With Gareth Barry escaping from Saturday’s visit of Hull with only a yellow card following his x-rated challenges on Danny Graham and Sone Aluko, it’s left to Newcastle centre-back Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa to take the headlines as we review this week’s disciplinary matters.

Recruited from Montpellier last January as one of the best young centre backs in France, Yanga-Mbiwa has made an indifferent start to life in the Premier League competing with Mike Williamson and Steven Taylor for the right to partner club captain Fabricio Coloccini at the heart of the Magpies defence.

Hauled off at half-time in the Gameweek 6 defeat at Everton, Yanga-Mbiwa was afforded a first-team reprieve at home to Liverpool on Saturday as a result of Fabricio Coloccini’s groin injury. In the lead up to the match, Alan Pardew backed the Frenchman to step up in his captain’s absence but his impact wasn’t quite what the Magpies boss had in mind – dismissed on 39 minutes, with his side leading 1-0 against Brendan Rodgers’ troops.

Out of position and with Luis Suárez lurking on his shoulder, Yanga-Mbiwa was slow to react to a through ball from Daniel Sturridge and in challenging the livewire Uruguayan pulled him to the ground. A clear penalty and the red card for the ‘denial of a goalscoring opportunity’ (DOGSO) means Yanga-Mbiwa will now miss the crucial Tyne-Wear derby next week as he serves a one-match ban. Newcastle will be down to the bare bones at centre back with Williamson and goalscoring debutant Paul Dummett the only available pair unless Coloccini and Steven Taylor recover from their injuries in time to face the basement dwelling Black Cats.

Elsewhere on the Suspension Tightrope it was a quiet day. The sole balancing act – Arsenal midfielder Mathieu Flamini – was robbed of his chance to rack up some minutes on the high wire after a clash of heads with robust Norwegian Alexander Tettey led to him being withdrawn with concussion after 37 minutes. To be fair, he may not have lasted long in his funambulistic foray, considering his collection of four cautions in his previous five games, but Flamini’s absence through injury instead of suspension will shake up a previously settled Arsenal midfield ahead of the midweek visit of Borussia Dortmund, and weekend trip to Crystal Palace.

In Sunday’s game at Villa Park, Flamini was joined by midfielders Ashley Westwood and Fabian Delph, as the hard-pressing approach rolled out by Paul Lambert on a rain-sodden pitch saw both pick up their fourth bookings of the season. Westwood for a nasty challenge on Lewis Holtby early in the game, and Delph for a lunging slide through Andros Townsend in injury time. The Villa duo will now attempt to negotiate next week’s visit of Everton and Lambert will hope to avoid losing such an influential pairing at the centre of his Villa team.

There were also a handful more names added to the ever-growing Tightrope widget at the bottom of the side-bar –that particular pocket of miscreants now bursts at the seams, with 22 players sitting two yellow cards away from a single-match ban. With up to 11 more league games, and a handful of those still with Capital One Cup interests, keeping out of trouble until 2014 will be a tricky task. Ross Barkley, (36.9% ownership) Branislav Ivanovic (29.7%) and Michael Dawson (12.7%)are the headline protagonists, but with Jack Wilshere, Fernandinho, Chico Flores and Ravel Morrison all delivering attacking points this week, it’s an increasingly star-studded list.

Chico the card machine! I thought Baines had three yellows to his name but I guess I am wrong. It just seems like all Baines has done is get me yellows ever since I brought him in 😀

Only 2 yellows for Baines. But plenty of time for him to join the party - especially if he continues his diving antics!

    Differentials: 'The 5%ers'

With my team languishing in '+1 million rank' country its important for me to spot the differentials early and take some risks to climb the rankings and catch the leaders in my mini leagues - so I've built a team of differentials to help me do this. This is a team for any player with less than 5% ownership at the time of selection, if any player then rises above 5% they get ditched.

    GW8 team:
    Player - Ownership % - Points

    Szczesny - 4.9 - 3
    Huth - 2.5 - 6
    Gibbs - 2.7 - 2
    Chico - 1.0 - 9
    Miralles - 2.8 - 13
    Ramires - 4.0 - 5
    Giaccherini - 1.6 - 2
    Silva - 4.9 - 11
    Januzaj - 4.4 - 1
    Negredo - 4.1 - 2
    Bony - 4.3 - 6

    Bench:
    Johnson - 4.9 - 1
    Clyne - 3.4 - 2
    Ba - 0.9 - 0
    Marshall - 2.1 - 0

I put the armband on Ramires to bring his score up to 10 giving a total score for GW8 of 65pts. Not a massive score but pretty good and crucially 4 pts better than my actual FPL team managed.

