According to reports today, Andy Carroll is all set to make his Liverpool debut against Manchester United on Sunday. The £35 million record signing has been injured since joining the club and, after slumping to an unconvincing Premier League defeat to West Ham, manager Kenny Dalglish will been keen for Fernando Torres’s long-term replacement to make his long awaited debut.

After being sidelined since the end of December it would be surprising if Carroll started the game. However, given the fact that Manchester United are missing Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic, Carroll’s presence could be the perfect weapon to capitalise on an untested central defensive partnership of Chris Smalling and Wes Brown on Sunday.

As for the longer-term Liverpool line-up, Carroll’s introduction to the fold means a likely shift to accommodate the big striker. Dirk Kuyt has recently been used as a target man, seemingly filling the void until Carroll’s debut, and although the Dutchman played this role earlier in his career, it is not his most accomplished position. Kuyt will surely make way and switch back to midfield, with Carroll becoming the primary forward. Luis Suarez, who has shown glimpses of his skill and technique since arriving from Ajax, seems likely play just off Carroll as a second striker, coming deep to influence matters as Wayne Rooney and Carlos Tevez have demonstrated for United and City this season.

Dalglish has experimented with formations since taking the reins in January. The Anfield legend has trialled 4-4-2, 4-2-3-1 and 5-3-2 systems, amongst others. It is unclear which approach the manager will opt for with Carroll’s arrival, but it should be expected that Steven Gerrard and Raul Meireles will play deeper midfield roles; that would obviously hamper the potential of the Portuguese playmaker.

It will be interesting to see who Dalglish drops to the bench. With Gerrard practically untouchable, one of Kuyt or Lucas Leiva could face the chop. The Liverpool boss could even bench the in-form Meireles. His 5 goals in his last 7 games should guarantee a starting berth in the short-term, although having suffered an injury at Upton Park, he will go into Sunday’s game as a doubt.

Liverpool’s upcoming fixtures hardly offer Carroll an easy opening to his Anfield career (MUN, sun, wba, MCY, ars, BIR). As well as the ever-feisty affair with Manchester United, Dalglish’s men must also face tricky encounters with Manchester City and Arsenal. But, regardless, Carroll’s Fantasy Premier League owners (and there’s still 21.8% of you out there) will be thrilled that he is close to a return. Despite retaining decent ownership, Carroll’s price in the FPL has dropped from a peak of 6.4 to 5.8.

We must of course wait for more “official” news on Carroll’s return to action. Dalglish is set to call a press conference tomorrow morning (Thursday 9.30 am) where more may well be revealed. Should he confirm Carroll’s return, the big number nine will surely come back onto our radars as a possible replacement for the stricken Robin Van Persie.

johnfinlay John swears he'll deliver unbiased Fantasy Premier League tips and news...until Leeds get promoted.

    Cricket

I dont know much at all but on bbc it says -

    England: 327-8 (50.0 overs)
    Ireland: 229-5 (36.0 overs)

is 100 runs in 14 overs realistic?

yes. Although the fact that they have lost 5 wickets could be a problem. If O'Brien gets out it is probably over

It's 10, and usually the last 4 of those aren't very good batsmen.

ahhh ok, is there no use in keeping one of your better batsmen back? or do you want to do all your scoring as soon as possible just seems like it would be a bit of psychological blow losing your first 6 then just giving up.

You need 10 wickets. But 5-for is going to make it a little harder for them. As Pompeyfan said, once O'Brien goes out, it will be all over.

Do anyone consider A.Johnson for this GW?

Fulham attacking seems not one of the good, but the fixture (BLA, eve, BLP) is actually quite interesting.

Fabregas is causing me a headache. I still have him and don't know whether to keep him or get rid.

The problem is if he only misses one week I will want him back. The flip side of that is he gets injured quite often and is expensive to have languishing on my bench.

I think that you should keep him if there are other needs on your team.

He may be back this weekend. Even if not he probably plays GW30 anyway and, without Van Persie or Walcott he'll be the main threat. Plus will be on pens til RVP returns.

If Wenger comes out on Friday and says Fabs is playing I'd rearrange my plans and get him back now that Van Persie is out.

Christ on a bike, after advising many not to go near Zigic this week, having looked at his stats and looking at what I plan to do, what would people say to the following team for a 4 point hit:

    Foster
    Carr/Coleman/Kolarov
    Nani/Young/Lampard/Barton
    Zigic/Rooney/Tevez(C)

    Begovic/Walker/Huth/Adam

Next week hold fire and have two the following week to go Zigic OUT Carrll IN, Huth OUT Luiz IN? Cheers

You could have said hold fire this time last week and it wouldn't have happened this week, that's my reservation. Who knows if you'll actually be able to do those transfers in GW30?

For me Huth and Walker are both entirely plausible options this week, that's why I'm not planning a hit myself.

The point I'm trying to make is that saying "I won't make any transfers next week" now doesn't mean you won't end up having to, I'm not actually referring to anything you said last week.

Don't get me wrong the team looks good, and getting RVP out is perfectly sensible - it just seems risky to me to do so for a hit when you've got a decent bench and it's not a long term move anyway.

                  Yea we do!

I've still got RVP (plus Fabs, Cahill, Barton and RJ) so I'm going to ship him for Rooney as the most promising medium term option. If it emerges either Barton or RJ aren't going to make it I'll consider another transfer for a hit. Not sure what that would be, possibly Nasri in for Fabs or Timmy, I would have done Wingie to Zigic as a luxury transfer if the news on RVP had been different and/or Cahill wasn't out as well. Pain in the ass.

Not sure about Lampard....lots of money that could be better spent elsewhere.
      I personally hate Kolorov.
      Frontline great- (same as mine)
Your changes as well are good. I plan similar...I'd keep huth tho if I were you and switch Kolorov out for Luiz.

When I hadKolorov I was sad and frustrated. After getting shot I've really enjoyed FPL.

I've gone for Zigic too. Best attacking dgwk prospect by miles.

I felt that way about Kolarov a few weeks back, I know believe he can build his attacking returns, and they have good fixtures, I am not sure about Lampard either, but I think they will blow Blackpool away, and I am not convinced Malouda is the same player in that formation (well he isn't, he is not playing as part of a front 3), and Torres/Drogba are just too open to rotation.

Thinking about it, cheers for comments lads

Fastest World Cup 100 is 66 balls by Matthew Hayden ... Afridi holds ODI record at 37 balls so O'Brien can't quite beat that !
