The Knee Jerk

The Knee Jerk – Wednesday

Another strong Villa display. Another Christian Benteke goal. This time, however, Paul Lambert’s blossoming side fall short as Branislav Ivanovic is allowed to stay on the pitch to nod home Chelsea’s winner.

The Game Changer

Arguably, referee Kevin Friend was the most influential individual on show. There’s also a strong case for Christian Benteke who struck his third goal of the season and has now scored nine league goals in his last 10 outings. Branislav Ivanovic’s goal proved the difference, however, and rewarded those who invested their double Gameweek funds whilst underlining the goal threat previously on show in Saturday’s win over Hull.

Friend’s decision to brandish a yellow for Ivanovic’s lashing out on Benteke was undoubtedly the turning point. It allowed the Serbian to demonstrate his ability at set-plays as, just minutes later, he headed home Frank Lampard’s dead ball delivery.

Ivanovic was the only Chelsea defender denied Fantasy Premier League (FPL) bonus points from the Hull victory. Despite escaping a red card and being left for dead by Gabby Agbonlahor for Villa’s goal, Ivanovic looks set to earn bonus to make him Chelsea’s top scoring double Gameweek asset.

The Underused

While Benteke will earn huge investment following another goal and effective display, those who are struggling to stretch their funds to the Belgian will be eyeing the impact of Gabby Agbonlahor. So impressive during Villa’s run at the end of last season, he has started the new campaign in stunning form and yet claims less than 2% FPL ownership.

Instrumental in the victory at the Emirates, it was his turn of pace and delivery that set up Benteke for his equaliser. Agbonlahor has scored five goals and earned four assists in his last ten league outings.

The Selection Poser

It’s hardly a poser. Jose Mourinho’s decision to start with Demba Ba and leave Romelu Lukaku shackled on the bench disappointed Fantasy managers and Chelsea fans alike. His introduction for the ineffective Ba on 65 minutes provided little consolation. Lukaku played fewer minutes than any other Chelsea striker in the double Gameweek, having looked primed to start the campaign following a convincing pre-season.

Mourinho’s reluctance to hand Lukaku a central role on the Premier League stage is a puzzle. Perhaps he will start at Old Trafford on Monday and face a defence which he terrified on the final day of last season at the Hawthorns. It’s unlikely to make a difference – Lukaku’s ownership and price look set to slide.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Rat won't be playing, so that's 0 points from a £5M defender. And Lukaku's a huge rotation risk who'll probably score 1 point for making a substitute appearance and may or may not score I'm the little playing time he has. Personally I think you should. You have 2 dead weight players. Ship them out early to help build that 4 point loss back quicker

What do u guys think about Ravel Morrison?
He was the best youth prospect at United, but had a lot off the field issues and run ins with the law, so Fergie showed him the door.
I would give him a few weeks to show me what he can do, but wanted to see what other were thinking.

Made a transfer in a gondala ski lift halfway up a mountain a half hour after it had broken down. Was meant to be the last run of the day, we were cutting it close, when it broke down it was getting late, sun went behind mountain, Temp dropped to -17, two German teenagers started crying and I brought in Cisse for BA 🙂

I'm playing ivan over chester as well just because he always has a chance of scoring
Don't do it, You'd be surprised at the end of the season how many more points you can have by not taking a hit. Just give yourself some time. its only gw1

I'd do Soldado over Aguero for assured gametime.

Ivan is the better choice, as Hull will not keep a clean sheet.

Take a hit if you want, but that equates to you earning 1 point more than had you just gone with Zab the whole time.

Yeah I was more thinking a likely clean sheet will basically mean I don't lose points on the transfer (I want to bring him in for the long run too, basically making it a free transfer) But also the more likely that Zab could grab an assist.

Or it could go horribly wrong and Zab gets a paltry 2 points.

Yep, good memory wow. And yeah I am too, but with all the sword waving lately about the money they have to spend they really need to put up or shut up. At this point I'll believe it when I see it. I still have faith they will sign someone of consequence but most bigger clubs have already taken care of their business with time to see the players integrated into the team. Rushing it always makes them seen so unprepared.

And I will have to watch Ramsey closer, I never fancied him much. Good game for him huh?

      - RM would have an epic front line with Bale, Suarez and Ronaldo.

      - Arsenal desperately need a new midfielder and striker so those signings would be great for them

      - I'd love to see Ozil at United, precisely the type of player we need.

