Daniel Sturridge fails to recover from a thigh problem and is out of England’s upcoming match with Ukraine. Luis Suarez bags a brace for Uruguay, Victor Moses is amongst the goals for Nigeria, while David Luiz and Ramires feature for Brazil as Oscar misses out with an ankle knock:

Sturridge Out of Ukraine Match

Daniel Sturridge’s Fantasy owners were given further reason for concern after the forward was
ruled out of England’s qualifier against Ukraine on Tuesday evening. The Liverpool man has failed to recover in time from the thigh problem that had been bothering him prior to last weekend’s win over United and yesterday’s news will raise question marks over his availability for the Reds’ next league fixture away to Swansea.

The Scout Says: Although the Gameweek 4 trip to the Liberty doesn’t take place until Monday September 16, Sturridge’s propensity for picking up injuries is a real concern. Last season, he was sidelined at Chelsea with a hamstring injury, while a groin strain hampered his number of starts with the Merseysiders. Frustratingly, this comes at a time where he’s turning in the most prolific performances of his career – grabbing the match-winner in each of the first three league matches. With an enticing run of games up next for Brendan Rodgers’ side, the bandwagon was in overdrive but has now comes to a standstill on the back of his omission – given that Luis Suarez is back for Gameweek 6, Rodgers may decide to take it easy with Sturridge in order to prevent further injury. The arrival of Victor Moses could also see Iago Aspas pushed into the lone forward role, with Philippe Coutinho switching from the left flank into “the hole” behind Aspas, should Rodgers choose to court caution. Both Suarez and Moses were in action last night for their international sides and the duo found the net – Moses grabbed Nigeria’s second against Malawai while Suarez notched both Uruguay’s goals in a win away to Peru.

Luiz and Ramires Star for Samba Boys

Chelsea pair Ramires and David Luiz both featured in Brazil’s 6-0 drubbing over Australia. Ramires, in the side for the injured Oscar, got himself on the scoresheet and earned an assist, while Luiz came through an hour before being replaced.

The Scout Says: Having started in the Super Cup clash with Bayern Munich, Luiz would now see firmly in the frame to figure in Jose Mourinho’s Premier League lineup when domestic matters reconvene for Gameweek 4’s trip to Everton. It was John Terry who made way against Bayern and it remains to be seen how Mourinho will juggle his defence come Saturday’s tea-time kick-off. Luiz would seem set to figure in Brazil’s friendly with Portugal on Tuesday before flying back to join up with the Blues’ squad. He has dropped to 6.3 from 6.5 in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, representing a viable saving for the 31% who currently hold Branislav Ivanovic. Terry, meanwhile, is owed by over 5% of FPL managers who will doubtless be looking to the Goodison teamsheet with some trepidation. However, having been fully rested over the break, Terry could well be restored against the Toffees with both Gary Cahill and Luiz seeing minutes for their respective countries. Meanwhile, Oscar’s reported ankle injury, reportedly sustained in training with Brazil, will make him an early doubt for Saturday’s clash – perhaps opening the door for Juan Mata’s first league start of the season.

Hodgson in press conference before the England games:
      http://www.express.co.uk/sport/football/427152/Hodgson-rues-injury-list
"(Sturridge) has worked hard at his treatment and the initial prognosis was that he wouldn't be fit for either of them but he didn't accept that.

"He's worked very hard and had the necessary treatment but I think it will be touch and go.

Sturridge himself post-game vs Man U saying he was injured in the League Cup game and was still playing while injured because it's the kind of game you don't want to miss:

It's going to be two weeks + a day so I can't see him not getting out there.

Might not be the full 90 but, if he retains the lone strikers role at LIV then he's an easy long term play.

While that's true, I still reckon Vidic will start most PL games and it'll be Ferdinand rotating. Vidic's injuries not been fitness related and he's just had a nice long break with the internationals.

But Vidic isn't actual cover of United's attack. He's just a CB who can score from set pieces. Evra actually covers United when scoring from open play in addition to his set piece threat.

Evra and Vidic both do not cover United's attack, they're just goal threats and good defenders.

Not cover completely in any sense of the word, but Evra marginally does (for a defender) due to his capability to get numerous assists.

No proper football this weekend and I have too much time on my hands...

So I've tweaked the process I used last season to scrape the match stats off the FPL website, and I've made some tools which might be useful:

Some metrics on comparing the new bonus system to the old one, based on match scores etc:
    http://public.tableausoftware.com/views/FPL2013-14playerstats/Impactofnewbonussystem

Lineups for each match, showing who's been picking up the points based on formation etc:
    http://public.tableausoftware.com/views/FPL2013-14playerstats/Teamsheets

Complete detailed player history for this season, filterable by various options:
    http://public.tableausoftware.com/views/FPL2013-14playerstats/DetailedbyGW

Total FPL points each gameweek by player and by team:

So far not much that we're not already aware of - CBs do better over FBs on bonuses... defenders do much better in low scoring games but this advantage disappears in higher scoring games.

The tables might come in useful later in the season - for example it will allow us to see which types of player score well against a particular team, or which score better home v away.

5.0 m in the bank, all set for Soldado > RVP, but now I'm really tempted to do Dzeko > Welbeck and hold on to the cash and Soldado. Can't do Dzeko to RVP and someone else to A.N.Other for -4, as it will wetaken the squad/I'm happy with the rest of the squad.

I guess my question is what do people think of Welbeck as United cover for the next 6-8 gws?

    The way I see RVP versus non-RVP is it's effectively RVP + 5.0 m/f or Soldado + 9.5 m/f.

But none of the 9.0/9.5 midfielders is that tempting (Walcott apart, and he's in my team anyway), so it ends up being a 7.0 HBA type plus an upgrade in defence. But since I can get the likes of Evra + Coleman + Mert into my defence even with RVP, it doesn't really need another premium defender.

Conclusion: maybe I should go with RVP after all?

Same for me - also agree with your post above , I'm not seeing that much difference in the non-RVP teams, or many players that I would want to add even if I could afford them. Basically, a team with a bit of increased value, say 102m, buys you RVP and everyone you need to play 4-3-3

Ozil did tempt me but couldn't quite fit him in even without RVP. He's > 9.5, so I'd have to downgrade elsewhere. Hazard and Silva have been frustrating for quite a long time. Ozil and Lamela are definitely interesting though.

        SOLD!

"Every night, the same horny thing happens down by the Hamburg docks. Come late evening, the night skins are being tautened over edge. Under whirring, murmuring, and avoidance pains, the little gingerbread house opens up. The Golden Pudel Club briefly digests, sighs, and pinches ist own earlobe."

Get Vidal/Hamsik over Schwein. Lima nailed on 5.5m forward in a nice group where his team score quite freely. Bruno is your budget mid whose OOP and has scored 5 goals in 6 games. That's a pretty darn good budget mid to have.

My view is a 1 man team like Benteke is always better fpl wise.

If Suarez was just a good player but incapable of goals himself, that would help Sturridge.

But both are really greedy, so it surely stands to reason suarez will score some and thus eat into sturridges baps and also goals as, if suarez puts Liverpool 1 up in 75 mins say, they are hardly going to push for a second from sturridge. More likely they'd sub him

Yes and he said he wasn't expected to be fit for either of the games, it was just a hope. The reluctance would be to risk him for England and injure him for Liverpool, so maybe he is fit enough to get through a game like he did with Man U. But his current status is still injured.
