Another strong Villa display. Another Christian Benteke goal. This time, however, Paul Lambert’s blossoming side fall short as Branislav Ivanovic is allowed to stay on the pitch to nod home Chelsea’s winner.

The Game Changer

Arguably, referee Kevin Friend was the most influential individual on show. There’s also a strong case for Christian Benteke who struck his third goal of the season and has now scored nine league goals in his last 10 outings. Branislav Ivanovic’s goal proved the difference, however, and rewarded those who invested their double Gameweek funds whilst underlining the goal threat previously on show in Saturday’s win over Hull.

Friend’s decision to brandish a yellow for Ivanovic’s lashing out on Benteke was undoubtedly the turning point. It allowed the Serbian to demonstrate his ability at set-plays as, just minutes later, he headed home Frank Lampard’s dead ball delivery.

Ivanovic was the only Chelsea defender denied Fantasy Premier League (FPL) bonus points from the Hull victory. Despite escaping a red card and being left for dead by Gabby Agbonlahor for Villa’s goal, Ivanovic looks set to earn bonus to make him Chelsea’s top scoring double Gameweek asset.

The Underused

While Benteke will earn huge investment following another goal and effective display, those who are struggling to stretch their funds to the Belgian will be eyeing the impact of Gabby Agbonlahor. So impressive during Villa’s run at the end of last season, he has started the new campaign in stunning form and yet claims less than 2% FPL ownership.

Instrumental in the victory at the Emirates, it was his turn of pace and delivery that set up Benteke for his equaliser. Agbonlahor has scored five goals and earned four assists in his last ten league outings.

The Selection Poser

It’s hardly a poser. Jose Mourinho’s decision to start with Demba Ba and leave Romelu Lukaku shackled on the bench disappointed Fantasy managers and Chelsea fans alike. His introduction for the ineffective Ba on 65 minutes provided little consolation. Lukaku played fewer minutes than any other Chelsea striker in the double Gameweek, having looked primed to start the campaign following a convincing pre-season.

Mourinho’s reluctance to hand Lukaku a central role on the Premier League stage is a puzzle. Perhaps he will start at Old Trafford on Monday and face a defence which he terrified on the final day of last season at the Hawthorns. It’s unlikely to make a difference – Lukaku’s ownership and price look set to slide.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

    Thinking about captaincy I have Dzeko, Sturridge, Silva, Walcott and Lambert

    Dzeko - not a certain starter so will rule him out
    Sturridge - Liverpool away form usually pales in comparison to their home. Plus Villa are looking far more solid this season than last.
    Silva - A safe-ish option but unlikely to break 7 or 8 points on a good day.
    Walcott - Arsenal looked terrible on the weekend and were up against hopeless lethargic opposition earlier tonight so hard to say.
    Lambert - The one i'm leaning towards... but it just looks wrong in my team!

    Posting another call for the "Second Year Syndrome" league, now that the pages have stopped flying by so quickly.

    The league is only for players in their 2nd year of FPL. We'll be taking new entries all the way up until GW2 kicks off. The league code is 1938-450859.

          Look at the end of last season. People were already planning then to get him in for this season!

          He was fantastic, up and down, up and down, end product.

          I dont think its just of the back of GW1.

          He's just as attacking as Baines on the left, minus penalties and freekicks and corners.

      Why can I picture the first 11 standing side by side measuring their tinky winkys?

      Baines: "I'm higher"
      Mirallas: "No I'm higher look!"
      Fellaini: "You is avin a laugh my Belgian friend, I is most definitely higher!"
      Anichebe: "Look!"

            If it had been Baines at the end of it. Would that have been racial stereotyping?

            Seriously, I hate all this racial card rubbish. Racism only continues to breathe when people keep pulling cards out and giving it the time of day.

      I'd say no it isn't. Mourinho's post match comments indicated he is rotating his striker spot between the three of them (at least until Rooney comes in anyway!). With Lukaku the only man not to get a start yet, and considering is outrageous display against the same defence only a few months ago, I'd say the likelihood is he starts, and if anyone's gonna score it'll be him.

      And with 8.5m to spend, I wouldn't say there is anyone available that makes me feel you'd miss out if you didn't have them.

      I like B (Although I went Soldado/Mirallas). It's definitely riskier, but I believe it has a higher upside. I would pick Snodgrass over Sissoko, but I guess if you're making the move now we're not 100% sure he'll be fit, although it looks like it.

      I think adding Lambert to Jrod would at very best only give you an extra 3 or 4 points over what you're likely to get from your first Southampton attacker. I'd probably rather spread my chances than gamble on one team, especially when Lambert and Jrod may not be quite as nailed on as before with Osvaldo coming in.

    If you were to invest in the Southmpton midfield would you choose Lallana or Wanyama?
    Knowing Osvaldo is going to play.

      It's just unlucky really. It was a clear handball and the ref was in a good position to call that. Also, Benteke got booked twice this week, which is unusual for a striker to get booked in two consecutive games.

      Blargh. I just can't believe how many times I went back and forth between him and Sturridge in the 1/2 hour before the final deadline. Oh well, hopefully Dannyboy will make up for it this weekend.

    Are you planning to get Hazard back, or do you have Oscar or Lampard?

    I think losing Hazard is a risk and could really backfire. Regardless of blank GW3.

    Still early days.

        is that wise though? there's a good bit of rotation right now and it could continue.

        gw1 is the time to entertain hits so as to sort out our pathetic picks from the off! Do it now, or have those rotting gits in your team forever 😉

          I'd wildcard before I'd take the hit so early. Try and line up the trade ideas into GW3 and just keep rolling.

        Dig a bit more on Newcastle. But will Sissoko be playing up again now that Cabaye has said, er...baye?

        I think you have to give Snodgrass a proper look due to the next few fixtures though. Hope he's fit this weekend.

        Benchable aswell Puncheon.

        Scored me a few points last season coming of the bench. Played him a few times aswell and did well.

    Heart was telling me to do this, head was saying don't take an 8 point hit but I think it'll be justified in the end:

    Lukaku -> Aguero
    Hazard -> Ben Arfa
    Ivanovic -> Zabaleta

        there is a major risk you are getting a player who will be rotated, if not gw2 but rotation in gw 3 would be a disaster

    95 points, just took an 8 point hit for next week to take advantage of price rises. On paper my team will now be fine for the rest of the season.
