The Burning Question – Is Lukaku A Risk Worth Taking?

Next up in our series of Burning Question articles, we cast an eye over Chelsea’s in-form Belgian forward ahead of double Gameweek 1. Home games against Hull and Villa have Romelu Lukaku firmly on Fantasy radars – currently the third most popular frontline option in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, with over 22% ownership, plenty are willing to take a punt as they look to get quickly out the blocks.

With both Demba Ba and Fernando Torres vying for a starting berth as Jose Mourinho’s lone striker, the issue of minutes over the pair of matches is something of a concern, bearing in mind there’s a trip to Old Trafford the following Sunday. Having racked up five goals and two assists over just 256 minutes this summer, though, Lukaku’s form gives our contributors plenty to consider.

Evs says….
Quite simply, I would say yes. I am not convinced Jose Mourinho is thrilled by a poacher such as Demab Ba, and will he really turn to a second-gear Fernando Torres? I’m not having it.

Unless a move for Wayne Rooney is fast-tracked, I see Lukaku as the only real option up front for Mourinho; he can hold the ball up, bring in Chelsea’s weapons in midfield and has the ability to turn and run at opponents. The comparison with Didier Drogba is lazy but it’s also a good fit.

Lukaku’s numbers speak for themselves: 31 goals in two seasons at Anderlecht (he scored 131 goals in 93 games at youth level) plus last season at the Hawthorns he netted 17 times in 35 games – again, a ratio of a goal every other game. In his year-long spell at the Baggies, the Belgian netted six times in 15 substitute appearances including a hat-trick against United, so no worries there.

I suspect he’ll start at least one of the two matches in Gameweek 1 but, even if he doesn’t feature in the first XI in both, I will settle for 20 minutes off the bench in either – he’s explosive enough to make the difference with limited pitch-time.

Tinkerman says….
No doubt Fantasy managers will be looking at the two very favourable fixtures in the first Gameweek and anticipating a slew of goals from Chelsea. Lukaku seems to have been handed his fair share of pre-season minutes and has responded well with goals, assists and some lively performances. Jose Mourinho will surely be mindful of the fact that the Belgian outscored both Fernando Torres and Demba Ba in the league last season, despite having played over 500 minutes less than either of his fellow-forwards.

Judging by Mourinho’s comments, however, rotation is a real worry and I suspect he will make full use of his squad over the double Gameweek, especially given the importance of the fixture at Old Trafford on Sunday week. This would likely see Lukaku playing significantly fewer than the 180 possible minutes over the two Gameweek 1 fixtures, with a real possibility of him starting on the bench in one of the matches against Hull and Villa.

Many will point out that he didn’t need much game time last term to rack up the goals. Regardless of this, we have to take into account the fact that starting with Lukaku leaves us facing an additional tough decision: we either bench him in Gameweek 3 (as well as having a dilemma the previous weekend when he plays against United) or use a precious transfer to swap him for another player after one or two Gameweeks. I personally think he has the potential to score well in the opening Gameweek, but I’d rather pay more attention to the prospects of alternatives who seem guaranteed to get close to 270 minutes over the first three Gameweeks and who don’t require us to factor in the use of a transfer.

Spencer says…
Looking at the Blues’ fixtures for the double Gameweek, I feel that a Chelsea forward is a must have. No disrespect to their opposition, but Hull are newly promoted and Lambert’s teams have never been the best defensively. So who are the contenders?

For all his recent gongs – the Golden Boot in Euro 2012 and this year’s Confederations Cup – Fernando Torres still fails to convince on the Premier League stage. As for Demba Ba, his 38 goals in just 80 appearances in the Premier League is impressive but I question whether he play as the lone striker role in Mourinho’s preferred formation.

That leaves Lukaku. While 17 goals in 43 appearances is less impressive than his two rivals, he is seemingly ready-made to fit Mourinho’s tactics. Big, strong, and powerful, the Belgian has all attributes that Mourinho likes in his forwards and, for me, that will see him get the minutes that will repay Fantasy investment.

Applebonkers says…
For the double Gameweek I really think so. While he seems unlikely to get 180 minutes, paying 8.0 for a striker who looks good to start at least one of the games looks a bargain – particularly if that game is against promoted Hull. As a guilty recipient of his 16 points off the bench in Gameweek 38 last season, we’ve also seen how he can impact matches without earning starts.

