The Burning Question – Is Dzeko’s Bandwagon More Boselli than Michu?

Pre-season friendlies can be a double-edged sword for Fantasy managers. A couple of good performances over the summer can lend their way to the most unlikely bandwagons as we seek out the in-form protagonists ahead of the campaign’s kick-off.

We’ve been here before. Even experienced Fantasy managers were fooled by former Wigan man Mauro Boselli – the Argentine produced the goods in back-to-back pre-seasons only to fall flat on his face when the real action ensued. On the other side of the coin, there’s someone like Michu, who racked up the goals for Swansea last summer and hit the ground running from Gameweek 1.

As we cast an eye over City’s summer results, Edin Dzeko’s four-goal exploits have turned a few heads. With home games against Newcastle and Hull, allied with a trip to Cardiff in the first three fixtures, Manuel Pellegrini’s side have an enticing opening schedule before the first international break comes along. Kindly priced across the Fantasy games, at just 7.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), Dzeko has been pencilled into many a squad as we brace ourselves for Saturday’s big kick-off. As the Bosnian’s bandwagon edges towards 12% ownership (more than any City midfielder or attacker) we turn to our contributors for some opinions.

Mark says…
Let’s look at the facts. Dzeko has started six of City’s seven pre-season matches, including last weekend’s defeat to Arsenal. Over that spell, he’s repaid the faith shown by Pellegrini by notching four goals. Unlike Roberto Mancini, the Chilean has rewarded Dzeko for his scoring rate with regular starts and has taken time to single the Bosnian out for praise. So, despite a wealth of attacking options, including a new £48m strike duo of Stevan Jovetic and Alvaro Negredo, we can surely expect Dzeko to get the nod when Newcastle visit the Etihad next weekend.

Now consider this. Dzeko was given just 16 league starts by Mancini. Despite this, he notched 14 goals and, significantly, whilst on the pitch, either scored or assisted 40% of City’s goals. In contrast, David Silva was involved in just 24%.

Hands up – I’m a Dzeko fan – while I acknowledge his sometimes awkward style, his propensity to switch off and go missing for lengthy spells, I’ve always been willing to back his instinct to find the net. Give Dzeko minutes and he’ll score goals. He proved it last season. He’s proved over the summer. He’ll likely remain a rotation risk all season long but if Pellegrini gives him starts in the first three Gameweeks, I think Dzeko could be a huge bandwagon going into the international break with the wildcards fluttering.

Disclaimer: I backed Boselli.

Applebonkers says…
Dzeko seems quite a simple formula. Dzeko + minutes = points. He’s never been pretty but he gets the job done with goals and, to a lesser extent, assists, which essentially is all that matters for us, if not fully for real life managers. With Aguero having fallen behind fitness and match sharpness and Silva being used more on the left than in the hole in pre-season it seems like just Dzeko, Negredo and Jovetic for two spots, in which case I think one spot is Dzeko’s to lose early doors.

Reverting back to the formula, 7.5 therefore looks like a tantalising price, especially given the costs of his attacking team-mates. Once Aguero is up to full speed it surely complicates matters more as I also believe Jovetic is the perfect flexible striker for Pellegrini.

I like Dzeko as an individual punt. I don’t, however, if one of several risks being taken. The Gameweek 3 absence of Chelsea and Villa assets means our squads will already be stretched, narrowing the margin for error. In a week where we’ll need our starters to be reliable and bench options to step up, Dzeko’s uncertainty of game time may well spell trouble.

Andy says…
I’ll be honest – all of the Edin Dzeko talk really confuses me. It’s not to say that I think he’ll be comparable to Mauro Boselli – I’d like it on record that I do think he’s a decent, competent striker – but it’s more that I’m somewhat agog that he seems to have been elevated to a status I don’t think he deserves.

