After the 2-2 draw at St Andrews last midweek, where Man City grabbed the lead twice only for a spirited Birmingham to cancel out their advantage, Roberto Mancini made no bones about his unhappiness as the Eastlands side fell further behind in the title race with a run of one win in four league games.

In January and February the team has looked so tired. A team like us should be winning 1-0 and be defending well, be very strong. But instead we’re gifting more chances….We can’t concede two goals every game. We must do something and play better. I think tonight we played well the first 50 minutes but after that we forgot to play. I don’t know why at this moment but I should change something.

The next game -last Saturday’s home match with West Brom- saw a change no one was expecting; new big-money signing Edin Dzeko dropped to the bench and regular left-back Aleksander Kolarov was moved further up the field, taking his place wide left in City’s front three. The home side were three up within forty minutes and Kolarov picked up an assist and two Fantasy Premier League Bonus Points for his performance.

Dzeko’s arrival seems to have presented Mancini with a conundrum similar to that of Fernando Torres at Chelsea: how do you go about fitting these fantastic players into a winning formation? Dzeko is a wasted talent out on the left wing and clearly needs to be played centrally. A look at these heat maps from those above-mentioned games illustrates the benefit of fielding players in their natural positions (a concept not lost on Kenny Dalglish of late).

Against West Brom, Kolarov stayed wide and played high up the pitch, thus giving the team a far better balance both going forward and, resultantly, in keeping shape at the back. The heat map shows he made 78% of all passes from the left wing.

In the Birmingham game, however, Dzeko dropped deep and drifted into the middle, which is, after all, the natural tendency of a centre forward. In contrast, he made just 33% of all passes from the left wing. It’s perhaps no coincidence, then, that this match saw David Bentley, directly opposite Dzeko on the pitch, pick up the 3 Bonus Points for a highly-influential man of the match performance.

These Average Position maps show the team’s shape for each game. Against Birmingham, Dzeko (10) is stationed far too central to afford the side a proper balance, meaning Kolarov (13), playing as a left-back, is having to provide the width from deep, thus exposing that flank in his forages forward.

Against West Brom, Kolarov stayed wide up front, meaning Pablo Zabaleta (5) never had to over-extend himself going forward at left-back. City chalked up their first clean sheet in four games but perhaps more importantly for Mancini, with a natural left-footer on the left flank rather than an inside-out winger or centre forward, looked far more stable for it.

City’s first team coach David Platt commented on Dzeko’s absence this week, citing tiredness more than anything else:

Edin came here after practically a month off with the winter break in Germany, and has played four games in a short space of time.We felt it needed just one front man on Saturday, to give that point of reference to move the ball around. It was purely a tactical decision, but he remains exceptionally important for us.

With the race for Champions League places heating up, however, Mancini can ill-afford to gamble much further with tactics or the bedding-in of newcomers at such a key time in the season and it may well be that Dzeko will see more time on the bench, coming on when the points are wrapped up, as he done on Saturday. Certainly, Saturday’s performance was more in line with the “good defending, being strong” ethos Mancini is calling for right now, and if the City boss felt compelled to bench Dzeko in a home game with West Brom, it would be no surprise to see him sit out tougher fixtures until the team gels with him in the side.

In the meantime, Fantasy Owners of Kolarov will keep their fingers crossed this situation continues; given that he’s already on free kicks, a fair share of corners and taking City‘s mean defensive record into consideration, this could make the £5.7m defender an outstanding out-of-position Fantasy Prospect in the upcoming game weeks.

He already has 2 Brum defenders..... maybe get Walker as a long term prospect, as you can play him in the weeks Birmingham play away from home.

    Hi Guys,

If you have a moment i would appreciate a little help on my transfers this week.

I have 2 free transfers and my team is:

    VDS Stockdale
    Coleman Walker Kelly Hangeland Carr
    Nani VDV NZogbia Dempsey Adam
    RVP Tevez Suarez

Im thinking of bringing in: ODEMWINGIE, BENTLEY, and either Koscielny or Clichy/Sagna

I will transfer them in for: Hangeland, NZogbia and Suarez.

I'm happy to do a minus 4 to do these 3 tranfers considering the double week.

    My team would therefore be:

    VDS (Stockdale)
    Kelly Carr Koscielny (Coleman, Walker)
    Nani VDV Bentley Adam (Dempsey)
    RVP Tevez Odemwingie

So what do you guys think of this?

