Sunderland’s Steven Fletcher smells goals. Mauricio Pochettino looks to preserve his young full-back. Phil Jones could force a change in the United rearguard. Etienne Capoue’s injury halts the Spurs revolution, while Fulham’s Bryan Ruiz settles for a role on the flank.

Fletcher Promises Goals

Sunderland striker Steven Fletcher is keen to make up for lost time and add to the goal he scored on his comeback at the weekend. The Scottish striker returned in Sunday’s 3-1 defeat against Crystal Palace to notch after a five-month spell on the sidelines.

Fletcher has vowed to mimic his scoring spree on arriving in the North East which saw him notch five times in his first four starts for the Black Cats, whilst looking to establish a strike partnership with new recruit Jozy Altidore.

“Obviously we need goals in the team and if I can bring that, then that’s what I love to do. Jozy Altidore was out of the team on Saturday, it was disappointing that he was injured. But hopefully we can do well together.”

The Scout Says: Priced at just 7.4m in the FPL game Fletcher could be a potential bargain if, as he clearly hopes, he can emulate his previous goalscoring form. The fixture list is hardly kind to Sunderland and Fletcher, however, handing them meetings with Arsenal, Liverpool and United at the Stadium of Light in the next four Gameweeks. While Fletcher has remarked on a potential partnership with Altidore, the arrival of Fabio Borini in the transfer window casts doubt over that pairing with the former Liverpool and Swansea striker set to challenge for starts. Fantasy managers will surely be keeping their distance, given the schedule, in order to assess how Paolo Di Canio’s much changed lineup settles down.

Moyes Unsure On Jones Injury

While there are a string of the usual pre-international “injuries”, United’s Phil Jones looks a genuine concern ahead of Gameweek 4. Deployed at right-back for United’s opening fixtures with Rafael sidelined due to a hamstring problem, Jones was forced off with an ankle complaint in the 1-0 defeat at Anfield after 37 minutes. David Moyes gave little detail on the extent of the injury post-match as Jones was immediately withdrawn from England’s qualifiers.

The Scout Says: While Jones will be targeting a centre-back role this term, he has settled at right-back in the absence of Rafael. Fantasy managers have, to this point, ignored the United backline but with fixtures improving considerably in the coming Gameweeks, Jones and his rearguard team-mates are set to arrive on our radars. To this point, Moyes has played the same defensive quartet in each match – pairing Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic in the centre with Patrice Evra at left-back. With Jones a potential absentee for the home clash with Palace and Rafael still struggling, we could now see Chris Smalling earn a start. Smalling is available for just 5.3 and would be a clear short-term option for the Gameweek.

Spurs Lose Capoue For A Month

Tottenham’s defensive midfielder Etienne Capoue faces four weeks on the sidelines after suffering an ankle sprain against Arsenal on Sunday. The recent signing from Toulouse was taken to hospital to see an ankle specialist immediately after being substituted after 72 minutes.

The Scout SaysCapoue’s absence will be a blow to manager Andre Villas-Boas’ rebuilding programme at the Lane. After impressing on his full debut against Swansea, the French international looked to be building an effective midfield three with Brazilian Paulinho and Mousa Dembele. Sandro’s return from a long injury lay off gives Villas Boas a ready-made replacement, however, as mentioned in yesterdays “This Much We Know”, with both Christian Eriksen and Eric Lamela now available as options, a re-shuffle in formation, as well as personnel, looks on the cards. It could be a few weeks before Fantasy managers can be sure on just how the Spurs lineup will settle, allowing for an assessment of the options on offer.

Pochettino Keen to Protect Shaw

Mauricio Pochettino has stated that he wants left-back Luke Shaw to withdraw from England’s Unuder-21 squad as doubts over his fitness continues. Shaw was only fit enough for the bench for the trip to Norwich with Danny Fox given the nod in the Saints defence.

The Scout Says After making a sparkling first start at West Brom, Shaw’s early season has been derailed by a knee injury. He was withdrawn in the 1-1 draw with Sunderland and was preserved at Carrow Road at the weekend. Pochettino is clearly keen to wrap Shaw in cotton wool in preparation for the home clash with West Ham which is a good sign for the left-back’s Fantasy owners frustrated by his recent lack of pitch time. Shaw earned almost 150,000 new owners prior to Gameweek 2 with his price rising to 4.7.

Ruiz Happy With Right Wing Role

Fulham’s Bryan Ruiz is hoping to secure a starting XI place after shifting to the right wing to accommodate new on-loan striker Darren Bent. The Costa Rican international was handed his first start of the season against Newcastle at the weekend in a new look attacking line up, as Dimitar Berbatov supported Bent with Alex Kacaniklic on the left flank. Whilst Ruiz was targeting more goals prior to this season, he seems more than happy deployed out wide:

“I was pleased to be back in the first XI but I need to get my rhythm and play more minutes. That will get my confidence up 100 per cent. I felt comfortable on the right, I am happy to play there and I saw a lot of the ball.”

The Scout Says: Cottagers boss Martin Jol will be hoping the acquisition of Bent will at last give Fulham the attacking verve they have missed, arguably since Clint Dempsey departed. While Ruiz’s versatility to play on the right of midfield is set to significantly improve his playing time given this new competition from Bent, it severely dents his Fantasy potential as it makes him a reverse out of position prospect. It also remains to be seen whether this is a line up Jol persists with given Fulham’s lacklustre display. Fulham’s fixtures in the weeks to come suggest that Jol’s side may emerge as a source of mid-price talent. Three favourable home matches with West Brom, Cardiff and Stoke give Fulham the opportunity to kick-start their season, with Bent potentially establishing himself as a Fantasy target up front. The Villa loanee can be acquired for just 6.5 in the FPL.

