip, John Obi Mikel joined Frank Lampard in the double-pivot, while Yossi Benayoun – fit again after an ankle injury – replaced Juan Mata in the attacking midfield three. Up top, Fernando Torres got the nod as Demba Ba is ineligible to feature. Benitez made a couple of substitutions during the course of the defeat; Eden Hazard was replaced by Marko Marin with 15 minutes left, while Benayoun made way for Mata just after the hour mark.

In Other News
Daniel Sturridge has been passed fit and is available for selection once again ahead of Liverpool’s home game with Spurs this weekend. The Reds’ assistant boss Colin Pascoe revealed to the press yesterday:

“He’s looking good. It was his first day training today and he has trained well. He will be available for Sunday. Everyone seems fit and raring to go and we can’t wait for Sunday.”

Having missed two of the last three, including last Saturday’s win over Wigan, Sturridge has been sold by over 14,000 FPL managers heading into the weekend – despite only 12 teams taking to the field this time round. Luis Suarez looks set for a change in role once again, with the Uruguayan tucking in behind Sturridge as Brendan Rodgers moves back to a 4-2-3-1 to accommodate the former Chelsea man in the starting line-up. Having scored or assisted in all five of his league appearances, Sturridge will no doubt receive plenty new investors after yesterday’ news – with Liverpool visiting three of the bottom five in addition to a home clash with West Ham this weekend, there’s plenty potential for further attacking points.

Shane Long is the only doubt for West Brom’s home clash with Swansea. Steve Clarke revealed the Irishman is struggling to overcome an ankle injury picked up during last Saturday’s game at Chelsea:

“The unfortunate thing for us is that Shane Long, who played last week with a bad ankle, has aggravated his ankle through the weekend. He trained Monday and Tuesday but unfortunately didn’t train today. He is doubtful for tomorrow – and the weekend as well. That’s a bit of a loss for us. Although, I’m ever the optimist and I haven’t ruled him out of the weekend yet.”

The news certainly eases any lingering fears for Romelu Lukaku’s Fantasy owners as the Baggies look to avenge their defeat at the hands of Michael Laudrup’s side earlier this season. Clarke’s habit of alternating the two for starting roles has played havoc with the Belgian’s game time, though with eight starts in the last 10, he has started to look a Hawthorns regular in recent weeks. Clarke has also revealed Chris Brunt has recovered from the ankle injury that kept him out of last week’s game, while Claudio Yacob, Steven Reid and Jonas Olsson are all fit and raring to go after shrugging off midweek knocks.

For those worried about the 10 yellows, from what I understand, this limit is raised either for GW33 or GW34 onwards.

So those such as Fellaini and Suarez who currently sit on 8, only have to go around 5 games without picking up 2. Very doable.

But Suarez is a card monster.

      I'd say he's 60/40 to avoid suspension

Suarez went 6 PL games without a card from Dec 29, scoring 49pts in the process.

I really don't get this not buying a player coz he might be susp.

He has average 1 card every game across the whole season.

He has a significant chance of being suspended.

My point is why multiply this risk with the risk of Sturridge's reoccurring injury.

Surely until you need funds for dbl gwks Suarez is the clear pick.

spybot, malwarebytes and cclear are all freeware that will do the trick, along with a good firewall/anti-virus combo (e.g. Zone Alarm free and AVG free).

Strangely, I've never headed into a GW feeling so confident about my team:

    Bunn

    Enrique Wilson Harte Martin

    Bale Sissoko Michu Puncheon

    Sturridge Lambert

Cue Sturridge and Puncheon both not starting and me picking the wrong captain from Bale, Sturridge and Lambert!

Yeah, cheers for the headsup. I was intending on selling anyways barring huge returns in the Villa game.... I know Swansea are a good away side and WBA struggle sometimes, but Lukaku really tickles my fancy. Had the week off, strong form, and he`s just a beast. I think i`d rather take my chances with him getting points this week than saving the trannie as #17 suggests.. A bird in the hand and all that..

A lot of people were saying yesterday that Sissoko played striker, but in the scout tweets there’s an article about HBA playing striker yesterday? Did they play 2 strikers (who really are midfielders) ? 😀

I think the rumour about Sissoko playing striker was based on looking at the team sheets to be honest.

Sissoko was in his usual role by the sounds of it with HBA playing CF.

Not sure about taking an 8point hit for GW29 any suggestions to help me out guys? Fellaini for Coutinho and Tevez for Sturridge, if I leave it then I will only have 9 players playing, I am top of my league and 15 points clear???

Wouldnt get Coutinho if Sturridge is deemed fit. I see him back on the bench. Think we`ll start Sturridge front, Suarez left and Downing right, with Gerrard/Lucas/Henderson in midfield.

Well on second thought, Suarez might play the #10 for us with Sturridge up front with Coutinho keeping his place on the left with Gerrard/Lucas in the middle. Still wouldnt take the risk though.

I can see Suarez tucking in behind Sturridge and Coutinho playing on the left and Downing on the wright, with Gerrard and Lucas in the middle. Liverpool have some decent fixtures in the next 5 GW's so they can inflict some damage.

United's best front 6 in your opinion? I would love to see this team.

    ---Carrick-----Clevs------------
    (good)Nani------Rooney--Kagawa--
    ----------RvP------------------------

Obviously, opposition dictates teams a lot but i would love to see this. The front 4 are capable of interchanging positions, making this a very dynamic team.

Didn't realise the Nani ref had sent off 7 English team's players and 0 of their opponents. The JT one was justified but I'd like to have a look at the other 5.

Lay off the referee already. The sending off is harsh, maybe a little too harsh, but its justifiable. He`s a top, top referee. As far as i know he was favorite to get the final before tuesdays game.

