The Burning Question – Who Will Be Arsenal’s Main Man This Season?

Next up in our series of Burning Questions, we take a look at what’s on offer at the Emirates. Arsenal’s first season without Robin Van Persie started tentatively but as the raft of summer signings started to gel and develop an understanding, the Gunners finished the campaign superbly, with eight wins and two draws in their final 10 fixtures.

The only side in the league to feature four players with 10 or more goals in 2012/13 (Theo Walcott, Santi Cazorla, Olivier Giroud and Lukas Podolski), Arsene Wenger’s side were also impressive at the back and conceded just 37 times – the second most resilient backline in the top-flight. With strong options available right throughout the first XI, our site contributors have plenty to mull over…

Tinkerman says…
I think it’s going to be pretty hard to look past Theo Walcott. The fact that he scored only 11 points less than Santi Cazorla last season despite playing over 1,000 fewer minutes suggests he has the potential to outshine all of his team-mates on the Fantasy front, if, as widely expected, he is handed an increased amount of game time.

Many forward thinking managers have been quick to point to Cazorla’s superior cumulative score under the new Bonus Points System (BPS) in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, but I personally don’t think this will play a huge role in deciding who produces the most Fantasy points, since Walcott’s superior rate of goals and assists per game should see him outscore the Spaniard.

Others will also point towards Olivier Giroud benefitting from the lack of a new signing in the striking department but, despite the glut of chances he had last season, the Frenchman has yet to prove he has the class to start scoring more regularly for Arsenal. Also, a likely new signing in this area would surely hurt Giroud’s game time enough to make him unworthy of consideration.

In Tommy We Trust says…
Oliver Giroud. The mercurial Frenchman had a somewhat up and down debut season with several double digit Gameweek performances as well as some that drove Fantasy managers wild with frustration. His stats were very handy, though, and far better than the output in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game – for example, his “Chances per Minute” pace was quicker than the benchmark that is Robin Van Persie over the whole season.

So what needs to change for Giroud to become the Fantasy Football monster, hoovering up points like a Dyson? One reason could be his confidence level; something the Arsenal front man has said affects his game. Well if he isn’t confident after his pre-season performances (seven goals so far), then he requires some counselling.

Giroud’s all-round game is another reason why I believe he can be a force. He has an accomplished first touch, good movement and is good in the air – all traits required to be successful in the Premier League. There is also Arsene Wenger to consider in this argument. One of the Arsenal’s manager’s best traits is the ability to improve a player by weaving his magic over a seemingly average prospect with slight changes to the player’s game. For Giroud, this is getting him to play further up the pitch and refrain from dropping deeper to link up play. For the members among us, run a comparison between his first 19 games and the subsequent 19 – it will highlight a lot of interesting stats but his average position map is the one that interests me the most.

Lastly, the Premier League is full of foreign stars that produce in their second season and beyond. I am predicting Giroud will the next in this long list.

Applebonkers says…..
As it stands, it’s the duo I call “the Bayern bookends” – that’s the two guys who scored in Arsenal’s win in the Allianz Arena last season, Laurent Koscielny and Olivier Giroud. Koscielny is vital to fuse together the Gunners clean sheet potential; he covers for Per Mertesacker’s flaws whilst Vermaelen would too often expose them.

At the other end, Giroud did have a reputation as a bit of a Gallic galoot at times last season but he has the potential to bring Theo Walcott, Lukas Podolski, Santi Cazorla and Jack Wilshere into the game more than other strikers (including previous target Gonzalo Higuain) can. It’s also worth noting Giroud has exactly the same first full campaign as Luis Suarez did (according to Opta, at least), with 11 goals and three assists accrued. An FPL price of 8.5 for the centre-forward in a high-scoring team with a history of second-season blossoming? Serious potential.

Mark says…
I’ll happily pin my colours to the mast: Walcott is in every one of my Fantasy game squads right now. For me, he’s that “essential”. Arsenal have been handed a “kind” opening to the season and Walcott is a player who is, potentially, still “on the rise”.

His progress last season in terms of goalscoring was there for all to see and I’ll give you a stat for free – Walcott was involved (scored or assisted) in 44% of Arsenal’s goals last term (when on the pitch), compared to 27.6% in 2011/12. That demonstrates both his progress and his importance to the Arsenal cause. Arsene Wenger’s side won’t face a top six side away from the Emirates until Gameweek 11 and, before that, encounter just Spurs and Liverpool at home. I’m anticipating a strong start, a good few goals and profit from Walcott.

