The Weekend Team News

Mikel Arteta has been ruled out of Arsenal’s home game with Villa. Andre Villas-Boas is set to be without Gareth Bale for Spurs’ trip to Palace, where Jerome Thomas is sidelined for a couple of weeks for the hosts, Liverpool have good news on the defensive front and Southampton are still doubtful over Nathaniel Clyne and Luke Shaw.

Our team news section has been updated on the back of the latest press conferences and will be refreshed as today unfolds – keep an eye on this and our twitter feed ahead of what is set to be a hectic next 24-hours for Fantasy managers:

Arsene Wenger will head into tomorrow’s match against Aston Villa without the influential Mikel Arteta. Speaking to the press in the last hour, the Gunners boss admitted he is uncertain when the Spaniard will return, though according to The Mail, the playmaker could be out for up to six weeks with the injury – potentially handing spot-kicks duties to Lukas Podolski and forcing Jack Wilshere into a deeper role alongside fit-again Aaron Ramsey in front of the back-four.

Although he ruled out the likes of Thomas Vermaelen, Nacho Monreal and Ryo Miyaichi, Wenger failed to mention Theo Walcott, Bacary Sagna or Santi Cazorla this morning. The first two had picked up minor problems on international duty, while Cazorla was late flying back from Spain’s match in Ecuador amid worries of fatigue – Fantasy managers will be optimistic the trio are fine, then, though some confirmation would have gone a long way to easing our fears as we finalise our squads.

Elsewhere in north London, Andre Villas-Boas looks set to be without Gareth Bale for Tottenham’s trip to Crystal Palace on Sunday. The Welshman hasn’t played for three weeks due to injury and, when asked whether he would be available to face Ian Holloway’s side, Villas-Boas replied:

“No, because he’s been out injured for most of pre-season. He was involved in the games against Brentford and Swindon but not any others, for different reasons; pulled a muscle in his gluteus that prevented him from being involved for two weeks and he’s been complaining of pain in the foot. I think the most natural thing is to see him not involved against Palace.”

With Bale out of the equation, it’s possible that Gylfi Sigurdsson could tuck in behind Roberto Soldado, with Nacer Chadli on the left, if the visitors line up in a 4-2-3-1 formation, though the Belgian has also been fielded in “the hole” during pre-season. Alternatively, Villas-Boas may opt for the 4-3-3 shape he preferred at Porto – a scenario that could see Paulinho as the most advanced central option, with Sandro, Mousa Dembele and new boy Etienne Capoue offering plenty dynamism in the middle of the park.

Brendan Rodgers has received some positive news ahead of Liverpool’s early kick-off with Stoke tomorrow. The Reds boss expects both Daniel Agger and Martin Skrtel to be fit to face the Potters, though while the Dane will return to the starting XI, Skrtel is likely to warm the bench – Kolo Toure is firmly ahead of the Slovakian in the pecking order and has started every pre-season friendly he has been available for.

Martin Jol will hand Alex Kacaniklic a late fitness test as Fulham make their way to Sunderland. The Cottagers boss has admitted Adel Taarabt’s fitness is still an issue and with the Moroccan only likely to make the bench, Kacaniklic could be in line for a starting role on the left wing providing he gets the all clear after impressing in pre-season, according to his manager.

Southampton full-back pair Nathaniel Clyne and Luke Shaw both remain doubts for tomorrow’s trip to West Brom. Speaking to the press yesterday, Mauricio Pochettino revealed the pair are making good progress:

“We’re very happy because Luke has responded well throughout the week. With one training session left tomorrow, I think he could be in the 18 players called up for the game against West Brom. Clyney has been recovering from a little niggle that he’s had since Austria. [His involvement] depends on the training session tomorrow but, if he’s not in the group for West Brom, he’ll be most probably available for the game after. “

Clyne pulled out of the midweek England Under 21 game against Scotland after being withdrawn in last weekend’s friendly win over Real Sociedad, while Clyne has yet to feature over the summer. Pochettino may turn to Danny Fox and Callum Chambers in the event of any potential absence and the Saints boss also conceded he has yet to assess the fitness of Gaston Ramirez and Maya Yoshida, who both featured in the Japan v Uruguay friendly on Wednesday.

Michael Laudrup was awaiting the return of Wilfried Bony yesterday, after Swansea’s new forward turned out for Ivory Coast against Mexico in New Jersey in the early hours of Thursday morning. Laudrup – who will be without Jonathan de Guzman due to concussion – seemed far from happy with the situation as he prepares for tomorrow evening’s match against United:

“Bony will be back late on Thursday with jetlag, which is not great. To play for your country is great and the club should be proud of all our internationals, but having a friendly three days before the start of the season is strange. This is the last year when it will happen fortunately. That’s an intelligent decision.”

Ian Holloway handed Fantasy managers a heads-up after announcing Jerome Thomas is ruled out for two weeks with the ankle problem that saw him limp off against Lazio after just 22 minutes last weekend. Yannick Bolasie added to Palace’s boss with a hamstring injury that will keep him out “for some time”, according to the Eagles boss. With his options on the flanks limited, Holloway could keep faith with Jonny Williams as an option out wide – fortunately, he comes in at 4.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), the same price as Thomas, and looks secure for game time in light of yesterday’s news.

      Davis high ownership seems a result of people believing he will actually play. That would probably make them more inclined to sell I would think. My bet for first goalkeeper to fall in price.

