With Gareth Barry escaping from Saturday’s visit of Hull with only a yellow card following his x-rated challenges on Danny Graham and Sone Aluko, it’s left to Newcastle centre-back Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa to take the headlines as we review this week’s disciplinary matters.

Recruited from Montpellier last January as one of the best young centre backs in France, Yanga-Mbiwa has made an indifferent start to life in the Premier League competing with Mike Williamson and Steven Taylor for the right to partner club captain Fabricio Coloccini at the heart of the Magpies defence.

Hauled off at half-time in the Gameweek 6 defeat at Everton, Yanga-Mbiwa was afforded a first-team reprieve at home to Liverpool on Saturday as a result of Fabricio Coloccini’s groin injury. In the lead up to the match, Alan Pardew backed the Frenchman to step up in his captain’s absence but his impact wasn’t quite what the Magpies boss had in mind – dismissed on 39 minutes, with his side leading 1-0 against Brendan Rodgers’ troops.

Out of position and with Luis Suárez lurking on his shoulder, Yanga-Mbiwa was slow to react to a through ball from Daniel Sturridge and in challenging the livewire Uruguayan pulled him to the ground. A clear penalty and the red card for the ‘denial of a goalscoring opportunity’ (DOGSO) means Yanga-Mbiwa will now miss the crucial Tyne-Wear derby next week as he serves a one-match ban. Newcastle will be down to the bare bones at centre back with Williamson and goalscoring debutant Paul Dummett the only available pair unless Coloccini and Steven Taylor recover from their injuries in time to face the basement dwelling Black Cats.

Elsewhere on the Suspension Tightrope it was a quiet day. The sole balancing act – Arsenal midfielder Mathieu Flamini – was robbed of his chance to rack up some minutes on the high wire after a clash of heads with robust Norwegian Alexander Tettey led to him being withdrawn with concussion after 37 minutes. To be fair, he may not have lasted long in his funambulistic foray, considering his collection of four cautions in his previous five games, but Flamini’s absence through injury instead of suspension will shake up a previously settled Arsenal midfield ahead of the midweek visit of Borussia Dortmund, and weekend trip to Crystal Palace.

In Sunday’s game at Villa Park, Flamini was joined by midfielders Ashley Westwood and Fabian Delph, as the hard-pressing approach rolled out by Paul Lambert on a rain-sodden pitch saw both pick up their fourth bookings of the season. Westwood for a nasty challenge on Lewis Holtby early in the game, and Delph for a lunging slide through Andros Townsend in injury time. The Villa duo will now attempt to negotiate next week’s visit of Everton and Lambert will hope to avoid losing such an influential pairing at the centre of his Villa team.

There were also a handful more names added to the ever-growing Tightrope widget at the bottom of the side-bar –that particular pocket of miscreants now bursts at the seams, with 22 players sitting two yellow cards away from a single-match ban. With up to 11 more league games, and a handful of those still with Capital One Cup interests, keeping out of trouble until 2014 will be a tricky task. Ross Barkley, (36.9% ownership) Branislav Ivanovic (29.7%) and Michael Dawson (12.7%)are the headline protagonists, but with Jack Wilshere, Fernandinho, Chico Flores and Ravel Morrison all delivering attacking points this week, it’s an increasingly star-studded list.

So I'm figuring out how to get Aguero / Silva + Bernteke into my team. A or B?

    Option A

    Suarez > Aguero
    Lukaku > Benteke
    Kosc > Clyne / A N Other

    Option B

    Suarez > Aguero
    Barkley > Silva
    Kosc > Clyne

    FWIW, current team is

    Mig / Harper
    Davies / Coleman / Kosc / Dawson / Turner
    Barkley / Michu / Hazard / Ozil / Ramsey
    Suarez / Sturridge / Lukaku

I'm happy to see Barkley go, but I'd be loathe to lose Ramsey given his form.

A strong dose of the clap would be ideal and would surely have him hauled out of the team?

I was initially all for Moyes being the United manager and given time to build a squad, make a few signings and then see how United are doing by Christmas next year before being judged. However all these 'knocks and niggles' are a pain in the t1ts for a fantasy manager. It was ok at Everton when it was Osman and Distin but RvP and Vidic is a different game. Sorry big man but get to ...

