Sunderland’s Steven Fletcher smells goals. Mauricio Pochettino looks to preserve his young full-back. Phil Jones could force a change in the United rearguard. Etienne Capoue’s injury halts the Spurs revolution, while Fulham’s Bryan Ruiz settles for a role on the flank.

Fletcher Promises Goals

Sunderland striker Steven Fletcher is keen to make up for lost time and add to the goal he scored on his comeback at the weekend. The Scottish striker returned in Sunday’s 3-1 defeat against Crystal Palace to notch after a five-month spell on the sidelines.

Fletcher has vowed to mimic his scoring spree on arriving in the North East which saw him notch five times in his first four starts for the Black Cats, whilst looking to establish a strike partnership with new recruit Jozy Altidore.

“Obviously we need goals in the team and if I can bring that, then that’s what I love to do. Jozy Altidore was out of the team on Saturday, it was disappointing that he was injured. But hopefully we can do well together.”

The Scout Says: Priced at just 7.4m in the FPL game Fletcher could be a potential bargain if, as he clearly hopes, he can emulate his previous goalscoring form. The fixture list is hardly kind to Sunderland and Fletcher, however, handing them meetings with Arsenal, Liverpool and United at the Stadium of Light in the next four Gameweeks. While Fletcher has remarked on a potential partnership with Altidore, the arrival of Fabio Borini in the transfer window casts doubt over that pairing with the former Liverpool and Swansea striker set to challenge for starts. Fantasy managers will surely be keeping their distance, given the schedule, in order to assess how Paolo Di Canio’s much changed lineup settles down.

Moyes Unsure On Jones Injury

While there are a string of the usual pre-international “injuries”, United’s Phil Jones looks a genuine concern ahead of Gameweek 4. Deployed at right-back for United’s opening fixtures with Rafael sidelined due to a hamstring problem, Jones was forced off with an ankle complaint in the 1-0 defeat at Anfield after 37 minutes. David Moyes gave little detail on the extent of the injury post-match as Jones was immediately withdrawn from England’s qualifiers.

The Scout Says: While Jones will be targeting a centre-back role this term, he has settled at right-back in the absence of Rafael. Fantasy managers have, to this point, ignored the United backline but with fixtures improving considerably in the coming Gameweeks, Jones and his rearguard team-mates are set to arrive on our radars. To this point, Moyes has played the same defensive quartet in each match – pairing Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic in the centre with Patrice Evra at left-back. With Jones a potential absentee for the home clash with Palace and Rafael still struggling, we could now see Chris Smalling earn a start. Smalling is available for just 5.3 and would be a clear short-term option for the Gameweek.

Spurs Lose Capoue For A Month

Tottenham’s defensive midfielder Etienne Capoue faces four weeks on the sidelines after suffering an ankle sprain against Arsenal on Sunday. The recent signing from Toulouse was taken to hospital to see an ankle specialist immediately after being substituted after 72 minutes.

The Scout SaysCapoue’s absence will be a blow to manager Andre Villas-Boas’ rebuilding programme at the Lane. After impressing on his full debut against Swansea, the French international looked to be building an effective midfield three with Brazilian Paulinho and Mousa Dembele. Sandro’s return from a long injury lay off gives Villas Boas a ready-made replacement, however, as mentioned in yesterdays “This Much We Know”, with both Christian Eriksen and Eric Lamela now available as options, a re-shuffle in formation, as well as personnel, looks on the cards. It could be a few weeks before Fantasy managers can be sure on just how the Spurs lineup will settle, allowing for an assessment of the options on offer.

Pochettino Keen to Protect Shaw

Mauricio Pochettino has stated that he wants left-back Luke Shaw to withdraw from England’s Unuder-21 squad as doubts over his fitness continues. Shaw was only fit enough for the bench for the trip to Norwich with Danny Fox given the nod in the Saints defence.

The Scout Says After making a sparkling first start at West Brom, Shaw’s early season has been derailed by a knee injury. He was withdrawn in the 1-1 draw with Sunderland and was preserved at Carrow Road at the weekend. Pochettino is clearly keen to wrap Shaw in cotton wool in preparation for the home clash with West Ham which is a good sign for the left-back’s Fantasy owners frustrated by his recent lack of pitch time. Shaw earned almost 150,000 new owners prior to Gameweek 2 with his price rising to 4.7.

