Scout Report – Emanuele Giaccherini

Sunderland boss Paolo Di Canio’s summer spending spree continued yesterday with the capture of Emanuele Giaccherini from Italian champions Juventus. The 28-year-old arrives on Wearside in a four-year deal reported to be in the region of £6.5m and is the ninth new player to sign up at the Stadium of Light over the close season as Di Canio attempts to improve upon last term’s seventeenth place finish:

Upon completion of the deal, the new boy admitted to the Italian media that next year’s World Cup in Brazil played a key part in the move, as he looks to nail down a regular role on Wearside:

“I am full of enthusiasm and want to do good things as part of this adventure. I want to thank [Juventus] coach Antonio Conte. In the last two years he has given me the possibility to shine and make a name for myself here. A big part of my success is down to him. I thank him for that and will do so personally in the next few days. I have got into the national team now and I want to stay there. I will do everything for that. I hope this new adventure can push me to the World Cup. I will do my best playing in the English championship, which is the best in the world. Yesterday I spoke with Paolo Di Canio. For me, due to the fact that I don’t know the language, he will be a fundamental reference point, especially on the field.”

The History

Giaccherini’s career began in the 2003-04 campaign, where he notched 15 times for Cesena’s youth team. Over the next four seasons he was farmed out on loan to lower tier clubs Forli, Bellaria Igea and Pavia but his development seemed to stall, with just 13 goals scored over 87 matches for the three sides. Returning to his parent club in time for the 2008-09 season, Giaccherini helped Cesena rise through the divisions and eventually settle in Serie A, with 20 goals and four assists over 97 appearances.

His displays subsequently saw Juventus come calling in August 2011. Over his two seasons with the “Old Lady”, Giaccherini featured 40 times (with 21 of those appearances arriving off the bench) and produced four goals and six assists as the club won back-to-back league titles. He’s also featured 14 times for the Italian national side, scoring twice and providing a trio of assists.

The Prospects

A versatile campaigner, Giaccherini offers options on both wings in addition to through the middle. While the former Juventus man is more than capable of flourishing in “the hole”, Di Canio’s acquisition of Jozy Altidore suggests the Black Cats boss is looking to field a front two, with the US international expected to partner Steven Fletcher up top for Sunderland next season.

Standing just five foot five, Giaccherini is an archetypal wideman, with his trickery and directness in possession likely to torment many a full-back in the season ahead. Furthermore, he will bring a much-needed creativity to the Black Cats’ ranks – statistics show he provided a “key pass” at a rate superior to any Juventus team mate last term.

Certainly, regular game time seems secure for the new boy. Di Canio looked unconvinced by James McClean as a first-team option, with Giaccherini perhaps set to be handed the role on the Sunderland left, with either Adam Johnson or Stephane Sessegnon selected on the opposite flank. Yet to be added to any of the Fantasy games, a price of 7.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) looks on the cards, mirroring the cost of both Johnson and Sessegnon.

While there’s no doubt Giaccherini’s transfer is something of a coup for the Wearsiders, the initial schedule is likely to be enough of a deterrent to prevent any real bandwagon picking up in pace. Granted, an opening day home clash with Fulham, allied with a Gameweek 3 trip to Palace, has the potential for points but beyond that, a run of games which pits the Black Cats against Arsenal, Liverpool, United, City, Chelsea and Spurs in six of seven home fixtures between Gameweeks 4 and 15 is likely to dissuade even the most optimistic of Black Cats fan from investing from the off, allowing the little Italian time to settle before we consider splashing out on his services.

Penny for your thoughts on Ben Arfa.

At 7.0 he could be a steal as Newcastle should do much better with a fit squad and no Europa league distraction. But the first game away to Utd and the Kinnear issues are putting me off, is that about right?

It's true those fixtures look nice, but aren't west ham a bit of a bogey team for Newcastle?! facing Nolan in midfield will hardly be desirable, and Fulham clearly tightening up at the back and an away game to an upcoming villa... Yeah i'm hoping Bent will come as he'd be definite coverage.

ben arfa in a good day can wreak havok on any defence, but his main problem, other than injuries , is that he takes the dribbles a bit too far, wasting shooting or passing opportunities that would arise.
He could be great, but usually he just ends up being flashy. I cant get past all the opportunities he squandered. Add to that injury prone and tough fixtures, im out.

I'm particularly looking forward to having a tinker with the new KPI tables. I think there is something to be said about players who end the season poorly. I seem to remember Silva doing badly in the second half of the season two seasons ago then that poor form continuing into the new season.

There needs to be some analysis done on this because certain players such as Lambert and even RVP dropped off a bit at the end of last season. I wonder if this could continue into this season? Some proper analysis will be useful to help draw some statistical conclusions.

