Scout Report – Roberto Soldado

While the media spotlight continues to shine firmly on a certain Welshman, Andre Villas-Boas has added to the Tottenham ranks with the acquisition of Roberto Soldado from Spanish outfit Valencia. Having passed a medical, the 28-year-old arrives at White Hart Lane for a club-record fee of around £26m and is the third player to sign up this summer, following Paulinho and Nacer Chadli to the club.

The History

A product of the Real Madrid youth academy, Soldado – in a similar situation to Chelsea’s Juan Mata – was rarely given a chance to establish himself as a regular at the Bernabeu. His career began back in 2002, where over the period of four seasons playing for Madrid’s “B” team Castilla, he notched 64 goals in 120 league matches. Farmed out on loan to Osasuna in 2006, Soldado produced 11 goals in 30 appearances but returned to his parent club once again the following year and, by the time he left for Getafe in 2008/09 for a mere €4m, had been handed a mere 16 first-team appearances by Madrid, finding the net on a couple of occasions.

With regular game time under his belt, Soldado quickly set about becoming one of the most lethal marksmen in the Spanish top-flight. Over two seasons at Getafe, he notched 29 goals and four assists in 60 matches, despite 11 of those appearances arriving from the bench – his exploits caught the eye of Valencia, with the club snapping him up as a €10m replacement for David Villa.

Soldado’s three-year tenure at the Mestalla was a hugely successful period as he demonstrated a consistency of scoring which is sure to make him a Fantasy favourite. His first term, back in 2010/11, harvested 18 goals and three assists from 34 matches, while the following year saw him produce 17 goals and three assists in 32 appearances. His final season in La Liga turned out to be Soldado’s most prolific, though, with 24 strikes and four assists from 35 league games highlighting his attacking potential. From a disciplinary point of view, he did have a penchant for picking up yellow cards, however, earning 49 cautions over the previous five domestic campaigns.

On the international stage, Soldado has represented his country at every youth level from Under 15 to Under 21, scoring 25 times in 41 appearances, and has also turned out for the senior side on 11 occasions, with six goals to his name.

The Prospects

A classic style centre-forward, the five foot eleven Soldado is adept with both feet, strong in the air and possesses a mobility and intelligence of movement which is always able to buy him a yard or two breathing space against the most diligent of man-markers. Being a penalty-box-predator-type, he rarely drops deep, though, and has a tendency to play on the shoulder of the final defender, utilising a decent turn of pace to gain an advantage.

If he brings his La Liga form to the table, the Spaniard’s arrival at White Hart Lane looks set to give Fantasy managers a bona fide frontline option in the season ahead, with the chances of spot-kick duties also looking likely. Villas-Boas’ preferred lone striker system – whether it be a 4-2-3-1 or 4-3-3 this time out – will surely see Soldado as the main man up front for the north London outfit, with Emmanuel Adebayor and Jermain Defoe likely to rely on game time from the bench as back-up.

While Gareth Bale’s heroics saved Tottenham time and again in 2012/13, Adebayor (25 games, five goals) and Defoe (34 games, 11 goals) were far from prolific, with the club a little too reliant on the Welshman’s talents from one Gameweek to the next. Soldado’s arrival is expected to remedy that and bearing in mind Adebayor and Defoe are priced at 8.0 and 8.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) respectively, a ceiling of 9.5 looks likely for the Premier League debutant.

Granted, if Bale stays, it’ll take a brave Fantasy manager to overlook the Welshman but an eye-catching run of opening fixtures will also bring Soldado immediately onto the Fantasy radar. Home games against Swansea, Norwich, West Ham and Hull, allied with trips to Palace, Cardiff and Villa in the opening nine Gameweeks, affords the Spaniard the perfect platform to get quickly off the mark, with his goal-getting ability likely to persuade many a Fantasy manager to scramble aboard the early-season bandwagon. Those who don’t subscribe to the notion of “coverage” could well be looking to double up should Bale remain, while those unwilling to invest in more than one premium player per side will surely turn to the new boy as their Tottenham attacking coverage if the Welshman does decide to depart these shores.

very seriously thinking about 1 for a few reasons

      1) International break - 2 weeks of wheeling and dealing to increase tv
      2) Right after transfer deadline, very easy to get in any new signings that take the fancy
      3) RvP

Normally plan mine around the international breaks. And then the deciding factor is if there are enough big individual scores that week (e.g Dzeko's 4 goals against Spurs). So going for GW7, but might do GW3

No chance of United winning the league, will probably end up 3rd, or even 4th if we sign Suarez

I just can't write him off that easily, especially if Rooney leaves. If I'm Moyes, there's no way in hell I'm structuring my attack around Valencia, Nani so long has he's got one foot out the door, or even Ashley Young. I can see Zaha finding a spot in the team, even if I he does play less than 60 minutes more often than not.

