After the 2-2 draw at St Andrews last midweek, where Man City grabbed the lead twice only for a spirited Birmingham to cancel out their advantage, Roberto Mancini made no bones about his unhappiness as the Eastlands side fell further behind in the title race with a run of one win in four league games.

In January and February the team has looked so tired. A team like us should be winning 1-0 and be defending well, be very strong. But instead we’re gifting more chances….We can’t concede two goals every game. We must do something and play better. I think tonight we played well the first 50 minutes but after that we forgot to play. I don’t know why at this moment but I should change something.

The next game -last Saturday’s home match with West Brom- saw a change no one was expecting; new big-money signing Edin Dzeko dropped to the bench and regular left-back Aleksander Kolarov was moved further up the field, taking his place wide left in City’s front three. The home side were three up within forty minutes and Kolarov picked up an assist and two Fantasy Premier League Bonus Points for his performance.

Dzeko’s arrival seems to have presented Mancini with a conundrum similar to that of Fernando Torres at Chelsea: how do you go about fitting these fantastic players into a winning formation? Dzeko is a wasted talent out on the left wing and clearly needs to be played centrally. A look at these heat maps from those above-mentioned games illustrates the benefit of fielding players in their natural positions (a concept not lost on Kenny Dalglish of late).

Against West Brom, Kolarov stayed wide and played high up the pitch, thus giving the team a far better balance both going forward and, resultantly, in keeping shape at the back. The heat map shows he made 78% of all passes from the left wing.

In the Birmingham game, however, Dzeko dropped deep and drifted into the middle, which is, after all, the natural tendency of a centre forward. In contrast, he made just 33% of all passes from the left wing. It’s perhaps no coincidence, then, that this match saw David Bentley, directly opposite Dzeko on the pitch, pick up the 3 Bonus Points for a highly-influential man of the match performance.

These Average Position maps show the team’s shape for each game. Against Birmingham, Dzeko (10) is stationed far too central to afford the side a proper balance, meaning Kolarov (13), playing as a left-back, is having to provide the width from deep, thus exposing that flank in his forages forward.

Against West Brom, Kolarov stayed wide up front, meaning Pablo Zabaleta (5) never had to over-extend himself going forward at left-back. City chalked up their first clean sheet in four games but perhaps more importantly for Mancini, with a natural left-footer on the left flank rather than an inside-out winger or centre forward, looked far more stable for it.

City’s first team coach David Platt commented on Dzeko’s absence this week, citing tiredness more than anything else:

Edin came here after practically a month off with the winter break in Germany, and has played four games in a short space of time.We felt it needed just one front man on Saturday, to give that point of reference to move the ball around. It was purely a tactical decision, but he remains exceptionally important for us.

With the race for Champions League places heating up, however, Mancini can ill-afford to gamble much further with tactics or the bedding-in of newcomers at such a key time in the season and it may well be that Dzeko will see more time on the bench, coming on when the points are wrapped up, as he done on Saturday. Certainly, Saturday’s performance was more in line with the “good defending, being strong” ethos Mancini is calling for right now, and if the City boss felt compelled to bench Dzeko in a home game with West Brom, it would be no surprise to see him sit out tougher fixtures until the team gels with him in the side.

In the meantime, Fantasy Owners of Kolarov will keep their fingers crossed this situation continues; given that he’s already on free kicks, a fair share of corners and taking City‘s mean defensive record into consideration, this could make the £5.7m defender an outstanding out-of-position Fantasy Prospect in the upcoming game weeks.

Jesus, if they'd won 4-3 they'd still be crowing about it now - every single City fan on here would have 4-3 in their username!

The number 34, however, does have a certain resonance for Citeh fans 🙂

Apologies in advance for the lengthy post, but have averaged over 91 points for the last weeks whilst saving my wildcard and want to maximise the potential over the next few weeks of tricky fixtures.

To that end can anyone suggest any improvements to the following plan:

    Wildcard team week 27:

    Foster (Begovic)
    Djourou, Huth, Coleman (Kelly, Rafael)
    Bentley, Walcott, Adam, Nolan (Nani)
    RVP, Odem, Tevez

Wk 28 transfers: Kelly -> Kolarov

Wk 29 transfers: Nolan -> Cahill, Odem -> Saha

For DGWs (assuming no other schedule changes) I will have 9 in wk27, 2 in wk28 and 4 in wk29.