Do I look to double up? Perhaps. There’s no doubt that Santi Carzorla is the other quality acquisition. In the Sun Dream Team and Sky Sports, I’m certainly considering swooping for the pair – encouraged by the Spaniard’s propensity to pick up supplementary points (Man of the Match and Star Man). In the Fantasy Premier League, I’m far more cautious. Budget restrictions are pointing me elsewhere, perhaps even to Olivier Girioud.

If you put any stock in pre-season form, Giroud is a hot ticket. Much maligned in his first season, Giroud did not hide. He was well fed, had plenty of efforts on goal and was a “presence” when on the pitch. While he failed to translate that to strong returns, I’ve little doubt that we’ll see an improvement this season if he is given a platform to perform. Based on his summer, Grioud could start the season leading an Arsenal attack and fed by Walcott and Cazorla; that’s enough for me to take his claims for a place in my attack seriously.

As for the defence – again, there was improvement on show here: the Gunners ended the season conceding just five goals in their last eight Gameweeks with Laurent Koscielny, in particular, outstanding. It’s going to take 5.5 in the FPL to draft in a secure members of Wenger’s defence but, given their schedule, once again it’s a route I have to consider. With question marks over starters and rotation in the United and City defence, the Gunners looks a sound investment for those happy to spend on a defender or two.

    Maximizing Gw1 + WC

Hey guys so this DGW is making it hard for owners to lock in a team. Personally I will be going to use an early WC and maximize my potential points in GW1 for 3 reasons.

    1. To get a good start. You never want to be playing catch up, especially when there is such an obvious opportunity at hand.

    2. Last season my league saw a late entry where a manager only started playing in GW2. We all know how easy it is to make decisions in hindsight and that's a luxury he had. He knew who did well, he could see who was being transferred in and thus chose accordingly. The end result was a well balanced and on form team + bankroll from the transfers in. I believe using the WC in GW2 allows for us to use a similar strategy.

    3. The RvP and Bale situation.. Who knows whats going to happen. If you haven't selected either in the preseason then you will have to break apart your team just to get them in.

So in conclusion, why not maximize points in gw1 with 3 x Chelsea and 1 (maybe 2) Villa then WC GW2? I think this is the only obvious solution with minimal risk. What better time will you have to use your WC ?

Let me know what you guys think 🙂

Probably what I'll be doing myself. I do think however, the longer you wait to wildcard before the transfer window shuts the better. There could still be some big moves happening which could require a lot of re shifting players in our squads

What about Bale. If you have him and he goes then you will probably have the cash spare to make 2-3 improvement transfers. And if he stays and you don't have him then again, a lot of potential reshuffling. I just can't see Rooney to Chelsea happening. A move like this would have happened 4-5 weeks ago if it was going to happen. United wont let him go with no time and no quality available players out there to replace him

Bale will not play GW1 anyway so I wouldn't think he would be sitting on owners benches with a DGW. If he does stay and you do want bale why not plan to get him with the WC?

Im a Chelsea fan and honestly I don't see us getting Rooney for the same reason we didn't get Cavani.. We don't want to pay the asking price,.

It works to a certain extent imo. We get to see RvPs form and how Man U plans to use him. Even though its an extremly small sample size I think if RvP flops GW1 then people will drop him which also drops his price. So potentially you have the option of maybe even grabbing him at a bargain price of 13.8 or 13.9 in GW2

As a side note the guy who won the league last year used this same strategy (Gw2 wc after a Chelsea DGW) and the fixtures this year seem even tastier for Chelsea.

Most of us play the fixtures, and I'm defo in the fixtures over form camp.
But let's face it, GW1 brings way too many surprises. I think it makes sense to play the fixtures from GW2 or 3 and set up ones team from then.
Looking at the ticker, this gives a totally new picture. Newcastle, South and Hull seem to have extremely good fix. While Everton, WBA and Che have awful ones.

Life is all about perspective, but surely there is a case to do Barfa over Mirallas, JRod over Elk (makes sense in any case....), get a Hull def and maybe just go with 2 Chelsea DGWs (hello Benteke)?

Looking back to the Scout article on Aspas' signing, "A cost of around 8.5 to 9.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) seems likely..."

7m must be a bit of a bargain then.

Generally it's 20 pts per million over the season at the attacking end, so you'd expect 40 pts less than Sturridge if he is keeping on value against him which is pretty much where the predictions have him.

So essentially Aspas = Sturridge minus the odd (C) selection.

Everton were a 5 in midfield in any case, whereas Liverpool have the 2 support strikers much closer to the central striker.

