After the 2-2 draw at St Andrews last midweek, where Man City grabbed the lead twice only for a spirited Birmingham to cancel out their advantage, Roberto Mancini made no bones about his unhappiness as the Eastlands side fell further behind in the title race with a run of one win in four league games.

In January and February the team has looked so tired. A team like us should be winning 1-0 and be defending well, be very strong. But instead we’re gifting more chances….We can’t concede two goals every game. We must do something and play better. I think tonight we played well the first 50 minutes but after that we forgot to play. I don’t know why at this moment but I should change something.

The next game -last Saturday’s home match with West Brom- saw a change no one was expecting; new big-money signing Edin Dzeko dropped to the bench and regular left-back Aleksander Kolarov was moved further up the field, taking his place wide left in City’s front three. The home side were three up within forty minutes and Kolarov picked up an assist and two Fantasy Premier League Bonus Points for his performance.

Dzeko’s arrival seems to have presented Mancini with a conundrum similar to that of Fernando Torres at Chelsea: how do you go about fitting these fantastic players into a winning formation? Dzeko is a wasted talent out on the left wing and clearly needs to be played centrally. A look at these heat maps from those above-mentioned games illustrates the benefit of fielding players in their natural positions (a concept not lost on Kenny Dalglish of late).

Against West Brom, Kolarov stayed wide and played high up the pitch, thus giving the team a far better balance both going forward and, resultantly, in keeping shape at the back. The heat map shows he made 78% of all passes from the left wing.

In the Birmingham game, however, Dzeko dropped deep and drifted into the middle, which is, after all, the natural tendency of a centre forward. In contrast, he made just 33% of all passes from the left wing. It’s perhaps no coincidence, then, that this match saw David Bentley, directly opposite Dzeko on the pitch, pick up the 3 Bonus Points for a highly-influential man of the match performance.

These Average Position maps show the team’s shape for each game. Against Birmingham, Dzeko (10) is stationed far too central to afford the side a proper balance, meaning Kolarov (13), playing as a left-back, is having to provide the width from deep, thus exposing that flank in his forages forward.

Against West Brom, Kolarov stayed wide up front, meaning Pablo Zabaleta (5) never had to over-extend himself going forward at left-back. City chalked up their first clean sheet in four games but perhaps more importantly for Mancini, with a natural left-footer on the left flank rather than an inside-out winger or centre forward, looked far more stable for it.

City’s first team coach David Platt commented on Dzeko’s absence this week, citing tiredness more than anything else:

Edin came here after practically a month off with the winter break in Germany, and has played four games in a short space of time.We felt it needed just one front man on Saturday, to give that point of reference to move the ball around. It was purely a tactical decision, but he remains exceptionally important for us.

With the race for Champions League places heating up, however, Mancini can ill-afford to gamble much further with tactics or the bedding-in of newcomers at such a key time in the season and it may well be that Dzeko will see more time on the bench, coming on when the points are wrapped up, as he done on Saturday. Certainly, Saturday’s performance was more in line with the “good defending, being strong” ethos Mancini is calling for right now, and if the City boss felt compelled to bench Dzeko in a home game with West Brom, it would be no surprise to see him sit out tougher fixtures until the team gels with him in the side.

In the meantime, Fantasy Owners of Kolarov will keep their fingers crossed this situation continues; given that he’s already on free kicks, a fair share of corners and taking City‘s mean defensive record into consideration, this could make the £5.7m defender an outstanding out-of-position Fantasy Prospect in the upcoming game weeks.

Had a fantastically lucky 95 last week - even won a weekly prize in one league

Am struggling to decide what to do this week though with all the permutations as have VDV, Ferguson and 3 Arsenal players and need to transfer with a view to next week.

My first call is whether to start Ferguson with a DGW or Kelly at home to Wigan?

Sometimes you have to play the percentage game, are Liverpool really likely to keep 4 clean sheets in a row?

Streaks don't matter to the percentages. It's like flipping a coin that has come up heads 4 times in a row - there's still a 50% chance of it coming up heads the next time you flip it, the coin doesn't become due a tails.

They are certainly more likely to keep 5 clean sheets in a row now that they have 4.