Beyond the double, Torres has the European experience (and goals last season) which Lukaku and Ba both lack – the Spaniard looks favourite to start the European Super Cup against Bayern Munich after Gameweek 2, adding more weight to Lukaku’s chances of going up against a United defence. We have to consider that Mourinho will have seen his hat-trick against the champions on the final day of 2012/13 and United’s rearguard will hardly relish an early re-union with Lukaku’s pace and power – as the most advanced central attacker, either in a 4-2-3-1 or 4-3-3, he could still thrive on limited game time. After that, I’d consider other options. Sell for Chelsea’s blank Gameweek 3 and monitor the rotation policy.

Mark Says…
To be honest, I’m still smarting from pinning Lukaku to my bench for his final day hat-trick. Despite that, I have to consider revisiting the Belgian from the off given the double Gameweek prospects. As I’ve stated in the previous “Burning Question”, I don’t see too many of Mourinho’s men given more than 100 minutes over their two Gameweek 1 home fixtures. Even so, Lukaku has the confidence and weaponry to inflict plenty of damage given those minutes, fed ammunition by the likes of Hazard, Mata and Oscar.

I just wonder if Mourinho will opt for Lukaku at Old Trafford on Sunday week, or whether he’ll go for the experience of Fernando Torres. True enough, Lukaku’s fateful hat-trick in Gameweek 38 proved his ability to dismantle the United rearguard but the prospects at Old Trafford a week into the season look very different to that final day showpiece. If he’s kept out of that cauldron, we could be looking at limited minutes over the first three Gameweeks. With the blank to follow, a price drop could loom and suddenly, Lukaku owners will feel pushed into a change or risk losing early cash.

Having said that, Lukaku will make it into at least one of my Fantasy lineups – probably Sky Sports. I’m undecided whether that will translate to my Fantasy Premier League squad, as yet. Much depends on whether I find a place for Hazard in midfield. As I’ve mentioned previously, Chelsea’s assets come with a health risk – a ticket to frustration. I’m unsure if I want to opt for a double helping.

Most would stack up on DGW who will get their game time and have a shot at points, Cech, Hazard, Benteke, then i would load up on high hitting midfielders that you have faith in Walcott, Coutinho maybe?

The WC would prove useful to ship the DGW's that did not do much or anything for you and fill in with players that did do well that weekend

If you are going to WC, watch ALL of the games. Get an idea for the players that who may be in the points later but did not bang in a goal or snag an assist and use the WC for them.

I myself would never WC this early, there's arguments for both sides but personally I prefer later

      Hope this helps !

    Think I've finally done it!

    Manonne (Boruc)

Garrido - toure - koschielny (Brayford, coleman)
    Hazard (c) - Oscar - snod - Coutinho (Koren)

    RVP - Anelka - Lukaku

    1 INB
Pending form will trade Oscar/Lukaku to Walcott/giroud. Rumours Walcott is injured and may miss first game is brilliant!!!!

  4. Three Template Teams Forming

Prepare yourself, Dead Zone. Wall of text incoming.

So, we have two camps forming: RVP and No RVP.

In all honesty, I'm in the No RVP camp at the moment. Yes, I was one of those who did state that he "only scored against a Championship side," but we all know that he's going to score against everyone. He's fixture proof and one that you're confident with giving the armband to.

With that, why am I still in the No RVP camp? It has to do with the team itself. If you spend 14.0 mil on RVP, how much are you going to spend on your other strikers? Are you going the 8.0-9.5 and 5.5 route? Or are you taking a hit elsewhere in your squad?

It's come to light that there are a few ways to go about the RVP template. I can't fault the attempts, and I'm not going to pass judgment. Really I just want to analyze the various options I see arising.

The "Go Hard or Go Home" Team:
    Foster (Boruc) (9.5 mil)
Toure - Collins - Brayford (Parr, Chester) (21.5 mil)
    Walcott - Hazard - Mirallas - Lallana - (Colback) (37.0 mil)
    RVP - Soldado – Lukaku (31.5)
0.5 in the bank for GW2 Lukaku > Giroud

The actual players on this are irrelevant, but the price ranges are more or less what I'm getting at. By keeping 3 big hitter forwards, you're going to be looking at ~32.0 million spent up top. Your midfield is going to still have a couple big hitters and some decent mid-range options (~38.0 mil). However, your back line (~21.0) and keepers (~9.0) are going to take the biggest hit. If you're more attack-minded, you might take the 1.0 from downgrading Foster and Toure into 4.5 options and invest it elsewhere, but you get my point.

