Two intriguing fixtures in the Premier League today, effecting both ends of the table. League leaders Manchester United reignite their great rivalry against a Liverpool side desperate to get into Europe, whilst Tottenham’s European ambitions stretch as high as the Champions League spots. They visit a Wolves side well capable of beating the top teams, but find themselves struggling in a relegation battle.

As always, the Dugout Discussion chatroom is open, and the first thing to digest is the team news from Anfield…

Liverpool XI: Reina, Johnson, Carragher, Skrtel, Aurelio, Gerrard, Lucas, Kuyt, Meireles, Maxi, Suarez.

Man United XI: Van der Sar, Rafael Da Silva, Smalling, Brown, Evra, Nani, Carrick, Scholes, Giggs, Berbatov, Rooney.

The headline team news for the hosts is that £35 million January signing, Andy Carroll, makes the substitutes bench for the first time in a Liverpool shirt. Kenny Dalglish opts for four defenders at the back, with Luis Suarez leading the line up front.

The visitors reinstate the Premier League’s top scorer to their starting eleven, with Javier Hernandez replacing the Bulgarian on the pine. Another once regular starter is back in the team after a couple of games on the touchline, as Rafael da Silva gets the nod ahead of John O’Shea.

The Dugout Discussion will stay open right up until the hotly anticipated bonus points are distributed.

Havent seen a United team as utterly woeful as this in a long time. I usually look forward to this match just because, as a United fan, its nearly always an exciting match and both teams are always up for it. Not today, United have been dreadful, Liverpool havent. Its as simple as that. Humiliating.

Tommy, you're talking absolute crapola. We got overrun at anfield last year playing 442, were lucky to beat them 3-2 at OT thanks to shonky defending and got run off the park today playing an attacking formation. Win at home, don't lose away is the way to stroll the league. We've shot ourselves in the foot big time this week.

I'm going to hold my hand up here and admit I was massively wrong. I thought this was the exact right move from United, going for a 442 with that makeshift defence and try to win an open game.

I agree that 442 should be taken outside and shot from now on. However I do think that it had the potential to work, albeit with a massive risk attached.....

Besides, any 4 in midfield without fletcher is scandalous! 😛

They needed Fletcher+the wonder twins+Park in his advanced defensive mid= to even make a dent today. Meireles half-assing it half the time out worked them. Although all three strikers in late didn't look as bad as I thought. Almost like Chelsea with a smarter Kalou (berbs).

I understand why they took Meireles off, coming off an injury. But continuity-wise you would have thought they would have taken Kuyt off. It didn't end up reflecting on Carroll well at all considering Kuyt stayed nestled up front like a greedy little dweeb.

exactly. even without the goals he'd push suarez hard, genuinely didnt know he could pass until today. those goals may look a bit sh** but it's a skill which he's pretty good at (excluding the first one the greedy clog-ridden schmoker)

Have they ever not given a player who has scored a hattrick 3bps - it's not even in contention.

Meireles was as good as Suarez when they were both on the pitch too imo.

Blimey people. Kuyt was typically awful when I posted that comment. He then scored 3 goals that as a team we put on a plate for him, he done well. 3 goals totalling 7 yards out, unique but effective in the end.

Agree with all you have said above.

Someone just needs to really make a charge. Recent results have blown the title race wide open and even Spurs if they go on a bit of a charge could be very close. The games between the top 5 are going to be crucial both in terms of points and momentum.
