Daniel Sturridge fails to recover from a thigh problem and is out of England’s upcoming match with Ukraine. Luis Suarez bags a brace for Uruguay, Victor Moses is amongst the goals for Nigeria, while David Luiz and Ramires feature for Brazil as Oscar misses out with an ankle knock:

Sturridge Out of Ukraine Match

Daniel Sturridge’s Fantasy owners were given further reason for concern after the forward was
ruled out of England’s qualifier against Ukraine on Tuesday evening. The Liverpool man has failed to recover in time from the thigh problem that had been bothering him prior to last weekend’s win over United and yesterday’s news will raise question marks over his availability for the Reds’ next league fixture away to Swansea.

The Scout Says: Although the Gameweek 4 trip to the Liberty doesn’t take place until Monday September 16, Sturridge’s propensity for picking up injuries is a real concern. Last season, he was sidelined at Chelsea with a hamstring injury, while a groin strain hampered his number of starts with the Merseysiders. Frustratingly, this comes at a time where he’s turning in the most prolific performances of his career – grabbing the match-winner in each of the first three league matches. With an enticing run of games up next for Brendan Rodgers’ side, the bandwagon was in overdrive but has now comes to a standstill on the back of his omission – given that Luis Suarez is back for Gameweek 6, Rodgers may decide to take it easy with Sturridge in order to prevent further injury. The arrival of Victor Moses could also see Iago Aspas pushed into the lone forward role, with Philippe Coutinho switching from the left flank into “the hole” behind Aspas, should Rodgers choose to court caution. Both Suarez and Moses were in action last night for their international sides and the duo found the net – Moses grabbed Nigeria’s second against Malawai while Suarez notched both Uruguay’s goals in a win away to Peru.

Luiz and Ramires Star for Samba Boys

Chelsea pair Ramires and David Luiz both featured in Brazil’s 6-0 drubbing over Australia. Ramires, in the side for the injured Oscar, got himself on the scoresheet and earned an assist, while Luiz came through an hour before being replaced.

The Scout Says: Having started in the Super Cup clash with Bayern Munich, Luiz would now see firmly in the frame to figure in Jose Mourinho’s Premier League lineup when domestic matters reconvene for Gameweek 4’s trip to Everton. It was John Terry who made way against Bayern and it remains to be seen how Mourinho will juggle his defence come Saturday’s tea-time kick-off. Luiz would seem set to figure in Brazil’s friendly with Portugal on Tuesday before flying back to join up with the Blues’ squad. He has dropped to 6.3 from 6.5 in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, representing a viable saving for the 31% who currently hold Branislav Ivanovic. Terry, meanwhile, is owed by over 5% of FPL managers who will doubtless be looking to the Goodison teamsheet with some trepidation. However, having been fully rested over the break, Terry could well be restored against the Toffees with both Gary Cahill and Luiz seeing minutes for their respective countries. Meanwhile, Oscar’s reported ankle injury, reportedly sustained in training with Brazil, will make him an early doubt for Saturday’s clash – perhaps opening the door for Juan Mata’s first league start of the season.

How do you feel about this as a WC team without RVP?

      Mig/Harper

      Vidic/Coleman/Zabaletta/Chester/Shaw

      Benteke/Soldado/Giroud

Nice. I like it. Nani is a nice 1 week punt that could become Arfa/Nolan.

Appar Vidic might be rotated for CL games. I personally prefer Michu over Hernandez. Cout could turn into Michu around gw 8.

Not much in the 6m midf range though as replacement for Hernandez. Taraabt is prob to risky.

The plan is to move Cout to Michu in GW8.

A bit worried about Taarabt, so I wil monitor the Hernandez sitch.

Well last time he played he got injured badly. Given he has finally lasted 4 matches (including pre-season) + scored in each one he probably doesn't need to risk it.

He managed 95 minutes vs United with the injury and the game against Swansea is a full 15 days after that.

    Bill Shankly what a legend.

I always tried to have a joke up my sleeve to boost our lads and knock down the opposition. We took our football seriously, but we always tried to get a laugh out of the team talks. And I would always keep a few bombs for Saturday. I might say to the old guy on the Anfield door: 'Here's a box of toilet rolls. Hand them to the opposition when they come through the door.'

Often I'd say it just as our opponents were walking in. We didn't lose many, but when we did we were always ready to learn. We were always confident, but we were never overconfident. Being cocky is a form of ignorance. It means you are talking too much and if you are guilty of that, an opponent will bring you down to earth.

Yes, imo. Lamela is a calculated gamble, as is HBA with his inconsistency. You could get away with both if the other options were stronger. I'd downgrade Ivan and/or Zab (I can't see City keeping many clean sheets with Kompany out).