Some points from Mourinho´s press to mull over:

`The good thing with my previous players is that what I see makes me very happy,' said Mourinho. 'I don't see them any different to before. When I see Terry, Cole, Lampard and the way they are working at 32, 32 and 35, it's easy for me to control the group and demand the same from the other guys.

'I can say: Look that them: they don't miss one minute; they are training like animals; they compete. So you, who are 18, 19, 21, don't tell me you can't do it.'

Having named his team, Mourinho confirmed that he would like to keep his team in a 4-2-3-1 formation, with the ability to flex into a 4-3-3 when necessary, with the proviso that he might throw two 'pure strikers' up front if he was chasing a goal.

'It is my favourite system,' said Mourinho, as he explained his 4-2-3-1 blueprint. 'Sometimes I change the triangle. Sometimes I play with one in front of the defenders and two players up and sometimes I play with double midfielders and No.10.

'This is a team where we have three or four players who like very much to be a No.10. Kevin de Bruyne likes it, Oscar likes it, Juan Mata likes it, Eden Hazard likes it. They can play in other positions but they like that No.10 position. It is a natural system for all these players to play.'

yep it looks like a narrow 4231 formation where the fullbacks bomb forward is how it will be again. I find the comments about the old guard interesting. To me it sounds like they are crucial to Mourinho and that he will look to start all three of them regularly, at least for the start of the season anyway to help the team settle in.

I've seen a number of people posting RMTs and trying to find the money to upgrade JRod to Lambert, but is that much of an upgrade? Once JRod had nailed a place down he more or less matched Lambert for points in the last 12-15 weeks.

This is a bit like the Sturridge/Suarez comparison last season for me. You could be right but a season of good scoring is different to a specific shorter period. See Rooney/RVP also.

My attempt at getting in both RVP and Bale:

    Ruddy (Boruc)
    Collins, Dawson, Parr (Clyne, Chester)
    Nolan, Bale, Hazard, Silva (Thomas)
    RVP, Aspas, Anelka

Although I've been able to get attacking coverage from all the top teams bar Arsenal, I don't think I'll pursue getting both big guns as it clearly leaves the rest of the squad very weak.

    Hey guys,

Some work friends are doing an EPL league again this year and invited me, i watch a lot of EPL and thought i'd go alright.

    Would love some opinions:

    GK: Mannone (Boruc)
Def: Collins, Clyne, Turner (Chester, Turner)
Mid: Bale, Hazard (c), Walcott, Snodgrass (Thomas)
    Fwd: Lamber, Aguero, Sturridge

Fantasy Football Scout Daily Hot Topic

With so many good 4.5-5.5 defensive options in the FPL game and a new bonus point system that is more likely to reward centre backs in that price range is there now no future in the uber defensive strategy, of only selecting cheap defenders.

Or are there any ultra cheap 4.0m defenders that you think could clean up under the new bonus system?

Thought this very thing myself when I saw the prices. I don't see the point of picking rubbish 4m players when you can spread the cash accross your back 5; there's no reason to spend more than 6m on a defender at the start IMO.

I don't know if any of the nailed on 4.0s (Parr, Ward, Chester, BTurner, etc) will fare well under the new baps system in the Premiership--really none of us do. But I think the real question is whether the difference between the points those ubers get and the points the 4.5-5.5ers get is more or less than the extra points you earn by being able to buy more expensive attacking players. Put more concretely, if getting Parr and Chester makes it possible to buy RVP over Aguero, are, say, Coleman and Collins going to outscore Parr and Chester by more than RVP outscores Aguero? When you consider that Parr and Chester will usually be on the bench, I think I might take the chance because I expect RVP to score much better and more consistently than Aguero.

The optimal way of distributing funds is of course at the core of this, but this season there seems to be a hell of a lot of value to be had in the 4.5-5.5 category that we simply haven't had in previous seasons

Personally, I don't see that it makes a difference (to me).

If I'm getting a cheap defender it's with the intention of having a decent chance of getting clean sheets from them. If the defender gets a clean sheet he has the same chance of bonus points as a pricier defender.

Also, as has been pointed out elsewhere, I'm yet to be convinced that there'll be a big shift in bonus point allocations under the new system. Sure, defenders average better under the new system, but I assume midfielders and strikers will still see more spikes in their points and hoover up the bonus points when they score. I imagine defenders will only really benefit in very low scoring games.

I really don't see many clean sheets for the 4m defenders as they all come from promoted clubs (correct me if I'm wrong), who are widely expected to ship goals.

I reckon I'll start the season with a Palace and a Hull defender (and Marshall).

I won't be relying on them week in, week out but it would be foolish to imagine they won't keep any clean sheets. I know predicting them is the hard part but look at the last couple of seasons - people are now filling their teams with West Ham, Southampton and Norwich defenders due to their performances.