And I wouldn't be adding him until I rid myself of some Chelski DGW participants, by which time Utd's fixtures start to improve.

  6. Is Coutinho really worth it?
    Sangfroid

The curious case of Phillipe Coutinho

So, the FPL prices were released and one of the most hotly anticipated prices was that of Phillipe Coutinho, Liverpool's 21 year old creative midfielder. After a very impressive few months since signing for Liverpool, people have been both excited by him as a player and as an FPL prospect.
When we all discovered he was going to cost us 9m, a lot of us were a little shocked...not to mention a bit shaken.

If we look at similar players in Coutinho's price range you have:

Michu - 18 goals last season. Proven goalscorer and last season's surprise package.
Gerrard - 10 goals and 12 assists last season. A proven PL performer who also has penalties in his locker.
Silva - Despite an underwhelming season last season, the creative Spaniard is still highly rated and his involvement means his price is still of an elite nature.

So FPL have decided to take no risks, they see Coutinho's potential and have evaluated him as equal to these guys in 'potential'. That's a hell of a call. These guys are experienced FPL performers comparatively.

So let's assess the situation a bit more. Why is Coutinho worth 9m according to FPL? And furthermore, why is he worth 9m to more than 20% of FPL managers currently?

    Well here are the facts:

Coutinho has made 13 appearances for Liverpool so far scoring 3 goals and 5 assists (7 FPL assists) in the process. He made his debut as a late sub in a 2-0 loss against WBA.

His second game went very well. He scored his first goal in a 5-0 romp against Swansea. It must be noted however that this was an understrength Swansea team on the verge of a LC final.

His next game, he was once again impressive. He got 2 assists as Liverpool went on to hammer Wigan 4-0.

His next game he was taken off early against Spurs.
The following game he scored again with a rebound but Liverpool went onto lose against Soton 3-1.

He then continued his fine start with an assist against Villa.

Blanks followed against Chelsea, Reading and West Ham. Liverpool began to struggle to score goals.

Then came the 6-0 demolition of Newcastle, Coutinho was heavily involved again, yet came away with only a single assist to show for it.

Another 0-0 followed against Everton. But Coutinho was able to help Sturridge on his way to a hat-trick against Fulham. The final day of the season saw Coutinho complete his 13th game and score the winner against already relegated QPR.

Ok, so Coutinho looks like an exciting prospect and had a fantastic start to his Liverpool career. But this is 13 games we are talking about. And in those games, Coutinho mainly performed against weaker opposition (Swansea's depleted team, Wigan's shambolic defence, QPR's already relegated deflated side)

Is this guy really worth 9m already after that? Gerrard has consistently performed over a decade, Silva has been doing what Coutinho has been doing for a longer time and is more experienced. Michu is a proven goalscorer who has pedigree. Can Coutinho match these guys going by this brief, albeit bright start to his career in England?

That remains to be seen. I, for one, will remain skeptical until he shows he's worth my money over other proven 'elite' attackers.

And when you consider that Sturridge is the same price, who are you going to trust more for goals? And let's say Suarez is back GW6. Do you even want a 9m Liverpool midfielder?

You make an excellent case against him. His returns were a bit of a mixed bag, and in general that's how I view Liverpool collectively; you never quite know what to expect. If Coutinho proves to be worth 9.0m this season then that is some excellent foresight on FPL's part, but I can't see it myself.

yeah his exploits so far have come pretty much in liverpool romps against relegation fodder or pre-season games against teams weaker than relegation fodder.

i think it's a bit off to think he's a banker based on those 13 games and pre-season, the other side of that though i think you can't write him off, he's surely only going to improve with age/experience and if he does turn out to be a flat-track bully that can be a very useful FPL trait (predictable returns)

They have a good run to start you off. I think this [that 'pool and he do well vs weaker sides] is a good argument FOR his inclusion rather than against it.

