Double-pivot Fantasy assets and knowing when to dump a poorly-performing player were among the key discussions on the boards this week. We also heard from some of the community’s quieter members in an epic post and look back at the latest action in the community leagues.

Hottest Topics

Dufflinks has highlighted an emerging theory as to why players such as Aaron Ramsey and Yaya Toure have emerged as a greater source of points this season. Both play in a double pivot role, Dufflinks argues, and are able to bomb forward while defences deal with the more established attacking threat of a striker and three attacking midfielders. Judging by Ramsey’s lacklustre performance on the right wing against West Brom in Gameweek 7, this is perhaps a theory with some credibility.

At what point does the ownership of a player become so huge that to ignore them runs the risk of a dramatic fall in the rankings? The Sarjeant’s discussion on this issue will prove particularly interesting reading for those without Ramsey, who is owned by almost half of all Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers.

Tinkerman posed a question for those who use the site, but rarely take part in discussions, asking what would make them comment more often? What followed was one of the most epic discussions we’ve ever seen, with more than 200 replies. It was great to hear from those posters who rarely comment – Tinkerman’s post gave them the courage to wade into a community discussion for the first time. We’ve also been given lots of requests for new features within this thread, which we will consider over the coming weeks.

Ever thought about just quitting Fantasy football? Of course not. No matter how bad a Gameweek is we always come back for more. Not so for BennyDeBull though. He’s quit FPL after seven years, deleting his account in the process, after a particularly bad start to the season. Adios Benny. In his memory we decided to ask the community if they have ever walked away from their team or ruined it through hits. For most of us it turns out no matter how bad it gets we can’t resist coming back for more – Roscola also revealed that ignoring his team in a fit of pique ended up boosting his rank.

Instead of ditching an entire team, the more sensible ploy after a bad start is of course to ditch the worst players. But timing is crucial when dumping a player, warns The Dark Defender. His hot topic asked when is the best time to get rid, with history and experience of being burnt before emerging as key factors in his decision.

Scored asked just why is it not a good idea to double up on strikers? With Liverpool’s “SAS” strike-force of Luis Suarez and Daniel Sturridge both performing well, why not acquire both? With the duo in such compelling form it is a very persuasive argument indeed.

Wakey has delivered an update on his Falling Stars, the name he gives to those who have dropped in price but could be set for a points haul over the coming weeks. Romelu Lukaku once again delivered, as did Patrice Evra. Meanwhile, waiting patiently on his bench for the Gameweeks ahead are Christian Benteke (now down to 8.8) Theo Walcott (9.2)and Glen Johnson (5.8). Wakey has also looked at the number of risers and fallers by team. His findings prove surprising reading, especially for Manchester United fans.

Finally, Deme’l’ God teamed up with us for a joint hot topic this week on whether we can learn anything from those currently in the top ten.

Community Leagues

The scouting stage of FFS UEFA’s Beach Soccer World Cup team tournament is now in full swing ahead of its launch in Gameweek 8. We’ve dedicated an article to the competition – those interested should use this as the place for discussion on the tournament.

Meanwhile FFS UEFA’s FA Cup themed tournament saw 116 winners emerge from Gameweek 7. They will now be joined by 44 teams from Conference North and Conference South for the Second Round Qualifying. The draw can be found here.

In Tommy We Trust’s six All Things league leaders going into Gameweek 8 are La Roja, Chilin_Dude, LawnDart, Snevitz, Crouch Potato and Binij. Tommy has also released a cup competition with a £50 prize starting in Gameweek 10. It’s called All Things 50 Quid and more details can be found here.

HeelsOverHead’s Worst To First- 2 Million+ Club, for those with an overall rank below two million in the first five Gameweeks has a new leader Barboa II, who has climbed to 221,725th. Of the 23 involved, 11 are now in the top 1,000,000.

Dogba is the new main league leader of the It’s A Long and Winding Road competition. Its head to head league leaders are Hay Number 2, Gaz Downright, IAmSuarez, Beric, Super Hans, ManAmongst and Iain_90.

In Thomas and Peppie&Felix‘s Friends Life the league leaders remain Thomass, Daniel and Al Pacino.

Something we already discussed yesterday regarding RVP, Rooney, Sturridge and Suarez. All of them probably essential in fantasy when playing up front on their own unless they are 14 mil like RVP.

Now looking at how bleak RVP and Rooney have been and Suarez and Sturridge taking turns in dominant games so far despite the points not suggesting so( Sturridge only had 1 shot 2 games ago, and Suarez only had 2 shots last game)

The question that comes from this is this: Does anyone know a player who has been great for FPL while playing in a system with 2 up front when neither is behind the other player? I cant think of any. If this is so, I think both of these awesome pairings could deliver mediocre results this season and guys like Lukaku, Tekkers, Remy could be the way to go unless Arsenal buy anyone good.

Rooney has scored 3 goals and provided 2 assists in 5 games and 28mins, in a misfiring Utd team. Not what I would regard as bleak.

