We continue the countdown to the new Gameweek with the regular refresh of the Watchlist rankings – our take on player recommendations for the next four to six week period. First up, we cast an eye over Goalkeepers and Defenders as Swansea’s rearguard earn promotion, along with the Fantasy royalty within Everton’s back four. As always, our current rankings are available in your sidebar. Read on for the thinking behind the very latest.

The Goalkeepers

Swansea’s Michel Vorm climbs to the top of the Goalkeeper rankings with a potentially profitable run of games ahead. Three home fixtures (SUN, WHM, STO) and trips to Cardiff and Fulham in the next five should give Michael Laudrup’s side plenty chance of recovery after their loss at Southampton. Injury doubts still linger over the likes of both Ashley Williams and Ben Davies in the back-four and that could impact on Swansea’s clean sheet potential. Similarly, Europa League fatigue could also play a part but that’s not likely to bite until Gameweek 11’s home encounter with Stoke which follows a trip to Russia for Matchday 4. Despite these caveats, if Williams can be restored to the Swans’ defence, Vorm should be in line for profit from now up until the end of October to reward investors.

Simon Mignolet drops down to second due to a combination of Vorm’s kinder fixtures and Liverpool’s recent downturn in resilience. Having started the season with three successive clean sheets, the Merseysiders have now conceded in each of their last four – nevertheless, as the only backline option to have played every game under Brendan Rodgers, Mignolet will be looking to take advantage of three favourable fixtures in the next four.

Brad Guzan is this week’s big climber due to a schedule that hands Villa four home games in the upcoming six. With two clean sheets in the last three, the 5.0 priced stopper is already eight points clear of any Villa defender thanks to his heroics between the sticks. The form keeper in the FPL, Guzan should provide ample save points should the shut-outs dry up. As we’ll see, however, there are options in the Villa back four that also hold appeal.

Chelsea’s Petr Cech also has a quartet of home fixtures in six to boost his chances of defensive returns. The Blues are second only to Southampton for goals conceded this season so far – Cech has been beaten just four times. However, with a trio of goal threats amongst Jose Mourinho’s back-four, he’s likely to be overlooked by many in favour of a Blues defender. Arsenal’s Wojciech Szczesny has four favourable fixtures in six but with just a single clean sheet to their name this term, Arsenal have been far from convincing at the back.

Artur Boruc and Hugo Lloris tumble in this week’s refresh. With four away games in six, Boruc, in particular, looks hard pushed to maintain the resilience which has seen him beaten just twice this term – trips to United, Arsenal and Chelsea, in addition to a midlands derby against Stoke at the Britannia, may see his owners contemplate an alternative. Lloris will still be licking his wounds after the Gameweek 7 home thrashing by West Ham and has Everton, United and City to follow – with goal threats and bonus potential in both the Saints and Spurs back-fours, save points could be their main source of profit.

With a single clean sheet in five, United’s David De Gea has failed to justify our faith as United struggle to gel under David Moyes. The Spaniard’s security of starts keeps him in our thinking, as does three home games in four, albeit one of those fixtures has Arsenal roll up to Old Trafford. John Ruddy and Asmir Begovic prop up this week’s rankings – with one clean sheet in the last four apiece, neither have offered much to shout about in recent matches but both have three strong home games in the upcoming six to make amends.

At the budget end of the market, Hull City’s Allan McGregor offers a 4.5 alternative to Southampton’s Boruc: he has form, although trips to Everton and Spurs up next look unlikely to see his recent run of returns maintained. Given the schedule, those shopping for a new stopper should consider the extra spend on either Vorm or Guzan in order to seek out a secure starter and potential differential.

The Defenders

Leighton Baines rises to the summit this week in light of Everton’s kind run of opponents – starting with this weekend’s Goodison clash with Hull City. The Toffees have four home fixtures supplemented by trips to Villa and Palace in the next six to aid a return to form after losing their unbeaten record at City last time out – Baines’ attacking potential and propensity for picking up bonus points justifies his lofty price tag in our estimations and has him ranked above team-mate Seamus Coleman.

Branislav Ivanovic is, perhaps controversially, our Chelsea defender of choice. The Serbian may have been overshadowed by John Terry in recent weeks but remains a greater goal threat than his skipper – with David Luiz also in the mix, though, there’s plenty on offer at the back for those eyeing up Jose Mourinho’s defensive options ahead of a superb run which sees them take on eight of the bottom 10 in the next 11 Gameweeks. It’s hardly a break from the template defence but it’s difficult to justify going without a Chelsea defender for the next six given their potential at both ends of the pitch.