And to clear matters up, the fact that Liverpool have kept 4 clean sheets in a row makes it more likely than not that they will keep another clean sheet against Wigan.

There is a lot of reinventing the wheel and parroting going on in this site. It seems if you read the articles and messages you find there is about ten original thinkers on this site and the rest are going over and over the same subject like a sheep chewing on some grass. VDV and Djouru being the latest subjects to be chewed into a tasteless mass of bilge. Along with shall I bench Tevez or Nani over and over. All I have to say is some questions have to be answered by the individual manager of the team and questions on players injury are only answered by Redknapp or Wenger when it comes to VDV and Djouru and that information will be announced on the respective team websites so asking on here about a hundred times about VDV and Djouru injuries is just bonkers. Plus the swiss injury news on Djouru has been announced as new news for about thirty times. When somebody discussing sandwich paste starts to be more interesting than the football talk then that is when you realise there is nothing new under the sun. Ummmm sandwich paste; time for lunch. Screw you guys 🙂

Good old fish and chips me thinks and vdv is always injured he plays injured most of the time and its all down to Harry having no strikers of worth that he has not been allowed to recover but everybody thinks he is badly injured as he went off after 45 minutes. However as with all injuries during this international period it could be a well planned rest by Redknapp for VDV as he will avoid the internationals and rest vdv for a planned rest too. Redknapp is old school with pseudo pre-international injuries to his star player so everybody being sso hyped about vdv injury well vdv has been this way from the beginning of his time at Spurs. Right lunch.

Take your point in a way Mogsy but, I would say that it depends how long you hang around. Yes if you stay too long, you'll encounter repitition.

Though I've never been a fan of individuals deciding who should talk about what and when. That's dangerous teritory.

Also, I think it's up to people to say something of more interest. Maybe you could do that with your next post 🙂

A paragraph (from the Greek paragraphos, "to write beside" or "written beside") is a self-contained unit of a discourse in writing dealing with a particular point or idea. Paragraphs consist of one or more sentences. The start of a paragraph is indicated by beginning on a new line.

Walcott. Bentley got me interested with those 3 baps the other week, but Sir Paulos has shed a little light on the reasons for that in his article, and more importantly - Larsson's delivery from the set pieces was much better and he may keep that role, which would leave Bentley as just a slightly crap winger who doesn't cross very well.

Yeah, I was going to go for Bentley, but I did some stats last night and they just don't score enough goals.

Add to that that he's up against noe of the best LBs in the league in one match, and will be pinging balls into the box against the cyclopean monstrosity that is the Sotke defence in the other, and his fixtures suddenly don't seem so good.

    Foster

    Kelly | Huth | Baines | R Johnsson

    Walcott | Bentley | Fabregas | Meireles

    Van Percie (captain) | Odemwingie

On paper it looks great for the double game week but
leaves me with an uncomfortable bench of

    Hart, Kolorov, Berbatov and Nani

So have i got my bench right do you think?

Interesting article that. RBJ was right about Dzeko's chalkboards being all over the gaff.
It'll be interesting to see how that moaney little scut Balotelli fits back in, presumably it would be as a RWF with Tevez LWF.
Not that Balotelli is getting anywhere near my FPL side though, he can cry all he wants the little shitter is persona non grata.

I quite agree, and I was hissed at earlier in the season (around the time he scored a hattrick) for saying nothing good will come from him long term, and that he would be worse than Berbatov for
        2,2,2,2,2,2,15,2,2,2,10,2,2 etc

HISSED at! He is such a temperamental scut, don't like him one bit on or off the field.

A flat-track hattrick. I'm not saying the lad has no ability, but if I was a Premier League manager I wouldn't have him on a free, he is a slightly more talented even more obnoxious version of Diouf.

I read Stuart Pearce's biog, about when he was at Newcastle and Ruud Gullit dropped him and Rob Lee to the reserves without explanation, removing their squad numbers too, Lee who was on the same training side as Gullit in a practice match rolled a right little hospital pass for Gullit, Pearce on the opposite team absolutely flattened him with a flying two footed challenge.
Apparently Gullit just got back up and got on with it. Fair play to him. He was a shite manager though.