Ruiz Happy With Right Wing Role

Fulham’s Bryan Ruiz is hoping to secure a starting XI place after shifting to the right wing to accommodate new on-loan striker Darren Bent. The Costa Rican international was handed his first start of the season against Newcastle at the weekend in a new look attacking line up, as Dimitar Berbatov supported Bent with Alex Kacaniklic on the left flank. Whilst Ruiz was targeting more goals prior to this season, he seems more than happy deployed out wide:

“I was pleased to be back in the first XI but I need to get my rhythm and play more minutes. That will get my confidence up 100 per cent. I felt comfortable on the right, I am happy to play there and I saw a lot of the ball.”

The Scout Says: Cottagers boss Martin Jol will be hoping the acquisition of Bent will at last give Fulham the attacking verve they have missed, arguably since Clint Dempsey departed. While Ruiz’s versatility to play on the right of midfield is set to significantly improve his playing time given this new competition from Bent, it severely dents his Fantasy potential as it makes him a reverse out of position prospect. It also remains to be seen whether this is a line up Jol persists with given Fulham’s lacklustre display. Fulham’s fixtures in the weeks to come suggest that Jol’s side may emerge as a source of mid-price talent. Three favourable home matches with West Brom, Cardiff and Stoke give Fulham the opportunity to kick-start their season, with Bent potentially establishing himself as a Fantasy target up front. The Villa loanee can be acquired for just 6.5 in the FPL.

I think Ozil will get more assists, Cazorla will get more goals. Cazorla will likely be on right footed free-kicks, Ozil on left footed ones. Cazorla will take left corner free kicks, and I imagine Walcott will take the other side.

if he plays it will be more of a wide attacker than a midfielder so likely to be very attacking. However with Sturridge and Suarez taking two of those three roles (when Suarez is back) you're likely to see Moses fighting Aspas and Sterling for that third and final place.

If he nails down that spot he could be a bargain, if not he'll share minutes with the other two and might not offer such good returns.

I had the same concern over the preseason but what you don't get is that he's scored as many goals as anyone in 2013, and Villa have become an above average offensive team. They're way better than I gave them credit for, could easily finish in the top half of the table IMO. With Sturridge/Giroud/Soldado/Negredo at the same price I'm not going for him, but he is one of the safer options in the game.

Last night I was contemplating doing Mirallas -> Brady and Jrod -> Giroud as I could just afford it. Decided to wait because of internationals, hadn`t 100% decided on it etc.

Jrod dropped last night so it`s too late now. However, in one of the windows in my browser I had the transfers done while Jrod was still 6.0 (Now he`s 5.9). So I tried to push the confirm button just for the fun of it.

The transfers went through! I was shocked. It said FT 0, Bank -0.1. Should have taken a screenshot of it.. because 2 minutes later the transfers were reversed. Known "bug" or not? I found it a bit "scary" and funny 🙂

One of the problems I've seen watching Spurs so far is them not having anyone who can take a dead-ball (very well). I'm sure he'll be on most free-kicks and corners. Lamela took a few corners when he came on in NDL.

He's become very reliable with direct free-kicks recently, scored a fair few in the last 6 months of his time here. Really don't rate his corners though

Two goals were scored from his corners in his last game for us. Most fans think we're dire with set pieces, but we score quite a few goals from them and Eriksen took pretty much all of them.

Keep Hazard. and utilise the rest .7 . coz Ozil is going to feed walcott with all his special through balls. wait for a week or 2.

Not at all. I would go for Vidic or Merte over Zab though. Just better fixtures and City look weaker without Kompany. A CS is worth more than an assist.

I really like Sakho at 5.5 and Eriksen at 8.0 😀

If Eriksen proves to be a good FPL option, he will come for Silva and Soldado will become Benteke 😀

that averages out to 1 goal every 5 games and 1 assist every 2.5 games... Translates to around 7 goals and 14 or so assists a season in a league where bony for eg. scored 31 in 30!! not good

Bony's 3 years older and stats improve as they get older, or maybe Eriksen made the big move a bit too soon

You can divide those numbers by 3 for a player when he moves from Holland to England. The rule works for almost every player who's ever made the move (for their first season). The exception to that rule is van Nistelrooy.

