Our weekly update of the Watchlist rankings is rolled out this afternoon. We analyse the keeper and defender movement in the new standings – Tottenham’s premium options hold steady near the summit as the fixtures continue to appeal, whilst Swansea’s main assets rise up the rankings in light of their eye-catching schedule.

The Goalkeepers

There’s little movement amongst the top five options between the sticks. Liverpool’s Simon Mignolet remains in pole position – the only backline option to have played very game for the Merseysiders so far as Brendan Rodgers tinkers with his formation, the Belgian prepares for a potentially profitable run of fixtures to consolidate his spot at the top of the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) keeper standings.

Artur Boruc drops down to third in spite of registering a fourth clean sheet in six – essentially, the Southampton defenders propensity for picking up bonus points is denting the Pole’s appeal, though he remains an outstanding contender in the cut-price bracket.

Michel Vorm moves up into second as a result of Swansea’s superb upcoming schedule. After registering two clean sheets in the opening six, the Dutchman looks to offer far greater potential over the next few matches (sou, SUN, WHM, car, STO, ful) and with Ashley Williams still an ankle concern, Vorm’s prospects of save point points could be all the more crucial for those looking for a way into Michael Laudrup’s defensive options.

Tottenham’s Hugo Lloris and United’s David De Gea hold steady in fourth and fifth respectively. Lloris has three home games and a trip to Villa in the next five – with just two goals conceded so far this term, he’s been superb between the sticks for the north London outfit but with Kyle Walker and Jan Vertonghen both offering attacking potential and greater chance of bonus points, Lloris’ appeal is slightly dented. De Gea looks the only guaranteed starter amongst David Moyes’ defensive options as the United boss rests and rotates – the fixtures remain strong, though two clean sheets in six somewhat tempers our enthusiasm.

Wojciech Szczesny and Petr Cech move slightly up this week’s refresh as the fixtures improve defensively for Arsenal and Chelsea – with more attack-minded options in their respective backlines, the duo fail to find a way into our top five, though. Further down the rankings, David Marshall and Allan McGregor’s budget appeal and likelihood of save points keeps the promoted pair in our thinking – they offer alternatives to Boruc for those holding Southampton defenders who are reluctant to double up on Mauricio Pochettino’s troops.

The Defenders

Jan Vertonghen remains at the summit this week as Spurs prepare for an eye-catching schedule. The Belgian has earned at least one bonus point every time his side have registered a clean sheet – a major factor in our decision to give him the nod over the less-expensive Kyle Walker – while the attacking potential that harvested five goals in 2012/13 is also another factor here.

We stick with Nemanja Vidic in second despite – or, in a sense, because of – his omission from United’s encounter with West Brom last weekend. The thinking here is that David Moyes will surely have learned his lesson when it comes to rotating his skipper – with Rio Ferdinand missing the midweek match against Shakhtar due to a groin injury, Moyes can simply ill-afford to bench Vidic yet again as he looks to recover from a dismal domestic start.

Swansea’s Chico climbs into third spot this week as a result of his upcoming schedule. With Ashley Williams’ ankle injury still proving problematic, his fellow centre-half offers the type of pass completion statistics which look tailor-made to boost his bonus point appeal should the Swans keep out their opponents. Ben Davies offers a similarly-priced alternative but with Neil Taylor recently returning from injury, his security of starts is not quite on a par with the Spaniard’s.

Games against City, Spurs and Liverpool in the next six are enough to nudge Leighton Baines down into fourth. Everton are handed a mixed set of short-term fixtures but, as Baines highlighted in Gameweek 5 at West Ham, his dead-ball ability means he is always liable to produce the points even when his side do concede – with the new bonus points system also favouring the left-back, he remains high in this week’s standings.

Nathaniel Clyne is our Southampton defender of choice. The Saints have yet to concede since his return to the first XI in Gameweek 4 and with four bonus points accrued in his previous three appearances, the right-back looks an outstanding value option at just 4.4 – at least 0.3 less than any other defensive team-mate.

We keep faith with Branislav Ivanovic as our Chelsea defender of choice. While John Terry is an obvious – and cheaper – alternative and has picked up more Fantasy returns, the Serbian’s goal threat remains the most impressive of the pair and could well come to fruition over the next few matches, with Jose Mourinho’s side squaring up to Norwich, Cardiff, Newcastle and West Brom in the next five.

