Aaron Ramsey has recovered from a leg problem and is set to captain Wales this evening. Ashley Williams may be out for the next three league games. Martin Jol concedes Darren Bent may have to accept a role on the bench for Fulham, Ben Foster is still six weeks away from a return, while Newcastle could be set for a defensive boost ahead of a tough run of fixtures:

Ramsey Recovered from Leg Problem

Wales boss Chris Coleman has revealed that Aaron Ramsey was subbed off in Arsenal’s draw at West Brom last weekend due to a leg problem. The Gunners in-form midfielder has now recovered, though, and is in line to captain his country against Macedonia tonight.

“He has got a knock, he came off for Arsenal at the weekend with a dead leg and we have been managing that. He will not train today but we expect him to be available for Friday night.”

The Scout Says: Certainly, the news is somewhat surprising, given that Arsene Wenger failed to mention any problem last Sunday. Ramsey’s owners will be a little relieved, though – it was assumed he was withdrawn on 59 minutes at the Hawthorns for tactical or form reasons after Wenger had shifted him onto the right flank against the midlands outfit. Now, however, it transpires that Ramsey (who had played every minute of the league campaign prior to the 1-1 draw) was only removed as a result of the knock; suggesting his game time looks secure once again ahead of next weekend’s home game with Norwich.

Williams May Face Further Time On the Sidelines

Coleman also took time out to elaborate on Ashley Williams’ ankle injury after the centre-half was ruled out of both Wales’ upcoming matches.

“We scanned him and it was clear he could not play. Michael Laudrup said he had him on the bench at Southampton just as a number, and looking at the injury I can see that he was never going to play. But it was good to have him here and take a look for ourselves. I am not sure when he will be back, but I am not sure he will be back for the next two or three games after this international camp.”

The Scout Says: Williams has now featured in just one of his side’s last six matches in all competitions and if Coleman’s prognosis proves correct, he’s be set to miss back-to-back home games against Sunderland and West Ham, with question marks also hanging over his availability for the Gameweek 10 derby against Cardiff. Given that Ben Davies is also a doubt with a hamstring injury, Chico – highlighted in last night’s members article – looks the more secure route into the Swans backline right now, though with just two clean sheets in the opening seven, Michael Laudrup’s side haven’t been the most resilient at the back thus far.

Jol Hints at Bent Sub Role

Martin Jol has admitted he is struggling to find room for Darren Bent in his starting XI this term. The Fulham boss conceded the on-loan forward may have to become a little more accustomed to game time off the bench as he looks to steer his side up the table:

”I’ve seen him a couple of times and spoken to him, and the conversation was private. I said it would be awful if I don’t use him in a proper way and he will be a good part of things this season. He knows what my intentions are, but it is not my intention to play Berbatov and Bent [together], I have to be honest. Sometimes he can’t start. I was very happy with Bent coming on in the Stoke game. It’s great to have someone like Darren to come off the bench. My intentions are still to use Darren, and to get the best out of both him and Berbatov, but it’s not easy because you need time to work on that system.”

The Scout Says: Despite climbing off the bench to score the winner against Stoke last weekend, Bent has been slow to make an impact at the Cottage. Indeed, Fulham have lost all three games he has started, compared to just one loss in four when he has been omitted from the first XI. Jol’s chopping and changing has clearly affected Dimitar Berbatov’s season so far – having scored 16 times last term, the Bulgarian has yet to open his account as he moves between the lone forward berth and the role in “the hole”. With the pressure on last weekend, though, it was perhaps telling that Jol turned to Berbatov and Bryan Ruiz up top once again, with the duo likely to continue up top as Fulham roll up to Palace a week next Monday evening.

Foster Still Weeks Away from Return

West Brom’s Ben Foster issued an injury update yesterday. The Baggies first-choice stopper admitted that although he’s making good progress from a foot injury, he is still a month-and-a-half away from returning:

“It was always going to take up to 12 weeks. It’s going well and it’s six weeks today since I had the operation. I’ve now just started to put weight on it. “I have been limited in what I can do in the gym since the operation but things should start to pick up again now.”

The Scout Says: If Foster keeps to his schedule, then, he would be expected to return for the Gameweek 12 home derby against Villa. This would see face a potentially profitable run which also see Steve Clarke’s side face Newcastle, Norwich, Cardiff and Hull in the following five fixtures – down to 4.9 in FPL, Foster may arrive back on radars as a result of such a schedule, given that deputy Boaz Myhill has managed a single clean sheet in five since being handed a chance back in Gameweek 3.