It's a pretty hard and fast rule that scouts use when signing from abroad using tools like scout7. Have a look at suarez's stats for this first 6 months in the prem. Unless you're planning on drafting him in for the next 3 years that is.

This whole lot are unlikely to make my side.

    Willian
    Ozil
    Eriksen

    None really score enough.
    All wait and see types.

    Eto'o
    Lamela

Could be good but not guaranteed games just yet.

On one hand, all are risky still.
But at the same time, if you pick the right one early, excellent differential with value building potential.

Finally though. Someone at 8-8.5 mid range woryh considering. Mirallas to Eriksen very tempting tbh.

I am contemplating a wildcard at the moment and have been looking at Mesut Ozil's stats to see if he is worth the inclusion. Here are a few stats that I think are useful. Sorry for the long post.

49 - Starts for club and country 2009/2010
    11 - Goals
    20 - Assists
60 - Starts for club and country 2010/2011
    12 - Goals
    31 - Assists
54 - Starts for club and country 2011/2012
    13 - Goals
    26 - Assists
59 - Starts for club and country in 2012/2013
    16 - Goals
35 - Assists (are you getting a sense that there might be a pattern?*)

222 - Total starts in the last 4 years (55.5 per season)
    52 - Goals (13 per season)
    112 - Assists (28 per season)
72 - League assists for Özil in the last 5 seasons, more than any other player in the top five leagues in Europe (@orbinho)

353 - Chances created from open play in that time, also tops all players in Europe (@orbinho)
92 - Key passes in la Liga last season (2nd in la Liga)
13 – Assists in la Liga last season (2nd in la Liga)
84 - Average passing in la Liga % last season
1.3 - Crosses per game in la Liga last season
0.5 - Through balls per game in La Liga last season
33 - Dribbles successful last season (47% rate)

If we take out the international games and the cup matches and just focus on Liga and Champions League play we can compare Özil to other top creative midfielders thus:

Champions League Plus League Play Numbers
Ozil 2013 Ozil 2012 Ozil 2011 Fabregas Mata Ribery Cazorla
    Minutes 2743 3364 3345 2831 3658 2957 3918
    Starts 31 40 39 36 41 35 44
    Goals 10 6 7 12 16 11 12
    Assists 17 20 24 11 19 16 12
    KP 121 134 158 50 140 105 105
    KP/90 3.97 3.59 4.25 1.59 3.44 3.20 2.41

As you can clearly see, Özil is one of the most creative players in world football. But more impressive is that he has maintained that high level for four years staying consistently in the top of both leagues for assists and chances created.

The one place where people say Özil needs to improve is shooting but at Real Madrid he didn’t get many shots because he was too busy creating for others: Özil took exactly 100 shots for Real Madrid in league play and scored 19 goals. That’s 33 shots per season and just 6 goals for an average of 5.5 shots per goal and a finishing rate of 18%. It’s really not that bad at all.Consider as comparison, Cazorla took 115 shots for Arsenal in the League last year and scored just 12 goals. That’s an average of 9.5 shots per goal and a finishing rate of just 10%.

Özil’s career up until now shows a player who is not selfish with shots and would rather create for others, so what we should hope for is a situation like Chelsea with Mata and Hazard who combined for 160 key passes and 133 shots (47% of Chelsea’s output). Between Özil and Cazorla I think there is a very strong probability of seeing exactly those kinds of numbers — both international superstars running the Arsenal offense at the same time and getting each other shots, getting Giroud shots, and getting Theo shots.

As a arsenal fan, I am very excited to say the least.

Ozil will get into the box more than Cazorla. Between the 2 of them for 10m there's a clear winner. I still think Wally and Giroud will benefit the most. He won't keep up those numbers in the Prem. our teams know how to defend. I reckon we're looking at about 20 assists and 5 goals. For PL alone that might be translated to 15 assists and 3 goals. I think Lamps will outscore him under the new bonus point system.