A out of position move to the left of Liverpool’s midfield helps Jose Enrique climb up the rankings. Brendan Rodgers’ decision to shift to 3-4-1-2 bodes well for the Reds left-back and with Palace, West Brom and Fulham all paying visit in the next five, Enrique could be primed to improve upon a record which has earned just one assist so far. The fact he’s also picked up more bonus points that any Liverpool defensive option also bolsters the 6.2 priced defender’s appeal, though Aly Cissokho is expected back after the international break to put pressure on the Spaniard’s starting role. Rodgers admitted earlier today that the recent change in tactics depends on the players available, perhaps a hint that he may shift back to a four-man defence once Glen Johnson is fit to start on the right again. Enrique may not be for the long-term, then but, while Agger regains full fitness, he’s an attractive option.

Laurent Koscielny gets the nod over Per Mertesacker at the back for Arsenal. Despite the recent return of Thomas Vermaelen, the duo remain secure in the heart of the Gunners defence and look more guaranteed of starts than Arsene Wenger’s full-backs, though with one clean sheet in five, the north London side have struggled to keep their opponents at bay.

Stoke’s Marc Wilson remains a viable budget option at 4.5. A role in central midfield also increases his appeal, whilst Mark Hughes’ side will be desperate to recover from last week’s home loss to Norwich and take advantage of their upcoming favourable schedule. Pablo Zabaleta’s stock remains relatively low due to City’s dire defensive away form, whilst the return of Micah Richards also hands the Argentine’s owners a potential headache after he was dropped for the midweek Champions League clash with Bayern.

Just outside of our listings, Hull City’s Abdoulaye Faye offers the premium rock bottom budget option, right now. Priced at 3.9, he collected a clean sheet with bonus against West Ham and has three favourable KC Stadium encounters in the next six. James Chester may return to threaten his start by that stage.

Statistic which i personally find amazing:

Of all ever present goalkeepers the MOST saves made is 27... By Mignolet

The FEWEST saves made is 12 by Boruc.

This shows to me that a) Southampton really are defending brilliantly and b) Liverpool aren't, more mignolet has been their star.

Yes true except for liverpool, theyve had games against low scoring teams. But for a keeper to only need to make an average of one save every 45 mins is impressive whoever you play in this league.

This is the last one. Don't want to be p*ssing people off.

Spurs have won 15 and lost just two of their last 25 London derbies at home in the Barclays Premier League (D8).

West Ham have fired in just 14 shots on target in the league this season. Spurs surpassed this tally in their third game of 2013-14.

Just one of the five goals that West Ham have conceded in the Premier League this season has come from open play.

Tottenham have attempted more shots from open play than any other side in the Barclays Premier League this term (69).

Andros Townsend has attempted more shots (14 - excluding blocked) than any other player yet to score in the Premier League this season.

Only Roma's Morgan De Sanctis (91%) has a better saves to shots ratio than Hugo Lloris (89%) of all regular goalkeepers in the top five European Leagues so far in 2013-14.

No side has played in more 0-0 draws in the Premier League since the start of last season than West Ham United (7, the same as Stoke).

Spurs' players have touched the ball 159 times in the opposition box this season; more often than any other side.

Tottenham have lost only one of their last 16 Premier League games at White Hart Lane (W11 D4).

West Ham have won just 10 points in their last 10 Premier League London derbies (W3 D1 L6), losing the last four in a row.

I had a 50-50 call on this and went with Moses. Biggest mistake ever. Ramsey is in the form of his life (like he is the real deal right now), and Moses really isnt. He's also playing in a deeper position so is unlikely to score THAT many points. Ramsey on the other hand looks really sharp in attack and defence and is getting into the box at the right times.

I have no FT and thinking of a -4 hit taking out Brady for Ozil?

    Or vertonghen in for Chester?

    Mignolet, Given

    Vidic, Coleman, Turner, Turner, Chester

    Michu, Ramsey, HBA, Whittingham, Brady

    Suarez, Soldado, Lukaku

I have £7m in the bank

    This is my current team:

    Mignolet/Harper
    Mertesacker, Zabaleta, Walker, Clyne
    Özil, Mirallas, Sigurdsson
    Suárez (C), Sturridge, Giroud
    (Nolan, Ward, Williams)

My team is ready for this week (took a -4 hit), but I'm unsure what to do over the international break.