Injuries Easing for Magpies

Alan Pardew could be set for a defensive boost in time for Newcastle’s Gameweek 8 home clash with Liverpool. Reports indicate that Steven Taylor and Massadio Haidara are edging towards fitness after recent hamstring and knee problems respectively.

The Scout Says: Whilst Haidara is likely to face a challenge to oust Davide Santon from the left-back berth, Taylor’s chances of returning to the first XI look a little more promising. The centre-half has played just 48 minutes of the season so far as a result of suspension and injury but Alan Pardew has been clearly unimpressed with Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa’s displays of late – subbed off at the break in the Gameweek 6 defeat at Everton, the Frenchman seems to have slipped behind Mike Williamson in the pecking order. An injury-free Taylor could be handed an immediate return alongside Fabricio Coloccini in the heart of defence but with Liverpool, Chelsea and Spurs in the next four, in addition to a Tyne-Wear derby, few will be tempted to invest in the Magpies backline right now.

my thoughts too. Southampton are solid at the back and Man United have not clicked at all in an offensive sense. I think it will be 1-0 or 2-0 at best.

            Thanks for replying. Appreciate it.

Basically I really really feel Silva is going to get back to his best form (he arguably already is back to his best). 4 games - 1 goal & 2 assists.

His stats are through the roof, his creativity is immense (1 chance created on average every 25 mins) and he destroys the likes of Eriksen & Yaya Toure on the comparison tool.

Imo he has better stats than Rooney on average (and I'm a United fan).

His manager has moulded some of the best players in Silva's position - Cazorla & Isco.

Silva's stats are mirroring or beating those of the season where he became a huge bandwagon and got 6 goals and 17 assists.

At £9.3 I want to pick him up cheap and as a super differential before others climb on board. (Maybe get 4 goals/assists out of him before rivals finally get him).

My next few FT will be spent on bringing in Walcott, probably Benteke and possibly Lamela once he gets game time.

Due to the massive bandwagons that get started here I thought id try and start my own anti bandwagon. This may have already been posted about but here follows the reasons I think Ramsey needs to be got rid of in your fantasy teams and certainly not transferred in.

    1) It cant continue. Unless he has done a body swap with Messi, and even if he has, he physically cant keep up his record.

    2) The secrets out. How many managers/teams/players said at the start of this season in there pre game team talk ‘make sure you watch that Ramsey with his runs from deep’. I’m guessing non. Ramsey for the most part has been a complete surprise package. Teams and players are now not so ignorant.

    3) Hes not this years Michu, he’s this years Giovanni. Michu had a great scoring record before he arrived on these shores. Ramsey does not. Michu is classed as a midfielder but often plays as a striker. Ramsey does not.

    4) He’s changed position. Wenger has realised he has a player in red hot form, so instead of leaving it, he has fixed what wasn’t broken and last game changed Ramsey’s position to an attacking mid instead of his normal deeper lying role. The result? 1 point. In his new position he is easier to mark, easier to pick up and easier to nullify.

The expression that applies - make hay while the sun shines. The sun has shone but its winter now!

I'm not saying you're wrong but you could have posted this three weeks ago - and you would have been wrong. While he remains close to the top of 'total points' for midfielders many people will transfer him in. When many people are transferrring him in I'm making even more team value on him. Arsenal still have good fixtures, Ramsay is still comparatively cheap and is still a good pick. I can't understand why anyone would transfer him out at the moment.

Yeah I see your point. It's just he becomes an anti differential for me. Sure everyone has him but that's not good for anyone if he stops scoring like he has, which inevitably, because of the reason above, will.

Give me ozil as arsenal coverage and I'm done.

For me because ozil will be consistent in his point scoring and Ramsey won't. Guess time will tell.

No clearly not! But then looking at your past ranks neither do you.

Oh and a heads up, having a good 5 games doesn't make you class it makes you a good prospect. If you want to give someone the class label then they have to do over more than one season. I think that you'll find that ozil fits that bill.

Walcott will be back soon, and when he is will start on the RW. This will either put Ramsey into his usual CM position or will force him onto the bench. I think the time to get rid is soon, but possibly not yet.

Martin Kelly says he is "fit and ready", he's potential to start against Newcastle over Toure if GJ's still out for a while, £4.2.
Also Joe Allen says "The plan is to get back into training, get a good few days leading up to the Newcastle game and hopefully I'll be available for selection from there on." - With Lucas playing in Brazil on Tuesday I reckon the £4.6 mid could get a run out at Newcastle.

