634x258 The Knee Jerk

Saturday left Fantasy managers considering their expensive front lines once again, as Newcastle’s mid-price Frenchman maintained his stunning form. The headlines were to be snatched from him, however, as a United youngster delivered a performance that possibly announced the arrival of the next major Fantasy bandwagon.

The Game Changer

Alan Pardew’s post-Goodison tinkering shifted Loic Remy back to the left of a front three, with Papiss Cisse recalled in the central role but the move did little to quell the Frenchman’s goal threat. A first half brace at Cardiff from Remy sealed a precious three points and took his tally since his arrival in the North East to five in four starts.

Mentioned in Monday night’s Knee Jerk, at the time, considering Remy as a serious candidate for a slot in our three-man frontline seemed optimistic having witnessed the performance of Romelu Lukaku. While the Belgian also put continued pressure on those three places with a fourth goal of his Everton tenancy at City, Remy won further admiring glances as Fantasy managers contemplated whether the pair, both currently priced under 8.0 in the Fantasy Premier League game, could possibly keep pace with more expensive options.

Goals from Daniel Sturridge and Luis Suarez again confirmed their current “near essential” status but, should Olivier Giroud stutter at West Brom on Sunday, Fantasy managers may look to the Gunners striker, along with Wayne Rooney and Robin van Persie, and consider both Remy and Lukaku as cheaper replacements to free up cash. With Fantasy managers perhaps attempting to find differentials and break up template teams, Remy, who was removed with 20 minutes to go as a precautionary measure, could prove to be a key target who could liberate funds for a refresh at the back and in midfield.

The Underused

Fantasy managers may just have been handed another gift. Adnan Januzaj was one of the pre-season starlets who left us wondering if he could possibly break through into the first team ranks. However, when it came to gambling on a cheap United asset, it was new signing Wilfred Zaha which drew the most pre-season interest. Now, six Gameweeks in, while Zaha stil has more owners than Antonio Valencia and Shinji Kagawa, it’s Januzaj who has suddenly emerged as a the “prospect”.

Encouraging displays off the bench earned the 18-year-old Belgian a first start at the Stadium of Light and he took his chance spectacularly. His poise, balance and fearless display, was capped with two stunning goals. It left Fantasy managers scrambling to the player list, excitedly realising that, in Januzaj, a gem had been unearthed.

Priced at just 4.6 in the FPL, could it be that we’re about to witness another huge budget midfield bandwagon to rival those or Aaron Ramsey and Ross Barkley?

While his security of start in the long-term will be in question, certainly we’d have to expect Januzaj to retain the shirt for Gameweek 8’s home clash with Southampton. With Stoke to follow at Old Trafford a week later, there is clear potential for the young Belgian to go on delivering. With Robin van Persie and Wayne Rooney blanking and Fantasy managers looking to gain coverage of United’s potential over their forthcoming home matches, Januzaj arrival on the scene could not be better timed.

The Selection Poser

Ben Arfa’s omission from Pardew’s teamsheet at Cardiff was perhaps not a surprise. The Newcastle boss used terms such as “balance” and “consistency” following Monday night’s first half horror show at Goodison. There’s little question that Newcastle were a better side in the second half on Monday without Ben Arfa – a player who has always struggled to find any degree of consistency throughout his chequered career.

Today, Newcastle’s performance was, for long spells, supremely convincing. Cabaye flourished in the engine room and Remy, in Ben Arfa’s position on the left, won the game for the Magpies.

While his talent will surely surface again, it’s perhaps unlikely that we’ll see Ben Arfa in the starting lineup for the visit of Liverpool in Gameweek 8. Pardew will be boosted by the three points and with Jonas Guiterrez also returning as a hardworking option out wide, Ben Arfa looks set to face a wait to prove a point.

His Fantasy owners are unlikely to hold and wait for Pardew to work him back into his lineup. Ben Arfa’s price had risen to 7.5 from 7.0 in the FPL by Gameweek 6 but, having dipped to 7.4 this week, the winger is already the most sold midfielder just hours after Saturday’s final whistle. With the two-week break now looming, a significant price drop looks likely as Fantasy managers trade in to pick up the likes of Aaron Ramsey, Ross Barkley and even Adnan Januzaj.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

I have decided I'm going to do a -8 and do 4 transfers to sort my team out.

Is it wise to wait until after the games tomorrow (and probably the internationals too), or do I need to be getting Suarez and Lukaku in right now?