I just don’t quite believe that he will be utilised as frequently as is mooted, and either the manager is simply trying to boost the morale one of his squad members or has got his words in a mix. When you’ve got Alvaro Negredo, Sergio Aguero and Stevan Jovetic in direct competition for places, I just don’t see Dzeko standing up to the challenge.

If I’m wrong and Manuel Pellegrini really is going to rely on the Bosnian to lead his attack then the 7.5 striker jumps out as a Fantasy option to be reckoned with. This Fantasy manager, however, is going to need to see the proof before he’s willing to sample the goal pudding.

Jonty says…
With 30 goals in 76 appearances for City and 66 in 111 appearances at his previous side VfL Wolfsburg, Dzeko is certainly more Michu than Boselli on paper. With Aguero and new boys Jovetic and Negredo vying for game time, plus an abundance of attacking talent in midfield, Dzeko looks set for another season of rotation.

Manuel Pellegrini has come out publicly in declaring Dzeko as his “main striker” but this statement may have been lost in translation. Did he really mean that Dzeko was his number one choice, or just praising his talents as centre forward to keep him on side? Those words are far more likely to keep Dzeko warm and happy when he sits on the bench than if Pellegrini had said the truth, ‘he’s a pretty good striker, but they are ten a penny at our club.’

In terms of minutes he is certainly likely to be more Boselli than the Swansea man: Michu is as “nailed on” as they come. But does the uncertainty of Dzeko’s starts matter all that much? He has already proved that as a sub he can still damage opposition defences. He started just 16 Premier League matches last season yet still managed a respectable 14 goals. It took Southampton’s Rickie Lambert 35 starts to get just one more than Dzeko last season. It’s worth noting that both are priced at 7.5 this time around.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

  5. Is Anelka worth it?
    DietCoke

This season, Anelka has provided fantasy managers with a dirt cheap attacking option that seems to promise some point returns. 17.3% of managers have selected the Frenchman, but is Anelka a good pick?

Consider this: why does the 3-4-3 formation seem favored over the 3-5-2? The answer is deeper than a simple matter of point returns. Rather, it's a matter of flexibility.

In a 3-5-2, the third striker slot is usually filled with bench fodder, a cheap striker who will never feature in our starting XI. This is to allow for maximum funds to reach our midfield, the area being capitalized on.

But where does that leave our forwards? With a 4.5 Luke Moore in our team, we find it difficult to upgrade him come time for the Soldado or Benteke bandwagon. We can't do a 1:1 swap and thus must pull funds out of our midfield before upgrading Moore in a two step, two transfer process.

We don't see that problem in a 3-4-3. Say my line-up is Soldado, Benteke, Lukaku. With this kind of value up front, it is very easy to transfer in and out the likes of Giroud, Negredo, and Sturridge in one easy transfer. With so much potential in strikers this year, we can't miss out.

Having Anelka in our team, we are essentially playing a 3-5-2 formation. His value is too low to upgrade 1:1, and thus you're committing at LEAST two transfers to get him out (and at the expense of value elsewhere!). And let's be honest, Anelka won't be featuring in the top ten strikers this year. We won't want to hold on to him.

This issue is amplified even more with the presence of RVP in our team as well. RVP's price tag inevitably weakens our midfield, meaning that there is even LESS value available to upgrade Anelka later on when we need to.

Just some words of caution. Investing in a cheap forward may come back to bite you.

No arguing that there is some talent in midfield. But you've got five slots for midfields and only three for strikers.

With so many options for strikers and not as many for midfield (Walcott/Santi, Hazard/Mata, Coutinho/Gerrard, Michu, and Silva pretty much cover it), you'll want that third striker slot.

        Just my thoughts.

Why not spend the extra 0.5 and get JRod? He's so much better...

Also, I prefer 3-4-3 with a servicable 5.0 5th mid (Kim, Koren, etc.) who is nailed on and can fill in here and there (see: Puncheon, Dyer, Sterling last year)....I think it's easier to manage transfers (credit to you who pointed out the transfer mechanics with 3-5-2)

I'm happy playing Anelka in a 3-4-3 to start the season. Just because he's cheap doesn't mean he won't score goals. Giggs Boson made a good point the other day that if he cost more then more people would get him. It's all psychological. People think that because he's cheap they can't play him in a 3-4-3.