Swansea’s schedule and current injury situation is enough to warrant Chico’s top billing amongst Michael Laudrup’s backline. Highlighted in Part One of our recent Members articles on the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) Bonus Points System, the centre-half looks likely to benefit if his side can nullify their opponents’ threat. At 5.0, he’s your option should you push back on Vorm between the sticks.

Tottenham’s Jan Vertonghen falls from last week’s summit. While three of the next four look profitable, City and United in Gameweeks 12 and 13 are far from enticing – nonetheless, the Belgian remains our favoured route into a Spurs backline that had, until the previous Gameweek, shipped just two goals. Vertonghen has accrued bonus points in every match his side has kept a clean sheet and offers a greater chance of attacking points than any of his defensive team-mates. Kyle Walker, at 6.1 and rising, remains the most viable alternative.

Nathaniel Clyne’s budget price tag keeps him in the mix in spite of Southampton’s tricky away trips in the next six, while Nemanja Vidic gets the nod as our United defender. Patrice Evra runs him close after an impressive showing against Sunderland last time around. The left-back has seen a recent drop to 6.4 in the FPL and could soon displace Vidic as the optimum route into Moyes’ back four should we see further rotation of the Serb and more attacking intent from the Frenchman following his assist in the win at the Stadium of Light. United’s defensive form remains a concern, although the next three – against Southampton, Stoke and Fulham – looks to provide a platform for recovery.

Everton’s enticing run of games brings Seamus Coleman into consideration as a cheaper alternative to Baines – the right-back will be hoping to improve upon a record which has seen him fail to produce any attacking returns since the season opener. Stoke’s Marc Wilson offers a cheaper alternative to his mid-priced defensive team-mates and is looking to prosper from this season’s central midfield berth. To be honest, this was a close call with Robert Huth’s goal threat almost seeing the German earn Watchlist recognition.

Further down, Ron Vlaar’s security of starts and ability to steer clear of injury earns him the nod as our Villa defender. While Guzan’s save points have proved more valuable thus far, Vlaar is available for 4.4 in the FPL – the only defender below the 4.5 price point who looks secure and with four home fixtures in six. Antonio Luna offers another assured alternative in the Villa ranks for just 0.1.

Arsenal’s Laurent Koscielny returned to full training for France yesterday and has recovered after last week’s injury worry – the centre-half edges out fellow Arsenal man Per Mertesacker here, whilst three road trips in four may prove problematic for Pablo Zabaleta, given that City have conceded three goals in two of their three away games so far.

Jose Enrique’s switch to the left of Liverpool’s midfield in a 3-5-2 keeps him bubbling under in the rankings but he’s suffered a drop this week in light of the fixture list and doubts on his security of starts. Aly Cissokho’s return from injury could increase the competition for places on the Reds left, whilst Glen Johnson’s imminent comeback would also give us a cheaper differential option on the opposite flank for Brendan Rodgers’ side. Enrique remains a factor, then, but look for Johnson’s arrival next week should he figure at Newcastle.

If you’re intent on shopping at the very bottom of the budget brackets, then the Hull pairing of Liam Rosenior and Abdoulaye Faye remain the most worthy options at 3.9 apiece – we’re not expecting their recent form to continue given they have two away trips up next, while James Chester’s impending return will cause a shake-up, with Faye most likely to make way. Crystal Palace have three in the next four at home, bringing Joel Ward into consideration, while Carlos Cuellar, at just 4.1, could be a benefactor of Gus Poyet’s arrival if he can regain his Sunderland starting berth.

Bad move for England to drop Lampard for Carrick.

Lampard is a threat for 90 minutes, Carrick only goes sideways 🙁

      I disagree.

Lampard and Gerrard are slow on the ball, slow off the ball and neither understand how to play short passes. Everything is always 50-50 balls and long balls that lead to nothing.

      I'd play a Carrick-Wilshere pivot.

I'd be going for Gerrard-Wilshere. Gerrard can and has been playing the "Carrick role" better than him so far this season.

I'd be inclined to disagree. I still think Carrick has been playing well, it's just he hasn't had the support. I'm not such a massive fan of Gerrard in internationals. I think you have to play differently, and Gerrard is outdated. Although he does put in a great free kick.

Wilshere cant even establish himself at Arsenal this campaign. I`d like to see a 3-man midfield from england with Carrick/Gerrard and Rooney in the space behind Sturridge, with Townsend and someone on the left.

He is still coming back from injury, and isn't 100%, but he can still play the short game better than Gerrard and Lampard. I think he would really enjoy playing with Carrick.