    I've hardly been able to log on lately due to starting a new job and slightly more strict IT procedures! Anyway just thought I'd give a bit of an insight to Fulham and what to probably expect Fantasy-wise. The keeper, defence and Berba are nailed on (Richardson aside who'll be injured before long) but with the arrival of Taarabt & Bent, the front 4 are quite hard to call. I'd imagine our line-up will look something like this:

    Stekelenburg
    Reither Amorebieta Hangeland Richardson
    Boateng Sidwell
    Dejagah/Ruiz Berba Kaca/Taarabt
    Bent

    I'd expect that front 4 to all be rotated with the exception of Berba, and possibly not Ruiz much as Jol seems to be a big fan.

    - Kaca will likely score some solid points but if you want a nailed on cheap mid option then he's not the way to go. I expect him to see a good amount of minutes as this is being sited as a big season for him BUT he has Duff, Mesca, Taarabt and possibly Ruiz all able to play on the left

    - Boateng has played very well in our pre-season games and I reckon will be pretty nailed on although him and Sidwell may rotate with Karagounis from time to time (and we are rumoured to be after another CM). He may do well with the new BAPs system but with the limited amount of time I've seen him, I wouldn't expect a goal threat and probably not too mcuh creatively.

    - Amorebieta: 4.5 and nailed on is pretty good value. He has a somewhat colourful disciplinary record in La Liga so it might be prudent to see how that translates in the PL. Has looked good in pre-season, Senderos may get the occasional game but basically nailed on I reckon.

    - Berba always has the potential for points, personally before considering him I'd want to see how he fits in with Bent (who could be great value at 6.5 if he gets fit and nails down a place) in the team and how advanced he is or whether the plays "in the hole".

    My advice would be to wait a few games. Jol has already said Taarabt needs a few weeks to get fully fit, this will probably be the case with Bent too (not sure how much he's played in pre-season for Villa). We looked so turgid towards the end of last season and haven't looked too hot in pre-season. Given that our opening 3 fixtures aren't too good, I'd be inclined to wait for them to pass and new signings to integrate. On paper Taarabt, Berb, Ruiz, Dejagah, Kaca & Bent could be really exciting and Jol has said he's targetting 60+ goals this season - I wouldn't expect too many clean sheets.

          Fwiw, i'm looking at Amorebieta for GW 7 and 8, which are horrible weeks for some of the cheap defenders i've got. Berbatov should still be on pens shouldn't he? i'd imagine Bent will be 2nd choice.

      Agree with pretty much all of that.

      What do you think about Taarabt playing CM alongside Boateng. He seems to have a very similar skill set to what Dembele had, if Jol can perhaps coach a bit of defensive discipline he could be great there. I still feel we need someone to fill that role alongside Boateng, I like Sidwell but not as 1st choice.

    Benteke or Soldado is a better choice for GW1? (Got 3 Chelsea players, so getting Benteke would have to result in a 4pt hit in ONE of the following 2 weeks)

      I don't think benteke will score 4 points more than soldado in the next three games.

    From the BBC

    David Moyes must decide whether to include Wayne Rooney in the squad for his first Premier League game as Manchester United manager at Swansea tomorrow.

    Rooney completed 65 minutes of his first game of the summer when England defeated Scotland on Wednesday and is expected to be on the bench at the Liberty Stadium.

    Rafael and Javier Hernandez (both hamstring) and wing duo Nani and Ashley Young are all expected to be sidelined, so Wilfried Zaha stands by for his first top slight start, although Michael Carrick should recover from the eye infection which kept him out of England's friendly.

      JRod for now.

      Wait and see on how Fulham lines up before you consider Bent (Have a look at TMELs post above).

      Also, did Southampton sign that Osvaldo guy? If so, be wary that JRod might be rotated once in a while.

    Anybody have a handy link to a GK rotation spreadsheet? Want to reanalyze my Migs + Marshall combination.

    What's the general consensus on the best 4.5M keeper to pair with Migs?

      Not the answer you're looking for, but what's the point in spending more than minimum on a keeper when you already have one from a good team? Stick Mignolet in goal every game and save your 0.5 for a rainy day or a better player somewhere

        In that case, have Toure for Liverpool defensive cover for 5.0 and arsenal def cover by Szczeny

        I'd want a keeper I can play whenever Pool plays one of the top teams. From a previous Hot Topic it appears that out of the 4.5M bunch that Marshall has the best fixtures when thats the case.

      Boruc, Marshall rotates badly with migs.

        Boruc was my first choice but appears he has mostly away games when Liverpool are up against the top teams which would be the only time I'd bench Migs. In comparison Marshall on the other hand has a few decent home games. I don't need them necessarily to rotate perfectly.

          i think marshall, despite not rotating home/away very well with migno. is an astute choice if you simply want coverage for migno's away games against top 5 teams...

          migno+marshall:
          ars->SWA
          tot->WBA
          mcy->SOT
          che->SUN

          migno+boruc:
          ars->sto
          tot->new
          mcy->car
          che->eve

    I am really struggling to decide whether to take a punt on Zaha over Mirallas. Here's my reasons:

    1) Everyone has Mirallas! So it could be a good differential. Especially seeing as the rest of my team is pretty template.

    2) Would mean I can afford Ivanovic over Terry for GW1

    3) Whenever Zaha doesn't make the team I have Kim to step in, who I feel is nailed and will get points.

    4) Leaves me with a spare 0.5m so I can still make the planned changes in GW2 (Ivanovic---->Zab) and 3 (Lukaku----->Bony) even if they slightly increase in price.

    What do you think? I have almost convinced myself. It's just...Mirallas has had a great pre-season! Goals and assists galore!