Rooney has been great, I just got worried after the SUN game where he only had 1 shot in the game. And all the games have came from shots outside the box which usually convert at a rate of about 5%. He is not getting in the box that much. I am keeping faith for 3 more but still not convinced he will be great for the season as he has never done it while being in a 2 striker partnership as well.

I agree with what you say, however regarless of the outside the box stats, he is getting himself into the box on a regular basis. It is worth watch a large portion of the Sunderland game, where in fact on regular occasions he was stood six yards out waiting for a delivery to him. Should Utd take charge of the game v Saints at home I I woul expect more of this.

Ba & Cisse used to sometimes play 4-4-2 and one would still reap the points (think it was Cisse at first and then Ba this season).

But it always was one behind the other and when Cisse came in Ba played on the wing the whole time. and the half season before Ba left Cisse played on the wing after he had stopped scoring. In this system many have flourished like RVP last season with Roo behind him, Rooney with Tevez or Berbatove behind him. And many more. You can look up some old team maps from soccernet for confirmation, and it was always the most forward one to benefit from that. Do you remember Ba not scoring any goals when Cisse came in and Cisse not scoring any once Ba was moved back up front after a few games the next season.

I know it was usually one wide in a 4-3-3 but I'm certain they played 4-4-2 sometimes with both of them playing central (Barfa was shafted to RM and became a rubbish FPL prospect during those periods).

I can think of Drogba only. Anelka and Drogba upfront in the season where we won the double (FA and the EPL).

I think Suarez, and maybe even RVP will do well. RVP is class we know, its all about the form here. As for Suarez, we haven't seen much of him this season, but whatever we've seen was quality. Majority of the players will be having them, and they are explosive enough. I would definitely still have one of those in my team at all times.

Suarez is great, but Rodgers said at the start of the season that Sturridge will remain central and Suarez will probably play on the wing. This is considering they will switch to a 4-2-3-1 once GJ and Cout are back. I wonder how that will affect him. Suarez is currently on 4.5 shots per game that is almost a shot less than last season, I know we have a small sample size but both have been easy games so I am a bit surprised and not sure what will happen next.

Last season they also had about 5pts per game while together and 7.5 while playing alone. Sample size quite small again but still.

I do remember that we shifted to a 4-3-3 that season, with Malouda and Anelka on the wings and DD upfront. Though I don't exactly remember where we changed it. We started the season with a 4-4-2 diamond though.

I think however they line up, it's clear sturridge and suarez have an understanding with each other, rodgers has called them false 9s, they're both strikers who understand what kind of delivery a striker would want, so are willing to find each other when the possibility arises. They both trust each other in knowing if they nail the pass the other will be able to finish. Liverpool last season were scoring routs in a number of games, even before Coutinho arrived. They simply have two strikers who can convert any chance into a goal.

I'm not giving either up, but it's hard to know which that would be, and for who. Definitely not Rooney or Giroud, people seem to forget that those teams have other players who can score whereas Liverpool don't. For Arsenal see Walcott, or any number of midfielders. For united, see rvp, now januzaj, or nani. Unless Liverpool get a penalty and Gerrard scores, i see sturridge and suarez getting 95% of the goals. Last season Henderson got a few, and Gerrard did score in open play, but it's not happened this season so far.

Great topic. I think with the fluidity of many attacking teams' play, any of the attacking players get into goalscoring positions in a team like Liverpool and I think both SAS will have chances to both score and assist.

      yes. suarez and sturridge.

there's only one way you can play 2 centre forwards in modern football and not screw up and that's the way liverpool are doing it, 3-5-2/3-4-1-2.
this is a once in a season opportunity this back 3 formation for a top club and i think it's a no-brainer to double up on suarez and sturridge on the back of it.

the 3-5-2 should not be in the same discussion as man utd and man city. it's unique in premier league terms and on that basis a one-off opportunity. given that neither suarez or sturridge are the types to take a back seat the pair should completely monopolise the goals for liverpool

        Thanks, I see what you're saying, it's psychological... just don't feel comfortable with a £5.5m, £5.1m & £4.4m midfield (Barkley, Brady & Jedinak)

Paulinho is an option at £7m for Spurs cover, but I've seen people on here looking to dump him, not bring him in!

I mean if you want Chelsea coverage and a guaranteed start, why not take ramires? sure he has not gotten any points thus far, but given his price and guarantee to start, it may pay dividends? If you are not going the route of Chelsea, then I would consider Paulinho, he has been getting into the box quite a bit. Much more than Eriksen has been.

Lampard was £13.6m back in 2009/10 so £7.9m must be a steal, right?! 🙂

I might just leave it another week and hope HBA get's some minutes... I've got bigger problems in defence at the moment, so the transfer might be better spent there, but thanks for your help

Don't get inferior players for coverage, either go for Oscar because he is currently performing or Hazard/Mata if you believe they are about to go on a scoring rampage (I'm not convinced by either of them yet).

I think Jedinak is a problem as you're never going to want to play him, he forces you to play your other cheap mids every week without taking fixtures into account. You are also not going to make any money out of him.
You must have a lot of cash tied up in other areas of the pitch, maybe over the next two weeks you could downgrade someone and upgrade Jedinak and HBA?