I would appreciate any opinion or advice?

    Thanks!!!

        exactly

this is why i went with 3 brum 2 arsenal and 2 spurs

i dont expect them to draw with orient but if they do then so be it, its a bit of a gamble but i fully expect them to beat orient no problem

I hope you are right Tosey. Now that they have allocated that date to a potential replay, I worry that they never inserted a proviso whereby if there is no replay Tottenham will play Arsenal that night. That concerns me greatly as I'd like to have 3,3,1 from the sides you mentioned and am currently on my wildcard.

The real spanner in the works is the long shot where Leyton Orient knock Arsenal out making the Spurs / Arsenal game on the FA Cup Quarter-final date instead (12th March 2011).

If (when) Arsenal beat Leyton Orient it doesn't suddenly mean that the Spurs game will get rescheduled. (God I've had to reiterate this enough times this week) It could already have been scheduled the day they beat Ipswich - yet it wasn't.

Could it be played then if they beat Leyton? Yes. Should you assume that it will? Definitely not.

Different sources claim that either Charlie Adam or Gary Taylor-Fletcher picked up a yellow card against Liverpool - this is the "hidden" 9th yellow card. We're currently reaching out for clarification as to which fat and balding player it went to; and if Adam is on 8 or 9 cards.

see my post above, i know we can't assume it, but in my opinion its

          a) very likely that they wont draw with orient

          and

          b) very likely to be rescheduled for the midweek left open for fa cup replays

Well I think you're walking down the misbegotten path of smoke and mirrors.

In the end, I'm happy for you to do what you like, but I don't like seeing people here spread assumption (and ones that ultimately have little basis other than what equates to a hunch) that pretty much come across as tantamount to fact.

The facts are these: Arsenal and Spurs have no gameweek in 28, and until we know otherwise - people should be "prepared" for that.

you also say "I don’t like seeing people here spread assumption (and ones that ultimately have little basis other than what equates to a hunch) that pretty much come across as tantamount to fact."

yet there was an article on here yesterday titled "djourou set to return within the week" then it states he "could be back in contention for Arsenal within seven days"

surely that title is "spreading assumption that has little basis?"

What MAD said, you're implying that if Arsenal beat Orient then everything will be hunky dory - that is simply not the case. As I said it could be played then. But could doesn't win rodeo's.

In all honesty I think your Djourou point is weak as it based on evidence, quite simply. A reputable source saying he should be back in seven days... this is just you.

Surely it will be played between 19th March and 2nd April? With the hectic schedule they have in Feb already, I'm sure they would rather play it when they have a 2 week period with just internationals in between.

Exactly? Those dates would mean it wouldn't be played in gameweek 28. However, I'm fairly positive it can't be played then because of said internationals.

This is the Liverpool game I'm talking about. The yellow was given to taylor-fletch in retrospect after a Adam foul and it came up on the screen as a taylor-fletch yellow as well... no doubt about it. Why would they have changed it from Adam to GTF later on if this wasn't the casE?

Adam has only 8 on his actyal FPL stas, as one was incorrectly awarded a few months ago, then removed. The overall stats on the assists, gaols page etc did not get updated. Its 8 dont worry!!

FPL don't decide who gets banned though, do they? Just because they awarded points based on 8, doesn't mean that is actually the case.

It should get cleared up by the time the Blackpool Scouting the Doubles article is published, so I wouldn't worry about it too much.

Not that I'm more reliable than anyone else but that game was on TV over here and I clearly remember Adam getting that yellow card, and GTF stood right next to him when he received it so some thought he got it.

I'm 99% sure Adam got it

You're not the only one who gets canal+ you know? I remember the exact situation when this happened, Liverpool was going on a counter and Adam fouled a guy and got injured himself as well. Earlier GTF had fouled though, but advantage was played and this is why GTF got the yellow after an Adam foul. This yellow was later removed from Adam by FPL because they had a look at the refs notes and what not. It even came up on the TV screen as a GTF yellow and those are usually spot on from my experience.

I'm on the other hand 100% sure that you're wrong Gargamel.

Yep, that was the situation. The yellow was given to Adam for the foul though, and the graphics were wrong. Surely you know that the graphics get things wrong every now and then.