By doing this, you're just hoping your defenders and goalkeepers play. Clean sheets will happen, but you're not banking on it. Obviously, you’ll be captaining RVP each week, unless a fixture for Hazard, Walcott, or maybe Soldado looks too good to pass up.

    The “RVP + Budget” Team:
    Foster (Boruc) (9.5 mil)
Toure - Collins - Brayford (Parr, Chester) (21.5 mil)
    Walcott - Hazard - Coutinho - Silva - (Colback) (41.5 mil)
    RVP - Anelka - Lukaku (27.5 mil)

Historically speaking, 3-4-3 scores the most points in FPL, so I’ll disregard the option of 3-5-2. With this formation, RVP now pretty much your only captaincy choice, save for someone who’s playing a DGW. Your backline is the same, but you can invest a bit more into your midfield. Yes, Anelka may not score as much as Soldado, but Coutinho and Silva should score more than Mirallas and Lallana (once again, these can be anyone. Just using the price range for comparison purposes).

    The “RVP-less” Team:
    Mignolet (Davis) (9.5 mil)
ACole - Collins - Toure (Chester, Parr) (24 mil)
Walcott - Hazard - Coutinho - Mirallas (Kim) (40.5 mil)
    Soldado - Giroud - Lukaku (26 mil)
Having 3 big hitters up front that are not RVP allow you to spread the wealth. Once again, you can downgrade defenders to upgrade midfielders, but you’ll want to get a good goalie with a 4.0 or 4.5 back up, or a budget rotating pair. You’ll be able to afford a couple mid-range defenders and then someone like Cole or Ivanovic. Your midfield will most likely have 3 9.0+ and a Mirallas-type. For GW1 you’ll more than likely pick Cole or Hazard for your captain, and you’ll see week to week from then on out.

Obviously, there are variations and I don’t need people telling me that there team is this or that. However, these are the 3 types that are starting to form. The biggest question you have to ask yourself is where you are comfortable as a fantasy player. How are you managing the armband?
    - Are you confident in giving the armband to RVP, no matter his form? There will be droughts and maybe an injury. Will you be strong enough to keep him in your team? Massive restructuring will be required if you decide to drop him and bring him in at a future date.
    - By investing in RVP, you’re accepting that your defenders will not get the clean sheets and attacking returns that other teams will get. Are you going to be fine knowing that’s okay?
    - By not investing in RVP, you will have to follow form and fixtures to pick who to give the armband to. Are you confident in your ability with that?
    - If you decide to start without RVP, it will take a WC or significant hits/many GWs to get him in. Are you okay with that? There may be a point where his returns are so great that you will need to get him in. Are you going to be able to make that decision?

I don't think that there is a better “team,” but I believe that there is a better strategy for who you are. Personally, I don’t like putting all my eggs in one Dutch basket. However, if he’s on fire it’s going to be hard for me to ignore that. I believe that I can find the players that can score fantasy points for their team on a consistent basis. With that, by finding different captains each week depending on form and fixtures, it may just pay off to have a team that is a little more balanced. Sure, if you get the armband wrong, you may be out 20 points, but if RVP blanks the same is true.

What do yall think? Which camp are you in and why?

If you drop RVP you can divide it up into two better strikers easily.

However, wouldn't you want to spend .5 to upgrade a defender or 1.5 to turn Mirallas into Coutinho for example?

I'm not saying it isn't easy to make a quick fix, but personally I would look to upgrade all of my team.
And you can't tell me that after spending 14 million on RVP you're going to have an easy time not giving him the armband if he's coming off a blank. "Yeah he's fixture proof but he didn't score last week and Soldado did."

I have been trying to get the rvp budget team BUT your team is over a 100m unfortunately plus the fact that:
      - i dont think anelka will start once vydra comes and no other striker upto 5.5m
      - 4.5m mids are hard to find who will have guaranteed gametime. spending 5m opens lots more options

due to this, i am going for the go hard go home strategy.