True, even where I've put the money it is a risk. It's RVP that takes up all the budget though. Even if I downgrade Zaba and Ivanovic it will only mean turning a 5m mid into a 7-8m one that I am equally unhappy with.

If you downgraded those 2, perhaps you could go Lamela > Walcott and upgrade a cheap mid to Paulinho? He's making some very good runs and has been unlucky not to score, and it would give you some Spurs "coverage" for their good fixtures. Just an idea.

Why are People going 5 at the back on wc It simply will not last

    1) How many CS were in PL last year
    2) If all your 5 defenders concede thats 10 points and a pretty crap gw
    3) if they all keep cs its only 30 points
    4) Most of you pick the attacking lb rb instead of the cb so its unlikely (unless they assist) that they will get bonus points
    5) it wont last long and with no wc to jan you will need to take a hit to reshape your team
    6) you must hate football hoping for 0-0 matches.

The thing that's enticing is that even when teams are winning 2/3-0 the defenders are still picking up 2/3 baps which is unusual.

5 at the back is massively overkill but defenders will play a bigger part this season in my opinion.

Point 3 is the one you have wrong. Those going for big defences are trying to catch the bonus points and getting more than your hypothetical 6 points per player.

No, the amount of clean sheets will decrease.

But it's about judging the potential upside of a defender doing well, against a cheap midfielder doing well.

Your bunch of 6m midfielders will do pretty well to reach that sum of points with no bonus points coming their way for lone assists

      1) Don't know total. I think Arsenal kept about 14. If they keep the same amount this season having an Arsenal defender would be equivalent to a 14 goal a season player given the new bonus system.
      2) It's pretty crappy when none of your mids or forwards score too.
      3) Untrue with bonus. Plus players like Evra or Zabs get attacking points sometimes,
      4) Yep maybe cbs are the way to go
      5) Based on what?
      6) Just want points innit

the thing is... theres still the cs point for them to be earned.. when a midfield does nth , he only get 3 points.

if the defender concede, they can still assist and get bps. the chances for them to get points increases as if they get a assist, high chance they get bps

30-40 points at the back plus 6 for keeper plus 10 from crappy midfield plus 20-30 from RVP etc up front plus possible bonus means 60-80 points, lovely 🙂

RVP, you can get 5 big defs a lot cheaper than 4 big mids and still have RVP Soldado Benteke etc up front. The point that is being lost is that this does not depend on an upturn in clean sheets. Big defs got 22-25 points per million last season. This season that will go up by 20-30 with bonus, that makes them worth 1 million more than they were and they already topped the value charts.

in my opionion players on WC should go with 3 premium defenders then two 4.5 defenders so it doesnt effect their team going forward too much so they can be flexible instead of getting baines ivanovic kos vidic etc

I agree - 5 or 4 at the back; it's a bubble based on too small a data set to be significant. Yes assist might not get BPs like they used to but they still get 3 points. Historically we've looked at BPs as exactly what they are 'a bonus' - now people are building their teams around them.

      In what way?

PlayOn will always make the most money same as every other form of gambling, but every player has equal opportunity to walk away in profit.

plus if you have restraint you can keep playing the "expert" known as Robbie Fowler week in week out and keep your gambling in profit.

I would keep Sturridge, at least until we hear more news on his injury. Rogers seems to like playing him even when he isn't fully fit, so my money would be on him to start against Swansea.

Benteke has a couple of nice fixtures but then Villa have some tough games against tough opposition (albeit most of them at home)

Soldado's fixtures are mint, but to date he's not getting good service as AVB looks to find his best formation.

So for me, it's a coin toss. Perhaps keep Benteke and wait until Spurs start to click offensively?

      When all fit:

      Walker - Kaboul - Vert - Rose

      Occasional rotation to:

      Walker - Kaboul - Dawson/Chir - Vert

Basically, Walker and Vert are the only ones nailed on (Kaboul could be, but has a questionable injury record)

I reckon longer term it will be Walker Chiriches Vertonghen Rose.

Chiriches is the typical AVB type of defender - comfortable on the ball and can get forward, whereas Dawson just doesn't have enough pace.

The one thing Chiriches lacks is aerial ability - he's a good 3 inches shorter than Dawson and Kaboul and could be benched against teams who pose a strong aerial threat.

Non-fan, so basing this on what I know of AVB. He prefers high lines with quick, ball playing defenders - Dawson doesn't really fulfil that criteria. In terms of center backs, Kaboul still seems like a firm favourite so he or Chiriches would partner Vertonghen.

I'd expect ultimately he would want a back line of Walker, Chiriches, Vertonghen and Danny Rose.
