Wayne Rooney goes public with pictures of the head injury that casts major question marks over his availability for United’s game with Palace. Phil Bardsley returns to the Sunderland frame after the Black Cars lift the right-back’s suspension, Aaron Ramsey is the subject of Arsene Wenger’s praise, while Ian Holloway omits a couple of new signings from Palace’s 25-man squad for the season ahead:

Rooney Reveals Horror Show Injury

Wayne Rooney has taken to Facebook to reveal the extent of his head injury that will keep him out of England’s qualifiers with Moldova and Ukraine. The grizzly picture of Rooney’s head wound, suffered in a training ground collision with team-mate Phil Jones, was accompanied with a statement from the United forward explaining his withdrawal from Roy Hodgson’s squad.

“Some people seem to be questioning my commitment to the England squad and the fact I had to pull out of the two games. There’s nothing I would like more than to be helping the lads in the qualifiers. I’m sure people will see from these images the reason why I won’t be able to play.”

The Scout Says: Hardly pleasant viewing, it’s nonetheless clear from the images that Rooney’s injury is far from straightforward. Described by Theo Walcott as “like something from a horror film”, the severity of the wound will surely delay Rooney’s return to action and make him a real doubt for United’s Gameweek 4 home clash with Crystal Palace. Those considering Rooney as a viable altnerative to cover Robin van Persie’s potential against Ian Holloway’s side will likely have to set their sights elsewhere. While there is no confirmed length of absence, investment in Rooney as a Fantasy option has stalled until we know more.

Bardsley Back in the Black Cats Fold

Phil Bardsley has had his suspension lifted by Sunderland. Disciplinary action was taken against the defender after he appeared to mock his team-mates following the opening day defeat to Fulham via his Instagram account. Bardsley was subsequently suspended from playing duties but has now acknowledged his actions and looks set to focuse on a return to first team duties.

“I would like to apologise to the club and supporters for my comments made on social media. I understand how they may have been interpreted. I accept the punishment that has been handed to me by the football club and will now focus my attention and efforts on rehabilitation and regaining my fitness.”

The Scout Says: With new signing, Ondrej Celustka, settled at right-back so far this term, Bardsley faces an uphill struggle to edge his way into contention for a recall. Having said that, it’s always difficult to anticipate Paolo Di Canio’s thinking when it comes to his teamsheet, having witnessed wholesale changes over the opening Gameweeks. Celustka, at just 4.5 in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) is currently a cheap route into the Sunderland rearguard but short-term investment is very unlikely given current form and, more significantly, a schedule that brings Arsenal, Liverpool and United to the Stadium of Light over the next four Gameweeks.

Ramsey Earns Praise as Diaby Steps Up Recovery

Arsene Wenger has switched attention away from new signing Mesut Ozil to focus on, arguably, Arsenal’s most accomplished performer this season, Aaron Ramsey. The Gunners boss has acknowledged Ramsey’s form, highlighting an increase in strength and finishing ability as the key components to his progress:

“He [Ramsey] has gained a lot of physical power in the last year, no longer struggling in challenges and duels but brushing opponents off and running away from them with ease. It’s a great feeling for a midfielder to do that. On top of that, he’s starting to score – something I always felt he was close to doing because he was often the next guy in the box. To have that in your locker as well is fantastic.”

Abou Diaby is another Arsenal midfielder in the news as he has broken his silence following a lengthy spell on the sidelines after suffering a cruciate knee ligament injury back in March. Diaby has now stepped up his recovery and is looking ahead to knocking on the first team door.

“I’m working back to my best level and beyond. I want to catch the train and bring something to the team. That’s my objective.”

The Scout Says: Ozil’s arrival offers an obvious new asset in the Arsenal ranks, although Fantasy managers also need to assess the impact he will have on the players around him. Ramsey, in particular, could remain a midfield option and, with a 5.6 FPL price tag, would certainly warrant interest in a side boosted in confidence and scoring goals. It remains to be seen how Ozil’s arrival will impact on his starts. With MIkel Arteta’s return from injury and Jack Wilshere fully fit, Wenger would clearly have a wealth of options in the middle of the park. Certainly, Diaby’s ambitions may have to be tempered. It’s difficult to see an immediate route back into the side for the Frenchman.

Palace Omit New Signings

Crystal Palace have named their 25-man squad for the Premier League campaign, omitting summer signings, Stephen Dobbie and Florian Marange along with Aaron Wilbraham and Owen Garvan. The latter had started the previous three matches prior to the Sunderland victory, while Marange was yet to figure in the league following his summer move from Bordeaux. Ian Holloway signed 16 players during this recent transfer window.

The Scout Says: With so many new faces arriving at Selhurst Park, including what seemed a deadline day scramble, it’s perhaps not surprising to see names culled from the 25-man squad. Holloway’s options, particularly in wide areas, looks bewildering and it’s incredibly difficult to assess what his likely first choice starting XI will be. Fantasy managers who have already invested in Palace as a source of budget talent can now only sit back and hope that their assets remains intact but, with competition for starts all over the pitch, it’s clear it will take a number of weeks before we can run the rule over Palace’s potential with any real certainty. It’s worth noting that Under 21 players – such as Jonathan Williams – are available for selection over and above the 25-man limit; hence the youngster’s omission from the list.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

He is. He scored two away against a better side than Palace. He's had two quiet games and now I fully expect him to destroy Palace. He's my captain and you won't get a better opportunity all year to really put some space between yourself and the non RVP owners who've convinced themselves that Soldado, Giroud and Benteke are better strikers than RVP.

