Having analysed The Defence in yesterday’s first instalment, we turn out attentions to the centre of the park. Swansea’s strong schedule is enough to help their misfiring Spaniard retain top spot, though a kind looking run of games for City sees their playmaker scramble up the pecking order in this week’s refresh:

Michu remains at the top of the Watchlist, despite a frustrating run of four league blanks. With a run of three games that includes trips to Cardiff and Fulham flanking the visit of a Stoke team struggling for shut outs, Fantasy managers may finally be rewarded for their patience with last term’s 18-goal hero.

David Silva climbs to second place as Manchester City face a vulnerable Norwich at the Etihad. An hour’s outing during the league cup is some concern, however, but with the Citizens keen to bring their title bid back on track we feel the Spaniard is far too instrumental to be rotated. A schedule that also includes trips to Sunderland and a home clash against Swansea in the next four looks profitable for managers who have opted for the playmaker over the more expensive Yaya Toure.

Eden Hazard remains in third place; rested for the Capital One Cup trip to Arsenal, the Belgian looks all but certain to start against a Newcastle side struggling for shut outs. An exceptional run that includes West Bromwich at home and trips to Sunderland and Stoke in the next six may prove ideal as the winger looks to continue the form that has harvested three goals and an assist in the last three – his recent form is enough to keep him ahead of Oscar in our thinking, then, with question marks still remaining over the Blues’ main forward, in spite of Fernando Torres’ last couple of displays.

Arsenal duo Mesut Ozil and Aaron Ramsey complete the top five. With little to choose between their points potential, the German drifts ahead of his budget-friendly team-mate due to a 30-minute midweek cameo, as opposed to Ramsey’s draining 80 minute performance against resolute opponents Chelsea. With the North Londoners keen to banish any talk of losing their nerve, Arsene Wenger will be relying on his two star midfielders to negotiate a tough sequence of opponents that include Liverpool, United and Southampton in the next three.

A fixture against bottom of the table Crystal Palace may be just the catalyst for Stephane Sessegnon’s revival. Subject of a Members Monitor article earlier this afternoon, the Benin international rises further up the pecking order with doubts remaining over Morgan Amalfitano for the Baggies. A price of 6.6 looking all the more appealing as West Bromwich face Aston Villa and Newcastle in the next four – with five home games in eight, Sessegnon could be worth consideration over the next couple of months.

Having accrued more points than any striker or midfielder in his team Adam Lallana’s attacking ability will be crucial to the Saints as they look to navigate a Jekyll and Hyde fixture list. A trip to a Stoke side that conceded four goals in the league cup is followed by a home clash against newly promoted Hull, before back to back trips to the capital to face Arsenal and Chelsea.

An obliging fixture list, beginning with welcoming Aston Villa, looks set to benefit budget option Ravel Morrison as West Ham attempt to return to winning ways. A trip to Norwich and home clash against strugglers Fulham in the next four look profitable for owners of the 4.6 priced former Manchester united man. A home fixture against Chelsea looks less than straightforward but, having masterminded a 3-0 away victory over Tottenham earlier in the season, returns may well be on the cards again.

Marko Arnautovic finally repaid the faith of differential-seeking managers with a well taken free-kick last time out, followed by a midweek cup goal away to Birmingham. Having deployed the volatile Austrian in a number of positions, manager Mark Hughes may have decided to settle on a role in “the hole” behind Peter Crouch. The visit of Sunderland in Gameweek 12 looks particularly appealing; with the Stoke defence still struggling, an attack-oriented approach may be the route to success as the Staffordshire outfit look to negotiate past Southampton, Swansea and Cardiff in the next four.

Budget options Robbie Brady and Andros Townsend round off the top ten, with the Hull winger’s certainty of starts and more pleasing fixture list running Tottenham’s 5.9 priced winger. Right now, however, the injury concerns linger for the Tigers man which has him on the decline, despite big FPL investment this week.

Robert Snodgrass falls just outside; despite impressive statistics backing his performances, the former Leeds man has failed to deliver points and remains a doubt in light of his head knock sustained against United in midweek. Peter Whittingham may be attractively priced at 5.1, but with a string of three blanks, may well be overlooked for alternatives in the same bracket – spot-kick duties and a share of set-pieces boosts his potential, though.

Questions marks over early season favourite Ross Barkley ’s game time reduce the Everton man’s appeal considerably, while a midweek start for fellow youngster Adnan Januzaj may result in bench role as United roll up to struggling Fulham. Finally, Hatem Ben Arfa may not have form on his side, but three home fixtures in four – including showdowns against Norwich and West Brom – for a struggling Newcastle side may be enough to jolt the mercurial Frenchman into action.

