Continuing our weekly article on the the Sky Sports game, we bring you the analysis of Gameweek 2, including the usual data – Man of the Match (MoTM) awards, bonus point darlings and the current market trends, before examining the weekend fixtures and our preferred captain strategy for Gameweek 3.

Gameweek 2 Man of the Match Awards

These were the players that caught the eye of the Sky Sports reporters from last weekend’s fixtures achieving the Man of the Match award (worth an additional 5 points).

FixtureMoTM
Fulham vs ArsenalTheo Walcott
Everton vs West BromSeamus Coleman
Hull vs NorwichCurtis Davies
Newcastle vs West HamMatthew Jarvis
Southampton vs SunderlandRickie Lambert
Stoke vs Crystal PalaceCharlie Adam
Aston Villa vs LiverpoolDaniel Sturridge
Tottenham vs SwanseaPaulinho
Cardiff vs Man CityFraizer Campbell
Man Utd vs ChelseaNemanja Vidic

While Gameweek 1 passed without incident, eyebrows can perhaps be raised this time around. There are a number of contentious awards on show – Nemanja Vidic was perhaps fortunate to benefit given Wayne Rooney’s return and committed performance on Monday night. Rooney achieved MoTM in 45% of his games played last season so it’s perhaps surprising to see him missing out against Chelsea.

Once again goalkeepers were ignored despite a good number of clean sheets on show from last weekend’s results. Looking elsewhere, four midfielders achieved the award compared to three defenders and forwards – a pretty even spread.

It’s worth noting that Paulinho has now achieved the award in both his league starts so far and with Andre Villas-Boas fielding the Brazilian in a more advanced position on Sunday, he is already shaping up to be a worthy consideration at just 6.6 million.

Gameweek 2 Bonus Points

Six goalkeepers achieved bonus points from collecting five or more saves. Cut-price option Keiren Westwood of Sunderland (3.7m) was one of the beneficiaries and looks like a good option for those needing extra funds to upgrade their squad in other areas. Ben Foster, Hugo Lloris, David Stockdale, Wojciech Szczęsny and Michel Vorm were the others to register five or more saves last weekend.

In defence, nine players fetched bonus, six for tackles and four for passes completed – interestingly, Southampton’s centre-back Dejan Lovren was the only defender to pick up bonus for tackles and passes: he comes in at an affordable 5.2 million and continues to impress across the Fantasy games.

Again, the bulk of the bonus points arrived in midfield, with the forwards missing out. There were 16 midfield beneficiaries in total: seven for tackling and nine for passes completed. New signings, Etienne Capoue of Spurs and Scott Parker of Fulham were amongst them and were very close to achieving bonus in both areas. Capoue was just three passes short of 60 completed, while Parker was a single tackle away from doubling up in his debut against Arsenal. Liverpool’s Lucas and the Gunners’ Aaron Ramsey also continue to rake in bonus points; both gained passing points last weekend.

A reminder that Fantasy Football Scout members can access all information regarding bonus points using player stats and clicking the Sky Sports tab.

The Transfer Trends

WilshereArsenal6.22.13%
ZahaMan Utd4.92.11%
WilliamsSwansea6.21.95%

Juan Mata (2.63%) and David Luiz (2.37%) continue to be shifted out of Sky Sports squads in big numbers ahead of this week’s blank. Arsene Wenger ‘rested’ Jack Wilshere at the weekend and he has since picked up a slight knock against Fenerbahce, leading to him being ranked third in the “transferred out” column this week; Wilshere has since been passed fit for the north London derby, though. Swansea’s Ashley Williams, who last season claimed eight MotM awards, has suffered from two defeats so far this season and is also a slight injury doubt this weekend: almost 2% of Sky Sports managers lost patience with the defender in the last seven days. Finally, United’s Wilfried Zaha failed to make the bench on Monday night: his stock is in decline with over 2% of managers choosing to get rid as the pre-season promise dissolves.

Top Transfers In

RoseTottenham4.73.88%
BarkleyEverton4.33.78%
ShawSouthapton5.33.27%
SoldadoTottenham8.13.26%
PaulinhoTottenham6.63.20%

Cut-price options Danny Rose (4.7m), Ross Barkley (4.3m) and Luke Shaw (5.3) continue to be drafted in by over 3% of Sky Sports managers and all three are amongst the best options for points per million so far. Tottenham’s 100% start to the season has seen 3% of Fantasy managers take a fancy to Roberto Soldado and over 3% have also snapped up the aforementioned Paulinho ahead of the trip to the Emriates.

