Romelu Lukaku flexes his substantial Fantasy football muscles to wreck the Newcastle defence and leave us re-assessing our forward lines yet again. Meanwhile, the withdrawal of Hatem Ben Arfa and a transformed second-half showing from Newcastle has his owners hovering over the panic button.

The Game Changer

Lukaku simply ran riot in the first half with the Newcastle back four unable to cope with his pace and power. Having transformed and won the game at Upton Park from the bench, this evening, the Belgian dismantled the Magpies with a brace and an assist that put the game out of reach.

We shouldn’t be surprised by Lukaku’s impact. We saw last season that, when he is given pitch time, he can deliver, with 17 goals from just 20 league starts at West Brom. Jose Mourinho may feel that his game is not refined enough for the Chelsea squad but Lukaku has nonetheless proved to be hugely effective on the Premier League stage.

Fantasy managers now have to carefully consider their front lines. Lukaku at 7.6 and rising in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) will clearly represent outstanding value if he can replicate the strike rate shown at the Hawthorns. On tonight’s evidence, there’s every chance he can achieve that and more, putting further pressure on the three slots in our squad.

The Underused

It seems almost folly to discuss yet another option up front but we shouldn’t ignore Loic Remy’s late goal which left the Goodison nerves jangling. Three goals in three starts underline the Frenchman’s impact that, while less explosive than Lukaku’s at Everton, has been no less effective.

Available in the same FPL price bracket, Remy’s performance will likely be overlooked but, having been shifted to a central role in place of Papiss Cisse tonight, it’s clear that Remy will, quite literally, be central to their aspirations this season.

The Selection Poser

Hatem Ben Arfa’s withdrawal at half-time took everyone by surprise and yet, minutes later, his replacement Yohan Cabaye, scored from range to hand the Magpies an unlikely lifeline. Despite attempting to focus play through Ben Arfa in the first half, Alan Pardew took the decision to replace him with the more combative Cabaye for the second period and the change appeared to pep up the visitors as they came close to an unlikely comeback.

The reason behind the change is uncertain. Certainly Alan Pardew gave no indication of an injury in his post-match comments, leaving Ben Arfa’s owners frustrated at the curtailed pitch time and somewhat anxious that the mercurial winger may have fallen out of favour ahead of the Gameweek 7 trip to Cardiff. We await further noises from St James’ Park.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

    Guys I need some help;

    Current midfield

Michu, Barfa, Lamela, Ramsey; Ward Prowse

till yesterday was only wanted to take out Lamela (have stuck with him for 3 or 4 GWs, time to admit I made a bad decision), and after last night want to take out Barfa as wellbut he's got Cardiff coming up so not sure.

    Anyways opinions on a

    Lamela > ??? (8.7 + bank)

and should I move on Barfa for a hit? if yes Barfa to who?

    1.4 in the bank

    Thanks

Ben Arfa for Siggurdson possibly. Not missed major price rises for him, and Tottenham vs west Ham and Villa next two gameweeks. I think he's almost nailed on, because i think Holtby and Chadli will be used more in the europa league given their form there, whereas Siggurdson has more premier league experience and is their top scorer.

Lamela looks uncertain, no idea when he'll be unleashed. Same can be said of Willian though.

Yeah Mata is more likely to play over Lamela. De Bruyne seems to be Mourinho's chosen exiled one now, left out of the squad for european game and forced to train with u21's.

Mata seems to be on set pieces too, if the last game was evidence with the cross for the Terry goal.

When Cazorla and Walcott come back soon, they probably won't all be scoring machines. Giroud already lost his usefulness when Ozil arrived. But I also don't believe in Brady, who just got lucky to get a few questionable spot kicks in succession, and won't be as much of a scorer without them. I'd look another way, personally.

Why are some people trading Sturridge for Suarez? It seems like Sturridge and Suarez are fairly interchangeable. What makes Suarez more valuable? Is it just because he is owned by less people? Just asking because I have money in the bank.

