Romelu Lukaku flexes his substantial Fantasy football muscles to wreck the Newcastle defence and leave us re-assessing our forward lines yet again. Meanwhile, the withdrawal of Hatem Ben Arfa and a transformed second-half showing from Newcastle has his owners hovering over the panic button.

The Game Changer

Lukaku simply ran riot in the first half with the Newcastle back four unable to cope with his pace and power. Having transformed and won the game at Upton Park from the bench, this evening, the Belgian dismantled the Magpies with a brace and an assist that put the game out of reach.

We shouldn’t be surprised by Lukaku’s impact. We saw last season that, when he is given pitch time, he can deliver, with 17 goals from just 20 league starts at West Brom. Jose Mourinho may feel that his game is not refined enough for the Chelsea squad but Lukaku has nonetheless proved to be hugely effective on the Premier League stage.

Fantasy managers now have to carefully consider their front lines. Lukaku at 7.6 and rising in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) will clearly represent outstanding value if he can replicate the strike rate shown at the Hawthorns. On tonight’s evidence, there’s every chance he can achieve that and more, putting further pressure on the three slots in our squad.

The Underused

It seems almost folly to discuss yet another option up front but we shouldn’t ignore Loic Remy’s late goal which left the Goodison nerves jangling. Three goals in three starts underline the Frenchman’s impact that, while less explosive than Lukaku’s at Everton, has been no less effective.

Available in the same FPL price bracket, Remy’s performance will likely be overlooked but, having been shifted to a central role in place of Papiss Cisse tonight, it’s clear that Remy will, quite literally, be central to their aspirations this season.

The Selection Poser

Hatem Ben Arfa’s withdrawal at half-time took everyone by surprise and yet, minutes later, his replacement Yohan Cabaye, scored from range to hand the Magpies an unlikely lifeline. Despite attempting to focus play through Ben Arfa in the first half, Alan Pardew took the decision to replace him with the more combative Cabaye for the second period and the change appeared to pep up the visitors as they came close to an unlikely comeback.

The reason behind the change is uncertain. Certainly Alan Pardew gave no indication of an injury in his post-match comments, leaving Ben Arfa’s owners frustrated at the curtailed pitch time and somewhat anxious that the mercurial winger may have fallen out of favour ahead of the Gameweek 7 trip to Cardiff. We await further noises from St James’ Park.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

I feel that way also, but he keeps banging them in. His free kicks are so good recently, hardly a fluke with 3/3 so far. Just not sure if its worth it for a -4pt hit...

I recently decided to base captaincy on anytime goalscorer odds. It seems to me the most objective way to do things especially with assists worth less this season.

Suarez is 1/2 on. For non gamblers, this effectively means he is nailed on to score. Significantly Rooney is evens, which means they rate him 50-50 to score.

In a game where captaincy scores double, I honestly think (with similar fixtures ahead IMO slightly favouring suarez) rooney->suarez is a reasonable transfer this week.

Yes I know this will be unpopular!

It's not a bad strategy, and a good way of getting rid of your impulses. Although 1/2 doesn't mean he's nailed on to score. it means, that the bookies are offering you 1/2 that he scores. not quite the same.

I do this quite often with captaincy, same with clean sheets to sort out bench order. However, not sure I'd make transfers based on it, because sooo many other factors are equally or more important.

The "Tottenham don't score much" thing is being heeded with a bit too much caution IMO. We're creating loads of chanes but been held at bay by a bit of luck and some heroic goalkeeping performances. If it weren't for Marshall turning into Oliver Kahn for the day we could've put 5 past Cardiff quite easily.

Additionally we have scored a fair few both in the cup and in Europa League. Whilst those are lesser opposition it does also suggest that we can do this when we get going. Also the run of fixture coming up is the weaker teams so you would expect one or two of them to get battered.

Also we struggled to score in the opening 3 fixtures due to a lack of fluidity and link between the strikers/wingers and midfield. Eriksen/Holtby appear to have solved this issues and Cardiff, Norwich and the first half of Chelsea we've looked much more like scoring.

I agree that he'll outscore him over longer-term, but for just one GW it can go either way, which is why I don't see what the rush is about.

    Migs (Boruc)
    Fonte, Zab, Davies (Coleman, Chester)
    HBA, Michu, Ozil, brady (JWP)
    Giroud, Suarez, Soldado

Went Ferdinand and Rooney to Davies and Suarez for a hit, good move? And will HBA get a full game this week?

I would not say it is a good move unless you are aiming for a particular line up and wanted Suarez before price rise. I also think there are better options than Davies and you will regret signing him.

HBA is one of the crucial player in Newcastle...he will get a full game...only thing I don't understand in your team is that why did you swap Rooney with Suarez? Soldado is completely useless you should have done Solado --> Suarez..imo

No money to go Soldado to Suarez unless I wanted to have a very un-even team, I will go Soldado to benteke when he is back, and yes Davies was very knee jerky but I think Swansea have a great run, as long as he plays 60 minutes I'm happy!

It gives you 3m to balance your team , seen as you asked the q I feel you have reservations .
See what the extra 3m buys you (Michu eg) first before you dismiss it, By this time next week Suarez could be 11.5 , Rvp won't rise - you could get him back .
I would want pool cover this week

Does anyone remember RVP complaining at the start of the season that Utd were 3rd favourites to win the league?

He said they won the league last year by loads of points & therefore they are the favourites.

Well, now they are 4th favourites, behind Arsenal 🙂