He actually says that in the book. Says it's Moyes problem now, which is a it unhelpful.

Blames his agent more than Rooney, but still thinks Rooney was out of line. Supposedly once asked Ferguson why he didn't buy Ozil. Fergie says he lost it with him.

    The Baines conundrum:

Got him 3 weeks ago on a WC for scores of 0,1,1.

Patience is running thin. I know he is a long term player who produces returns when least expected.

But who long can you give someone who takes up close to 8m and returns what a 3.9m defender would?!

Thoughts on (If baines fails to deliver this week) :
    Baines + Barkley + Giroud ----> Faye + Silva + Aguero (-4) next week.

If you get Baines it's for the season. We have seen time and time again if you hold, through-out the season he will be at the top of the defender pile.
Stick to your guns and keep i say.

If you have Baines you've got to keep and play him for the long-haul for the exact reasons you've given. The transfers you've suggested look pretty good (though Faye will probably lose his place once Chester is back) but, the counter-justification for Baines is; how much would you pay for a MID who is on all set pieces (including penalties) in a top 10 team and who gets 6 points per goal and 4 points for a clean sheet. You'd spend more than 7.6m. It's a matter of context with this guy.

Agree with you, but then its very hard to take all the 1 pointers. Also, the fixtures coming up are very tricky to say the least.
What if this continues for the next 4-5 weeks, surely then there would be no way you could keep him any longer?
So taking that into account, I was considering moving him on.
Faye is just there to finance the other two moves. Have Terry, Dawson, Clyne and Burner as my other defenders.

    Clyne Murner Toure
    Michu Ramsey Hazard Mirallas
    Rooney Suarez Giroud(c)

    Davis Terry Brady Reid

Next week Rooney to Benteke 🙂

Although with 3,7 you could do Eriksen to Ozil, which is safer. You could also go Lukaku to Giroud.

You get one extra free transfer each gameweek, up to a maximum of two. If you WC then the following week you get set back to one even if you had two saved up.

Gonna keep asking this question now and again to get a range of opinions. As embarrassing as it is, I brought in Walcott at the start of the int. break thinking he'd be fit for Norwich. Now it looks like he's out for another 2-3 weeks.

So, this week I've done Kolorov + Arnautovic ---> Clyne + Lallana for -4.

Do I take another -4 to get Wally out for Hazard/Oscar/Silva/Cazorla?

Or do I just stick him on my bench for the next few weeks?

    Mid is Lallana,Janujaz,Michu,Eriksen.

Certainly wouldn't have him benched. Anyone of the other options, (Silva has soon got tasty fixtures) could hurt you. Other factor is how Walcott is brought back, could be very slowly.

When would people suggest the best time to wildcard for other than having several injuries:

    1) In the first few gameweeks once starting XI's have been established (and you might want to completely change a team that now has few starters)

    2) Around now so you have about 3 months, then wildcard then 3 months then Jan wildcard

    3) Around March for a similar reason to 2) i.e spacing it out

    4) As soon as a double fixture comes up

    5) If you think you can't catch the leaders of a mini-league without drastic action

I treat it as something behind a bit of glass, for emergency use. Until a really juicy DGW comes along. I want 40pts from it minimum. Using it early you can find yourself just as stuck again a month later. How many have Eriksen/Lamela floating around? If you used it because you were afraid of getting stranded in the millions fair enough, but just as a tool to gain some team value and make some cosmetic changes seems a waste.

I used mine during last week's Intl break, mainly because a mixture of the above:

      - I had a few injuries
      - After 7 GW's the squads and form players are easier to pick
      - Last year in my ML I was top from GW1 until the end, so didnt feel any pressure to WC, this season I'm 3rd
      - I saved mine last year until April's DGWs, and although it helped, others in my ML were able to build good DGW team's using their FTs

Thanks for the feedback both - I'm with you AC I want to play it now to get the squad right till New Year and it is only the DGW that worry me. But like you say you might be able to save for it and there are only so many you can put in before you have to ship them out again post wildcard.

I have Eriksen floating around! Last chance this week as that Spurs midfield is becoming a lottery...