Gameweek 2 Proposed Captain Strategy

Last week our “locked in” theory was proved correct: you do indeed only get a single captain change within a Gameweek (without transfers) which highlights the importance of pre-planning so you can use your change effectively.

This week’s captain options are rather limited due to only having fixtures on Saturday and Sunday but here are a couple of scenarios that stand out. Significantly, we also have to look forward to Gameweek 4, with a certain Dutch striker lined up with an extremely favourable fixture.

Captain Option 1

You have a captain playing in Saturday’s fixtures and use a captain change to switch to one taking part in Sunday’s encounters. If you used Option 2 from last week’s article you will be coming into this Gameweek armed with a Man City player as skipper, allowing you to use your change on Sunday morning.

Our Strategy:
Sergio Aguero → Robin Van Persie

Using the above strategy you would not only have Aguero for the home clash with Hull, you would get Van Persie for United’s visit to Liverpool and also go into Gameweek 4 with the armband on the Dutchman for that Gameweek 4 Old Trafford clash with Palace.

Captain Option 2

You have a captain playing Saturday and use a transfer to a player taking part in Sunday’s matches. This saves your captain change, allowing you to use it later in the Gameweek to prepare for Gameweek 4.

Our Strategy:
Sergio Aguero → Daniel Sturridge

Using this method you could transfer out Aguero in order to select your preferred choice of captain for Sunday’s fixtures and then use your captain change after the games to prepare for Gameweek 4. Sturridge to Van Persie being the obvious move.

Morrison or Cole most likely to start? Tempting to gamble on Morrison (Ravel).

Took a hit for the 2nd time in a row, but it will hopefully save me from using wildcard, my team is quite alright, but still needs a tiny bit of tweeking.

Yea that's what im guessing too. Might as well just gamble on Morrison then, feels like he's more likely to make an impact of the bench. Need to get rid of one of them after this gw for sure.

Thinking about it there are some plus points to playing Lamela in the hole. The last player to succeed there was Bale (in a free role which Lamela has the skills to play), they've failed to fill it with Siggy and Holtby, and Lamela is a goalscorer so wider roles suit that skill less.

Could also envisage Soldado and Lamela being a great striker combination, Soldado forces the defensive line deeper because of the threat of his one-touch finishing and acceleration, Lamela then has loads of space in the hole behind him. Push up, and Soldado gets you. Screwed either way.

Catch is that AVB does prefer 4-3-3 to 4-2-3-1 though.

I think he will have to switch to 4-2-3-1 this season, to get the best out of this squad. It's almost well documented that he favors the 4-3-3 over other formations, but he has previously played the 4-2-3-1 for Spurs. Can see him do the same again on most occasions. It's going to be interesting though.

Im a spurs fan and ill admit its almost anyones guess for our line up in midfield.
The reason Soldado is a good choice is because hes almost certain to start.

Id assume Lamela on the right and Eriksen in the middle, but that means leaving a CM/CDM out.

Also dont completely write off Holtby... Hes coming back from injury by scoring two screamers in two games!

Attacking Spurs midfielders have been such a pain with the exception of Bale, the addition of Townsend to that list makes you possibly the highest risk/highest reward team in the game.

I think the whole going big on defence concept is a little too much, and we might well see things change when the goals start to flow.

But when selecting defenders, is pass completion the key factor now, especially if two players are the same price and play for similar teams?

The only thing that seems clear is that a clean sheet can be worth more now, even when there are goalscorers. That won't change when there are fewer clean sheets, and we always bought defenders to get clean sheets.

To me that makes an expensive CB (like Vidic) more valuable. I won't be changing formation but I might spend a little more on my defence to grab those extra few points.

Repost, lost on the bottom of the last page:

I've decided on wildcarding for GW 4 to bring RVP in. How does this look?

    Mignolet (Daniels)
    Mertesacker, Collins, Clyne (Chester, BTurner)
    Walcott, Coutinho, HBA, Brady (Jedinak)
    RVP, Benteke, Soldado

£0.6 in bank after prices update tomorrow.

HBA is a short-term punt, I like his next two fixtures (villa, HULL), I'll most likely swap him out for Mirallas for GW 6. I've gone with Brady over Kim because of his penalty duties and better run of fixtures.

based on their stats so far it looks a decent option, vidic totally hoovered up the bps against chelsea but they were playing no striker and lobbing tons of balls down there... id like to see a bigger sample before, but based on fiturs anyway you'd kinda expect it to be clean sheets aplenty

Sorry to those who've already answered me on this but I'd like to get some more thoughts and it's vitally important for Paulinho's FPL prospects.

