Strong benches came to the fore in a week that saw two of the Fantasy big-hitters ruled out through late injury. Sergio Aguero hints at the form of old, Michu is hitting his stride at the perfect time for Swansea, while performances from Leighton Baines and Tottenham’s backline strengthen the case for defence:

Points on the bench are very handy…
Nobody could have foreseen the injuries to both Robin van Persie and Theo Walcott and when Fantasy royalty abdicates at the last minute, it’s handy to be able to fall back on points potential on the bench. While the short-term injuries were untimely, Robbie Brady’s double-point haul at Newcastle and Southampton’s unexpected clean sheet at Anfield meant that a good few Fantasy managers benefited from autosubs to soften the blow rather nicely. Of course, some will call it luck but there’s no getting away from the fact that those managers who benefited had chosen to recruit players for their bench that were both active and offered points potential – for that, they deserve credit. While 4.0 defenders and 4.5 midfielders allow for greater investment elsewhere, they offered very little when Sunday’s events unfolded. It underlines the importance of budget players that genuinely offer points: over the last five Gameweeks, Brady and Southampton’s back four have demonstrated that they fit the bill perfectly.

Coleman isn’t going to cover for Baines’ quality…
While Seamus Coleman has served us well and hints at further returns at both ends of the field, he’s no match for the explosive potential of Leighton Baines. Saturday’s events were the first time that the mop-head left-back flexed his Fantasy muscles and, sadly for those who had neglected his potential, he delivered in style. A pair of sublime free-kicks underlined his dead-ball expertise and with spot-kicks and consistent raids down the left, there can be little doubt that Baines will go on threatening to offer “explosive” afternoons like Saturday’s at Upton Park. While Coleman has been a success story, he’ll struggle to keep pace with Baines and Fantasy managers must consider trading up or opting to cover the pair in Everton’s back four.

Lukaku’s muscle will compliment Everton’s guile…
While Roberto Martinez is determined to weave pretty patterns around the pitch, he has been quick to concede that Romelu Lukaku changed the game at Upton Park. As we saw last season at West Brom, few defences, if any, can quickly adapt when they’re suddenly given Lukaku’s pace and power to deal with. So effective from the bench to “rough up” an establish defensive brief, the Belgian can transform matches. Despite his impact as a substitute, a first start at home to Newcastle next Monday looks likely and Lukaku’s winning strike against the Hammers surely pointed the way to further returns to come for the Toffees. Fantasy managers will already be preparing a “route to recruit” – priced at 7.4 in the FPL following the great double Gameweek fall-out at Chelsea, we may well see Lukaku ease through the gears and up towards 8.0 by the end of October.

For all the attacking flair, Tottenham’s defence deserves our attention…
Pre-season saw Fantasy managers caught up in the hype surrounding Roberto Soldado. Similarly, Tottenham’s moves prior to the transfer deadline, saw us dazzled by an array of attacking talent, with the impressive Christian Eriksen, in particular, earning our attention. However, while the Spurs attack still struggles to deliver the heavy returns we’re expecting, the defence continues to excel. Andre Villas-Boas’ back four has already kept seven clean sheets in all competitions – they only kept 14 in 54 matches last term. Top of our Watchlist rankings, Jan Vertonghen is Tottenham’s top scoring player thus far – Kyle Walker and Hugo Lloris are ranked next. Every time Spurs have kept a clean sheet, Vertonghen has earned at least one bonus point – that consistency, coupled with Tottenham’s defensive form and the Belgian’s potential for goals, may have Fantasy managers reassessing their choice of asset in the Spurs squad.

Michu is no one-season wonder…
It’s three goals in three matches for the Spaniard who orchestrated a hugely impressive Swansea performance at Selhurst Park. Sunday’s encounter offered several lessons learned – notably dismissing the premise that Michael Laudrup’s side would be jaded by Europa League exploits. There were few signs of fatigue or heavy legs – instead Swansea and Michu were out of the blocks in 90 seconds to knock the wind out of Palace. It was plain sailing from there, with Michu magnificent throughout – his goal threat remains potent and while Laudrup continues to rotate his strikers, the rangy Spaniard remains a constant in the Swans’ lineup – ever-present and ever dangerous: after suffering a heavy loss of ownership over Swansea’s difficult start to the campaign, Fantasy managers are coming around to the idea of acquiring Michu once again.

We can’t write off Aguero….
In a Gameweek which saw Christian Benteke laid low and Robin van Persie unexpectedly pull a sickie, we witnessed Sergio Aguero slap us in the face with a convincing CV. Two smartly taken goals put United to the sword and demonstrated that the busy Argentine has form, fitness and confidence on his side right now. It’s four goals in six starts in all competitions, as Aguero quietly edges his way back into our Fantasy thinking. With Wayne Rooney also in bloom and Luis Suarez now back on the scene, Aguero is again likely to be overlooked but, while Manuel Pellegrini seems uncertain on his strike partner, Aguero has been named on every league teamsheet so far (only missing out at Stoke at the very last minute as a precaution). In addition, despite the cautious appraisal of City’s assets, Pellegrini’s side are now the league’s top scorers.