He could go out and score big in both games. Though if it is the same Obafemi Martins I remember from Newcastle I don't think he will. Inconsistent, lazy, occasionally good. He ties his laces more than is quite right too, I suppose he does it to look busy when being a work shy slacker.

Oooh yeah, I'd do Fran's transfer, I'd be hanging out the back.

If wildcarding this week, would you include VdV if he hasn't been given the all-clear to play this weekend?

I think he might only miss 1 game (maybe even none!). I will be keeping him this GW then we should have a good idea of the situation by the following GW.

I personally wouldn't. I've been pondering his output going forward now he's playing a bit deeper.

Good other options as well: Cahill, Walcott, Nani, Young, Adam etc.

If I'm completely honest, I'm kind of hoping he's declared out for a few weeks so I can happily ship him and take a punt elsewhere.

Cahill...just don't feel he's worth the gamble at the moment. Has to be a question mark over his fitness after being involved in the Asia Cup for a month, and in his absence Everton have started scoring goals more freely from other sources. There are better options, or at least surer gambles...

Why? He didn't play anymore matched in the Asia Cup than players who didn't go in the same period - and most of those games were against poor opposition so not very exerting. He will be over the jet lag now.

He had an ugly looking knee brace on for much of that tournament, though. Also, if Saha is back on form he could steal a few headed goals from Cahill - Saha has always been good in the air.

It's quite a quandry this DGW followed by a blank for some teams... followed by another DGW..... plus question marks over key players..... (who just happen to play for the teams with a DGW then a blank!)

Don't know bout anyone else but so far I've had about 5 different plans and I'm back to square 1.

Selling VDV to give me Fabs, Walcott, RVP for the DGWs looking very tempting though. Then Fabs out for Cahill GW28. Not sure if I'm bold enough 🙂

Nasri to Walcott this week, VDV or Walcott to Cahill GW28? That way, if VDV tears it up in GW27 you can keep him and not lose the 0.5.

    Guys,

Does this sound like a reasonable plan, bearing in mind the double GW27 and blanks in GW28...I have 2 free transfers for GW27.

GW27: N'Zogbia & VDV -> Walcott & Etherington (Assuming VDV is out for both games in GW27). If VDV likely to play at least one then N'Zogbia & Rooney -> Fabs & Wingie

    GW28: Stockdale -> Begovic

I guess a lot also depends if Arsenal and Spurs actually get their game on in GW28...any ideas when this will be confirmed?

Do you think Arsenal want to play Spurs 3 days after a Cup Final? The date has been pencilled in for a replay of the cup, they haven't scheduled the game in there as an alternative.

They don't HAVE to play it just because the date might be available so plan for it to be off. Even if they did plan it, it could be off anyway so you'll never know for sure if it is on in 28 until you're in 27.

The Spurs Arsenal won't be confirmed until past the deadline, and I think relying that it will be on is a very silly move. Have an exit strategy ready if you lose all those players for that week.

Also, I personally fancy Walcott to outscore Fabregas this gameweek, but that's your call.

If you would only lose 0.2 on Nani, would you get rid, providing vdv is fit.? Im thinking:

    Nani - Gerrard/Young
    Gerrard/Young - Cahill(GW29)
    Cahill - Nani.

The 0.2 wouldn't come into my thinking - just who I think will get the most points.

It could be a good plan because lots of people can't really sell Nani if they want to get him back (I'd lose 0.8), so you could make up a few points on those people, assuming Nani's bad fixtures translate into bad scores.

Not sure what I find more frustrating, not knowing the severity of VDV's injury, not knowing the reshedule date for ARS v TOT, or not knowing how CL and EL games will affect rotation on the various squads. All I know is that because of all the unsertinty all the wildcards are going to be very similar... Except this one!

    Szczesny | Begovic
    Carr | Huth | Coleman | Walker | Rafael
    O'hara | Fabregas | Bentley | Nani | Adam
    RVP | Odemwingie | Tevez

Allows me to swap O'hara for Cahill in GW28 and Odemwingie to Saha in GW29

Ok I admit it, it's pretty much like the rest of them, only this one has O'hara!

    What do y'all think?
