Once again it was a case of so near and yet so far last weekend. Had Newcastle kept their clean sheet at home to Stoke, we would have cashed in our 16/1 treble bet after both Luis Suarez and Christian Benteke delivered on their half of the bargain. Jon Walters’ spot-kick denied us and that leaves Paddy winning and grinning, to give us even more determination to swing things back our way going into this weekend’s “flutter”.
With a full programme of fixtures, the big names come back into play. We’re not mucking about, then, calling in none other than Robin Van Persie for our opening market. The Dutchman goes into the weekend with just a single goal in five league starts but is up against a Reading defence without a clean sheet in nine, having conceded 19 goals in that spell. In a nutshell, the world and his wife is backing the Dutchman for goals with Fantasy armbands aplenty riding on Van Persie’s profits against the Royals. With short odds on a goal glut, Paddy are dangling 13/5 on two or more goals for Van Persie with a clean sheet for United against the managerless Royals. We’ll take that with little hesitation with £4 of our stake.
Arsenal’s Theo Walcott is up next. Like Van Persie, form isn’t on his side: the Gunners flyer is without a goal in his last four league starts but we’re backing him in the Scout Picks to end the blip and get back to scoring ways in the visit to the Liberty on Saturday. The Swansea defence, without the injured Chico alongside Ashley Williams, could struggle to live with Walcott’s pace and Paddy’s odds of 7/1 on a Walcott goal with an Arsenal clean sheet against the Swans appeals enough for us to wager £2 of our stake.
With just £4 left to spend, we’re happy to put half of that on Christian Benteke against basement club QPR. While Harry Redknapp’s boys travel to Villa Park off the back of two wins, the big Belgian is a force of nature and we just can’t see the R’s back four coping. The Villa defence has struggled with countless errors costing them goals but we’re happy to go with Paddy’s odds of 8/1 on a Benteke strike with a Villa clean sheet against QPR for another £2 of our stake.
We’ve reserved £2 for this weeks’s treble, then, with short odds on offer from Paddy on further goals for Luis Suarez and Gareth Bale. Such is their form right now, our bookie friends are offering 5/1 on a Suarez goal at Southampton, a Bale strike against Fulham and a United clean sheet at home to Reading. We’ll put our final shillings on that bundle of bets and hope that the form wins out.
