According to reports today, Andy Carroll is all set to make his Liverpool debut against Manchester United on Sunday. The £35 million record signing has been injured since joining the club and, after slumping to an unconvincing Premier League defeat to West Ham, manager Kenny Dalglish will been keen for Fernando Torres’s long-term replacement to make his long awaited debut.

After being sidelined since the end of December it would be surprising if Carroll started the game. However, given the fact that Manchester United are missing Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic, Carroll’s presence could be the perfect weapon to capitalise on an untested central defensive partnership of Chris Smalling and Wes Brown on Sunday.

As for the longer-term Liverpool line-up, Carroll’s introduction to the fold means a likely shift to accommodate the big striker. Dirk Kuyt has recently been used as a target man, seemingly filling the void until Carroll’s debut, and although the Dutchman played this role earlier in his career, it is not his most accomplished position. Kuyt will surely make way and switch back to midfield, with Carroll becoming the primary forward. Luis Suarez, who has shown glimpses of his skill and technique since arriving from Ajax, seems likely play just off Carroll as a second striker, coming deep to influence matters as Wayne Rooney and Carlos Tevez have demonstrated for United and City this season.

Dalglish has experimented with formations since taking the reins in January. The Anfield legend has trialled 4-4-2, 4-2-3-1 and 5-3-2 systems, amongst others. It is unclear which approach the manager will opt for with Carroll’s arrival, but it should be expected that Steven Gerrard and Raul Meireles will play deeper midfield roles; that would obviously hamper the potential of the Portuguese playmaker.

It will be interesting to see who Dalglish drops to the bench. With Gerrard practically untouchable, one of Kuyt or Lucas Leiva could face the chop. The Liverpool boss could even bench the in-form Meireles. His 5 goals in his last 7 games should guarantee a starting berth in the short-term, although having suffered an injury at Upton Park, he will go into Sunday’s game as a doubt.

Liverpool’s upcoming fixtures hardly offer Carroll an easy opening to his Anfield career (MUN, sun, wba, MCY, ars, BIR). As well as the ever-feisty affair with Manchester United, Dalglish’s men must also face tricky encounters with Manchester City and Arsenal. But, regardless, Carroll’s Fantasy Premier League owners (and there’s still 21.8% of you out there) will be thrilled that he is close to a return. Despite retaining decent ownership, Carroll’s price in the FPL has dropped from a peak of 6.4 to 5.8.

We must of course wait for more “official” news on Carroll’s return to action. Dalglish is set to call a press conference tomorrow morning (Thursday 9.30 am) where more may well be revealed. Should he confirm Carroll’s return, the big number nine will surely come back onto our radars as a possible replacement for the stricken Robin Van Persie.

johnfinlay John swears he'll deliver unbiased Fantasy Premier League tips and news...until Leeds get promoted.

Probably going to bring in Saha as part of a DJ to Saha / Cahill to Nasri 4 point hit gambit.

Any thoughts on Osman though. His stats suggest he scores reasonably well if he gets pitch time. Might all the injuries see him play both games?

Osman will run wild now...he's definitely in better condition than Arteta. Osman and the German a@ west ham are my favorites to boss the pitch this week. He and the Russian are sure to play both matches now.

Guys, can I have your advice please on my team.

Currently I am v doubtfull to get 11 men out (without any new injuries/ rotations) and have already done my transfer. I would at some point like Luiz into the team. I have £0.4m cash.

    Foster (Bergovic)
    Coleman, Huth, Kolorov, Johnson (Kelly)
    Nani, Silva (Barton, Fabs, Cahill)
    Zigic, Rooney, Tevez (c)

Considerations: would like VDV back but will he start this week? Would like Dejorou for Kelly though not really for a hit. Like to keep fabs though would free up cash. like nasri and downing/ young and adam once ban is over! like Luiz and would also like a cheapie defender at some point. Would like Cahill out.

    Advice would be v welcome.

You first step would be to get rid of players who won't be playing at all. You need to lose either Cahill or Fabs first off. You can get in Nasri or Young or VDV (if back, idk)..

There are enough differentials you could choose without the risk of them not playing. Not worth it imo.

Lampard would be a better bet of the two.

    From BBC live text.

"Think Arsene is not giving Orient enough respect with that team. In my opinion they now deserve to lose."

Really, that team should be able to beat Orient. It's a little harsh, arsenal have been playing 2 games a week for ages and it's clearly taken its toll given the recent spate of injuries.

I was pretty much expecting/hoping he wouldn't start anyone who started on sunday. Not just me, this guy is a fool right?

No, but they underperformed and were away - Orient probably stepped up their game too? You're not suggesting Orient matched Arsenal on ability surely?

Their schedule is too hectic not to give some players a rest, and this is surely the best opportunity.

I just agree that ARS are fielding a very weak team...maybe for good reason (rest)...but why no Nasri? He's gotten plenty of rest.

Yeah they are fielding a weakened team - clearly.

But there is no maybe about it, players need a rest. I imagine he wanted everyone who played on sunday to have a rest. Why not Nasri? Just got back from injury and they will presumably be relying on him quite heavily for the weekend and Barca.

There is enough quality in the 'weak' Arsenal team that they should smash Orient - they are a pretty poor team tbh that massively overacheived by forcing a replay.

Who to sell from Cahill, VDV or Van Persie? I know VP is out for three weeks but I'm unsure of the other two. If I do, not sure who I'd put in for him as I already have Berbs and wish I had Rooney instead.

I guess three things are value that you'd lose, who is MORE injured and who you would rather keep.
I think VDV could play unless rested but is fit
        Cahill out three weeks
        RVP a couple

My opinion would be Cahill then RVP then VDV last
Berba is fit at least, so silly to take him out

Not disimilar to my possible team if I do Cahil to Nasri and DJ to Saha, which I am contemplating. So I would say it is a very decent team. The only r difference is that I have RJ instead of Ridgewell and am hoping he recovers from his exterions in the CC Final.

I am also monitoring Barton's situation and may sell him for an Everton Midfielder for him If I feel like a punt.

What do you think to these.

Adam and Van Persie to Nasri and Saha/Zigic - 4 point hit

    or

Fabs, Adam, and Van Persie to Lamps, Nasri, and Zigic for 8 points.

I'd then have 12 but that includes Berbs so 11 really going on recent form.

        Foster (Begovic)
        RJ, Coleman, Djourou, Huth (Simpson)
Nolan, Arteta (c), Lampard (Nani, O'Hara)
        Rooney, Tevez, Zigic