Got an 70 point lead in my mini league now, so shouldn’t be too worried about taking hits if I have too.

    Foster (Gordon)
    Djourou Huth ColeA Clark (Coleman)
    Nani VdV Nolan Adam (Dempsey)
    RvP Tevez (Berb)

    1. Dempsey > Brunt / Bentley / Cahill???
    2. Nani, Tevez, Berb and Dempsey pick 2? I was thinking Nani and Tevez to cover bases. Generally if ManU score well, Nani does, and if ManC score, its Tevez.

First of all, great article Sir P! Kolarov will be warming the bench for me this week but he is one of the first names on the teamsheet the two after that. If it wasn’t for Tevez he’d be a more attractive captain shout then too. The potential rewards are there for all to see.

With regards to this week I was slightly annoyed with myself after using my WC on Sat I bought Ashley Young instead of Theo – That was stupid on two levels. 1) Ashley didn’t rise even though I do like him as an option this week away at Blackpool, but more importantly 2) Theo would be a double riser meaning an all important extra .1 in the kitty. Schoolboy.

Normally I would keep Theo for such a nice double but I may be forced to sell him for Fabregas and have only the two Gooners- I’m not exactly convinced he’ll get 180mins whereas Fabregas should unless they are cruising to a win – Although they were doing that last Saturday and look what happened! Along with VDV and big Roger I’d have four missing in gameweek28 even though there is still the chance that North London derby may go ahead, so I’m talking myself into ditching Theo before he has even kicked a ball in my team.

I think you have to be VERY cautious with the possibility of that game being rescheduled for later in GW28. Arsenal have been playing an incredible amount of football recently and the squad is picking up injuries. I’m not sure Arsene would be too disappointed with a free midweek slot so Andy’s phrase of the day of ‘walking down the misbegotten path of smoke and mirrors’ may be worth taking note of, although I can see your point of view as well tosey, wanting to maximise your GW27 potential.

There are so many issues nagging away at me with regards to strategy and whether to stick or twist. VDV’s injury is a concern, despite it only being a slight one – I can’t see Mr Redknapp playing him on Saturday even though he never usually rests his players. That makes me wonder if it wise to gamble on Lennon – But he scares me as a fantasy player, flashes brightly occasionally but generally frustrates. Then there is the Cahill situation, could always take a gamble and get him in, preparing for 28 and the double in 29. I am currently benching Nani if I get a double gameweeker in so that could backfire, whereas I’d play him if I got in Timmy C. Ashley Young has a great run coming up too, and he is still on pens despite Bent’s arrival.

Even with Adam potentially on 9yellows (awaiting clarification with so many different sources) I think he is too hard to ignore this week and if he gets a yellow in the first game then sh!t happens – The only thing it would do for me if it was confirmed as 9yellows would be that it probably eliminates him as a captain choice, just in case he gets booked in the first game.

Kelly is another I’m considering to ship already and replace with Walker, despite Liverpool’s upturn in form. After this week against the Latics, his fixtures are not too hot. I don’t fancy squeezing both of them in ahead of Kolarov, Huth or Coleman – And Vidic could be shifted for Baines in a week or two as well.

Jesus, Mary and Joseph I have too much time on my hands this morning! Sorry if that was too much for any of you! Rant over.

      Hello.

I'll start with Theo - I think he is a huge prospect for this gameweek. He is on good form and although he his a bit hit or miss he has the potential to rack up a simply mouthwatering score against WOL & STK. I think he basically has to play, who do you think is his big threat? Only so many players can play on his position and Rosicky had a bit of a shocker last time around and as Arsenal are still very much in the title race I think Wenger will want to play his best team.

Point two, it confuses me a bit that you want to drop Walcott because you feel you might be hurt in gameweek 28, and then make a case for Aaron Lennon who also has no gameweek in 28. Doesn't make sense to me.

My third point is that a player who has 2 games in one gameweek and 0 games in the next gameweek will get you as many points as a player who has one game in each gameweek. It's not the end of the world if you're left with 10 players in gameweek 28, or decide for a -4 hit to play 11.

Youn should do very well for you, I'll have a proper look at Villa players too once this double gameweek madness is over.