It's actually not that hard to go from RVP-less to RVP+ in the 1st 3 game weeks without using the WC or missing bandwagons. Just in time for ManU vs Crystal Palace.

Every1 will be dumping their Chelsea players, so it's just a matter of band-wagoning:

      Chelsea Defender -> 4.5 option
Hazard or Lukaku -> 7.0 or 5.5 option
      Soldado or Lukaku -> RVP

      So

      Mignolet (Davis) (9.5 mil)
ACole - Collins - Toure (Chester, Parr) (24 mil)
Walcott - Hazard - Coutinho - Mirallas (Kim) (40.5 mil)
      Soldado - Giroud - Lukaku (26 mil)

      Becomes :

      Mignolet (Davis) (9.5 mil)
*Clyne* - Collins - Toure (Chester, Parr) (24 mil)
Walcott - Hazard - Coutinho - Mirallas (Kim) (40.5 mil)

great post! and I agree with you on the RVP less approach (at least at the moment)

with restructuring the team you're only half considering it. yes if you don't have RVP you'll have to significantly restructure your team to get him in. but you're forgetting that if you do have RVP and get rid of him there will be a lot of restructuring your team to invest those extra funds back in. especially in areas such as defense or your 4th mid for example which are areas that people are often reluctant to upgrade, especially if it means a hit, meaning you could be left with a weaker squad for quite some time before those funds get spread back into your team

6 million in the bank is an awful lot, if i were you I would upgrade my mid and forget about RVP. That being said I can see where you are coming from especially with an early fixture against palace

I have asked this before but didn't get answers.
Do you think using a wildcard during the first international break is a good idea?

    Pros:
    + transfer window is closed
+ you can start without RVP and get him in without points hit
+ same with Bale if he stays
+ you may know the Man City attackers Pellegrini prefers
+ you can jump on early bandwagons and make profit

    Thoughts please.

Captain choices look really tough for gw2 and 3 / I always pick whoever is topping the poll , have no idea who it will be in week 2 , and week 3 shaping up to be a lottery .
I will be wildcarding after GW3 and Van Persie will be the first player picked , hopefully for less than 14 m

    1 Hazard (no brainer)
    2 tricky
    3 man c lottery
4 Van Persie or possibly benteke home newc or soldado home norwich , but has to be RVP i think

    Hi guys,

I got some pretty harsh comments about my team last time out so have gone for a complete revamp more balanced (but the three upfront kind of stink!)

    Would be interested to hear feedback;

    Boruc Speroni

Kosc Toure Zab (Brayford + Chester)

    Hazard Bale Walcott Coutinho Mirallas

    Anelka Berbs JRod

With Bale not playing GW1 (+ poss leaviung) was thinking of bringing in Chelsea players for DGW, but who?

    Gk:
@9.5m: boruc/foster is the best combo by far.
@9m (for us who want to have rvp): boruc/mannone or boruc/speroni are decent BUT
    - mannone is not nailed on (need opinion here) and u dont want to waste an FT on a gk
    - speroni is nailed on but can get cheaper coverage using parr/ward and wba is better team

conclusion: boruc/foster combo is great. Thoughts?

To have RVP basically means downgrading a defender, midfielder and striker. For instance:

        With RVP:

        Mannone
        Toure Turner Zab
        Mirallas Ramires Couti Hazard Nolan
        RVP Benteke

        Subs Gayle Brayford Chester Boruc

        Without RVP:

        Mannone
        Toure Vidic Zab
        Ramires Couti Hazard Walcott
        Dzeko Lukaku Benteke

        Subs Nolan Brayford Chester Boruc

i thought of that but having a non-playing keeper would bother me.

i would have like a 9m combo and keen on sunderland but mannone not being guaranteed is a big concern for me so will spend the extra 0.5 and will save it somewhere else.

WBA kept 8 CS last year.
South kept kept 7 CS last year.

Chances are you won't get the rotation right.

Get Mignolet + a 4m for the same price and play him every week.

      Liverpool kept 16 CS btw.

Mignolet is a better keeper then Reina anyway, so I can't see Liverpool getting less then 15 CS. They are a stronger team then last season.