Notable players that didn't make the squad but scored well are:

    Reither - 2.0 - 5
    Townsend - 3.5 - 10
    Cabaye - 2.8 - 7
    Eto - 0.7 - 11

    Lessons learned:

Miralles has been looking good all year and has finally delivered but with 3 Everton in my side already there's currently no room form him however it may finally be the time to pull the trigger on Ramires and get him in for Chelsea's great run.

Make sure you pick the right Chelsea striker - difficult but would have meant another 10 pts.

Silva and Cabaye are coming into great form so Michu and Paulinho may have to make way if they continue to get outscored.

ok allow me to try and explain this a little better

I was planning to ship Rooney to Giroud in GW10 anyway, so if I sold Rooney for Giroud this week I'm relying on Giroud outscoring Rooney by 4 points this week to justify it as Giroud will be gone again next week. Benteke will come in for Lukaku after GW11.

    So

    a) Keep Rooney this week
    b) Get Giroud (-4)
    c) Get Aguero this week (-4) tougher fixture but allows me to save a transfer next week

What's everyone's opinion on City coverage, I'm going to hold off until after the Chelsea game but afterwards, my key concern isn't money but strikers vs midfielders.

On the one hand there's Aquero, explosive, potential for lots of points but also a slight rotation risk, costs a lot and pertinently - one has to ditch another striker in a season of strikers in order to acquire him - many other options that could do as well. Also a potential captain option.

On the other hand there's SIlva who's been in the points more often than not when he plays, definitely not as explosive but probably still fairly consistent points as well as being a midfielder in a season where reliable midfielders are rare meaning it doesn't feel as bad having him when you could have other players, probably never a great captain option.

Thoughts? What's everyone doing for city coverage? Is Negredo in the race?

Silva has his own issues. Also a rotation risk as Nasri could play some games. Silva is also one of those great players who can have a huge impact on a game without doing anything FPL wise, City could score 3 times and Silva assists the assister 3 times

Aguero looks to be getting back towards his best, and at his best he's a 200 point striker

Think I'm going with Silva. Nailed on when fit, cheaper than Kun, and doesn't take a striker spot.

Also, like you say - when he's fit and played, he's scored well.

Was in my team GW1 and well bring him back shortly for sure.

      I've gone Chico at 5m.

If I knew Williams was back I'd have him, but too risky to get now.

Rangel too pricy for me. Davies/Taylor unsure who'll start.

Chico's the obvious choice but he is pretty close to a suspension. Mulling it over..thanks though (:

Chico. He's still 2 yellows off suspension - which will only be the 1 game anyway. Hopefully you have defenders that can cover for him for a week? His fixtures more than make up for the possible upcoming suspension.

Yup I've got a good bench so I guess that's what I'll go with. Will just wait on the Europa League fixture before I make my transfer though.

        Thanks! (:

Im planning to play this lot this GW9
    Migs
    Ivan-Coleman-Clyne
    (C)Ozil-Michu-Barkley-Amalfitanao
    Roo-Studge-Giroud
    Subs: Marshall;Jedinak-Collins-Chester
    MITB:3.0
    FT:1

Planning to save to allow the
Roo & jedinak> Benteke & Silva or Haz
    Good move?
If not what to do with the FT?

      Sounds pretty sound.

I might do Rooney to Benteke this week, but risk Rooney having a good week.

I have 2FTs though, so will need to make a move either way.

ok lads currently got no Swansea or Saints defensive cover. Which would you go for? was planning on Clyne as Saints are arguably the best defensive side in the league atm, but Swansea have nicer fixtures for longer. i was planning on having both Terry and Ivanovic, so if i got a Swansea defender I'd either only have 1, or I'd sell Kolarov. What say you

Soton has FUL sto HUL in the next 3, so the fixtures are also nice IMO. And I rate Saints defence higher than Swansea's one.

I'd still go for Clyne. He has also some assist potential. He even had a goal attempt vs Utd 😯

yeah and he's cheap bench fodder when the fixtures turn

but do you prefer Kolaorv or a Swansea defender? i think as long as Kolarov is still first choice he's worth holding on to.

Someone mentioned about Baines that if you are gonna get him then you pick him from the start and keep throughout the season because his scoring is erratic and unpredictable. I think Michu is quite similar this year in that he'll randomly get a brace every few weeks rather than a decent score each week and although his scoring will be more predictable than Baines he will still leave you questioning how he managed to not score or assist in some matches, i.e this week.

I'd be looking to downgrade Rooney to someone like Benteke and use the funds to upgrade Lamps to Haz or Silva.