Meh. He`s obviously got better movement speed and penetration, but he`s an inferior passer and finisher to both of them, and he does a lot of stupid shit which creates problems. It`s not his time just yet.

I would too if Wilshere had any form. Gerrard has learnt to play short passes under Rodgers but seems to feel the need to play long balls for England. Gerrard and Carrick for me tonight.

Lampard and Gerrard both still play like they are 24, they get too far forward and can't get back when the other team break. Carrick knows how to play CM properly, sit back and dictate the play - only move into the box when you're sure your back is covered.

Pretty unfair statement, imo. Lampard and Gerrard never were the types for that anyway. Box to box midfielders that score goals and create chances arent supposed to do that either, thats why you have your Carricks and Essiens and Lucas`s. Sure theyve lost their legs a big as they got older, but to say that Carrick knows how to dictate the play and Gerrard/Lamps doesnt, just doesnt make sense.

I did't say they couldn't i said Carrick knows how to do it properly. Despite what Gerrard and Lampard have done previously what they are being asked to do now is to play CM, they are not required to or capable of doing box to box anymore. They seem to forget this when playing and bomb forward when they shouldn't which costs the team. Which is why Carrick is a better pick, he is more positionally disciplined.

Have you been watching Carrick in the last 12months?

One of the best deep lying midfielders in the prem consistently week in week out over that time frame. Lampard a decent player too, don't get me wrong, but a decent move IMO.

He came on, didnt close down the attacker (nor did Gerrard fwiw) and they scored.

I wouldnt start Carrick against Poland. He isnt a defensive midfielder. We dont really have one in the squad unless he went with Jones OOP.

I`d like to see Jones as a cdm, i actually think that`s his best position. Carrick/Gerrard might be too slow against your Spain and Brazil, but against Poland @Wembley they`ll be looking to control the game, which he`d be well suited for, imo. Tbf Gerrard doesn`t really close down a lot of people anymore :/

Jones Gerrard and Lampard would be the perfect central 3 imo. Wilshere can come in and replace either of Gerrard or Lamps and Carrick can cover Jones.

Yeah i tend to agree. Jones covers a lot of area, and he`s a kind of a havoc reaker. Tbh i`d be looking to replace Lamps with Wilshere or Milner, for some extra energy, atleast until Lamps regains some momentum. Been poor this campaign.

I am biased because Im a chelsea fan. He has been pretty solid for us this season. The thing with Lamps is he is always likely to pop up with a goal. That is invaluable in games like this. Wilshere has been poor this season imo and Milner gives you a lot of energy but not a lot else.

Im sure that there is this kind of thing every year at this time of year.

"UK expects worst winter since records began"

        Then in the summer

"UK braced for heatwave and record temperatures"

In reality we get a couple of cold days, a couple of hot ones and then the rest is made up of typical english weather, not particuarly hot, not especially cold.

Unless you plan a BBQ then of course the heavens will open and you will be forced to cook under an umbrella in gale force winds.

Repost as put it on last article by mistake (thanks to Quimby for commenting though)

I've still got my FT for this week but its starting to itch, i'm fairly happy with my squad but i'm wanting to Ramires in the next few weeks as his underlying stats suggest he's due for decent haul.

The transfer would be Paulinho > Ramires but it just seems a bit redundant as Paulinho's stats are a bit similar but Chelsea's fixtures will be better till the end of the year. Is Ramires likely to score any better than Paulinho over the next 10 games?

    Should I stick or twist?

I actually like the Ramires punt, but like you said yourself seems a bit redundant. Both have silmilar roles and stats, both play for teams that aren't quite firing in attack but have decent fixtures ahead.

So I'd sit on that one for now

So your logic is that because he scored today, surely he`ll score against a weak side, given the opportunity? That`s kind of not how football works. Idk how much you`ve seen Chelsea and Cardiff play this year, but Chelsea haven`t excactly been superb, albeit Oscar have been maybe their best player, but Cardiff are no pushovers.

£0.2m short of that move, sadly. I'll have to do Rooney-> Lukaku to afford it. Should I do both moves? Will be a 4 pt. hit though. 🙁

Nah. Rooney on form, United good fixtures and while Lukaku has proven to be somewhat fixtureproff, Everton face Spurs, Liverpool and United in the next 6, albeit with some tasty fixtures mixed inbetween.

So who should I replace Lamps with? Can't afford either YayaT or Oscar. 🙁 My budget is £8.6m.