I'm guessing the main reason why people are going for the 5.5m forward is because you could combine RVP, Anelka & one of your 8mills, and will cost the same (pretty much) as your 3 x 8/9mils.

RVP is the equivalent of having 2 solid forwards.

Let me start by saying that I don't currently have RVP however, one thing that we're failing to mention when comparing these sets of players it the 'Armband' factor.

RVP scored in excess of 9pts 12 times last year while Benteke only managing it 6.

The safety in doubling RVP's points could sway your decision...

I see your point about the importance of 'horizontal' transfers I truly do but, did you consider the reverse to be plausible as well?

That is, five mids get off to a flying start (i.e. Walcott, Hazard, Coutinho, Gerrard, Michu, Mirallas, Mata, Cazorla, Silva, Ben Arfa, Snodgrass, Bale, Nolan...) & having Anelka is the safer route because it'll enable us to better shift one of these players into our side...

Many strikers this year have their caveats:
      Dzeko- Rotation
      RVP- Price
      Sturridge- Fitness
Giroud- Well let's face it, he's still Giroud
      Aguero- Fitness
      Rooney- Fitness
      Negredo- Rotation
      Soldado- Proven?
      Lukaku- Rotation & Blank
      Bony- Fixtures
      Carroll- Injured
      Benteke- Fixtures & Blank
      Lambert- Price / Value vs.Rodriguez
      Aspas- Rotation
      Kone- Nailed on?
      Berbatov- Fixtures

Perhaps it's best to 'play it safe' with five stronger midfielders while we wait to see if / when three 'true' heavy hitting strikers appear...

        An interesting perspective.

The way I see it, you'd still need to invest a minimum of two transfers (first by downgrading your midfield, then upgrading Anelka) to hop on the emerging bandwagon.

If you have a solid three to start, you only need to 1:1. Quick, easy, painless. And who knows, maybe you got lucky and are already on the wagon!

Look, I agree Anelka does not come without risk, and there is the possibility that Clarke will shoot himself in the foot again this season, but if u ask me, Anelka's probably less of a rotation risk than the City & Chelsea strikers!

Yes but nobody is taking the Chelsea and City strikers seriously. They are only short term punts. I'm not sure a punt on a cheap striker is worth the transfer.

One of the most burning questions for me is should I leave some money in the bank for possible RvP trade or go with a strong defence. I think I have decided to start without him, but if he goes nuts early on then... Last season I had him almost whole season.

I'd say build a strong team to start, and if RVP is killing it, wildcard GW4 to bring him in.

It would be pretty unfortunate if you left all of these funds to bring him in and then he doesn't perform well or gets injured.

i don't get why people can't just empty their bank with a plan of downgrading their chelsea players to accommodate rvp gw4. makes more sense to me than leaving loads of funds free from the get go, as there's bound to be the odd mid-price bargain that emerges after a week or two.

The big problem is when he jumps 0.1 or a chelski DGW player drops 0.1, that's effectively 0.5mil in your preseason funds that you need to find to get RvP in...

If RvP goes to 14.1, it's going to make it that extra 0.5m harder to get him in.

good point. i'm prepared for that personally. still, 0.5 is better than the 3 or 4m some people have been talking about leaving in the bank.

i actually have a question about this, which i may post next page. namely: if chelsea have a blinding GW1, are their players likely to rise in price or fall? how many players will be aware of gw3, and how many will just bring in the highest scorers?

he's gonna score at least 15 points across the first three games and then pick up pace even more. he's the most reliable asset in the game. defense meanwhile is a lottery at this stage in the season, top teams often leak goals and weaker teams on paper often rise to the top, so you might not even be gaining much by doing that. imo of course 😉

My shot a an RVP team:

    Boruc (4.0)

    Ivanovic - Toure - M.Turner (Chester - Brayford)

Hazard - Walcott - Mirallas - Coutinho (Kim)

    RVP - Lukaku (Gayle)

Rather like it as opposed to my Soldado - Lukaku - Giroud front line team.