I only take point hits when the result of such a hit is almost guaranteed to benefit me.

For example, if there was a future DGW player that I really wanted, a 4 point hit is a small price to pay for a player that will get double game time.

I would never consider an 8 point hit. That is when the wildcard comes out.

only when you are going to not have enough players to have a full team and even then I would want to be at least 2 players short to justify it. Most people save the wild card for a huge change of motion like a dgw or until injuries are high

I'd need 5 transfers to wc I think. I'd never take more than -8 points though, I just wouldn't make the transfers.

I think I've taken an 8 point hit twice ever including this week.

Hits are for investment in DGW's. or a few players terribly out of form for players with excellent fixtures.

Save your WC man (unless you are decimated with injuries)....dont listen to those who are playing it now!

Opinions on doing Ivan -> Zab for -4? Already use FT for Kol -> Coleman

    Rest of my team :

    Mig / 4.0

Ivan / Chester / Coleman / Collins / Turner (Cardiff)

    Haz / Wally / Mirallas / Kim / Nolan

    Sturridge / Soldado / Tekkers

To everybody considering the Ivan -> Zab for -4...

Ivan earned 15 points. Zabaleta earned 10.

15 - 4 = 11 points earned by you choosing Ivan after the point penalty.
    11 - 10 = 1 point earned for having Ivan over Zab for GW1.

In other words, even with a four point hit, you've earned 1 point more than if you had Zab the whole time. And with Zab a sure starter for some juicy fixtures, he's much more likely to get a clean sheet than Ivan.

    DO IT.

        Flawed, perhaps.

Perhaps the point I was trying to make was that the four point hit will probably be recovered in the City clean sheet against Cardiff versus Chelsea's non-clean sheet against United.

But the more I think about it, the less it actually matters. Either scenario seems to land you the same number of points.

      I agree and disagree.

A sideways transfer from Lukaku -> Dzeko just continues the misery of rotation and inevitable need for a transfer out.

However, there is priority on taking out Lukaku, the underperforming and value-decreasing player, over Hazard, who at least got minutes.

fair enough. but I think it'll be at least a few more weeks before we have any indication of that which is a bit far off to be saving a FT

I totally agree. either welbeck or rooney imo. or kagawa perhaps

I can't see either of those happening. rooney moving less likely than bale staying for me. why united would dare sell rooney to one of their biggest domestic rivals who seem to be having striker problems really puzzles me

I think people should be looking at whoever they don't have out of soldado/sturridge/bony

and yes haz > silva is a better play to get a city attacker but the problem is that Lukaku isn't nailed whereas haz is.

I've come to realize that this transfer really doesn't matter, nor is it productive.

The -4 hit will likely come back to you in the form of a City CS versus a Chelsea non-CS.

However, you're better off just sticking with Ivan to ensure those 4 points, rather than gamble with them.

Ivan has just as much, if not more attacking threat than Zab, so that is no advantage to transfer Zab in, either.

Just reading the Gunner talk about.

Hoping they get Benzema, Michu and Fellaini. They wont but.... Dont want di Maria. He's not what we need. Podolski deserves a run on that wing now and then, he's good at coming in at the back post too. Arsenal lack a real threat in the box. Giroud has no coordination in his legs, he looks like a giraffe in their sometimes. Benzema would be a really great in their, he's quick and can score in tight spaces. Fellaini - goes with saying. Neither Ramsey nor Wilshire do a decent job on the defensive end and can really be caught ball watching sometimes. It's Fellaini's favoured position. Michu behind Benzema - jeeeesh

I love how people diss "The Donkey" just because it's fashionable. He's been scoring goals since preseason and his confidence is sky high.

Giroud is arguably a bigger threat than Benz in the box - his aerial presence allows Theo, Santi, and Gibbs to whip in crosses all game long. Benzema gets marked out of games too often and also tends to drift wide left. Class player though and I would love to see him at Arsenal.

Theo is the only natural winger in the squad and Chambo is out for 3 months. di Maria would be a massive acquisition. Poldi's workrate down the left is remarkable but he isn't suited to be a wide player.

Can't see Fellaini moving to the Emirates; I think he's headed to OT. I think we may have a shot at Kondogbia or Pogba.

I'd take either of those in a flash. Take your point but Giroud does need to sharpen up a bit with his shots

Telegraph reported yesterday that we put in a 20M bid for Pogba. Take this with a grain of salt of course.