Does RVP now restrict a side even more?

Given the big hitting striker and mids options just gained a pile of names, some below 9m, the options and flexibility are getting ridiculous in that range.

I had set cash aside for him this week.
Still doing that instead of wildcard just yet.

But after Palace at home, the Wildcard might be tempting once I've seen who actually starts and where.

Wildcard this week is schoolboy stuff I think.
Its like pre season gambling all over again.
    unless you're desperate of course.

WC now just to take advantage of new additions to the league might be schoolboy stuff, but for many it also involves bringing in players who have already made good starts to the season and look like good long term picks - failing to get them in now might mean they are too expensive by the time you have surveyed the shiny new additions.

My plan was always to bring RVP in this week but I would need at least an 8 point hit to do it.

Now it comes to it, it's clear that he restricts you from having a decent spead premium defenders and 9m-ish strikers, all of whom are doing well.

I'm swaying away from getting him in. Sturridge, Giroud, Benteke, Soldado all great options and allow for a much stonger defence for me.

I wouldn't have done Mira lambert to benteke Brady for -8 but you have starts that path may as well finish it.

Not a Totteham fan, but AVB likes to play high lines with fairly mobile center backs who are ideally good on the ball too.

The fact that Dawson appears a bit slow and off the pace; and with some quarters saying he was culpable for the goal mean his days are probably numbered. Excpect two of Vertonghen, Chiriches and Kaboul to start most games.

The only thing is, AVB could've already gone with Kaboul and hasn't. I get the feeling AVB likes having a traditional English CB in there who is a leader, will give everything for the cause and is a big part of the club, in the same way Terry and Lamps are for Chelsea.

Ah - I didn't know about that, cheers. I thought Dawson was on his way to QPR last year. My suggestion was from a purely tactical perspective. Kaboul is coming back from a very long layoff and the talk last season was he was always going to be first choice as center back.

I guess just shows you how much of a bargain Liverpool have got. The only thing I can think of is that he's nailed on at L'pool and they've noted this, whereas Eriksen and Willian have a lot more competition in there team than L'pool.

There is that, he also had that crazy run if points at the end of last season which affect his price. He will score more points than William and Erik this season. I agree he is over priced but looking at the price tag is a stupid argument to say a player Gould be more or less expensive.

Coutinho would go for almost triple what Pool got for him now. They were lucky to get him at that price.

Willian at 8.5 is a bad buy IMO. Wouldn't go near a new chelsea attacking mid/winger.

What Buc's said. In all honesty once Dawson stops playing a different line to everyone else, I think Tottenham may start keeping a few cleanies. Their back 4 is much better than it used to be, and Lloris is a world class keeper.

Buy Giroud. I would prefer Ozil. The same price but I think he is the better player, and is more likely to play behind the forward. I have a feeling Santi will oust Podolski on the left, because he is a more flexible player, although I could be wrong.

      Or c. buy Giroud?
Despite Ozil's incredible assists record I'm waiting & seeing if he will be the guy that plays the perfect through ball for Walcott to centre it into the path of Giroud bundling it home from 3 yards out, roughly.

Regarding the Eriksen v Lamela debate, Eriksen - 33 league games 10 goals 13 assists (£1m less), Lamela 33 league games 15 goals 5 assists (in a tougher league). I am swaying to Lamela but think its hard to split. Anyone think Eriksen has less competition for places?

I think Eriksen is almost guaranteed the spot behind Soldado. Near in mind that Lamela played in a better league, and therefore an argument could be made for a better team. Eriksen ran the show for his club.

Hs played up top, so could give Crouch competition up there and be a good oop prospect, but was mostly fielded one the right.
One to watch out for? Apparently a young talent that is quite lazy.

I saw somebody write 'nothing is worth a -8 hit'.

The lad was already on -4 and think Benteke will outscore Lambert by more than 4. Why would you not do this if that is the case, surely hits can be made if you think the person you are bringing in will outscore the outgoing player by 4 or more?

Too many things have to go right for a -8 to work out.

But of course saying "nothing is worth a -8 hit" was a slight exaggeration.

Not something I'd ever consider, even if I couldn't field 11.

A hit of any number of points can be worth it, theoretically. The chance that your net points gain will outweigh the hit simply becomes more remote, the more you take. Risky, but who dares wins.

Not with the runs he has been making, he has been unlucky not to score so far. If he keeps doing what he has been, he will find the back of the net soon enough.

    RMT
    Mignolet (K.Davis)
    Coleman Zabaleta Enrique Gabiddon Whittaker
    Toure Walcott Hazard Colback Ward-Prowse
    Giroud Sturridge Negredo
1.1 mil in bank, WC active

I'm stuck in a dilemma, I want to definitely bring in Ozil as I feel he will hit the ground running and combine that with Arsenal's decent fixture list, I would like to have 3 arsenal players on my team (walcott, ozil, giroud). Question is who do I drop, do I drop Hazard who I strongly feel will eventually shine and become a must have in the near future or do I drop Toure? Attackers wise, I am thinking that the Stoke game will be low scoring and city's fixtures thereafter don't look too promising, and am thinking should I reinstate Spurs or bring in Benteke for the game vs Newcastle and switch him out for Soldado the following week? Thoughts?

    Thanks!
