Brendan Rodgers made his first move in the summer transfer market earlier this week by snapping up Kolo Toure on a free transfer from Manchester City. The Ivorian will join up at Anfield on a two-year deal and, having slipped down the Etihad pecking order, has reportedly taken a substantial pay cut in order to boost his chances of regular first-team football on Merseyside:

The Statistics

Initially signed by Arsene Wenger back in 2002, Toure partnered Sol Campbell at the heart of Arsenal’s “Invincibles” side that captured the league in 2003-04, and went on to play seven seasons for the Gunners, scoring nine goals and providing five assists.

Toure then moved to Manchester City in the summer of 2009 in a £16m deal and was handed the captain’s armband by then-manager Mark Hughes. The arrival of Roberto Mancini put paid to his chances of nailing down a regular role, though, and while his first couple of campaigns at the Etihad harvested 53 appearances and a couple of goals, Toure has managed just 18 starts (and 11 sub appearances) over the last two years, with Matija Nastasic and Joleon Lescott both ahead of the Ivorian in the queue to partner Vincent Kompany in the heart of the back-four

The Prospects

With Jamie Carragher now retired, Rodgers is in desperate need of a new central defensive partner for Daniel Agger. The Dane looks nailed-on as first-choice under the new Liverpool boss, missing just three games last season due to suspension or injury, and with Glen Johnson and Jose Enrique seemingly secure in the full-back berths, Toure could provide the missing piece of the jigsaw for the Merseysiders next time round.

Clearly, Rodgers isn’t convinced by Martin Skrtel. The Slovakian started 21 of the club’s first 22 league games but was dropped for Carragher and featured on just four more occasions, with the Liverpool boss heralding the latter’s leadership skills as a reason for the switch. With Srktel’s agent already making noises over a potential move to Napoli under Rafa Benitez, his time at the club could well be coming to a close.

Having won the title at each of his last two clubs, Toure would certainly bring plenty of Premier League know-how to the Reds backline. With the Merseysiders allegedly priced out of a move for Swansea’s Ashley Williams, the free deal for Toure looks yet another canny piece of business by Rodgers, though reports of a potential move for Schalke’s Kyriakos Papadopoulos may yet determine just how pivotal a role the Ivorian will play. The former City man could also operate as part of a back-three if Rodgers opts to change formation on occasion and roll out five in the middle of the park.

If he can nail down a regular berth, though, the potential for defensive returns looks particularly strong. Having conceded in each of their first six games in the previous campaign, Liverpool were hugely impressive at the back, registering 16 clean sheets in the subsequent 32 Gameweeks as they finally started to gel in Rodgers’ first season at the helm. At home, in particular, the Reds were exceptionally resilient – 11 of those clean sheets arrived at Anfield, with only 10 goals conceded in the last 16 games in front of their own fans.

Liverpool’s strong defensive record helped Agger, Johnson and Enrique all finish in the top eight for defenders in last term’s Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, with the trio also producing attacking points to bolster their points. If Toure comes in at an identical price as these three across the Fantasy games his lack of offensive threat could force him off the radar but, if he’s priced cheaper, may prove better value overall, providing Rodgers’ side can replicate the same resolve at the back next time out.

Greetings lads. Allow me to share part of my cheat sheet with you.

Likely back 4 for each country:

    England:
Smith—Caulker—Dawson—Rose (Chalobah will not start; if a defender were to be deployed at DM, it would be Lowe)

    Germany:
    Jantschke—Sobiech—Thesker—Sorg

    Spain:
Montoya—Bartra—Nacho—Muniesa (1st choice LB Planas was curiously omitted from the squad hence Muniesa shifting to the left)

    Italy:
Donati—Capuano—Caldirola—Biraghi (Biraghi didn't play at all during qualifying but is the only LB in the squad)

    Russia:
Chicherin—Burlak—Belyaev—Shchennikov (I would advise you not to invest in Russian defenders; they're going to get smoked in this group)

    Norway:
    Hedenstad—Rogne—Strandberg—Linnes

    Israel:
Dasa—Levy—Ben Harush—Tawatha (Davidadza competing for the LB spot; Dasa always gets subbed out)

    Netherlands:
Here's where it gets tricky. The only nailed-on defenders are Nuytinck and Blind.

1st choice RB during qualifying was Leerdam who got injured and was omitted from the squad. Van Rhijn (RB) and Van Aanholt (LB) were then called up for this tournament. Blind is a two-footed fullback that can seamlessly play on both sides; he might shift to RB with Van Aanholt at LB. To make things worse, Martins Indi can also play LB.

    Van Rhijn—Nuyticnk—De Vrij—Blind
    or
    Blind—Nuytinck—De Vrij—Van Aanholt

Alright, gotta go. The lady is about to wake up; I'm banned from the laptop while on vacation. Have a great day guys. Hope this helped. 😀

But Linnes did play the two latest friendly-matches as you might have noticed. Not easy to know wo'll play. Norway also has got new manager after the qualifiers so those matches might not be such a good indicator after all.