I hate having to make the decision now!

I feel Januzaj could get what Suso had at Liverpool last season - Rodgers played him in the first team until he signed a new contract, and then dropped him at the first sign of poor form.

I'd expect Januzaj to be made a lot of promises about gametime and to play quite a bit until he signs a new contract at United, after which he won't be such an automatic pick, and will get less substitute appearances.

Am I being too cynical about this?

But Ramsey is starting to seem like a completely different player to my preconceptions of him - that is one of the hardest things in Fantasy Football - getting over your innate biases that put you off players because you don't rate them or because they play for the wrong team that you don't expect to do well

It must have taken Moyes a hell of a lot of courage to start Januzaj today. United went into the Sunderland game with just 7 points from 6 games, and with that record you pick the players you trust to dig you out of a hole.

To start an 18 year old speaks volumes. There'll be a lot making flippant comments about him not being nailed on, but if ever there is a time for him to earn back to back starts, it is after scoring a brace and after the international break when the more senior players have been involved in games for their country and travelling.

We have to remember that Januzaj scored these goals away from home. Short of any misfortune over the next fortnight, I think he's nailed on to start against Southampton at Old Trafford, and therefore it's his spot to lose.

Yes, he's not going to play every game from now on in, but that's not the point. A 4.6m attacking mid playing alongside the likes of Van Persie and Rooney? Yes, please.

Nope. Good post. And agree with it. I think he should be safe enough for the next few weeks atleast. Ashley Young looks to be in the dog house, Moyes doesn't seem to rate Kagawa, and Valencia's been very poor this season. Nani is starting under Moyes but Januzaj has just as much claim, if not more now to be ahead of him in the pecking order too. He's been great in his cameos aswell. Moyes even said he wanted to give Januzaj a start earlier. My only concern is he's 18, and won't start every game. He won't be this good all the time either, likewise his competition won't stay being this dire. So i'm thinking a good punt for the next few GW's till we get a better picture, but in the long term, the reliabilty of Whittingham, Brady and Barkley will come to light and make them better in general

Absolutely, agree 100% with that, Demi (and said as much below in my replies).

Moyes will also be trying to win the hearts of United fans, and to offer them up an 18 year old, technically gifted winger, just couldn't be any more perfect!

He'll be a star that will most likely burn bright and fade quickly - or be used sparingly - but from an FPL point of view, he's hot right now.

I'd have Brady and Barkley ahead of Janazaj but seeing as they're showing the form to be more than just bench warmers, then Janazaj makes a great 5th mid.

My worry isnt how good the lad is its Moyes

He has shown in the past that if a young player has a dodgy game hes banished for a while.

I can't answer that, time will tell.

But, that is the most likely outcome, I admit. It's how Fergie treated the likes of Giggs and Sharpe at the beginning, to nurture their development. You can play youngsters when you're winning and they're confident (look at Sterling last year for Liverpool), what's surprised me is how Moyes turned to Januzaj when the Utd team wasn't doing well, and away from home.

you think an 18 year academy graduate who just played his first game for the club is now a "nailed on" starter for Man Utd?

You don't think he'll start vs Southampton?

And to answer your question, until they get him to sign a contract extension, yes.

That's how I feel, he is tempting.

But I usually prefer to have a nailed on cheap mid who can at least get 2 points when necessary
That said, I'm sick of Kim, who has played every game but has conjured no attacking returns.

When getting a cheap mid do you want one that will score 2, 2, 2, 2, 2, 13
      Or one that will score 2, 5, 2, 7, 3, 4

As there aren't many weeks that you play your budget midfielder in normal scenarios, unless they pull a Charlie Adam at Blackpool effect, when a £5m mid can be played every week, most can't

One of the troubles with Januzaj is that he will likely have lots of bench cameos of 30 minutes or less, so you can't even start him and let autosubs sort things out if he doesn't play, as he's very capable of sub 1 pointers

While the aim of this game is to score as many points as possible, what can help with that is building team value early in the season.

Januzaj has price, team and fixtures all on his side. It's easy to jump off in a week or two having made a profit and pick up the next big thing.

I wouldn't advocate points hits for these short term moves though.

Zabaleta - Vidic - Dawson Clyne Chester (Inj)

    Ozil - Lampard - Moses - Ramsey - Barkley

    Sturridge - Rooney - Giroud

Until Lampard plays/doesn't play, Moses looks like the candidate for the exit, right?