I don't have him, but I would take him over Gerrard or Michu until Michu's fixtures turn for the better.

Pre-season he has started where he left off. Swansea have tough opening fixtures so I am leaving Michu alone, but am getting Silva from the get-go.

And Sturridge is overrated, inconsistent and injury-prone. Coutinho all the way.

Good little summation there - maybe we are all getting carried away - but he looks like a excellent talent - however on reflection I suppose it depends on whether Gerrard plays deep like the last couple of seasons (which gives licence to players like Coutinho to go forward more) or further forward - also is Gerrard 100%???

Personally Gerrard is the safer option if fit - Regards to Sturidge - not sure he's fit Aspas - may start the first game for a cheeky punt!

Then again, if Suarez doesn't leave Sturridge and Coutinho may end up playing in the same position - both off Suarez. Then who do you choose a 9.0 Mid playing as left wing attacker or a 9.0 Attacker playing as right wingattacker?

before i give my opinion, great article. thanks for posting.

I do not have Coutinho in my team.
Silva has the edge, for me, and Aspas will probably stay in my side to cover Liverpool's attacking potential until Suarez returns. That said, I reckon Couinho IS a good option at 9m to start the season.

        on the figures.
3 appearances for Liverpool so far scoring 3 goals and 5 assists (7 FPL assists) in the process.
        - One of those 13 appearances, his first, was as a late sub.
+ 12 games (he'll be a key figure most of the season), in his debut season in the PL.
        + 3 goals
        + 7 FPL assists.

If the PL provides 38 opportunities to play, Coutinho made less than a third of the season.
so if we crudely multiply his stats by 2.5 to account for some missed games over a full season, we get, approx.
        30 Games
        8 Goals
        19 Assists

Add to that, the fact he plays in a side whose style is suited to the new BPS, while his role is one which will benefit from the shift too (eg Cazorla, a tidy passer in the attacking third).

Now we are looking at a 9m player.

Personally, i think the guys at FPL have got his price spot on.
I saw that assist vs villa at Villa Park. He was outstanding and the pass was quite exquisite.

And yes, many of the games in which he performed well were against weaker opposition.
THIS IS A GOOD SIGN. Liverpool have a run of these fixtures to start them off!

        Now here's food for thought...
Coutinho will have a nice little opening 6. Michu has a nice little run from GW 6-10.
If one were to start with Coutinho, who is likely to be successful in the opening weeks, thus price rise, and transfer to Michu (who may drop as a result of people swapping for Phillipe) for his nice little run, you might just be a few quid better off AND have the pick of the 9m midfield for the first half of the season.

But the main point was that the goals/assists he got last season was against easy opponents. He wasn't so successful against top 8 sides.

Hmmm, I see what you are saying and thank you for replying. You make a good argument too FOR him. And believe me, I've no doubt the boy has the ability to get some massive attacking returns. But my problem is that I actually don't believe Liverpool have that rosy a start to the season. Stoke Villa and Man Utd. They only beat one of these teams ONCE last season. They lost to Stoke and drew at home. And even lost to Villa at home. And Man utd speaks for itself.

I'm sure he could be a 9m midfielder but what puts me off is his youth, the fact he may not always 90 minutes and the fact that other guys in his price range are a bit more proven. For all we know Coutinho might have flaws we've yet to see. I don't mean that he is not as good as he looks but more as an FPL asset. He looks like he could be a major asset but I think we still need more time and stats to really assess his worth. So I'm not doubting he could become a 9m mid, I'm just skeptical whether he is for me worth that money over all the other options to start the season. And is he even the right guy to have from Liverpool! 🙂

I do though think that Coutinho will drop in price inevitably as he has high ownership and if he isn't ultra consistent I can see a fair few selling for the likes of Michu sooner rather than later.

He is an interesting FPL player. Incredible potential but we've only had him for a snapshot of his early career.

The problem the FPL guys faced in pricing him is this:

If Coutinho were 8m or less, he'd be in nearly every dream team.
At 8.5m hes going to be in most.
At 9m he still made the template, so a very popular choice, even for the more astute FPL managers.
At 9.5m he wouldn't get a look in vs Hazard or Walcott.