It's not too unlikely that allen could gain a starting role if he plays well.

Have you been following the A-league these past few years?
If so, who would you say are the top players in the league? And top teams.

        Have absolutely no idea.

I gave it a go a few years ago and the standard was absolute rubbish imo. Giving it another chance with it being on free-to-air and looks to have really increased in standard. I probably could have guessed that with a guy like Del Piero playing now.

Fantasy football scout daily hot topic

In what ways has the new BPS altered your decisions around which players to transfer in?

For me I've gone for Yaya this year as the BPS rewards his all round passing and box to box play. Any others you think are a better prospect this year due to the new system? Or does the BPS make little difference to your decisions?

but, i've seen him get 3 bonus points whenever they got a CS last season.... in some case 2/3 bonus points even when they didnt have a CS...

I saw this graph at the start of the season but, it is somewhat misleading.

We can't say with any accuracy if Baines would have received the same number of bonus points or not because this wasn't broken down match by match, but rather it looks at the season as a whole.

A good example of how this skews results, would be to look at Coleman's total BPS awarded this year.
12 of his 41BPS (30%) came in one match. As a result, Coleman has only received 4bouns points.

If a player gains 15 or 50BPS in a match, he's still only eligible to get an extra 3 points added to his total score.

An own goal doesn't really count. Made 3 tackles, an assist & normally has a base of 5 BPS so luck of the draw that the other scorers failed especially Aguero.

It's a little galling that I've missed out on this run of form, but I take comfort in the fact that more and more people are accepting he's a genuine option. To be fair he's always done well in my team previously - one of the reasons is his ability to mop up bonus points in tight games.

I think I was probably a bit lucky with my ownership in the past - on and off at the right times, although he's always been worth his price throughout the season. His totals are deceptively low due to ACON duty interrupting his seasons.

To illustrate the point, here are Yaya's bonus points under the new system (BPS) vs the old system (PPI)

        ---------BPS---PPI
        GW1----2-------1--
        GW2----0-------0--
        GW3----3-------3--
        GW4----0-------0--
        GW5----1-------2--
        GW6----2-------2--
        GW7----2-------0--

Only in the last game has he got bonus he wouldn't have picked up under the old system (and it was very close)

Yaya isn't a beneficiary of the new system in my opinion.

Little difference. I pick the the great passing CB's, and next thing i know, one of the fullbacks has got an assist. It's mostly luck, there isn't any policy for players to get because of the new BPS system imo. Only system that's truly influenced the players people chose was the man in the stands.

Only defenders for me, go sort the All the players in FPL, and you can see only Baines, Davies and Walker are not CBs from the top 10 defenders, BPS-wise.

Yaya is the top BPS earner but is he worth 9.4 mil now?

Studge is the second highest BPS receiver and he's benefitting from playing centrally, just like Giroud. Nothing's changed much.

I had a cheap defence last year , spent most of my money in midfield and up front.

This year, due to the BPs favouring defenders, I spend alot more in defence, having quite a few premium defenders.

Also, I never had CBs last year, all my defenders were full backs ( unless they were bench fodder ).
But due to BPs favouring CBs and their pass completion rates, I have brought in CBs, like Vidic and Terry, defenders I would've never brought last season.

The one change is that it's made me consider centre backs instead of wing/full backs for my defence. Fonte instead of Clyne, Terry over Ivanovic, Vertonghen over Walker. I'd played defenders who could get assists and attack down the wings because that was the only way to profit from them - now defenders can get more points for...well, being good defenders.

A man is getting into the shower just as his wife is finishing up her shower, when the doorbell rings. The wife quickly wraps herself in a towel and runs downstairs. When she opens the door, there stands Bob, the next-door neighbor.

Before she says a word, Bob says, "I'll give you $800 to drop that towel."

After thinking for a moment, the woman drops her towel and stands naked in front of Bob.

After a few seconds, Bob hands her $800 and leaves.

The woman wraps back up in the towel and goes back upstairs. When she gets to the bathroom, her husband asks, "Who was that?" "It was Bob the next door neighbor," she replies.

"Great!" the husband says, "did he say anything about the $800 he owes me?"

Sorry posted on last page before I knew a new one had been posted 😉

What initial squads would have the highest and lowest team value now if no transfers had been made?

