634x258 Suspensions

As the days tick by towards the next raising of the suspension threshold, the conveyor belt of footballers vying to show off their balancing skills grows ever richer. This week saw the second player to fall foul of the 10 card limit instantly replaced on the tightrope widget by three more eager faces, each now with nine cautions to their name. Elsewhere, a couple more red cards ensured that the ban list at Soho Square is kept fully stocked for the weeks ahead.

Marouane Fellaini
It’s not a huge surprise to see the Everton man grace these pages again. After picking up his ninth card in the previous weekend’s FA Cup home loss to Wigan, Fellaini lasted just seven more minutes on the high wire before crashing down to earth with a bookable challenge on City’s James Milner. The standard punishment for reaching double figures in yellows before the April 14 is therefore headed his way, with the Belgian set to sit out the following pair of fixtures at home to Stoke and away at Spurs respectively. From a Fantasy perspective, however, it means the ban is no longer hanging over him ahead of the Toffees’ double Gameweek 33 – Fellaini will be freshly rested and available just in time for a home clash with QPR and trip to Arsenal; with attacking returns in three of his last five, he can expect plenty renewed investment once he’s served his spell on the sidelines.

Steven Pienaar
The South African also misses the Stoke and Spurs games, further adding to David Moyes’ midfield woes. Pienaar saw red an hour into Saturday lunchtime’s Goodison game after collecting a pair of yellows due to fouls on Gareth Barry and Javi Garcia – the standard one-match ban for such a misdemeanour is doubled as this is his second dismissal of the season. A couple of spots in the Everton midfield immediately therefore open up – Steven Naismith and Bryan Oviedo could be set to benefit, though Nikica Jelavic may return to the starting XI if Moyes decides to utilise Victor Anichebe in “the hole” as a result of Fellaini’s absence.

Mark Bunn
Completing the ban list for Gameweek 30, the Norwich goalkeeper was sent off after less than half an hour of the draw against Sunderland. Bunn’s dismissal, as a result of handling outside the area and denying a goalscoring opportunity under pressure from the onrushing Danny Graham, carries a single match ban, but he has cause to feel aggrieved at the decision with the replays clearly showing the ball came off his chest. The Canaries stopper looks under threat to retain his place now, though. Chris Hughton admitted in last Friday’s press conference that John Ruddy is closing in on a comeback from the thigh injury which has sidelined him since Gameweek 13 and is expected back in a fortnight’s time. No doubt the ‘Hot Cross Bunn’ jokes were doing the rounds as Easter approaches later this month.

Luis Suárez
Having gone three games without a yellow card, and with just one solitary booking in his last 11 games before this weekend, you would have been forgiven for thinking Suárez might not trouble the disciplinarians again this season. A yellow card accrued in injury time at the end of the loss to Southampton – incidentally his third yellow in five domestic losses since Christmas, contrasted with no cards in the nine games Liverpool have won or drawn – sees the tricky Uruguayan climb aboard the Tightrope for potentially the next three games. Can he hold out and avoid the mass Fantasy sales that will result? Maybe if Liverpool return to winning ways he will.

James Perch and Stéphane M’Bia
Suárez is joined on the tightrope by Newcastle’s utility man (and third choice right back yesterday) Perch, and the midfield rock at QPR, M’Bia, with both also picking up their ninth yellows of the season in the weekend games. The Suspension Tightrope in full therefore reads as follows, with all players needing to navigate a minimum of 3 fixtures unscathed to avoid a two match ban:

  • Matthew Lowton (AVL)
  • David Luiz (CHE)
  • Luis Suárez (LIV)
  • James Perch (NEW)
  • Stéphane M’Bia (QPR)
  • Craig Gardner (SUN)
  • Gary Caldwell (WIG)

A trio of protagonists climb off the naughty step and return to action in Gameweek 30. Fabian Delph is welcomed back by Villa for the home game with Liverpool after serving a two-match suspension for picking up 10 cautions. Robert Huth and Pavel Pogrebnyak return for Stoke and Reading respectively – their three-match bans for violent conduct have now come to a conclusion.

do you guys think Fellaini will drop maximum 0.6 during his 2 GWs of suspension?

He'll drop plenty for sure, if not the full 0.6, then close to it.

He dropped £0.5m during his 3 match ban earlier in the season. I'd guess it will be less than that given he has a DGW after that.

    Afternoon Gents!

This weekend has left me with a fair few issues in my squad:

    CESAR - BUNN
    Johnson - SAGNA - Pearce - Clyne - Martin
    Bale - Walcott - FELLAINI - NOBLE - Sissoko
    Sturridge - Suarez - Rooney

Got just the 1FT and 0.6m in the bank.

I guess Afro is the priority to ditch, but without having the funds to switch up to Caz or similar I'm struggling to see an obvious option.

Other consideration is that if QPR drop Cesar (as some papers believe) I could be keeper-less this next GW.

Any ideas as to what move I could make, I would possibly be open to a -4 hit.

    Thanks,
    Stinky.

PS - I still have my wildcard, but saving that for closer to the DGWs.

