Daniel Sturridge fails to recover from a thigh problem and is out of England’s upcoming match with Ukraine. Luis Suarez bags a brace for Uruguay, Victor Moses is amongst the goals for Nigeria, while David Luiz and Ramires feature for Brazil as Oscar misses out with an ankle knock:

Sturridge Out of Ukraine Match

Daniel Sturridge’s Fantasy owners were given further reason for concern after the forward was
ruled out of England’s qualifier against Ukraine on Tuesday evening. The Liverpool man has failed to recover in time from the thigh problem that had been bothering him prior to last weekend’s win over United and yesterday’s news will raise question marks over his availability for the Reds’ next league fixture away to Swansea.

The Scout Says: Although the Gameweek 4 trip to the Liberty doesn’t take place until Monday September 16, Sturridge’s propensity for picking up injuries is a real concern. Last season, he was sidelined at Chelsea with a hamstring injury, while a groin strain hampered his number of starts with the Merseysiders. Frustratingly, this comes at a time where he’s turning in the most prolific performances of his career – grabbing the match-winner in each of the first three league matches. With an enticing run of games up next for Brendan Rodgers’ side, the bandwagon was in overdrive but has now comes to a standstill on the back of his omission – given that Luis Suarez is back for Gameweek 6, Rodgers may decide to take it easy with Sturridge in order to prevent further injury. The arrival of Victor Moses could also see Iago Aspas pushed into the lone forward role, with Philippe Coutinho switching from the left flank into “the hole” behind Aspas, should Rodgers choose to court caution. Both Suarez and Moses were in action last night for their international sides and the duo found the net – Moses grabbed Nigeria’s second against Malawai while Suarez notched both Uruguay’s goals in a win away to Peru.

Luiz and Ramires Star for Samba Boys

Chelsea pair Ramires and David Luiz both featured in Brazil’s 6-0 drubbing over Australia. Ramires, in the side for the injured Oscar, got himself on the scoresheet and earned an assist, while Luiz came through an hour before being replaced.

The Scout Says: Having started in the Super Cup clash with Bayern Munich, Luiz would now see firmly in the frame to figure in Jose Mourinho’s Premier League lineup when domestic matters reconvene for Gameweek 4’s trip to Everton. It was John Terry who made way against Bayern and it remains to be seen how Mourinho will juggle his defence come Saturday’s tea-time kick-off. Luiz would seem set to figure in Brazil’s friendly with Portugal on Tuesday before flying back to join up with the Blues’ squad. He has dropped to 6.3 from 6.5 in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, representing a viable saving for the 31% who currently hold Branislav Ivanovic. Terry, meanwhile, is owed by over 5% of FPL managers who will doubtless be looking to the Goodison teamsheet with some trepidation. However, having been fully rested over the break, Terry could well be restored against the Toffees with both Gary Cahill and Luiz seeing minutes for their respective countries. Meanwhile, Oscar’s reported ankle injury, reportedly sustained in training with Brazil, will make him an early doubt for Saturday’s clash – perhaps opening the door for Juan Mata’s first league start of the season.

But I have to sell, don't I? Benteke is 2m cheaper, nailed on and probably better 😆

The flairest of flair transfers. Already done that one though, Aguero to benteke soon.

Wouldn't ditch Coutinho with those fixtures + Suarez coming back soon enough. Silva if you do get Ozil.

With their last 2 games not sure it's a huge problem, Negredo may be worth owning soon. Silva a decent option just think Coutinho's a better one over the next month ish.

Thought I would just put this team together, and the more I look at it the more I like it:

    Mignolet (Harper)

    Evra Vidic Terry Walker Enrique

    Walcott Ozil (Ward-Prowse Morisson Pozuelo)

    Soldado Benteke Giroud

Really liking the idea of 5-2-3, despite all the hate. I'm also happy with Walcott and Ozil as my only two midfielders, and I am confident Arsenal will be strong over the next few gameweeks. Just worried about Terry's game time with Luiz looking good again. So what would be the best option:

    Terry and Soldado

    Ivanovic and Sturridge

Thoughts and opinions are always greatly appreciated 😀

It helps when you have Mignolet as your keeper 😛

Just have a feeling that with the squad they have and the fixtures ahead Arsenal could run rampant. Huge gamble I know, but could seriously pay off 😀

Jack - I'm happy with how they rotate. I think Luiz and Terry will be the first choice defenders and that terry was dropped for fitness reasons. CUrrent team is http://fantasy.premierleague.com/entry/72/event-history/3/

Matt - It's Cardiff's Turner, I shouldn't have to play him very often. I'm happy to take a punt on Nani.