I don't think anyone has convinced themselves that any of them are better strikers. The fact that they are 5m cheaper is the reason people don't have RVP.

Average ratings so far from whoscored.com. Members stats not included (mostly because I don’t know how!)
    Delph AVL CM 7.74
    Dikgacoi CPL CM 6.65
Jedinak CPL CM 8.1 forward for corners
Ward-Prowse SOU LW 7.17 Takes corners.

    Livemore HUL CM 6.54
    Parker FUL CDM 6.75
Quinn (4.4) HUL RW 6.35 Will he regain his spot though?

Colback has new competition at LB for Sunderland and Lucas of Liverpool will get 1-3 pts and has rotational issues. Barkley also has new competition.

If there’s any other players I should look at please say. Similarly, are there reasons not to include any of these players?

Like the strike force. Pretty much optimal.
I think in Coutinho and Silva you have 2 assister mids and I think I'd prefer Hernandez/Michu and Lamela (assuming he performs as widely expected). If you went for Hernandez you could play him upto GW17 and then rotate him with Kim too. Ivanovic's fixtures aren't great - think I'd prefer Vidic.

      Overall though Pratik, it's decent.

Don't know why the Champions League game gets so much stick on here?
Worked perfectly for me last year, and was a great bit of fun watching the games midweek in college with the lads in the house with which I set up a league.
    I've come up with

    Diego Lopez (Courtois)
Mangala - Boateng - Maxi Perrera (Uchida - Juanfran)
    Isco - Draxler - Hazard - Ribery - Pogba
    Balotelli - Giroud (Aubameyang)

I reccomend giving it a whirl, it's a relaxing removal from the stress of being one of the few not wildcarding on the international break

But It's only a bit of fun and I'll try go without them, plus it makes picking a defence a bit easier.

Good keeper, good forwards, maybe too much spent there. Defence is too dependant on Arsenal CS. Midfield too dependendant on Walcott. Nolan will get you points, Ben Arfa inconsistent and injury-prone. Hernandez is popular based on just 3 games when other Swans attackers were average. Downgrade Sturridge or Benteke, better still downgrade Van Persie (FFS sacrilege!) and upgrade MIDs and rejig defence.

    Classic example of the fickle-ness of FFS/FPL;

Silva was the top dog last week, his first blank in 3 games and now he is a poor option and nobody wants him.

    Ahh.

So true. But I'm part of that fickleness. He was great at £9m but a no go at £9.4 because you could get Walcott for a bit more and imo Coutinho will now be better value at £9m.

Any thoughts on this weeks transfer would be a huge help.
Personally I'm not too keen on taking a -4.
    Team at present is

    Vorm - Boruc
    Coleman - Reid - Turner - Chester - **Toure
Walcott - Lampard - Ward Prowse - Kim - **Mirallas
    RVP - Sturridge - Soldado

Basically, I want rid of Toure and Mirallas
Is it worth the hit to get rid of them in one go, or take it one at a time.
Consider, I can downgrade Mirallas to Barfa and get an Arsenal defender for Toure if I take the hit. If not It'll be Collocini etc.
Sorry for the longish ''help-required'' post.. Any thoughts?

Funny, I'm in the same boat with Dzeko to add to those 2!

I'd look at HBA for Mirallas. As for Toure, can you stretch to an arsenal re?

Mirallas out for a hit doesn't make sense IMO.

Wait until after the internationals. No doubt a more major problem will arrise.

How do you feel a bout your defence if you save the transfer?

I'm happy with Reid, Turner Chester and Coleman.. I know heavy defence is doing well.. but they're not exactly doing badly either.
I am considering doing Mirallas - Hernandez to bring in Zaba/Walker for Toure though.
Can't see Mirallas scoring, his fixtures get harder from now - and Deloefau could threaten his game time. He was a worthwhile punt from the start, his form pointed towards good returns. I'm not sure I trust him having seen the last few games

Fair, Pablo is a good shout I reckon. Def wise I don't know if city are the way to go. They llook lost on sp's and no Kompany for the short term makes me want to steer clear. Walker would be the better shout imo

I would consider saving the FT if you are happy with your back 3 this week.

Mirallas has threatened, and could still score reasonably well. Don't forget, at 7.5m, you don't need him to score every week to be good value.

No idea how Moyes will go about this given he has never had a squad that could rotate much (if Man United even counts as one?)

Wouldn't be surprised if he played them all. Also wouldn't be surprised to see him miss one or two. Who knows.

want to make a point regarding assists being worthless for bonus.

for midfielders yes. for defenders the opposite. we've seen with agger, zabaleta, enrique and luke shaw for example that these 3 points are the vital nudge which elevates one defender over another. the other factors like passing and tackles/blocks/clearances seem to seperate by 1 or 2 points, the assist then usually trumps.

this then creates an interesting dilemma. do you go for a centre back for an easier route to pass and clearances/blocks bonus, or do you go for the full back who on paper is always more likely to assist.

CBs is the safer option IMO as they are also more likely to get baps on tied points (e.g. when 3 players are awarded the 1 or 2 pts).