Thats all well and good until an injury or something like that means you have no keeper for a week without a likely points hit

But fortune favours the brave and all that....

        the problem with this
        - lpool play villa away, then utd @home and swans away in gw2-4...they can get clean sheets but very decent chance that utd and swan will score.
        - having a non-playing keeper in the event of injuries (minimal chance though)

True of course. Most will just want to get to gw 3 and the first Int break to WC. As you say fortune favors the brave. I know of someone on here(that ended in the top 500 last year) that is going Boruc + a 4m non playing keeper.

I can see Boruc/Foster conceding in all 3 their opening fixtures considering they will face the likes off Lambert,Mirallas,Bony and Michu.

As a 3 week play Migs & a 4 mil is less of a risk indeed

Rotating GK is annoying as you end up losing out on those unexpected CS away from home and its frustrating.

    Latest draft:
    Cech Boruc
    Toure Mertesacker Coleman MTurner Chester
    Hazard Walcott Coutinho Mirallas 4.5
    Soldado Lukaku Dzeko

Of course this assumes Walcott is ok. Back on the Lukaku-wagon!

Not sure who the best 4.5 m/f is any more, with Thomas injured. I've seen Jedinak mentioned - know anything about him?

No, nothing. I've gone with Kim for the extra 0.5. Handy to have for cover.

Mid: Wal, Kim, Haz, Nolan, Coutinho.

          Gives me a front 3 of Gir/Luk/Soldado.

If I choose him along with Lukaku I may need to get rid of both after a few weeks though..

I've a good feeling about Giroud..

Coutinho is class and has moved to a central role. At 9m, it is essential that these slightly cheaper players come through this season.

          Yep-agreed on Gir.

Most of the cool kids on here are confident Luk will start - I'd chance your arm and play him.

Just been looking at Norwich team, and have a few questions:

    1. Is Olsson nailed to start left mid, and if so who's place is he taking?

    2. Lot of love for Snod, but Hoolihan is one million cheaper with similar gametime returns in the last 2 years. Is he nailed also?

    thanks

      Norwich fan here, mate.

      1) Olsson absolutely not nailed on at left mid. Only gotten one start there in pre-season and I don't see him playing there nearly enough to validate inclusion. He'll be in and out of the side, sometimes at LB and rarely at LM. Hughton loves Nathan Redmond, who will get some looks at LM, and Anthony Pilkington (currently with a minor injury) is the incumbent. If you want a Norwich defender, grab Michael Turner, who's nailed on and grabbed 3 goals in 23 apps last year.

      2) Hoolahan not nailed either. Especially not nearly enough to justify inclusion over Snod. Snod is a guaranteed starter and I think he'll score more than last year because I think Norwich as a whole will attack better, thus more assists and potentially more goals as well.

Thanks for the input. I suspected this to be the case with Olsson. It would be great if he played every game with the odd game at LM, but in reality he will probably fail to nail down a spot in either the midfield or the defence.

Exactly. Might start something like 25ish games, but no need to invest with other attractive 4.5 options... Norwich have enough cover at LM that there's almost no way he locks down LM, and Garrido is capable enough at the back to keep him out there as well. Tantalizing, but ultimately not worth taking

ok guys I think I got it now, but I think maybe my front line is lacking a little?

    Cech (Mannone)
Collins - Ivan - Mert (Parr - Brayford)
    Hazard (c) - Zaha - Mirallas - Wally (Thomas)
    Lambert - Anelka - RVP

    0mil in bank

        @ JAFALAD

I really don't rate Giroud, he fires too many blanks IMO but if he is going to go on a goalscoring fest this season I could be eating my words! And lukaku is he nailed on now? Other options other than Giroud?

@ LANLEY STAUREL Wanted pool in there but sturridge is so expensive, and coutinho would mean dropping either wally or hazard, yes it is difficult!

I am going to wait and see with the city coverage for now.

Gir looks to be a confidence player. He has the fixtures so worth a go.

Luk: see the burning question article yesterday-all the seriously cool kids on here think he will play. That's good enough for me. Again worth the gamble with the dgw.

Other options: Benteks, Jecko if you think he'll play (I don't), Soldado looks handy.

            Foster (Boruc)
Collins - Ivan - Mert (Parr - Brayford)
Hazard - Zaha - Mirallas - Wally (Kim)
            Lukaku - Anelka - RVP

0.5 in the bank, could do Lukaku > Giroud in GW2 depending if I have been convinced or not 😆