You'd have to use another transfer later to get Afro back , and you avoid hit .
I have Afro and I'm considering this Snod > Maloney in my case tho.

I'm glad you mentioned it, it reinforces my opinion that it could be a good call.

As you say, I'll want Afro back in a few weeks anyway, so may as well just hold him on the bench for the sake of 2 weeks.

I missed this whole discussion on Cesar as I haven't been following QPR closely. What has he done wrong exactly?

I'd risk going keeper-less this week rather than risk wasting a transfer.

I'd wait until getting closer to the deadline as a lot could change in 2 weeks.

Apparently he was bad vs Villa, and reports are saying that Green could be straight back in after the internationals (Green was only left out vs Villa due to illness).

I will risk going keeperless, because I'll be wildcarding soon anyway.

          Sounds wise.

Aren't you tempted to build your GW33 team gradually and wildcard after GW33 for the second round of doubles?

I've not looked at the fixtures to be honest.

That's my plan, and that is why I will probably just hold onto Fellaini. As HVT says above, I will only need to get him back in anyway in a few weeks time.

Those that think RVP will be rested:

Remember Hernandez’ record v Chelsea. And Rooney ‘needs games’ (apparantly, even this far into the season, but anyway..)

Could very easily start with Rooney/Hernandez again vs. Chelsea. Also the possibility of Welbeck/Rooney vs. Chelsea as Fergie likes Welbeck in the double defensive/attacking role and would suit an away fixture vs. Chelsea. Which could then mean either Rooney/Hernandez & RVP vs. Sunderland

And with RVP out of scoring form, Fergie might want him to play Sunderland to try and boost his confidence

    So maybe think again?

Yes, he can score vs anybody.

Only way I would advocate binning Bale would be if it was for a DGW player or something, and even then he can potentially outscore them.

Saying all of that, it could prove an excellent decision if Spurs continue to stutter, but a massive gamble.

I didn't see the Fulham match/or it's stats, but it seems premature to me. He's been by far the best midfielder in the game for some time now, and only Suarez has rivaled him overall: both in terms of underlying stats and production.

Is my defense OK or should I improve it?

Currently consists of: Mertesacker, Davies, R. Martin, Demel and Harte...

I dont want to transfer on defense...

Was initially thinking of getting in Cazorla for DGW33 this week itself in preparation... But now am tempted to get in Hazard for the SOU and SUN games and then switch him for Cazorla in DGW33 as I already have Walcott and Mertesacker from ARS for the REA and WBA games...

    GreenRed makes a great point:

'You think Fergie gives a damn about off-form Van Persie’s golden boot prospects when there’s a double to be won?'

Fergie doesn't care how much RVP scores, just as long as he scores important goals. And he has. But now Rooney is too. And Chicha has and Welbeck has. The number means nothing to Fergie.

If Suarez wins the golden boot, why would he care? It's RVP's job to win it not Fergie. Fergie will give him all the opportunities to score more goals but RVP has to stop playing like Heskey!

yeah but even if he cares, what can he do about it? He can play RVP but he has to put the ball in the back of the net. He can hardly account for his lack of form apart from fatigue which is his fault in the first place for playing him endlessly. I don't mean that in a bad way but it's him that has been playing him constantly all season. With Rooney, Chicha and Welbeck etc in the team there are goals from a lot of avenues, I think Fergie said at the start he'd like if all of them scored 20 goals each, he's not really interested in personal accolades of players, just that they are all chipping in and doing their job.

True, but if Mark's point is true, then RVP will play more minutes than the other options. His lack of form is concerning but even still if you told me RVP was going to play every minute of every game there's no chance he'd leave my team because of his track record over the last two years. Obviously, the playing time stuff is all just speculation though...

All I'm saying that an inform Van Persie will coast the golden boot and help United to the double. As a Reds supporter I'll be happy if they qualify for Europa League. Suarez winning the Golden Boot would mean nothing for me, indeed some of his on-pitch antics doesn't do his reputation any favours despite being a great footballer.

    a) RVP
    b) Rooney
    c) Sturridge
    d) Forget Dimistar

Losing one of RVP or Rooney is the wisest option IMO. It's hard to know which though! I'd be tempted to keep Rooney.

I would get him in on the wildcard, not now. If you wildcard before 33, then you could leave him on the bench while you play the Matas, Hazards, Lampards, Cazorlas, Walcotts of this world.

Depends on whether that United double is confirmed for 33. If it is, I'd forget Berbasex. If it's moved back to 35-36, I think losing one of Rooney/RVP makes sense, and you can use the cash for Cazorla/Baines, maybe Andy Carroll 😉

Need some help with my team for the upcoming fixtures:
    DDG
    Dawson l Baines l Davies
    Bale l Mata l Michu l Walcott(C)
    Lukaku l Sturridge l Rooney(VC)
SUBS: Bunn l Sissoko l Cuellar l Wilson
Only transfers I'm thinking of doing is Kone for Lukaku for this GW, Michu/Sissoko for Fellaini when he returns and Baines for a 5-6m defender. Are these alright and what else should I do?