    Your thoughts?

    Got a couple of questions lads;

    A) Is there any word on Thomas' injury? He isn't flagged on FPL, neither can I find anything solid on the matter. Gone with Yacob as my 4.5

    B) Start the season with Nolan / Ben Arfa / Sess / Giaccherini?

Nolan and BArfa's opening fixtures are very very good.

Nolan is great at home, sucks away and isn't quite as good without Big Andy in the side.

BArfa has great fixtures as well after the man city GW1...

Up to you really. I think BArfa is the better player, both aren't very consistent and have iffy home/away splits...

Don't see any mention of Nolan's injury to be honest. And besides their first fixture; Toon have 3 home in 4 from GW 2-5.

I'll probably go Ben Arfa over Nolan, but I'm a little worried about his form. Nolan's showed some good pre season form.

        Thanks for the input gentlemen.

Lamps is a good differential I think, just don't have the balls to get him in.

Benteke is a good shout, crap fixtures (good for you to keep him early for cheaper)

Lallana is meh, I think that could be spend in better places. I wouldn't want to rely on him most of the time.

Baines is a good shout but I can't help but think that you could downgrade him to Coleman and spend more money on a good rotating keeper combo (Foster Boruc) and upgrade Lallana to Snodgrass, and Anelka to JRod....surely that has to be a bit more explosive.

    Migs (Lewis)
    Clyne Cuellar Mertesacker (Ward Brayford)
    Hazard Coutinho Walcott Silva (Thomas)
    Benteke Soldado Lukaku

    However, If walcott doesnt play...
A)I switch Cazorla with Walcott, and down grade a cardiff defender by .5
B)I swith Mata with Walcott, and downgrade Migs to the s'hampton duo
C)I switch Oscar with walcott, nd upgrade migs to hart

Which of these would you choose A,B, or C?
    Thanks in advance.

Dont think Mata will start both games as he's had very little pre-season. Likewise Oscar too will have limited time. IMO, only Hazard and Ramires are nailed on for both games from the Chelsea mid field. Also, since you dont have Toure - I would recommend you stick with Mig.

i don't think it changes anything personally. if you think he's going to exceed expectations early on then you should already have him in your team, and if you don't then you should consider it a good thing that so many people own him, 'cause his price will fall by the time gw4 comes along.

On the plus side, your strikeforce is probably a complete differential from most of those 40%. They are probably including Anelka to balance the books, plus one oter approx. 7.5 striker (Berb, maybe?).

Davis has high ownership. If people ship him hhis price will drop. Might be better to get a low ownership 4.0 keeper.

      Shaw is injured

Parr may not start (recovering from injury) - Moxey has that spot

I think it looks great overall - have a think about some of the points above tho. Well done.

Need help here, guys! If you help, I'll help you too 🙂

    Which option is better?

    a) Fernandinho, Zaha and K.Toure
Pros: Good teams. Fernandinho might not be attacking minded, but he'll provide a good amount of assist imo. Zaha could get lots of minutes in the start, and then I could swap him out later. Toure is pretty much nailed on, and will for sure get clean sheets in Liverpool.
Cons: We don't know if Fernandinho will be any good, Zaha might not play. I already have 2 players from Liverpool - Sturridge and Coutinho.

    b) Ben Arfa/Snodgrass/Rat
Pros: They all have great scoring/assist abilities.
Cons: Very bad teams. I already have 1 player from Newcastle. Rat might not play. This option will lead to no Manchester City or Manchester United coverage.

    So what do I pick?

Note: This is a problem regarding another manager game, where option A and B cost the same 🙂
