On the eve of the new season, we roll our second analysis article on the Sky Sports game. After previously examining formations, we now turn our attention towards the Man of the Match (MOTM) recipients.

The MOTM award is worth five points in the Sky Sports game – the same amount as a goal or clean sheet – and warrants some attention when selecting our lineup. As the MOTM is given out by the Sky match reporter, and can often differ from the televised award, it is far more difficult to predict and quantify than likely goals or clean sheets. Using last season’s data, however, we can look to highlight certain players and positions and their potential chances of securing future awards.

Most Awards Per Club

Firstly let’s take a look at the players who hogged the limelight and achieved the most Man of the Match awards for their respective clubs.

There are a number of significant points to note from our table:

  • There’s no sign of Robin Van Persie, who collected a paltry four MOTM awards in spite of his goalscoring heroics for United. So, while we can perhaps rely upon the Dutchman for goals, we shouldn’t expect a haul of supplementary points.
  • Man City seem to be the only team in the top seven without a stand-out performer; David Silva fared best with four MOTM awards.
  • Midfielders earned the most MOTM awards for five of the top six teams, highlighting that a midfielder who plies his trade for a side that generally tends to dominate matches, is most likely to receive the award.
  • In the bottom 11 teams, there were only two midfielders who claimed the most MOTM awards for their respective sides, highlighting that a defender or striker seems more likely to receive the award for a “lesser team”.

Top Overall Recipients

Let’s now follow that up by taking a look at the players who gained five or more MOTM awards last season.

NameStartsMOTM Starts – MOTM %
Santi Cazorla371027%
Luis Suarez331030%
Wayne Rooney221045%
Gareth Bale33927%
Robert Snodgrass35925%
Ashley Williams37821%
Juan Mata31619%
Marouane Fellaini31619%
Frank Lampard21628%
Dimitar Berbatov32618%
Romelu Lukaku20630%
Ryan Shawcross37513%
James Collins29517%
Eden Hazard31516%
Steven Pienaar35514%

Most of the names in this table won’t come as a surprise due to their performances and accumulated points in 2012/13. Let’s take a look at some of the more interesting points, however:

  • Wayne Rooney achieved MOTM in a massive 45% of his games started.
  • Robert Snodgrass and Ashley Williams achieved a surprisingly large amount of MOTM awards.
  • With the futures of Rooney, Luis Suarez and Gareth Bale uncertain, Santi Cazorla appears the stand-out ‘big hitter’ option once again.
  • Chelsea had three players with five or more MOTM awards apiece. Factor in the return of Romelu Lukaku and the potential signing of Rooney and it’s fair to say the awards could be spread even more evenly amongst Jose Mourinho’s side.

Awards By Position

Lastly we will take a look at which positions received the MOTM award the most times (excluding the relegated teams).

PositionTotal MOTM awards% of total MOTM
Goalkeeper154%
Defender7522%
Midfielder15747%
Forward8425%

These stats help to back up our previous article on formations, showing that once again midfielders come out on top. There is very little between forwards and defenders, whilst goalkeepers were rarely awarded MOTM awards.

Looking Forward

As MOTM awards are harder to predict than goals we shouldn’t get too carried away and start picking players on the basis that they are MOTM “darlings”. However, combined with passing and tackling bonus, the chances of earning these awards can certainly help settle some internal struggles we may have when choosing between two players.

For example, in the contest of Santi Cazorla vs Theo Walcott, there is simply no comparison. Both produced 12 assists, while Walcott scored 14 goals to Cazorla’s 12, however, after factoring in the MOTM awards and bonus, Walcott finished on a total points haul of 174 (admittedly with less games) whilst Cazorla scored 262 points, 50 of which were from MOTM awards.

As for this season, we can expect similar trends to last. Expensive midfielders who play in “the hole” or advanced positions from the top teams should regularly receive MOTM gongs. For the lesser sides, their dominant defenders and match winning strikers will earn the plaudits. However, with an influx of some new big name forwards, we can perhaps expect that the frontmen to achieve a higher percentage of MOTM awards this time around.

This Season’s Benefactors

While we can anticipate that the patterns of awards may be similar, there are an array of players who could well emerge as stronger candidates this term.