I think they nailed his price tag.

But as i said, I'm going for Silva and i'll use Aspas as my route to Liverpool's frontline until players settle and i find out who is essential.

Very interesting take on things. I am really glad this post got highlighted so I could return and read these views on Coutinho, most of all I wanted to hear what others thought.

And I think you are absolutely spot on here. They have priced him so that it is tricky to decide what to make of him.

But for me, while FPL have been clever, I don't think I'll fall so easily for this trap. What they have done essentially is make Coutinho an elite midfielder on the back of those 13 games. Maybe they are right and he is an elite midfielder now. But maybe they are also fooling people into thinking he matches the likes of Michu over a season. Maybe he doesn't and maybe Michu is the pick once again. After all, 9m is a lot for one player, you want to get it right and you want that player to be reliable. I feel confident with Walcott and Hazard for instance. Coutinho @ 9m makes me nervous. If he was 7.5-8.5m like you say. Maybe then you could feel ok about 'giving him some time'

But at that price you have HUGE expectations. And that is why I'm trying to separate the hype from the facts.

Surely in general players would perform much better against worse opponents (more likely to score a few goals an therefore more points to go around) to me coutinho is only an option till suarez comes back, will more than likely play central until then but it seems like they plan on playing sturridge up top with Suarez just behind. Gerrard offers better long term potential IMO, If he stays fit he pretty much guanentees you 10 goals and 10 assists along with benefitting massively from the new bonus system. If he does get injured then easy enough to get coutinho.

This is a great article and thats coming from a Liverpool fan with Coutinho in my team. I think many of us had an eye on him and I for one was really hoping that he would slip under the radar and come it at just 8.0m but on reflection I think that 8.5m would have been a fair price......but having said that I expected the likes of Silva, Walcott and Hazard to all come it at an extra 0.5m more than they have and so now the competition is insanely fierce at that sub 10m level.

I think that much of his current ownership relates to his storming pre-season, Sturridge's potential injury and of course Suarez's ban and transfer speculation. But in my opinion he will have a great season and start to get even more FPL rewards from those great performances that he will take over a lot of Stevie G's set piece responsibilities as the season progresses.

          great post.

          Silva/Michu > Coutinho.

I think he should be 8.5, on a par with where Kagawa should be (who is good value at 8)

Arsenal have invested in a stadium and locked themselves into long term deals to fund it, which are now expiring.

Wenger has done a tremendous job maintaining CL on a budget comparable with Wigans. Compare that to City/Sp*rs/Iverpool/Chelsea who have all spent heavily (to be fair to Sp*rs they have also sold big and spent quite wisely) and often finished below Arsenal. Wengers strength is consistency. Consistency bread stability and now Arsenal have a platform to kick on.

Arsneal are the 4th richest club in the world (Forbes). They have no reliance on the whims of a sugar daddy. Both Spu*s and Arsenal have an £80m warchest to spend this summer. What is the difference between the clubs?

Sp*rs warchest is a rather fortuitous one-off windfall from the sale of an exceptional player.
Arsenals warchest is generated via the stadium and they have £50-£80m to spend not just once, but every year!

Arsenals strategy is to play the long game, and every club in the league envies their current position, with the exception of ManUtd.

            Hart (Davies)

            Toure, Mert, Clyne, (Collins, Baker)

            Lampard, Mirallas, Walcott, Hazard, (Thomas)

            Aguero, Giroud, Lambert

Will get Soldado in once his price is released, probably by getting Negredo in for Aguero, and upgrading Lambert.

They have the makings of a decent side there, just need a creative CM and a striker

              Bent and Taarabt anyone?

Think Bent would be bad for them, as it means Berbatov drops. I think Fulham fans prefer him up top, where he's finishing the moves off. Thing is he rarely gets injured, so you don't massively need a back up for him. Just stick him upfront, and give him decent support in central midfield/wide areas and watch the goals flow. The taarabt bid is odd, maybe he'd be competition for Ruiz and another player who can play wide. Don't think he'll improve the side though.

I agree on Bent, plus it lessens Berba's FPL appeal, but Jol has stated that Berba is carrying too much of the goalscoring load.