Have both. If I had to pick I'd choose Suarez, in one game he got two goals, one in the second half, two things Sturridge still has not achieved this season. Plus he had a lot of shots, and looked hungrier as he always does. Liverpool can genuinely get fourth this season, and I think that means more to Suarez than Sturridge, who is merely happy doing his best.

Top scorers for me will be between Lukaku, Sturridge, Suarez. Feel like other teams will spread the goals around, city for example, Dzeko, Negredo, Yaya, or United, Hernandez, rvp, Rooney, and obviously Benteke will lose a month. Remy will be up there as well I think.

      True

But having seen a few teams, most of them have WC-ed recently. So their team composition along with their subs are pretty solid. So I guess they can afford to chase the in form players to some extent.

Do you mean cycling through the top 5 or 6, or getting at least 3 of them? I agree with you if it's the former -- just pick three and count your points.

If it's the latter, I would argue that for me midfield has been and still is such a mess for me that I want a big 3 up front, 3 elite defenders, and budget Boruc securely in my team so I can patiently reshape my midfield with the 35m I've misspent on it. I can't name 5 mids who I feel are good longterm picks.

Giroud unless you have value built up in him. But fine to keep him as well, he is scoring reguarly.

for those who want a balanced team (i.e. funds for mid and defense) with injury transfer options for their strikers as injuries arise, i think there's a striker template emerging

    1 of:
    Rooney/Kun/Hatable

    1 of:
Sturridge/Giroud/Bentenke/Soldado (Soldado to prove self yet, but throw him in for all the RMT love)

    1 of:
    Lukaku/Lambert/Remy/Dzeko

for those who like balance, what think ye?

I still think the value in the 9ers is unbeatable this season. I'll always be looking at two 9ers + Roo/Luk

Interesting - posted above about your strikers wastefulness. Here, I would move Soldado down and Lukaku/Lambert up in terms of quality and returns. Remy and Dzeko do not seem worth it to me, and I think 3 of the top 6 is quite defensible. RVP Lukaku Lambert is also a good allocation of funds; basically I would spend a bit more than the 11/9.5/7.5 proposed here.

Where would you spend the extra money?

I feel like I need to upgrade HBA. I had him benched this weekend much to my relief. Here is my current team:

    Mig- Lewis
Evra - Coleman - Walker - Clyne - Chester (haven't been able to get rid of him yet)
    Michu - HBA - Ramsey - Barkley - Brady
    Rooney - Sturridge - Giroud.

Was considering YaYa, Ericksen, Oscar. Any thoughts or other suggestions? I will probably change strikers in the next few weeks, but right now I want to get rid of HBA.

watch Chelsea's match against Steau Bucharest tomorrow

stay with it and listen to Mourinho after the match

then decide who you want for HBA

and if you don't want any of them, keep in mind 2FTs over the int'l break with 4.5 in the bank will be nice too

also, would hold HBA as long as you can until you're worried about it hurting team value, if you are... better to wait for more confirmation from Mourinho at pre-weekend press conference on Friday perhaps, depending on which Chelsea player you choose

(and by the way, just don't even worry about transferring chester out, it isn't worth the FT unless you have 2 FTs some week and NOTHING else that needs to be done - chances are by the time you're in that situation, he'll be healthy again)

Mata is putting in a strong case for the number 10 spot imo, not sure Oscar will hold it down long term. He will still get game time, but he will become more of a rotation risk if Mata becomes (and should, imo) the main guy.

I have Oscar currently, also wanting to drop HBA!

    Hi all,

I've already taken a -4 to bring in Terry and Ramsey.
I've got RVP and want to bring in Suarez. How much do you think Suarez will cost by the next game?Do you think it is worth taking the -8 to do RVP->Suarez?

Nope. Did tekkers to Lukaku this week and Walcott to Ramsey last week. Injuries forcing my hand and the mid priced-low priced players currently doing the business.

I'm sure that will change, but till then, i'm swimming in virtual fpl cash.

Abramovich does things to his strikers. Can't be the Chelsea managers, they change more often than a traffic light. What's unclear is why Drogba was good at Chelsea, as he seems the exception that proves the rule,
