Great Expectations

Great Expectations – Seamus Coleman

In a season where four of the previous campaign’s top six clubs are set to have a new man in charge, Roberto Martinez’s arrival at Everton is one of the most intriguing appointments in the Premier League this summer. A new formation and style of play is anticipated from the Toffees which could potentially bring a handful of their assets onto our radars – with this in mind, Seamus Coleman is the first subject of our pre-season “Great Expectations” articles.

Under previous manager David Moyes, Everton rarely, if ever, shifted from their default 4-4-1-1 formation but Martinez’s penchant for a three-man defence should boosts Coleman’s prospects considerably. Likely to line up on the right of the midfield four, with Leighton Baines utilised on the opposite flank, the Republic of Ireland international looks a real out of position prospect across the Fantasy games next time out..

Key Factors

  • Classified as a midfielder last term in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, Coleman should this time be listed as a defender. His price is likely to remain kind – a cost similar to the previous season’s 5.0, or perhaps a slight increase to 5.5 looks on the cards given the Toffees resilience under Moyes in the final few months of 2012/13. With Baines expected to rise to 7.5, Coleman’s budget-friendly appeal looks set to offer strong value amongst the Everton defence if, as expected, Martinez rolls out a 3-4-3 formation.

  • Having fallen down the pecking order in 2011/12, Coleman re-established his position as a first-team regular last time out. His game time was slightly curtailed by hamstring and thigh problems in Moyes’ final term in charge, though with 24 of his 26 appearances coming courtesy of the first XI, he was more or less nailed on as the season unfolded – injury-free, he started each of the Toffees’ last 12 league fixtures in a run that harvested seven clean sheets, three assists and three bonus points.

  • Despite playing as a right-back, he afforded a decent level of creativity down the flank. Coleman supplied five assists over the course of the campaign – only two less than Baines, for example, despite the latter’s set-piece and corner duties, and the same number as Kevin Mirallas for the Toffees. While Baines was the number one defender for assists in FPL, only five other backline options provided more than Coleman, despite the fact he missed 12 of Everton’s league matches – even if Martinez begins with a four-man defence, then, there still looks plenty to be positive about when assessing Coleman’s chances.

  • His previous campaign as a midfielder – back in 2010/11 – highlights Coleman’s capabilities from a more advanced berth. Over 34 appearances, he found the net on four occasions and also supplied four assists, in addition to eight bonus points; with more top-flight experience behind him and license to bomb forward as Martinez looks to entertain, the 24-year-old could be primed for a significant Fantasy season before the inevitable reclassification as a midfield option for 2014/15.

    - Sky Package discussion -
I downgraded my Sky package on 20 May (no more sky sports, sky movies nor HD) but I now see they have made changes (effectively increasing the costs of HD).
They now offered me 50% on Sky Sports for 3 months - is it a good deal?
I keep hearing rumours that they will come with super attractive offers soon to put down BT/BT Sports

Seems like a decent deal to me, I'd take it at 50% off for 3 months if I wasn't tied in for a 12 month contract. I'd want to start it just before the Ashes / PL season though rather than straight away ...

hard one to assess as mourinho seems to have a rep as a steady picker. i really think schurrle is a great move for chelsea (good depth/options and good age) but a terrible move for the player himself (lack of starts)

      SELL ROONEY 35M

      BUY - DiMaria 17.5m and Strootman 17.5m

Think Carrick and Strootman, with DiMaria Kagawa and Valencia/Young, and RVP up top would be an improvement......

Are Utd fans still confident about Young? Know he's been injured but seems like a one trick pony to me.

Same with Valencia to a certain extent.

There has been so much talk of Chevrolet buying out AON and paying CR7s wages directly via sponsorship to get around FFp, it cant all be hot air..... with SAF still in the fray upstairs i can envisage this move possibly happening,

    Mark,

    Just an idea:

Would it be better to have a direct link to each posters FPL team?

Say, for example, the FPL link over the grav, or where the grav should be (for those that still dont have a grav 🙄 ).

Then just keep the posters profile link on their name, as it is now.

I am aware that the FPL link is within the posters profile, but I just think pushing to buttons is too much work 🙁

I just looked at my GW1 squad from last season. I'd say there are only 5 players out of the 15 who played more than 10 games for me through the season:

    Tevez, Maloney, Michu, Bale, Demel

And I didn't even wildcard early. I know no-one gets it right first time but I always seem to start the season off with a team I soon don't want. Anyone else with a bigger bunch of misfits?