Shirokov - I'm very tempted by Ozil and Walcott.

Dzeko is the only real problem, could get Benteke/Giroud by downgrading someone like Mirallas/Toure (depending on how much in the bank)

I'd be very surprised if Sturridge didn't start away at Swansea.i got a sense in the post match interview after beating utd that he wanted the 2 weeks of international break off to be ready for us.

He's obviously got a poor history of injuries, but given what our medical department have been able to do with Gerrard over the last few years,Sturridge should be ok going forward.

He kept getting dropped with minor injuries/niggles at the end of last season. I finally sold him before he eventually got right and went on a spree, but he missed a lot of games where nothing much was being reported as wrong.

Wait and see, but he was dropped when close to fit last season, so it wouldn't be a surprise.

Of course last season they had a rampant and un-banned Suarez, which changes things just a bit...

any advice on which defenders to play please? (and what formation)

Coleman (CHE) - tough fixture albeit at home, has attacking potential though
Shaw (WHU) - west ham are poor away from home, attacking potential. however not fully fit and theres a risk of him playing less than 60 mins
Collins (sou) - just 1 goal conceded, CBs get a lot of BPS. but west ham are poor away from home
Chester (CAR) - nice fixture, hull look fairly solid, BPS potential
Briggs (WBA) - chances are he won't start, if he does theres a great of a CS, what i don't want is another 16 min cameo like last week.

The rest of my team is
    walcott lamela silva barkley ward-prowse
    RVP benteke sturridge.

    Thanks!

3-4-3 with Barkley on the bench. Would definitely pick Shaw and Chester. Not sure about the last spot, probably Coleman.

i genuinely think very bad value despite his current placing on top of the midfielder rankings. for 5mil you can have guys like whittingham and brady on penalties, free kicks and corners. yaya is essentially a midfielder without the freedom to get in the box now who takes free kicks. can do so much better for that price

Do England lack the quality players or are our failings deeper rooted than that?

There was a good article that said the problem stems from England having too much at stake to risk giving new players a real chance.

England have to be consistently average, can't risk taking a chance at being great/

IMO the lack of coaches argument doesn't explain why our youngsters are being thrown in at full international level cos they've had a few appearances for their club I.e Sterling,Barkley.

We've got the players just had really shit managers since 96'

That's delusional. We don't have the players and won't produce them until the philosophy changes from grass roots to the very top.

Fin - It won't let me reply to you above for some reason. Nani picked up an injury in United's final pre season game before the community shield which is why his minutes have been limited. In a United XI game before that he scored 2 goals. He's also just signed a new 5 year contract. He didnt get on well with Ferguson at all but someone always benefits when a new manager arrives and I think that will be Nani. He's one of few united have who can win a game himself with a moment of class when he's on form.

He could be a huge bargain. I'd love to have him if he starts vs Palace, but for the long term its probably good to see whether he is trusted to start in the big game against City in GW5 before we know whether he is going to get enough games to make him worth buying.

The late game v Brazil in America on Wed is surely making him a doubt for Palace otherwise he'd be in my wc team.

Who would be in favour of this or against it?

While say, Euro 2012 was happening. Have the 'dud' teams (i.e. Those about to be seeded lowest 3 pots in World Cup qualifying or those who came lowest in Euro qualifying groups) play a pre-qualification stage.

So like, 8 groups of 3, played over a month.
4 games each. One per weekend etc.
Only the winners get into the actual qualifiers.

That way, we dont get Spain v Andorra and stuff. Those being a pointless waste of time.

So like, a group would have like, Andorra, Belarus and Scotland etc. 1 then gets in vs the real sides later on.

These sides would actually get to play games where they might win too. So seeing some of the ball might gradually improve teams like San Marino.

I would like this to happen so the qualifying groups then just have 4 teams each. All games quite competitive too.

Could then basically relegate and promote too.

So say Scotland were in a dud group and won it.
Then came 3rd of 4 in the better group.
Next time, they are straight in and the side who were 4th have to qualify.

I quite like games like Spain vs San Marino or whoever.

It would be good for those low ranked teams to play games where they have chance, purely for my selfish entertainment it's fine as it is.

Whats the point in a game like that though.
Ukraine won 9-0 this week and they are average.

Who benefits? Ukraine players arent tested. San Marino ones dont learn. Fans just watch a mis match.

Yeah but I'm talking about from my entertainment point of view, not from the view of what actually is best. I enjoy watching say England go up against a weak team especially if fringe players are given their chance on the international stage.

But yeah realistically it should probably be done in a similar way to CONCACAF. I'd be happy with that.