Compare Sturridge and Coutinho's average position over the last 6 GWs.
Not a lot in it, the 'winger' in the system is asked to interchange position.
So we need to ask ourselves what is Aspas' natural tendency on the pitch.
Since he was playing as a striker I'd presume it is not as a touch line hugging winger, but a player who will come inside into those central areas to link with Sturridge.

Don't get me wrong, I'd love Sturridge but I can't fit him in. So will Aspas produce the same rate of returns in terms of the VORP? The indications seems to show that he will, so he is a valid pick.

Yeah I'd agree he is a punt. We know how Coutinho plays with Sturridge because of last season. Overall I just think its wiser to limit your punts for GW1 and concentrate on accuracy.

Bang on Ryan. He's my only punt, and I've saved 0.5m so I can go to a Berb or Lambert if necessary.

    Morning guys.

How's this looking? I've a plan to get RVP by GW4, without taking any hits, and without wildcarding. Here it goes..

    Mignolet / Lewis

    Terry / Mertesacker / Clyne / Turner / Chester

Walcott / Hazard / Ben Arfa / Mirallas / Kim

    Soldado / Negredo / Lukaku

    0.5 in the bank

The plan is to downgrade Lukaku to Anelka and Terry to Newcastle CB (4.5) after the DGW. This gives me the exact amount to upgrade on of Soldado/Negredo to RVP.

I know the plan is a bit price sensitive, and it bounds me to skip bandwagons that will occur, but yeah, for a start, I do have this plan. Thoughts?

Good plan. What happens if both Negs and Soldado banging in the goals along with RVP? Maybe downgrade Terry to someone like Collins.

I had Collins in my team, but WHU fans seem to think that he won't be a sure starter. And Newcastle have really good fixtures after GW1, and we'd be able to know which CB starts (Saylor or Yanga).

Have you confined those 4 defenders rotate strongly enough.

I have looked into that, they rotate well, the Newcastle defender who will be coming in, is going to rotate with Chester GW3 onwards. While Turner and Clyne are doing good too.

I think your current frontline will score more than rvp soldado/negredo anelka. So no need for change! Maybe start with benteke initially?

Well, Soldado and Negredo are new, so I can't be sure about them, but yes, they can pick up more than RVP, but hey, its good to have a backup plan.

Agreed. Plan B always handy. But soldado and rvp are most likely to score half the goals for their clubs. So negredo should go imo.

I did think about this, just want to play it all a bit safe. Here's the reasoning.

With Benteke, I'll have 4 DGWers, and if at all, there's an injury/suspension, this could still be salvaged with Negredo in, as I wouldn't be having a player who'll be blanking GW3, and Negredo has very good fixtures as you know. I am not a fan of going in with Benteke, though I know he might score a lot. Strong believer of playing the fixtures in the beginning when we don't have much information.

Campana - decent punt. However wonder about how many minutes he would play per game...

Def and attack good. Maybe missing one big hitter in midfield - maybe Mirallas if can fit him in.

I was a bit MIA yesterday. I saw that Zaha started the Community Shield. What are the chances of him starting the first fixture in the PL? I reckon he'll definitely creep in at some stage and has tough opening fixtures but I would like to get in on him before the bandwagon starts driving his price up.

    I wish iwould stop tinkering!

    Was set on-

    A-
    Boruc/ Mannone
    A Cole/ Collins, Chester/ Parr/ Toure
    Hazard/ Coutinio/ Nolan/ Snod/ Kim
    RVP/ Giroud/ Lambert

Cole to Mert and Giroud to Soldado later

    Now by tinkering
    B-
    Boruc/ Mannone
    A Cole/ Collins, Chester/ Parr/ Toure
    Hazard/ Coutinio/ WALCOTT/ Snod/ 4.5
    RVP/ Giroud/ ANELKA

    So
    A- Lambert, Nolan, Kim
    B- Anelka, Walcott, 4.5

    Hi guys,

I was just thinking through my forward line... I know Dzeko and Lukaku have a potential to be explosive but then they are both rotation risks and if I were to choose someone else to be upfront over them I would pick rickie lamberts as he is nailed on for spot kicks and direct free kicks... and he's such a good goal scorer as well.. A case in point was two seasons ago Anthony Pilkinton... I had aguero, suarez and ba as my forwards.. and suarez was getting the odd assist every other week and was at 9.0m and pilks was at 5.5m and I was constantly seeing pilks scoring as much as suarez was and hence I went frack it Pilks it is and that worked wonders... I managed to draft RVP which was a crazy 12.0m in at that time in and finished top of my league...

My policy is why pay so much for someone if you can get the same output at a lesser price (unless he is steven gerard lol which I would pick any day of the week)... It is possible that Negredo/Jovetic may match RVP's output..