If you had started out with a squad of Mignolet(5.5+0.3), Boruc(4.5+0.2); Coleman(5.0+0.6), Fonte(4.5+0.5), Zabaleta(6.0+0.4), Terry(6.0+0.3), Whittaker(4.0+0.2); Ramsey(5.5+1.1), Barkley(4.5+1.0), Yaya Toure(8.5+0.9), Ozil(10.0+0.6), Ben Arfa(7.0+0.3); Giroud(8.5+1.0), Sturridge(9.0+0.9), Rooney(10.5+0.4) plus 1.0 in the bank and made no transfers, then your team value now would be 108.7. Of course, Ozil was not available from the start, so you would have needed someone else to hold his place until he was.

    If however you had started with a squad of Mannone(4.5-0.2), Viviano(5.0-0.2); Rat(5.0-0.5), Evans(5.5-0.5), Cuellar(4.5-0.4), Yoshida(4.5-0.4), Hudson(4.5-0.4); Zaha(6.5-0.9), Mata(10.5-0.9), Willian(8.5-0.8), Luis Alberto(6.0-0.7), Kagawa(8.0-0.7); Ba(8.5-0.9), Aspas(7.0-0.7), Kone(7.0-0.7) plus 4.5 in the bank and made no transfers, then your total value now would only be 91.3.

I only had 2 of these players in my initial squad - Mignolet and Sturridge. The current world number one had 5 (Mignolet, Zabaleta, Yaya, Ramsey and Sturridge). Can anyone beat that?

Weird that the two have an identical difference from 100.0 (+/- 8.7)

With the way so many more players have been falling than rising, I'm a bit surprised the difference between the two isn't bigger. I would have expected the depreciating team to have dropped by more than the appreciating team rose.

Although the number of fallers is greater than the number of risers, this is partly compensated by the fact that the average riser has risen by 0.36 but the average faller has only fallen by 0.23.

    Rooney owners,

Let's give him 2 more GWs to prove his worth (SOT, STO).

If he fails to deliver, then Roo --> Kun in GW10 (NOR, sun, TOT, SWA). Come follow suit.

And also with the upcoming arrival of silva and walcott and the urge to keep michu in team; people have to make sacrifices...

I can only hope Coleman's inevitable failure to have Wales qualify from the group, doesn't end up exacerbating Ramsey's knock. Though it only looked minor to me anyway.

The last thing I need from this international break is having to take two or three hits just to put a team out for the next couple of game-weeks, just before the fixture rotations kick in around GW11-12.

It was months before I bothered reading any of the articles and months more before I realised the comments below the articles could sometimes be even more useful.

I was looking for a list of set-piece takers in google and was redirected here. It took me a while to figure out that it wasn't the only thing that this site offered!

I had noticed that most of the overall leaders were in the Fantasy Football Scout league, but I assumed that it must be a magazine. It was only at the end of my first season that I googled it and found that it was actually a website. It is no longer a secret though since The Scout started writing on the FPL website.

I think some other FF player must have mentioned it, but I honestly can't remember. I got here about halfway through one season about three or four years ago. It seems longer.

Haha, I actually thought about this last night before I went to bed. Was planning to ask the exact same question today. 3 years ago I googl'd for Fantasy Premier League cheats myself 😛

Two seasons ago (my first season) I was reading the Scout articles on the FPL website for 12 weeks before I noticed the "The Scout is provided by Fantasy Football Scout". Clickety click, and here I landed.

Found the year when Drogba had Malaria or some sort of injury. I googled "Drogba injury latest".

And I'm still stuck in this hell hole called FFS.

I decided to take FPL more seriously 2 years ago and had this 'novel' idea to search for a website dedicated to FPL as I was a little obsessed even as a casual (can't quite believe I had never thought of it earlier). Used a variety of other websites for a few weeks staying clear of FFS because I thought it was for members only. Eventually I worked out it was free and it wasn't long later that I discovered the active posting community.

So, Harry Kane, scores a hat-trick for England Under 21's while Soldado can't score in free play at all - could be an amazing cheap option (4.4) if AVB takes note! 🙂

So I made my transfers at the end of the gameweek just gone, and completely forgot about it being an international break.. Has anyone done the same? I've been extremely unlucky with injuries this season, I hope it doesn't come back to bite me on the butt!!!!!!!!!!

I've done all my transfers at the beginning of game weeks for 3 years and never had a problem. All I've had is price increases.