"no matter what the price" is an interesting approach. The FPL gods will no doubt be well aware of all the factors we've discussed on here and will plonk a high price on his head next season. Surely the opportunity cost has to be considered before we call anyone a must buy regardless of their price?

That sort of illustrates my point. If you want RVP (13.5), Bale (12?) and Hazard (10.5) in your squad, that's £36m gone right away, leaving you with £64m to spend on the remaining 12 players. That's an average of just £5.3m for every other player in your squad. Is it worth filling up your team with relative crap to get those 3 big hitters in?

And would Hazard at 10.5 be worth the money? Perhaps, if he can score 190 points in his debut season, but as I pointed out elsewhere only 5 players managed to score more than 200 points last season. If he gets exactly 200 points, that would represent a FPL points per £ cost ratio of 19.0, which is not exactly setting the world alight.

looking at all the states between the two players it is close. Mata had a better start to the season with more game time and more points. The second half of the season Hazard got more game time and as you would expert more points. I think both are great options but will all depend on game time so pre season will be interesting to see who will get more time on the pitch.

if both get the same time and are priced the same I would go for Mata but that is unlikely to happen. hazard will be cheaper and with a season under his belt he does look the better option

Mata is a great player, but seeing Hazard play live last season was a joy to watch.

He's already come out saying he wants to emulate the 60 goal feats like Messi/Ronaldo so it wouldn't surprise me if Jose utilises him in a similar fashion.

Looking at the final Scout Picks team of the season really does show that the FPL cream always rises to the top.

Only Davies and Jaaski started under 5m and, Benteke/Michu aside, all the rest started the 2012/13 season as high/premium priced players in their respective positions, and will no doubt be more expensive 2013/14.

Tekkers and Michu should both be 9m+ next season too, which makes it so difficult to get a balanced squad ready for the first 6 weeks of the season.

    Better start planning already... 😉

Its true, but I am hoping to be braver this year and actually find the bargain players pre season. Last year I went for the likes of Nzogbia, who may have had a good season but was never going to do exceptionally. Both Petric and Michu had the potential to be stars so I should have bought them even though they could have failed spectacularly too.

Perhaps, but it's not really supposed to be a representative team, which is also why they do not constrain themselves by transfers from week to week. Keeping to a budget might defeat the purpose of why they do the scout picks in the first place.

It's about striking the balance between the players that will get the most points, and filling up as best as possible, maybe dropping one or two of your preferred heavy hitters.

It's an indicator but nothing more. They're very often friendlies against sub-standard teams in anything but the same kind of conditions.

I'd be looking at past seasons for actual interest behind a player and just use pre-season as a potential indicator of a manager's style/preference - if you can.

Choosing defensive wing backs over centre backs for 2013/14?

Last year, on the whole, was a disappointment for centre backs and FPL scoring. Previously high scoring defenders like Haangeland/Huth/Kompany/Vidic/Dunne et al underperformed while wing backs Baines/Evra/Zabaletta/Demel 😉 flourished.

So what's the strategy for next season? Stick with attacking wing backs or opt for potentially threatening centre backs in the hope a shift happens again?

Hopefully these underperforming centre backs will prove cheaper this coming season, and fall under the radar, which could prove a real differencial so early in the season.

My main concern would be Cleanies, then i would consider attacking potential. It will be hard to decide if your going with a budget defense though.

I think if he's decently priced I'll get Vidic next season. I also fancy a bit of Reither action.

But I've planned very little, bar RvP and Bale, much will depend on price, fixtures and rotation. I await those all important spreadsheets

I don't think there was too big of a shift. Vert banged a couple in from CB, Shawcross had a bonus point frenzy period, Ivanovic at the start?

Baines has been similar for a while. Evra didn't have a great season 11/12. Demel got lucky :D. On the other hand, where was Assou Ekotto? Walker?

Swings and roundabouts. Different players go off at different times. Big team wing backs were a lot better this season, but CB's will back on form soon enough... except for Dunne. Never again.

But Vert always seemed more attractive when played on the left in terms of goal threat, which seems to point to having 5 wing backs in your side.

However, players like Huth/Haangeland/ Vidic were FPL beasts from set pieces in previous seasons, and a good price drop could tempt me back..... to the centre. 😉
