Season Predictions 2013/14 – The View From The Scouts

We wanted to post this before deadline this morning but, due to our technical issues, we were unable to take that opportunity. Rather than waste the chance to embarrass ourselves, however, we thought we’d stick these up this evening, regardless.

Last season many of us were left red-faced thanks to our terrible predictions for the 2012/13 season.

I was left particularly embarrassed with my now laughable assertion that Charles N’Zogbia would be last season’s best differential. Meanwhile Granville’s predictions that Sam Alladyce would be the first boss to bite the bullet and Shinji Kagawa would be the season’s top assister also failed to materialise.

Credit though went to Anorak for correctly predicting that Michu would be the year’s star budget midfielder. Hard to believe the attacking midfielder was initially priced at just 6.5m at the start of last season. Mark’s prediction that Rickie Lambert would shine in the budget forward category also proved correct.

But enough of last year, here’s our thoughts on the season ahead for you to bookmark and use to embarrass/congratulate us as the season progresses.

Moderator Evs knows all about Top 5s, he was a top 5 player at the end the FPL 2012/13 season and was even in with a shout of winning the competition on the final day. Will his experience reap dividends when it comes to predicting the 2013/14 season?

About 200 out of 500 would be knocked out of Early Bird if the gameweek ended now. Quite a few in trouble in LMS as the average is 31.

All those who are less than the average. Don't expect too many after Chelsea. Next week probably 40 depending on numbers.

After the leagues update, bizarrely in my mini-league my brother's team is in the "To be added after the next points update'' section even though he submitted a team hours before the deadline, would there be any reason for this? Do you know if his points for this round will be added to the league?

Can' tell you anything you don't know Lawro - sounds like some sort of bizzare technical fault and I would expect the points to be added.

I am surprised to see you didn't go for Aspas having been the man to get the bandwagon rolling.

As requested I've reposted this to keep it off the bottom.

    Evening deadzone.

I thought it would be interesting to take a look at the differences in what bonus point scores would have been on the old system and write some general notes about what the new system will mean.

Mixed feelings for me personally. Some look better, some look worse - though in general I think the new system is better. And A number of them are actually fairly similar.

Note that since the average '3BP winning' BPS score is considerably lower this season (For example Benteke had a BPS of 14 and an ESP of 51), there will be more ties this season, and therefore more bonus points awarded out on average per game. Apart from the United game, all 6 of the other games ended with a tie for bonus points. In todays 7 games 49 bonus points were awarded, it would have been 45 on the old system.

It's hard to get much else out of it, other than in general defenders who don't score/assist get rewarded more. On the other hand, defenders scoring are no longer nailed on for bonus points (see Luna).

Another big difference is the 3BP that Mignolet got. Under the old system he would've finished joint 10th out of all the players in that game.

I took these values simply from Detailed Stats on the FPL page and I did it manually so I might have made a mistake!

    -----------

    Liverpool vs Stoke
    Mignolet 3
    Johnson 2
    Aspas 2

    Old system:
    Sturridge 3
    Henderson 2
    Gerrard 1

    -----------

    Arsenal vs Aston Villa
    Benteke 3
    Giroud 2
    Szczesny 1
    Clark 1

    Old system:
    Benteke 3
    Luna 2
    Westwood 1

    -----------

    Norwich vs Everton
    Coleman 3
    Barkley 3
    Whittaker 1

    Old system:
    Coleman 3
    Barkley 2
    Whittaker 2

    -----------

    Sunderland vs Fulham
    Hangeland 3
    Hughes 2
    Kasami 2

    Old system:
    Kasami 3
    Duff 2
    Sidwell 1
    Taarabt 1

    -----------

    West Brom vs Southampton
    Shaw 3
    Lovren 3
    Lambert 1

    Old system:
Ward-Prowse 3 (? - This value might be broken, he's listed as 94 minutes played and has an enormous ESP)
    Lambert 2
    Shaw 1

    -----------

    West Ham vs Cardiff City
    Cole 3
    Nolan 3
    Reid 1
    O'Brien 1

    Old system:
    Cole 3
    Nolan 2
    Connolly 1 (?)

    -----------

    Swansea vs Man Utd
    Welbeck 3
    Van Persie 2
    Rooney 1

    Old system:
    Welbeck 3
    Van Persie 3
    Evra 1

Only saw the highlights but I thought he looked a poacher and a threat. His fixtures may come against him in the opening weeks though. With kinder fixtures he's worth the investment i think.

Just saw Mark's massive score. Makes you wonder if it's worth bothering when you change to Foster and Toure from Coleman and Mignolet the night before the season starts.