If i were you, i`d await and see who plays the internationals later today. If Lamps doesnt play, i think he`ll start against Cardiff. And i think i`d be looking to get rid of Moses before Lamps anyway. He`s on borrowed time, and i`m not sure what Brendan will do once Glen Johnson returns. Guessing/hoping he removes Moses, pushes Hendo in his place, allowing Johnson to return to rb/rm, depending on formation choice. Tbh i`d probably just do Moses -> Januzaj if i were you. I might end up doing that myself!

Captain choice-- Lukaku, Giroud, or Michu?

          Lukaku - form and fixture
Giroud - Fixture and good support
          Michu - fixture x 2, some form

I'm sure this has been done to death......but I don't get on here much these days due to a heavy work load. But are RVP owners holding after his hatty for Holland & with Utd fixtures decent enough.

He's been on my 'to sell' list for weeks but there's always been other issues to deal with.

This week no different, Soldaddy out The Beast in.

If you switch Sturridge and Michu i think you have your order, atleast thats mine and i have all of the above. Coloccini out, and i have that 0-6 in mind from last season.

Colo out is really turning my head as well. A poor, leaky DF just got massively weaker.

Liverpool`s counterattacking manners could very well prove deadly against such a bad defence, particularly if Colo is missing. Sturridge is also in his best ever form, scoring almost every game. And Hull have proven to be quiet resilient, so i wouldn`t be surprised if they got something from Goodison. Ofcourse, Lukaku is a good option this week. Probably most weeks.

He`s half injured and United attacking kinda lagging/Soton defending well, this might be closer than past years. But United have such a good grasp on Soton usually, which is why im keeping the Roonpig in my team.

Nah, i wouldn`t. In all honesty Everton and Lukaku in particular have looked good this year, and Hull/Palace/Villa might prove rewarding for Lukaku owners, Rooney`s a differential, and he`s on form with some great fixtures coming. And i`d get Oscar ahead of Yaya, due to fixtures and i`m kind of waiting for the Yaya-train to stop a bit. And like the others said, if Lamps gets a rest tonight for England, he very well might get picked against Cardiff. I`d save the transfer or get rid of Moses for someone cheaper, allowing you to do Lamps -> Oscar/Yaya later.

too many midfielders for chelsea, but at the moment he seems to be nailed on

bear in mind that he might be rested this week as they play cardiff at home, midweek champions league vs schalke and then man city so if he is to be rested cardiff would be the ideal match for mourinho to do so

But he was going up anyway

Why would he? He`s club captain and has started the last 30 games since recovering from injury.

Haha that was quite the response.

I'm a Dawson owner too, and reckon he will certainly play. He does get a lot of outs on these boards despite his remarkable amount of minutes played.

Chic will be slowly blooded in via the cups I reckon

I don`t own him atm, but i had him for the better part of last season. He was club captain when AVB took control of Spurs, but he didn`t play because he was out of form or whatever. Since he came back into the side, he`s got to have started the last 30ish league games in a row, and he`s still club captain. Chirches/Kaboul are squad players and possibly one day, first team starters. For now, its no question that Dawson/Verthongen are the cb`s of choice.

                    is quite possible!

I'v looked for another 3, and there aren't any. You'll have to go for assisters like Ozil, Silva, Cazorla unless you want to take a chance on Chelsea mids.

Chelsea mids are too much trouble, and I'm yet to be sold on any Spurs attacking player, and Nani is rubbish.

Eriksen might be worth a shout, but i`m still monitoring. He looks to be third last on a lot of dangerous things, which is good for Spurs, not so much for fpl obviously. I`m expecting big things from David Silva this season under Pellegrini.

Although his replacement was Mata, who Mourinho said after the game didn't do well, as he was hauled off before 60. Mata's in Mourinho's good books again now though

He`s taken critisism from Mourinho and recovered from it, looked as lively as ever the past couple of games. Surely he`s back in now. But there`s internationals, travels, and they have CL come midweek. KDB and Willian look poised for starts against Cardiff, imo. Lamps+Ramires and i`m not really sure about the last spot.

^THIS^ I suspect Mourinho will play Willian, KDB and Hazard.

Replace KDB with Mata or Schurrle and that is the likely line up I reckon

Que Ramsey rotation. Arteta back as well and slowly pushing for it.

                  Dear football gods,

The following result would be greatly appreciated. Everton to beat Hull City 1-0 with Barkley assisting Coleman for the winner.

                  That is all, Freddy

What do outsiders think the chances of Arsenal getting Lewandowski would be? Bayern seemed to have moved on in light of Pep liking Muller up top, and he says he'd like to play in the prem.

Lewandowski on a free would probably be the best signing ever right? 😀

Arsenals best ever signing must be Bendner 🙂