I'm not out to get you or anything Gargs, but I think there's a big possibility that Wenger will opt for Bendtner in this first game 😀 Walcott will take part in the friendly and the pl game is only a few days after that, so I think he'll want Walcott fresh for the Barca game. I also think that Bendtner will be a better option to counter the big guys in corner and set piece situations.

Hi Garg! Thanks for your comments, appreciated as always.

I hear you about Theo’s chances of scoring big – But if he plays tonight I will be slightly concerned about pitch time like MAD is. Rosicky did have a shocker though so I can see it from your point of view, it’s a judgement call! Fabs is a must have for me though so I have to get him in somehow – Though I have to rejig the side somehow to accommodate both, I will be listening closely to Mr Wenger later in the week.

With regards to Lennon I only mentioned him as a potential replacement to VDV, so he could play twice in 27 - As opposed to replacing Walcott with him and keeping VDV – That would be pointless and leaving me with the same issue of numbers in 28. But at least Lennon should play twice barring injury as Harry doesn’t do rotation.

I wouldn’t be overly concerned playing only 10 in gameweek 28, but with a WC this week I should be able to somehow ensure a full team if you include the free transfer next week.

And as for Young, I don’t think I can squeeze him in this week but there is always a player playing only the one game who gets a big haul and for me he is a slikely as any this week, against the sieve that is Blackpool’s defence.

Are you sorted for a plan of attack yourself this week or not?

I think Lennon could do well for you. He seems to have caught the eye of the bonus judges so that might be a big help. If there was a decent striker in the Spurs side it would help, I can't help but wonder who is supposed to score from his crosses as it is now.

I'm fairly sorted after my wildcard two weeks ago, going for a 442 this week and depending on my transfer I will play 10 or 11 doublers assuming there are no injuries.

I have RJ and three Arsenal players out for gw28 but I don't mind taking a point hit for that gameweek if necessary. I'm gambling on Spurs players not doing too much damage and hoping for a strong gameweek 27.

Walker should be a great choice btw, I'm going for him in a week or two. The Villa fixtures for the remainder of the season are incredible.

I just looked at the fixtures and had a tinker with the side and may just ditch VDV for Fabs to accommodate Walcott – Cue another injury on England duty later!
VDV I may be able to sacrifice for a week or two and get him back for West Ham at home. It would help if he gets yellow flagged before the weekend and before he rises again so he is cheaper to buy back but he is an option.

Villa’s fixtures are incredible and Kelly may be sacrificed for Walker at some stage, maybe even in the WC as if I can field three at the back without Kelly this week it seems pointless having him for the next few when there are stronger options elsewhere.

The more I look at Vidic and his next few fixtures the more I think it’s time to shift. But I can see Everton screwing me when they beat Chelsea in the replay!

You guys think it's quite likely Suarez will get his 1st start v Wigan? It's hard to predict Dalglish's line-ups but the 3 CB's made sense v Stoke (negate the long ball/rugby tactics) and Chelsea (Combat the 3 pronged 80 mil+ Stamford bridge strikeforce) but I can see us dropping a cb and reverting to 4-3-3 for the wigan match with Suarez coming in. Even if we do keep same formation he should be a good bet to replace Maxi who's been the least impressive player under KK. If he starts and plays well the he should hold his place for West Ham in gw28 too.
I'm looking for a striker for gw 27 & 28 (maybe longer if I have other players injured to deal with) and was fairly decided on Bent but now I'm thinking Suarez could be an inspired choice. Thoughts guys?

Guys I was looking at Nanis fixtures and they are terrible. Ive had him from the start so stand to lose money but am thinking I might transfer him out to get some strong candidates in for the run in such as Cahill/Ashley Young/Arse midfield etc. Is this wise? He has scored really well and consistently for me but think he might be limited now with a lot of tough away fixtures. Worth it?

Interesting. Have thought of losing Vidic but not previously Nani. However, I am liking a midfield of Young Cesc Cahill VDV Barton/Adam. But then again it just doesn’t look right without Nani.