I've done the same as you, saving my WC and averaging over 91 🙂 It's a relief as much as anything.

If you're benching Kelly I don't understand why you don't get Kolarov in now, then get Cahill in 28 to give you another starter so you take no hts for 29. Did you mean Djourou??

My plan gives me 56 games over the three GWs (not assuming GW 28 ones happen) with 36 of them at home and no hits.

Why don't you just get Kolarov in on the wildcard instead of Kelly, seeing as you won't be playing Kelly for the week you have him.

From the info you've given, that's an utter waste of a transfer.

Try to save a transfer this week, so you've got 2 before GW28 to move out a couple of the no-gamers. I'll be losing a Brum defender and a Baggies midfielder, I think, want to hold on to RVP, Fabs and Djourou, and probably VDV (although he might go for Cahill).

OK, you've twisted my arm, I'll watch it, but if there isn't a Maracana-style goal from Theo, 4 goals for Rooney and a scorpion kick by Sorensen I won't be a happy bunny.

Re the Lineker 4 goals, he went back to Barca a bit worried that he'd just scored 4 against their national team. Cue banners in the stands: 'Catalonia 4-2 Spain'!

It's not a fence, we've had no indication either way and it's not been scheduled yet.

I'm not expecting it to be played in GW28, I think it would have been plotted by now - but I have no basis to back that on.

Hence appropriate party line is that it could be (as there is a space) or it could not be (as they haven't "bothered" to do so yet).

It's not really in the interests of either side to schedule the fixture for 1st/2nd of March, with the second leg of the CL the following week.

They'll both have plenty of spare midweek slots once Barca and Milan have disposed of them.

I don't know to be honest, but I think it's a bit of a parlay between the two clubs and the local authorities on when they want it and then it goes to PL and FA for approval.

        AAa thanks

But I’m not sure I see it happening at Arsenal, to be honest. I guess a lot of it depends on formation — as it currently stands, we only use one true center-forward, and that’s really Bendtner’s most effective role (by far). But as effective as he is, he’s not anywhere close to as good as van Persie, so Bendtner’s just not going to start in that role if van Persie’s healthy. And if Chamakh could rediscover his form of earlier in the season, I have to say that I think he’s probably a better bet than Bendtner, as well. The formation has been working pretty well, and I don’t see Wenger changing it just to accommodate Bendtner, which could very well mean Bendtner could leave the club this summer. I guess in the end it comes down to how much playing time he needs — because he does play virtually every game, he’s just not in the first XI and generally won’t start important matches unless we’ve picked up a couple of injuries. But you have to think that he would continue to get at least 15 starts and around 20 substitute appearances if he sticks around, so he’s clearly a player who Arsene Wenger has a lot of time for. The decision will be up to him.

West Brom's double is as good as you could hope for. I'll have him, Odemwingie and Jara for it.....

Thank thanks. Not good not good at all. I think he is gonna get it in the second game of the double GW and will give us a headache in GW 28. Wanna bet anybody?

2 Game ban - so even if he gets booked vs Villa he'll still miss GW28, as well as the second part of the double.

FA says 9 - although it seems like we are keeping the point we should have lost in GW22 due to FPL not awarding his booking (or should that be re-awarding, as they originally had it but then took it away?)

Brunt seems to be the buzz word for the double gwk , massive fail IMO, just my opinion though.

This analysis of Kolarov is highly flawed. There is a point in that he plays well on the left compared to Dzeko, but other than that it's rubbish.

Comparing City's two fixtures of Birmingham away (who have a great record against top 4)against West Brom at home is just daft. The graphics and charts are nice but being used erroneously.

In the analysis we have two very different variables (Kolarov and Dzeko) being compared in two very different situations. Analysis like this needs to be more careful and comparing like for like. If we were comparing the two players, then the situations would have to be West Brom at home compared to say, Blackpool at home. Arsenal away compared with Spurs away.

Come on FFS and Sir Paulos. Before loads of people get on the bandwagon. I don't pay my subscription for such poor analysis, especially when you have such great tools!

I'm considering Jerome Thomas instead of Brunt, is he likely to play if Dorrans and Brunt are fit?