If, as expected, David Silva is handed a regular role, and Man City’s new quartet of forwards start firing, we can anticipate the Spaniard to receive a lot more MOTM awards, in a similar vein to Cazorla for the Gunners. The possibility of Liverpool’s Philippe Coutinho supporting the Liverpool attack should also see him established as a favourite – particularly if Luis Suarez is out of the picture at Anfield. Finally, on the other side of Merseyside, Kevin Mirallas is widely expected to play in an advanced position on the right of the Everton front three and could well make a dent in the awards handed to a deep-lying Marouane Fellaini.

Far too philosophical for a Friday evening.
I was giving some thought to last year's winner's account of how he approached the season. One thing that I ignored when I first read it was the fact that he tried as much as possible to avoid having any of his attackers play against his starting def/gk, even benching the player with the higher expected returns to avoid the direct confrontation.
Doing that will give you a higher points ceiling each week. Of course, whether it pays off for any given week is another story, but at least it should open the door for higher returns. Over the course of a season the strategy SHOULD yield more points.

I agree with this. Many would disagree of course but playing the percentages regularly will ALWAYS give you less points.

Count me as one of the many who would disagree.

Trying as much as possible to avoid these confrontations would not only be a nightmare to orchestrate but it doesn't take into account that your GK could concede then save a penalty or earn decent save points. Defenders can concede and grab a goal or an assist.

Yes the clean sheets are the bread butter of your defensive picks but far less so in recent years. Also the theory assumes not only that when you bench a defensive option they won't save a penalty, grab a goal or grab an assist it ALSO assumes that when they concede you will have the opposition player who scores or assists which frequently isn't the case.

Too many variables to be viable in my opinion.

It was a good read and in theory its right but honestly I came 14th one season and I did the exact opposite.

It's classic results orientated thinking. No one will ever know the true winning formula for Fantasy Football because so much is decided by luck. It's what makes up the beautiful mystique of this game.

      I have to stop drinking.

I agree that luck plays a huge part. But at least having the defenders avoid the attackers opens the door for luck to do its thing.
I'd like to see a ghost team win the whole thing so that people will sah that he key to winning is not making any transfers!

As I mentioned above though, goalkeepers and defenders still have save points, assists and goals when they miss out on clean sheets. Also it won't always be your chosen player from the opposition that dirtys your GK/DFs cleanies.

Clean sheets are an elusive reward, and in some cases like West Ham last season, downright random. No point worrying yourself about internal conflicts in your team.

I think I am set on an GW3 WC

    - Transfer window shut
    - Review which cheap options are starters/ form
    - Price rises for first international break
    - See which of the new signing settle
    - RVP.....................

I think I did it around the 2nd internaitonal break last year, versus my main rival in the late DGW. I had built up enough of a lead that I could cover as many DGW players as I wanted by taking hits, but still remaining far enough ahead of him to be confident

I'm really undecided as to the early wildcard.
I managed to cover the dgws quite well last year. As long as there are several weeks notice for the dgw, and you're willing to take a few hits, then all should be okay.
That said, who knows what this year will bring? It would be nice to keep a trump card to deal with any late-season surprises.

He is not guaranteed either. Mourinho could play
Azpi---ivan---terry---cole first game. Luizis back for the second. But I imagine he will start one.

Benteke does not have a good scoring record against the top teams. Leave Benteke be for now, and get him in later when they play lighter opposition

I think the changes you did, Rata, were much better than starting to throw Anelka into the mix.

Leaving out Liverpool might hurt though, but then again starting without RVP might hurt ++...:)

It's good to back in the FPL and on FFS for another season!

    Here's my team:

    Cech, Boruc
    Baines, Kaboul, Rat (Clyne, Chester)
    Hazard, Ramires, Snodgrass, Tonev (Adam)
    RVP, Benteke, Anelka

    3 Punts in my team

Altidore (American Pride, And a hattrick vs Bosnia)
Aspas (looks exactly like David Villa [my favorite player] in terms of playing style)
Rat (Veteran, but not too old, played at Shakhtar for 10 years, winning mentality)

    Thoughts?

I personally like the Altidore pick and think he's underrated here.
Aspas is ok but Coutinho/Sturridge are better and more reliable even if they're more expensive
      Can't comment on Rat.

I may jump on the Jozywagon shortly.

You should jump off Aspas' bandwagon in the event that Willian moves to Melwood.

I toyed with the idea of going with Rat, I have a feeling I'll score more points with my choice of Reid.

      Good luck!