What are you basing these on Snake Juice? Good effort btw, even if i disagree with a few. Think it's been established that Martins Indi will play, Crusher confirmed it.

Also think Clyne will play over Smith, and Chalobah over Lowe. Don't agree with the Spain one. Did you just compile them from the qualifiers?

Also, whoever said Dawson is on penalties. Is that true?

Based it on data from qualifying and lineups from the past few matches, including friendlies. Been scouring reports, analyses, etc for a while now.

It's really a toss-up between de Vrij and Indi to partner Nuytinck. Indi has been coming off the bench more than de Vrij.

I think Smith will start; it seems that Pearce trusts him more than Clyne. He played throughout qualifying, was even utilized at LB when Clyne started at RB once. Chalobah only cropped up in recent matches; while Lowe has been utilized at CB, DM, and RB. Seems like he's Pearce's utility guy.

I admit that my Spain back 4 is a bit murky due to the fact that Planas was omitted from the squad. I don't see anybody else in their backline that can play LB. Nacho is a pure CB.

And yep, Dawson is on pens. It's crazy.

de Vrij and Indi to start? Interesting. Nuytinck played so well throughout qualifying though.

Nuytinck was captain during the qualifications, but that's mainly because De Vrij and BMI are the CBs in the senior team, just like Blind has now became LB in the senior team. They'll all start, just like Van Rhijn on the right.

Not sure. Hard to fit him and Isco both in. What Ive done is looked who has the best average for goals scored and goals against and then built my team around that.

Spain, Holland, and Engalnd have the best defence (less than 1 goal per game)

Italy, Germany, and Spain have the best attack (more that 2.5 goals per game)

It's not very difficult for us to spot. We run reports on the top rep earners every day. Those who look suspicious we view their profile in CC. That lists all those who have voted for them.

We then have a number of tools to put a stop to it - many of which the users in question will be oblivious to whilst they merrily continue voting thinking they're being rather clever.

Thats one of the reasons why reputation is hidden.

Switching from ea stats to Opta stats, just means the correct players are awarded baps rather than there being some randomness cause the press association cant tell the difference between distin and jags.

Not without problems ILF but at least we knew how it worked and who were the most likely to get bp's so we could get them in.

Opta don't award assists unless there is intention to get it to the other person or some such too? no lucky deflection assists etc so by their reckoning their will be less assists making the game a bit duller imo

I sent them an email a few days ago asking the same question. That was their response:

      Hi Chu,

Each season you enter a new team with a £100.0m budget to select players from again. None of your budget or points will be carried over. If you register from the same account then your previous seasons scores are stored on the game under the 'View Gameweek history' page.

If any leagues you have entered this year are renewed next season then you will be automatically entered if you register from the same account as this season.

      Hope this helps.

    Last 2 England Under 21 Games(Friendlies)

    Romania: http://www.thefa.com/England/mens-under-21s/News/2013/england-u21s-romania-report.aspx

    Austria: http://www.thefa.com/England/mens-under-21s/News/2013/england-u21s-austria-report.aspx

Going by these two games i'd predict this team.

    Butland.
Clyne, Dawson, Caulker(Played for 1st team), Rose.
    Chabolah, Henderson.
    Zaha, Shelvey, Ince.
    Wickham

has anyone seen the list of the players who've won best player at the Euro U21s tournys. It's a bit of a mishmash really. Some go on to be huge players, Mata, Pirlo and Cannavaro are great examples. But by the same token there are players who shine brightly then disappear into obscurity. Francsec Arnau, Marcus Berg, some dude called Drenthe

It seems that you can't always tell who the big stars will be with these things, though the hit rate is more than 50%.

Just been reading a few posts. I think its worth Iñigo Martínez has been frequently at CB this season and imo will partner Bartha. classed as a mid tho

I'm off the belief Van Rhijn—Martins Indi—De Vrij—Blind have pretty much been the senior back line and can't see beyond that

I reckon if any cheap German has a chance in making the line up it will be Sead Kolasinac, with his CL experience and playing for Schalke

Kolasinac is who PB thought would/should start but said he had no idea what was in the coach's head

Sorg is the established U-21 LB. Kolasinac didn't even play a minute of qualifying; was called up only recently.

Sorg is the starting LB of Freiburg while Kolasinac is backup to Fuchs at Schalke.

i think there's a possibilty that him, Lowe and Henderson will play with Shelvey with Zaha in advanced roles

            Thanks mate.

Thoughts on Butland v de Gea? I think the CS potential is much stronger in Group A and Butland might be the way to go.

That would mean I have Isco + Rodrigo and no Spanish defenders?

if you're getting Butland, why not get Muniesa?

I'm not convinced of Spain getting CS in a tough group so not sure of their value atm.

Agreed. No Spanish defs for me. Too pricey and in a tougher group.

Players called up to the 1st team qualifier so won't join up with the 21's until the 2nd match.

    gna say it now

sturridge to b top scorer next season

    by ****ing miles

now ive been coaching 4 a couple of yrs i can spot the good 1s

said it when he came in january

30 goals if he stays injury free. gr8 movement (most important) reflexes then finishing ability

    plus he is selfish