The central midfield is still lacking. Boateng is an improvement on what they had but Sidwell, is..well, Sidwell. You may scoff but if he has no future at United someone like Anderson could actually be good fit for Fulham

Looks like a first choice XI
Glad to see he's playing a proper striker ahead of Berbatov - I thought ha his partnership with Ruiz didn't really work well for Fulham consistently. Good for them both fantasy-wise but it contributed to an underwhelming season for Fulham IMHO

Its the RVP debate again, I still cant justify the money

Its the captain arguement that others are using to justify having him in their teams.
But for me 14m is just way too much - he needs a season of 300 to justify that in my opinion, will that happen?

The way I look at it is that every week RVP fails, those that have him immediately double fail cos when he's their captain (whic he will be a lot of the time). And if the crap they're hiding in their team as a consequence of paying for him also fails thats a treble fail.

If you spend 9 odd mill on Soldado/Giroud instead (for example) and he fails than you still have the hope that your captain wont fail (when its not Soldado) and you also have the likelihood of more points from elsewhere in your team due to the extra 5m of quality in it.

Of course RVP can hit a hattrick some week but its just too much to risk if someone like Giroud, Soldado or Kone perform similar to Suarez last season.

In short I see big sales of RVP when he doesn't deliver cos people will see that they're missing out on points in too many other places....

The real issue is that, bar the City game, post-GW3 United have a nice run of fixtures. Going RvPless for them means you are hoping that someone else (Rooney, Kagawa) shows something that makes them worth owning, otherwise you run the risk of going without the most lethal striker in the PL for a nice run of games, the result being you get left behind in a big way

this is a good counter argument. At the moment I'm still thinking Kagawa for those fixtures along with the 5/6m spent elsewhere will see me in good stead.
Fulham, Swansea, Arsenal, Sot, Liverpool, Swansea have a good run then too...
I guess we shall see 🙂

I just won't enjoy watching United if I don't have him
But can justify on the basis that's there's only him, Bony and Soldado among top half clubs that are nailed on start up top in each of the first 5 matches. They're both new to the league and Bony has tough fixtures

Sturridge back in training muddies the waters , we suddenly have some good looking nailed on strikers to choose from in that price bracket

            Soldado
            Sturridge
            Benteke
            Giroud
            Rooney (if Chelsea)

Garvan is a 5.0 Palace mid.

Would be playing 3-4-3 and rotating Garvan and Koren.

Playing 3-4-3? I think that's the formation I'll play. I like it, just having RVP means you have to field a lower point scoring 4th mid, for me that's probably going to be Kim.

why not swap Giroud and Silva for Walcott and Dzeko, saves you 0.5 which you maybe use to swap Brown or one of the 5.0 mids?

If I have say 3 Arsenal players in terms of Giroud, Walcott, and Kosh.
And I also have 3 Chelsea players say Hazard, Terry and Oscar.
By having both Suarez and Rooney confirmed in my team at this very moment would mean I'd end up with 4 Chelsea and 4 Arsenal if the following were to transfer from there opposing clubs? or would the game force me to swap them out due to the fact the game has yet to start?

How long until we are likely to know the price for Soldado? I'm bored and avoiding work so FPL and FFS time 🙂

                GJ or Agger?
normally it would be GJ but will the new BAPS affect things?

a lot are getting mignolet solo, thinking an extra 0.5 to get GJ instead could be worth it as he will be played every game for me decent attacking threat

evening lads first time poster would appreciate some feedback on my team..

                Krul Mannone

                Coleman Toure Collins (Shaw Jenkinson)

                Hazard Silva Noble Oscar (Sissoko)

                Aspas Dzeko Lukaku

6mil in the bank for Rvp undecided when that move will be made although lukaku is out week 2 regardless...

                  Welcome....

GW 3 vs CP probably best time to being RVP in?

                  G 7.5/10 - check Krul injury
                  D 7.5/10 - check Jenks gametime
                  M 7.5/10 - Maybe not Sissoko
                  F 8.5/10

7.5/10 overall from me.......maybe invest a bit more in the squad and less in the bank?

If Sissoko gets played where he did when he came he is a great pick, but atm he is getting put so far back he will be looking up Krul's arse soon