It's tied up in a Rooney, Suarez and Sturridge front line... but agree, Jedinak is the problem, more so with Brady injured and my reluctance to transfer him out for a hit

I come here occasionally to keep up to date with things I might not otherwise see (injuries & frisking fixtures in particular). Was interested to see the banter about player who chucked it in after 7 seasons. We're only 7 GWs in! Bur fair enough, if you're not enjoying it then it can be hard to persevere. Does seem like a serious knee-jerk though. Would be interested to know why. RVP not firing? Something else?

I won the FFS Playon thing last week so finally got a return after weeks of nearly-rans where one player not starting (e.g. Siggy or Gardner 2-3-4 weeks back, out of many) was the diff between getting something or nothing. So thanks to you all for your insight and anorakism. I would say that excessive tinkering and taking it too seriously has a detrimental effect. It's easy to go overboard with transfers when having a good backbone and hoping for the best with your differentials is as good as you can realistically do. The last few GWs with playon, I was tinkering too much instead of concentrating on a starting XI with 5-6 strong options and filling the rest with players who would complete at least an hour, whether or not they did anything special. This week was my lowest admin time on the game by far and I got lucky. There just is a certain degree of luck in this game, in team performances not going against expectation (e.g TOT whu last week) or in last minute injuries or selection curveballs. It is what it is.

Anyway thanks and keep up the good work with the site.

    Why 3-5-2 is the future

Ok so everyone goes on about 4-2-3-1 but liverpool are tearing it up playing 352. Some teams in europe do really well with it as well.

With 352 you've got 3 center backs and two wing backs that get you width. They can attack or defend so they can take care of wingers.

Three center backs can easily deal with one or even two strikers. Which means there is an extra center back to defend against one of the attacking midfielders.

You've then got three midfielders giving you the bodies in midfield. Two can pick up any more midfielders your opponent has got.

Then you've got the attacking midfielder for us its moses could be coutinho linking up the play. Then you've got two strikers with a good understanding and great finishing. At least one of them will drop deep and create.

Means two center backs on opposition get stretched everywhere and their double pivot is al over the place because you've got the man in the hole and your box to box midfielders plus your wingers.

Its the next big thing for sure

Liverpool only beat Palace and Sunderland...

It is harder for centre backs to play in a back 3 than back 4. Also the wing backs need to be great going forward and going back. It is an okay formation, but where has it been used successfully recently? Hasn't worked for Juve in the CL, nor did it work for Man City when they tried it, nor did it work for Napoli when they used a back 3.

You were 100% correct, according to team maps. They played 2 up front and Drogba flourished. I guess it takes 1 of them to become the more dominant figure and the other to assist more with Anelka getting 7 assists.

09/10 Drogba got 29 and Anelka only 11, so one of the pairing still has to suffer. I suspect Drogba was still furthest up front with Anelka tucked in behind like Roo and RVP last season(before the midfield role ofcourse.

no stats or teammaps for that era, but I am afraid it is a sort of a rule that 2 cant be excellent at the same time in terms of fantasy. It would just be too much goals. And in terms of excellent i mean 22-25 goals at least

In the 96-97 season Ferdinand got 16 goals and Shearer got 25 goals. Not quite hitting the heights that you're stating but still quite strong.

Great point you make though (I have SAS and dropped Rooney for Lukaku)

Ivanovic Touré Parr Collins Mertesacker (Collins,Parr)

    Silva Sigurdsson Ramsey HBA (Thomas)

I've got 1FT and.3m in the bank. What do you think? I'm willing to take -4 hit and do 2 changes.

Lukaku is more of a must than Giroud or Rooney imo

Par! Parr! You need to work on your Parr game. Might need to ditch Collins too, since TOmkins has his spot now. Silva hasn't done anything to warrant inclusion--for his price. Like SIggy and Ramsey, but dat HBA needs to GT*O. Thomas? Who is Thomas?

Solid strikers, not sold on Roooney, but who cares what I think since he's still banging in goals and assists.

The huge investment from foreign owners with short-term goals has more often than not led to the signing of foreign players at their peak rather than youth development.

Young players need more chances at the top level in England.

Nobody ever thinks of the foreign owners, it's not their job to make the England national team better. They're investing millions in a football club, and want/need to gain profit on that investment or else! You don't pump $100 million into a club to build a strong English national team through your club-level youth development. The pressure should be on English owners of clubs to do this, but not on a foreigner trying to turn a profit.

I'd go with Mert and Terry and anyone of the others as the 3rd.

hmm interesting. I think Spurs are more solid at the back than Arsenal.
Mert has the goal threat but Walker could make up for that as he is very attacking.

            Thanks for your advice.

I am currently on Terry, Mert, Evra, Clyne, Chico

Good afternoon all. This is my current set up:

    Migs
    Chester Turner Vidic Coleman Walker
    Ozil Ramsey Whittingham Brady Eriksen
    Suarez Lukaku Giroud.

I have 4.6m in the bank & i'm currently planning on Whittingham -> Michu (Brady 5th midfielder). Can anyone see anything different I could be considering or could I even possibly save the transfer (No plan in mind with 2 free transfers)