    Try again, then, shall we?

    Mignolet, McGregor
    Vidic, Terry, Fonte, Rosenior, Wilson
    Michu, Ozil, Amalfitano, Oscar, Ravel
    Suarez, Lukaku, Benteke

    2 FT £0.3m in bank

So what do I do with this lot of misfiring misfits?

Desperately want Aguero (Lukaku looks the obvious fall guy) but can't get him in two moves unless I downgrade Ozil to Ramsey or Michu to £5.7 or less MF'er.

Considering Lukaku has Palace next week is it really worth firing him out now for Kun?

My heart says get Kun but my head says use the FT's to get my defenders sorted out (Ridgewell and Williams for Vidic and Wilson would be my favoured route here).

Or, just get Ridge this week and save the other for rainy day?

What are you saying, then peeps?

This is my set of moves for this week: G-ru and Michu out and Aguero & Hernandez in...sorry that you cannot do it.

I recommend that you still try to get Aguero...you're right that Lukaku can do well, but the Captaincy on Aggy in any given week has more upside.

            Good luck Nomar.

I really think Vidic will play, and if so that's one of the safest bets for a clean sheet this week. Wilson to Williams is a sound transfer.
I'm 'slightly' nervous about no Citeh too, but no way am I getting back Aguero after last season - I'm sticking to people I know will always play

I don't really have a stand out captain to pick this week. I think I might end up going with Suarez even though he's playing against Arsenal just because how good he is.

Another option is Michu but he hasn't produced in a few games.

I could go a bit ballsy and put it as Ravel Morrison

Or I could bring in Oscar/Hazard and make him my captain

If I had Suarez, I wouln't spend five seconds thinking. What's bad with playing against Arsenal? They have an average English league defence. They would have lost one-two goals easily to Crystal Palace if not for the great day from Szczesny. They have great attack compared to the rest of the league, but defence, it's not more resitant than WBA or Newcastle.

By "defence", I meant tendency not to lose goals, not the overall performance by only two centre-backs or something like that. Altogether, they lost 9 goals and are pretty lucky with this number, with clean sheets only against Tottenham and Crystal Palace. Not leaky to be sure, but not much above league average.

Sorry, but Szcsesny making a couple of saves this season doesn't really mean they would have conceded loads without him. Szcsesny is one of the worst keepers in premier league, and yet that "average" defence has only conceded more than one goal in a match once (against Dortmund) since Villa match marked by 2 penalties and messy defensive midfield "work" by Ramsey and Wilshere. Chelsea match doesn't count in this, it was B squads.

For example, Liverpool has only conceded on less goal, conceding twice against Newcastle, second goal while Newcastle played with 10 men. Liverpool also has conceded 5th most shots per match in league, whereas Arsenal only 12th most. Not amazing number, but still, the potential that Suarez scores a brace at Emirates is quite small. I'd much rather have Hazard at Newcastle. More potential that Chelsea scores twice, and Hazard will be the fittest man on the pitch, probably tearing his old friend Debuchy a new one as he was amongst the numerous players from Newcastle's first XI who played a whole 120 minutes midweek.

Well Rodgers has just said he loved how Gerrard and Henderson were getting forward and on the ball around the box. It's a new tactic he's employed with Lucas always staying back.

Lucas came in and filled that really well today. I thought he was excellent in his performance, as were Jordan Henderson and Steven (Gerrard). They made good forward runs and were always available for the ball. It was very, very good.”

Yeah I have noticed how Gerrard is playing more advanced than I expected in all of the fixtures since going 3-5-2. I expected them to have more of a middle three than a man in the hole when Moses was taken out for Henderson this week and that came true, but it turns out even before that Gerrard was playing quite high. More of a 3-1-4-2 than a 3-4-1-2 if anything.

That said his returns are steady not spectacular and don't depend that much on fixture. A bit of a Silva really.

It's worth noting how every single one of Gerrard's 4 attacking points events came from set pieces by the way. Corner assist, two pens, and free kick assist. Not position dependent.

Nothing wrong with it, but getting 4 sets of attacking points from set pieces in 4 GWs won't continue for the rest of the season, hence regression

Hey I wouldn't usually be a man for taking hits but tempted by this bad boy.

    For -8

    Paulinho ➡ Sessegnon
    Giroud ➡ Aguero
    Wilson ➡ Rosenior

In mind of the changing fixtures lists for Arsenal and Spurs, plus the fact I would captain Aguero I don't think its a bad move.

    Thoughts?