    A) Wildcard? Midfield needs sorting out, then there is Zabaleta who needs to be dealt with...also don't want SAS over the long term, really want Lukaku for Sturridge My cheap Palace players could be replaced by better cheapies (Ward -> Faye for example.)
    B) Wait until after the internationals, if there are no injuries, just take a hit and do Nolan, Mirallas -> Michu, Whittingham? (Then Sturridge -> Lukaku in the next gameweek).

WC is also really tempting because of the price rises, if I wait too long, I may not be able to afford the players I want (especially Lukaku and Michu).

He was due an explosion on the stats tables before injury, was unlucky to not get 3 when they played Sunderland and plays the furthest forward along with Giroud so he'll be going straight back in.

I want Mata (maybe for Michu/Eriksen?) as well if he nails a spot down and Jose stops being silly.

Yeah I had Wally until his injury, it was frustrating with Giroud, Ramsey and Ozil doing well. I have Rams and Ozil now, I'll be raging if I miss a Walcott points haul when he gets back!

Mata is high on my watch list, but I'm just short that .2 without shredding my team over the break, although 2FT may make it easier.

    A. Play JWP this week (SWA) and have 2 FT's over the international break
    B. Replace JWP/Brady with a midfielder up to 5.8 this week

What's better? Leaning towards A myself. JWP is guaranteed a 1-pointer but I am not sure anyone in that price bracket will do a lot better this week? Maybe Whittingham (NEW). But even then, having an additional FT for the next two weeks to be able to deal with bandwagons, injuries, players coming back from injury, etc sounds appealing.

I have the same problem with Brady but the way I see it, you'll use a transfer to get rid of him for a 5.8 player that you will sooner rather than later use another transfer to get rid of. it depends on how long term the incoming player is in your plans. I think Im going to keep so as that I have 2FT after the break.

Even websites are influenced by their writers' FPL teams!

You won't find a bookies which favours rooney to score over RVP that's for sure, but a lot of top FPL players have sold RVP and will therefore do their best to igbore his exidtence.. me included! (except im not 'top')

On a side note... This is why i've decided to base captaincy choices on goalscorer odds, and team selection too (using clean sheet odds for defence)

Last yr my captaincy definitely suffered badly due to punts and me thinking i knew better than I did. I remember realising my vice captain had outscored my captain by a considerable margin!

And on a side side note... pretty much every response on this siteote can lead you to a high chance of guessing which player is in the user's team

People go on about how their defender is going to do well this week because a certain butterfly shat on his windowsill and it's lucky, he's wearing an orange bib on his ankle, etc etc,.

Truth is theyre just making themselves feel better.

How can i be so sure? I catch myself doing it all the time!

I don't know who to bring in for Mirallas, for a one week punt. Planning on WCing next week. Any chance of Kagawa or Nani to start this weekend? Basing this option on the fact that Sunderland are terrible. Otherwise I'm set on Whittingham.

Is Neil Taylor really a threat for Davies? Last season Davies played 37 games, Taylor played 6 and Davies seems to be first pick for Wales too.

Taylor was injured for pretty much the whole season last year. Davies seems to have played himself into the starting RB role so should be safe for now in league games, though it's worth monitoring.

Taylor was out injured (broke his leg?) for almost all of last season, which explains last year's stats.

Davies has done well and certainly seems first choice, but Taylor is more senior and is a threat.

That said, I'm still tempted to get Davies

Southampton vs. Swansea. Michu in for me......next week!

There have only been seven goals scored in the six Barclays Premier League games involving Southampton in 2013-14; a league-low.

Swansea have won their last two Barclays Premier League away matches - they have never won three away games in a row in the competition.

Michu has created more goalscoring chances in the Barclays Premier League this season than any other player (15) - all of which have been from open play.

Swansea have received more yellow cards than any other Premier League side in 2013-14 so far (15).

Southampton have been given the fewest cards in the Premier League so far this season (5Y 0R), despite conceding the joint-most fouls (83).

The Saints have allowed their opponents just 14 shots on target in their six Premier League games so far this season; fewer than any other side.

The next goal that Swansea score in the Premier League will be their 100th in the competition.

Southampton have conceded just two goals in their six PL games this season and have kept three successive clean sheets in the competition.

The Saints last kept four successive clean sheets in the Premier League back in September 2003.

The Swans have kept two clean sheets in a row away from home - they have never kept three consecutive clean sheets on the road in the Premier League.