Ben Arfa’s Ballon d’Or is out of reach…
At times he’s brilliant. At others, simply abject, almost a liability. Ben Arfa’s unlikely quest for the Ballon d’Or will surely always fall short unless he can somehow master the art of consistency. Subject to huge investment prior to what looked to be a potentially profitable home encounter with Hull, Ben Arfa disappointed, turning in an ineffective and frustrating display which allowed Loic Remy to steal the limelight for the defeated Magpies. His new Fantasy owners shouldn’t be surprised; Ben Arfa is an explosive Fantasy talent but one with a lengthy fuse – we can’t expect regular returns and we must show the kind of patience that Alan Pardew has had to learn. The Newcastle boss will know he will have to endure, persevere and make the most of a fit Ben Arfa by playing him week after week, waiting for the next match-winning performance.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

    Currently have this;

    Migs/ 4.0

    Coleman, Zab, Vidic, Dawson, Collins
    JWP, BArfa, Walcott, Brady, Eriksen
    Studge, Roonpig, Giroud

    1.1m in the bank

I did Benteke > Roonpig for my FT once Tekkers got injured and Roonpig was going up in price.
I've not taken a hit yet this season.

    Current plan is to wait until Swa v Ars is out of the way and then go;

    BArfa + Studge > Michu + Lukaku

    Any problems with the plan?

Its difficult for me. Still think Sturridge is better value for money. I support Liverpool for what its worth.

Sounds like Sturridge will be the furthest man forward through the middle even when Suarez comes back. Suarez will be playing around him and looking to chip in. When Coutinho is back, Suarez might even end up out wide.

I wonder what effect Liverpool being in touching distance with the top of the league will do for him. He was saving Liverpool last season just to be in contention for 5th or 6th, really, it must have demotivated him. Suarez might see it as up to him to keep Liverpool up there.

I've got Sturridge though, and keeping for a bit.

It's against my moral compass. When you buy a player in FPL you directly want them to do well. I don't want Suarez to do well, he's a terrible person. In fact I'm not so sure I would see it such a shame if he had a career-ending injury.

Yeah but he is great to watch, his dribbling and skill. I see him more of an alien from a far distant planet with no sense of right and wrong. I agree though...i have to pick players I like otherwise if I don't own them i don't them to do well..

It's what I'm going with. The way I see it, all 3 are mid-bargain price, a bracket where club often doesn't come into it. I'll play Lukaku in pretty much every fixture, and Coleman and Barkley when I need to.

Dawson being at fault fo Girouds goal.
Watching every minute of Spurs action so far, I can't say he's not been generally solid. But any time Spurs have looked under pressure it's because of Dawson going to ground early, or Walker muddling up.
I'd like to see Chiriches get a run, great prospect apparently

Me. Really think it could be Chelsea that he's dropped for. Or that it will be the game which causes him to be dropped after that. Kaboul is just a bargain waiting to be unleashed. For 4.8 i'd happily have him if he's starting 3 out of 5 games i think.

Spurs defence is great and Walker is bombing forward, ended up in the box twice yesterday and could easily have scored.

        or

Just don't think he'll ever do much on the wing in a Moyes side. Look at Hazard and Mata under Mourinho, and they're proven. I have no hope there. They're best leaving, and won't go to premier league clubs, so as fpl prospects, what could have been. What with Bale leaving too, it's not good.

Really tough benching decision this week.

Which two to bench out of this lot
    Wilson - Home to Norwich
    Coleman - Home to Newcastle,
Ben Arfa - away to Everton
    Whittingham - away to Fulham

Tempted to bench the two mids with HBA as first choice sub.

I think I'm fine with benching Whittingham...that's why I got him...great bench guy that should retain value and pop up with the odd goal...hopefully at the same time as I have injuries.

Wilson has to play I feel, so too Coleman. Seems weird benching HBA though...but I guess if Walcott is out then he'll come in anyway.

That is the danger. Wilson could be six points lost, but HBA could be anything from 2 to 11 if he gets a penalty and an assist.

            Really tough call.

I'd lean more towards benching Coleman tbh.. Norwich have been really really poor so far and I will be surprised if Stoke won't keep CS

Bench Coleman and Whittingham imo. Newcastle will score at Goodison

I think wilson looks safe....played the full 90 against Arsenal and wasn't hauled off.

Could you see him taking Pieters spot at left back? Would give me an headache if that's the case

Hmmm...so it look like Wilson is a definite starter, Whitts a definite bencher with Coleman and HBA battling it out for the remaining place.

Why bench Coleman, Everton seem great at home defensively and he really bombs forward?

Newcastle have only failed to score in 10 out of 40 away games in since 2011/12. considering this includes the top 6 twice etc, there goal scoring record on the road is pretty impressive.

Also remove the Citeh game when they were down to ten men and they sit second on goal attempts this season

      I'd bench Whitt for sure.
No idea about the other, too much headache 😐

I have the exact same decision.
      All four the exact same.
Wilson is a fairly decent chance of a cs, which could mean 7 points .. had a shot or two on goal this week too.
Coleman could always keep a cs and get attacking returns, think I'll start him for sure.
Ben Arfa was useless this weekend, and Everton are good at the back sometimes, but I want to start him.
I think I have to bench him because of the other three, and the fact he's in a promoted side away from home.

I guess you may have just wildcarded as well....nice to have a good bench finally, but creates headaches like this.

I think Wilson and Coleman have to start which for me does mean benching HBA. I could bench Eriksen instead....that seems even weirder though.

Maybe before Bayern, aside from that he's nailed on imo. One of their best players and looks like he's found form.

I really hope Suarez makes Liverpool fun to watch again. They've really declined since gw, chances made wise. I think they created more in that game than every other match combined.