    Sagna--------Mert-------Kos-------Gibbs
    --------------Arteta-----Wilshere
    -----Ramsey-----Ozil---------Cazorla
    --------------------Giroud

    ------------Suarez-----Sturridge
    -------------Henderson/Coutinho
    Cissokho---Lucas---Gerrard----Johnson
    ---------Sakho---Skrtel----Toure

I can't see a cleanie for either team lol. Lots of goals on the cards.

Think Pool will have a lot of joy in front of goal with Flamini out and Suarez/Sturridge ideally suited to the counterattack where Arsenal have been horribly punished of late.

I think Arsenal's best hope is putting Liverpool's central midfield out of the game, with Cazorla and Ramsey drifting inside to dominate the centre through numbers. If we press them hard I think we can show the cracks in that midfield trio.

Might see Pool knocking it long to Suarez and Sturridge. The more time they spend on the ball, the better Pool's chances.

You gotta think so based on the midfielders there. Not so pessimistic about the game now. Would be worried about how Suarez & Sturridge up against those center backs though, disaster waiting to happen.

Also getting nagging doubts about Giroud getting a goal against them. Lacks pace and finishing has been off.

Cissokho looks ropey defensively imo but could trouble a mobility limited Sagna imo. I think GJ can be pretty beastly going forward, Gibbs will have to watch him carefully. At least Gibbs is great attacking wise himself and could pin him down a bit.

Last game Wilshere came in for Flamini at CM from what I recall. Ramsey stayed higher up.

Oh definitely, our weakness is the flanks. You guys definitely have the advantage there. Hopefully we keep the ball enough that you don't get a chance to damage us there. What I'm really worried about is committing too far forward and getting hit on the break.

Yeah that's pretty plausible, Rosicky presses well which is very useful in a game like this. Passing can be pretty erratic though. Tricky one.

Have been watching Ozil's deployment on the right with interest, Wenger seems to be using him there while we lack a natural right winger. Think he started off as a right winger with Bremen actually so at least has some experience there.

Michu is playing away to Cardiff who took the battering of all batterings last weekend (check the stats) and came out of it with a 0-0 draw...Maybe the Swans are a better attacking outfit than Norwich but it's in Cardiff's backyard and they may do well to get the single goal..Ozil is at home to Liverpool who can't keep a cleanie...Hazard is playing against a not Newcastle defence (who knows who might play).....Which just leaves Silva...who i have...so he's at the top...clear..!!..good.

Last post before new article on last post...

    Harper (Migs)
    Coleman, Chico, Clyne (Walker, Faye)
    Ravel, Michu, Ozil, Oscar, (Barkley)
    Giroud, Rooney, Sturridge

0.5m in the bank and 2FTs.

Been quite happy with the side for a while, wanting to give Michu another chance.

Who would be your first priority?

We'll up until this week I have had Giroud from the start but I have brought Aguero in, in the hope Arsenal will start to slow down. At this point in time I'm not really interested in Ozil/Ramsey. Hopefully it won't be a big mistake to go without them.

Tough call... I'm a non-owner, but the kid is in great form! And West Ham have been pretty poor at home thus far. Go with your gut mate. If you think Arsenal can put a few past Liverpool, then I'm sure Ramsey will be involved somehow. If not, spread the risk and play Rav 🙂

I'm a little concerned about losing Rooney but it has to be done to strengthen my midfield. I don't rate Giroud very highly in real life but he seems to be getting attacking returns regularly, so who am I to judge lol

With so many cheaper options (Tekkers, Lukaku, Studg, Nananana Girouuuud), I don't see the problem in getting rid of him. Man U aren't free scoring, and RVP is the man further forward, and even when RVP is out, Lil Pea gets the nod.

Rooney isn't close to essential just yet. Couple of others have made arguments for his explosiveness which I tend to agree. Aguero is close to that and otherwise essential but has been impeded a little by his gametime and injuries. Suarez is definitely essential as it stands.

      A) You got Giroud at 8.5 or there abouts
      B) You got no other problems whatsoever in your team which needs addressin
      C) You got 2 FTs and need to use one somewhere
      D) you are not a knee jerker and will not look to shift aguero out in 2-3 weeks when he inevitably gets benched for one game(he'll play 4 out of 5 usually)
      E) not look back in anger if giroud continues scoring consistently(which he will do - do not think he'll stop just cause you took him out)
If you answered Yes to most of the above go ahead. i'd never do it for a hit though.. ever

    1) Is it worth it to drop Michu or Ozil for Hazard or Silva? Michu has drawn blanks for a month now, even though Swansea due to have a nice set of upcoming fixtures. I still have Giroud and Ramsey in my side.
    2) Worth it to use up my FT to swap Lewis for Boruc so I don't have to start Mignolet who is sure to concede against a confident Arsenal side?

    Thanks!
