Now I'm home and have had time to digest, here's my appraisal of Spurs from the game today. Apologies if this crosses the fantasy border into reality, but I need to write and here is as good a place as any. I know it's going to be too long, and I wont be offended if you don't read, but please allow me my space to 'vent'.

The team selection from AVB looked fine on paper, yes a bit odd, but Assou-Ekotto has attacking tendencies and often plays high up when the LW drifts inside, and Sigurdsson has done a good job on the right, so logic follows he may be able to replicate this on the right. Caulker in the back line just continues the defensive rotation, but Naughton over Walker on the right was a departure from the norm (that should have worked - Naughton is after all a right back by trade). I expected Defoe (60 mins vs Inter, and 2 goals vs Fulham in the reverse game) to start over Adebayor (120 mins vs Inter) too.

On to the game, and it was clear from very early that BAE was lost at LW. He was found picking up the Fulham RW (Dejagah), dropping in to the defensive line to double up with Vertonghen and covering for Dembele in central midfield - all within the opening 10 mins. Either he had been given license to roam (I doubt) or he was simply struggling to work out his positioning. Spurs' lack of rhythm compounded it though - without options to pass and the absence of balls through to chase, he generally received the ball very static, back to the crowd and with a player so left footed as Benny, that meant only one thing. he passed the ball backwards. No spark, no thrust, no rhythm (apart from Vertonghen on the overlap - I honestly think SuperJan could play anywhere on the pitch and succeed).

As for the right side of the pitch the selection of Naughton hampered Spurs from the start. Don't get me wrong, Naughton is a perfectly acceptable full back - he does the defensive aspects pretty well, he is tidy and can pass the ball - occasionally out of position and slow to react to danger, but generally fine. What he doesn't do however is attack the ball and seems scared to run with it, let alone have a shot (how he scored 5 for Leicester in the Championship a couple of seasons back I'm still not sure) - this puts a lot of creative pressure on the winger and while Sigurdsson is capable - he was isolated and struggled to impact the game from wide.

Add those 2 paragraphs together and you'll see the problem Spurs had throughout - no width in attacking areas. Not a new problem lately, but certainly not solved by the selection today. The lack of Lennon to provide width on the right, and Walker who'd been providing it in Lennon's absence, compounded by the use of a left back (who struggled) and a centre back to provide the width on the left was damning and showed an apparent lack of plan B. I'd assumed that Holtby could do a decent enough job in a wide position, but given he was an unused sub today - it seems AVB doesn't agree. It's a bit galling when the reserve winger has 2 in 2 on loan at QPR and the star winger from the all-conquering U21s is also out on loan. Unfortunate, yes. Poor planning, also probably yes.

AVB is no mug however, and could clearly see what was amiss by half time. He therefore introduced Dempsey to plug the hole on the left, withdrawing Dawson to accommodate BAE back at LB. Whisperings of a slight hamstring injury for Dawson, but there was nothing obvious on the pitch. It made tactical sense to me as the forward threat from Fulham was typically withdrawn, and Caulker suits this role better - however well Dawson has played recently. I'd be surprised if Dawson is out for much time with this 'injury' - just enough to miss the international game I'd wager. But Demspey then proceeded to have a bit of a stinker. A bit more threat down the left, but with balls bouncing off the American and passes going astray, the team needed more of a boost - enter Defoe.

Defoe joined at the expense of Sigurdsson, which was harsh, as he was outperforming Dempsey by a long stretch by this point, but Gylfi rarely lasts 90 minutes, so made way. Defoe was in the game soon enough - linking play reasonably well, and better than Bale had done in that role. However - his introduction, and the persistence with Dempsey on the left, meant Bale was fixed on the right - and ended up predominantly anywhere but the right wing as Spurs chased the game - at one point putting in a shift at the base of midfield dropping between the centre backs like an old fashioned centre half. The introduction of Carroll late on was progressive and his energy had a positive impact, but a bit to much to ask of a youngster to chance the game that late on.

The goal came from a swift Fulham break - their only notable one of the game - and owed much to the work of Dejagah who beat Dembele and Vertonghen (himself having a Vermaelen-esque brain-freeze) and fed the overlapping Reither to square for Berbatov. 1 chance - 1 goal, 52 minutes gone. Contrast that with Defoe later in the half who when presented with 2 very similar chances after good work from first Caulker and then Bale, shot straight at Schwarzer both times - still no goals since Boxing day for the diminutive hitman.

A dismal display overall by Fulham, matched by a worse one from Spurs. No team deserved to win this game, but if anyone had to - the right team did from the balance of play. Spurs will bounce back and the break might do them good to have players like Lennon (and Dawson?) fully rested and back to fitness - maybe some tactical work with those left behind wouldn't go amiss either - but I wouldn't claim to be better than the man in charge when it comes to diagnosing the ills. If there is one thing AVB has demonstrated repeatedly since arriving in England, it's that he learns from his mistakes - and his Spurs team generally take heed. There's at least one Spurs fan hoping that the reaction he has called for comes right away in the visit to Swansea on the 30th.