I was under the impression that AVB preferred a 4-3-3 formation (e.g. http://bleacherreport.com/articles/1683832-does-signing-paulinho-allow-andre-villas-boas-to-play-4-3-3-at-spurs ). He even tried it last week against the Swans. Pratik and Arsene's Boys disagree but I'm not convinced.

    Questions
    A) Will he continue to try for a 4-3-3 with the new signings? Or do those who think he's a 4-2-3-1 man firmly think he will do that?
    B) How would they line up in that formation?
    C) What impact on Paulinho?

I personally think a 4231 works better with their squad. Can have Paulinho and Dembele alongside each other, then Chaldi Lamel and Eriksen or whoever the three will be behind Soldado. It pushes Paulinho deeper, but I think its better for the team as it allows all the best players in their best positions

My first advice is wait and watch....Don't be in a hurry to get in Paulinho, as no one is quite clear on how this will impact him. I think he is very nailed on, but I'm still unsure about his FPL potential.

      a) The 4-2-3-1 looks the obvious solution, but it's clear that AVB favors 4-3-3. Signing Eriksen proves to me, that he believes 4-2-3-1 could be the solution for Spurs, and is at least willing to try. Really don't think Spurs would have signed Eriksen for the role of a winger

      b) ----------------------Lloris---------------------
Walker, Dawson/Kaboul/Vlad, Vertonghen, Rose/New Left Back
      -------------Paulinho, Capoue/Sandro-------------
      ---------Lennon/Townsend, Eriksen, Lamela------///Holtby, Dembele, Siggy
      --------------------Soldado--------------------

      c) Not sure...But I really think it will be Lamela and Soldado that would be worth having from Spurs. Not Paulinho or Eriksen (not nailed on)

Agree about waiting and watching on anyone other than Lamela and Soldado.

Lamela has to be a regular starter, but when that will be is not known.

If i had Paulinho id probably get rid of him personally. The reason I got Dembele was because he can operate higher up, is likely to play, but most of all is a good cheap option that you could even leave as your first sub

Replied to a similar post about our midfield above. But the fact is I think anyone that gives you an answer is purely guessing.

Think of it as a (potentially good) risk having spurs players right now as pretty much any of them could be rotated until the big players start becoming hard to drop

I don't see any reason not to keep going 4-3-3. He's got lots of talent in the central midfield, Pamela will nail down one wing and the others can fight over the other wing. I can see one or two faces leaving Spurs before the window closes.

Roscola, the difference between 4-3-3 and 4-2-3-1 is to some extent moot. It may change the way the wider players act, especially going backwards but you end up with a central 3 either way. The Mousse has been slotted in at the apex of a triangle completed by Pauly and Capoue so far, and I would expect that to be the case vs Gooners, but personal clearly subject to change.

Lamela is most likely to get games wide right with potential to go outside for crosses but more likely inside for passes./shots, much like Andros with his strong left-foot shooting. Aaron would still be likely to go outside for crossing. Chadli can also go both ways, he's largely a right-footer.

Eriksen hasn't signed, but assuming he does, he could get games at top of Mid triangle or pushed wide left. AVB has shown he's happy to play a less pacey LM, a la Siggy, although it's not been terribly effective so far.

As for Pauly, he's been our most advanced mid on many occasions, with Lamps-like late bursts that have rewarded with a goal so far. I see him getting more, perhaps as many as 10-12 this season across all comps.

Conclusion is, loads of options both in personnel and tactics. Expect all of the above to play plenty, but that's the problem from FPL prospective, predicting line-ups from game to game will be difficult, much like Chelsea/Citeh.

      Hope that helps.

Very well explained....I wanted to say that 4-2-3-1 is almost a variant of 4-3-3, but would not have been able to explain it half as well.

What a day for us Spurs fan. 🙂

Yeah Pratik. I keep hearing 'Glory, glory Tottenham Hotspur..' as it sounds ringing out through that lame Lane PA system... exciting times indeed.

In fairness, been a very good 5-6 years all in all, and I remember to hand credit to Jol, he got the balling rolling in the right direction with regular 5th spots and nearly a 4th.

Just the one nagging doubt, can this team really be as exciting to watch and it was with Gareth? I hope so.

Thanks for the compliment RE: above. 🙂