I can’t not have United coverage with the potential of a double still in 28. Everton beating Chelsea is plausible after all and that confirms a United double doesn’t it?

          yes it does

the double isnt that attractive anyway imo with 2 away games ill probably go with no utd coverage

my midfield is going to be fabs vdv cahill barton adam for the run in

Best PPG in the game (excluding Puncheon......), we all bought him for about 8.5 and he's one of the main men for the team topping the table. He's in my team until he has a bad injury. Sell him and you won't get him back basically.

whilst we have differing opinions on nani and only time will tell

value isnt really that important at this stage imo unless u want a player until the end of the season

i got rid of tevez this week and will get him back next week, will cost me about 0.5 but i plan to get rid after gwk29 so the value isnt really that important now

I agree on value, it's just that if you want him back that's very very hard when he's gained so much value. I also don't see any reason why Nani's output will decrease.

              Good enough point.

Man United have 7 away games and 6 home games left though, and that stat of yours also must mean that his home PPG is very very good.

home ppg is a massive 8.6 which is almost the best in the game, next 3 gw's though (I'm presuming no dgw in 28 as it's most likely outcome) has 2 away games, one at anfield, and the home game is v city. Not sure I'll do it but I can certainly see the logic in selling him now and getting him back at a value loss in gw30. I think if you do sell you'd have to bring him back at some point, he's too damn good.

yeah mate that will confirm it. a match at stamford bridge is probably the worst possible dgw though, especially on top of another away match. I think I'm keeping Nani and selling Berbs but still toying with the idea of flogging him off this week, you can always bring him back in gw30 onwards, even at a loss of 0.5 or so it could be worth it pointswise, which is what matters.

Cheers for the input and differing opinions. I was thinking trading him out for Cahill for GW29. Aiming for a 3-5-2 for the run in (post GW30) with front 7 of

        Cahill-VDV-A.Young-Fabregas
        RVP-Tevez-Torres

Need to sell Nani for this. Only worry is lack of Utd coverage but if the numerous articles on them 'underperforming' and 'just doing enough' is true then combined with their tough away fixtures maybe they are about to get found out?

If you have VDV/Adam they are 2 who could be either injured or close to a ban, so they would be 2 I'd ship out before.

Nani has a chance of a DGW and has BOLTON west ham FULHAM newcastle

I'd lose 1 mil if I took him out which is just too much. Bol/whm/Ful in a few weeks are good fixtures and I'll only be benching him again for the Liverpool game I feel so it's not too bad keeping him in.

Yeah, it's not that or marmite.

I used to have it in sandwiches for school, and it was always like beef paste or crab paste. gross.

Sandwich Spread was a light-coloured vegetarian spread, wasn't it? Small bits of cucumber/tomato in a tangy mayonnaise sauce. Tasted the same coming back up as it did going down?

this is my starting lineup for the upcoming dgw:

    foster (begovic)
    kelly kolarov coleman (djourou evatt)
    nani vdv adam meireles (n'zogbia)
    tevez odemwingie rvp(c)

i only have 3 / 4 dgw players! but should be ok, what are ur thoughts? was going to start djourou but he may not play, and after last weeks performance i've lost faith in the gunners defence
also, should i take out vdv, if so, i was thinking of going for aaron lennon? pretty unique pick, what ya think?

    any other changes needed?

    all help is appreciated

    thx

Same starting 11, but meireles, I have Bentley.

I wouldn't rule Djourou out just yet.

I have VDV but with his doubts and double away is it worth transferring him out for Bentley?

I'd wait until Friday or Saturday morning and see if any more news has developed.

But with Bentley's 2 x DGWs he seems a good pick.

Yes, but has he actually done anything yet? He could just get 2 points per game?

8 points home to Man City. And if you watch him, you can see he's playing well.

From what I've seen and read he's been playing well, getting back to his best and taking plenty of corners and free kicks. Fixtures haven't been the best (AVL, utd, MCY, whm) but he's already standing out and I believe he played a cup game too and got a goal and assist. Zigic playing more is only good for Bentley too.

I don't know how stuck you are on Evatt, but after the double (not too sure he'll get a CS) it's a run of 2 home games (Arsenal, Chelsea) and 3 away games. There are a few other cheaper defs to consider.

Planning on bringing in Odem for the DGW. Then I just read the following...

MICHAEL Appleton is hoping to have a fully-fit squad to choose from for Saturday's crunch clash with West Ham (ko 3pm).

Is it just me or is the fact that WBA could be managed by someone who could even be their groundsman for all I know slightly worrying?!

Didn't his sisters use to be in All Saints I think. He'll get them on a diet of Black Coffee and Marmalade for breakfast.