We knew about West Ham though - Big Sam was always going to have a defensively solid team.

Plus Norwich and Southampton have at least one season's experience in the PL, hence why they are so popular. Plus Norwich had a lot of success last season defensively.

I see what you're saying, but this year I'm not backing any of the three promoted teams defensively. I'm happy to be proved wrong and dowgrade to some 4m bargains after a few weeks though!

It was bound to happen eventually - I had a reply fail moment to this comment earlier.

To avoid a spammy repost: I think the new bonus system should really spice up the debate of 'uber' vs 'mid-price' vs 'luxury' - which in turn should have an interesting effect on how we allocate our budget elsewhere. With the plethora of mid-priced midfield options available, we could be in for an extremely interesting season.

Hats off to FPL, they've priced all the assets competitively and the new bonus points* may reward some under-appreciated players such as mid-priced defenders and defensive midfielders a lot more.

Quick question - does anyone know what the FPL code is? Am I being a little bit slow? Should I go have gone to SpecSavers?

*the concern is of course, the new bonus system may reward players for blocks etc., they may still continue to lose out (perhaps by a very narrow margin) in individual games to the more explosive, attacking performances.

The Chelsea offer to Man Utd to me is very clever thinking and a calulated risk by Chelsea. There is no way Utd would sell Rooney directly to Chelsea, whey would increase one of there rivals chances of winning the PL dramatically. Utd very much need a quality attcking mid, Mata would be the perfect fit for them. Jose believes his midfield without Mata, but with the addition of a top striker would be a more potent side. He also has the option to replace Mata. It also inicates to me that Ba will now definatly leave.

I can understand not wanting Luiz, but not wanting Mata!?!?!? It doesn't matter if you've already got att midfielders, he's a huge upgrade on them all. It's like not wanting Messi because you already have RVP.

I honetsly can't get my head around Mourinho not wanting to keep Mata. Even if you go with the theory that he won't fit into Chelsea's planned formation, why would you sell your star player to your league rivals?

Would like to hear some thoughts on a proposed approach / strategy - especially in the first couple of weeks that I've though on. The selection percentages already show the lean towards the top players of last season (makes sense) - meaning pretty high costs as well.

What I've seen is that the first couple of the weeks of a season are weird in that team and players need to find rhythm and form. Thus your typical big names won't necessarily justify their price tag. Also everyone else has them so no real advantage in mini leagues etc.

I was wondering if an approach favoring the 2nd / 3rd best / popular players at a lesser cost might not give you a bit of and advantage both budget and differential wise. By this I mean that you get say your one of two "must owns" but then for the rest you change course a bit and instead of going for Lambert go for JRod or instead of going for Kun get Dzeko (assuming they don't get another forward of course). In my case I'm considering Sagna (who will be properly fit this time around) instead of the much selected BfG. You get the idea.

I'm just thinking out loud here so some ideas / opinions would be welcomed!

Early season punts look attractive. But experience in the league and against the other teams is essential imo.
You can lose a lot of ground early on with a lot of gambling and force yourself into hits or an early wildcard.

Could still work big time though.

Yeah look I agree with experience - I'm not suggesting to go for totally unknowns / unprovens but rather a lean to the second favorites in each group like I pointed out in the examples. Lampard over Hazard for instance..that sort of thing!

We're still not seriously considering to give the likes of Lucas/Carrick/Arteta a spot in our midfield though?

Time will tell whether the new BPS will have an effect on this.

Usually Hazard, but with the way Lamps finished last season and the fact that his biggest fan is now managing the club, Lampard. Plus the money of course.

So, anyone putting Rooney, Hazard, Apil and Terry (or something similar) in their teams now so that they can have 4 Chelsea players if the DGW goes ahead? 😉

It would mean you can't change your team from now till kickoff.

      Can you do that?

Well, I won't be doing it, no, I just thought I'd put it out there 😉

If nothing else you'd be completely stitched up for the blank GW3!

Goes against my normal tactic but if the Rooney deal happened late in the summer giving me enough tinkering time beforehand I'll consider it 🙂

It would also stop me doing something cataclysmically stupid, like getting N'Zogbia ... again...

Would it? Would it though? Maybe pop him in your team now just to see how it looks...

Why's everyone getting so excited when Rooney IS NOT FOR SALE?

RVP had a reason to leave, he wanted something Arsenal couldn't give him. The only talk from Rooney is that he's "confused" about Moyes' comments.

Because we've learned better than to trust anything that comes out of a managers mouth when it comes to sales?

You have to say that or it encourages lower bids.

Exactly. If the player wants out and you admit it as a club it reduces your bargaining power.

If Rooney moves to Chelsea, is he instantly one of the top 2 players at Chelsea?