Someone pointed out that the referee’s last red cards have gone to: Cahill, Terry, Gerrard and Balotelli while he was at City. He’s also been at the front of some incredibly dubious decisions involving Fenerbache and Galatasaray. At best this guy is an incompetent fool who has something against English teams, at worst, and this wouldnt surprise me in the slightest, money is involved.

Techincal ability, no doubt. As far as a winger in 4-4-2, Valencia has the better potential. He runs down the wing, hes strong, amazing crossing, and he tracks back. Nani has the better shot and better trickery, but he`s very ineffecient.

Thats what opinion the opinion is because his bad games are reallllly bad. He's quite efficient if you ask me and Nani's crosses are muchhhh better than Tony V. Strength and discipline are the only 2 departments in which Tony V is superior to Nani.

Meh, i think Valencia`s crossing is quite a lot better than Nani`s. I also rate the extra security he provides for Rafael, which improves his game. If you put it that way, then trickery/shooting is probably the only areas where Nani rates above Tony, and i know which one i`d want in my team, as a manager and a teammate.

I have seen Valencia a lot this season. And i completely agree, he`s been atrocious pretty much all season. I thought the point of this exercise was who i`d want ideally, which means theyre all pretty much on form. This season i wouldnt want Valencia even if i were Brian McDermot.

            No Carrick?

            For me, something like this:

            Carrick------Jones

            Valencia ---- Rooney ------- Young

            ---- RVP -----

I think think that as a unit they`ll serve you better both offensively and defensively. Rafael benefits a ton from having Valencia as his RM rather than say Nani, who never tracks back as it leaves too much risk. Kagawa hasnt proven enough for me yet, and Clevz is far out for me. Yet.

Jones' best position is still in defence. He doesn't have the range Clevs does and Clevs is a really neat player in the middle of the park who compliments Carrick perfectly. Infact, Carrick's increase in forward passes this season is because Clevs does a lot of the dirty work, which means he has more freedom does Clevs. I have seen a lot of Kagawa last year as well, and i think he is an extremely gifted footballer. His technical ability on the ball and off it, combined with his vision, are great. I see an absolute stormer of a season next year and i love an in form Nani. Proper game changer.

I disagree about Jones, and i dont think Cleverly is quite that good. I`ve seen little of Kagawa, but i do like what i see, and i think he could be quite dangerous for you next season. Extremely gifted, clever player. Reminds me a bit of Iniesta. Nani is those things you say, but for me hes way too incosistant and defensively weak. Plus hes a proper cu*t as well.

No. Cazorla is very good. Nani is overrated if nothing else due to his inconsistency.

      Carrick Jones Rooney
      Nani Kagawa
      RVP

No idea if that would actually work mind you.

Jones doesn't have a great range. His biggest asset is his athleticism. I love his crosses from the right though. Got a real bend on em.

He would be. No natural Left winger in this team, just a lot of movement. All 4 can keep interchanging.

Fair point! If Rooney was to be gone this summer, a good left winger and Kagawa in the centre would be rather excellent.

Repost. Hey guys, I’ve already taken a 4 pt. hit this week but still have only 9 players. Should I take another hit to field 10? Thinking of Guthrie -> Sessegnon. That will also clear all my deadwood, having already taken out Bertrand. Team ATM is:

      Federici, (Bunn),
      Harte, Davies, Wilson,
      Bale, Michu, Sissoko,
      Suarez, Fletcher.

Players out: RVP, Walcott, Zabaleta, Guthrie, Demel.

Cheers, and thanks for all the help. 🙂

Anyone else stuck with the Suarez & Rooney vrs Sturridge and RVP dilemma?

At the moment Sturridge's fitness record is swaying it for me. There probably isn't that much between the teams but when Sturridge is out, Suarez becomes an essential player.

              Anyone agree/disagree with this?

Also the fact that Utd are out of Europe is very interesting. Anyone reckon Fergie will give Kagawa serious game time for the remainder of this season in order to build him up for next year?

Am doing Sturridge > Rooney next week but will be tough not to do Mata > Kagawa if the former plays twice in between.

What's Fergie's form when cantering to a title? Does he rotate and let everyone share the glory or will he stick?

Last season he mucked about with the teamsheet every week till they eventually lost the title. He swore that it wouldnt happen again, so I suspect the first XI will play till the title is theirs.

                  You're probably right.

The only issue is sitting on triple pool, which wasn't a long term intention (Suarez, Sturridge & Coutinho). My original plan was Studge > Rooney.

So this week I have 2 FTs and £2.9 in the bank. Also WC in hand, so not afraid of getting rid of future DGW prospects.

              Bego (Fede)
              Mariappa Davies Clyne (Rafael Zabaleta)
              Michu Bale Kebe* (Mata Walcott)
              Cisse* Suarez Fletcher

Do I transfer out any of the 4 not playing? If so, who? I would probably want them back straight away anyway.
Thinking of G. Johnson in for Rafael and Sissoko for Kebe, anyone got any better suggestions?

Can't decide on which defender to bring in out of,

              Dawson/Samba/Debuchy

                dawson has tough games.

iv got same threee choices and opting for samba at the moment. clean sheet potential, goals potential and baps

Yea think you're right. Samba was getting a lot of love on the scoutcast, plus I think Debuchy is a tad over-priced.

for that price you want a goal threat. debuchy aint really a goal threat. samba is.

i can see samba scoring at least 1-2 goals before end of season.

Good assist threat though, improving side and great fixtures. Samba`s goal threat so far has been non-existant, pretty much based on previous years in the PL imo.

samba could have scored 2 against united 2wks ago. cleared off line by rafael.

                      goal threat is still there

Heco, you think HBA will start this weekend? Really tempted by him rather than Sissoko.
