Having analysed those teams with Strong schedules over the next four-to-six Gameweeks late last week, the second part concentrates on the less fortunate sides. Two of the top-flight’s tightest defences face their sternest test yet, while a couple of the bottom three look set for further troubles ahead:

Everton

everton12

Roberto Martinez’s men seem to have taken their foot off the gas at just the wrong time. A hugely disappointing stalemate at Crystal Palace last time out was the product of deeper systemic troubles as Everton struggle to rediscover a cutting edge. With the home leg of the Merseyside derby and trips to United and Arsenal in the next four, they can ill-afford to let this rut deepen.

A recent spate of clean sheets to atone for the lack of goals has seen the likes of Leighton Baines and Phil Jagielka hoover up bonus points but these fixtures don’t bode well for a continuation – however, it is a relatively short-term storm that many managers will be minded to ride out. The Toffees’ poor goalscoring form is more troubling, though – they have netted just twice in the last three weeks – and these fixtures may be the last straw for some owners of Romelu Lukaku and Kevin Mirallas. With Ross Barkley’s recently-curtailed game time causing concern, the time may be right to scour the market for a budget midfield alternative.

Tottenham

tottenham12

Defeat at home to Newcastle was not totally without its upside – Spurs were only kept at bay by an extraordinary goalkeeping performance from Tim Krul and their sustained assault on the Newcastle goal offers some crumb of comfort for Andre Villas-Boas. The bad news is that they are staring down the barrel of their hardest stretch of fixtures of the season so far. With a trip to the Etihad next, followed by a home game against Man United and Liverpool three weeks later, anyone hoping to invest in the league’s tightest defence may wish to wait out this upcoming spell.

Kyle Walker has declared himself fit for international duty tonight but he and Jan Vertonghen may be relying on attacking threat to supplement slim pickings from clean sheets. With just nine goals in 11 games, Fantasy interest in Spurs’ attacking assets has waned. These fixtures give us a chance to monitor for signs of life, and also perhaps to glean answers to a few questions .Vlad Chiriches has started the last four games but the jury’s out on who will partner Vertonghen in the middle when Danny Rose returns from injury to re-claim his left-back spot. Likewise, Erik Lamela’s long-awaited start could be of interest if he finds his form – the Argentine offers an option in “the hole” if Christian Eriksen is ruled out with an ankle injury sustained on international duty; reports earlier today suggest the Dane could be sidelined until February with the problem.

Southampton

southampton12

This season’s outstanding budget defence, you won’t find many successful Fantasy teams without at least one of the Saints’ backline in their ranks. Those managers face a conundrum now – the next six Gameweeks include trips to Arsenal and Chelsea and home games against Man City and Tottenham, though showdowns with Villa and Newcastle potentially offer respite.

The second most owned keeper in the FPL game, Artur Boruc will likely be relying on save points, whilst the hugely popular Saints back-four may struggle to add to their current haul of six clean sheets. Adam Lallana is in fine form, with an England call-up to reward his league exploits but these opponents could slow down the pace of his points. With two double figure hauls in three weeks, Rickie Lambert seems to have finally got his season into gear but these fixtures surely dampen any enthusiasm. Managers may wish to monitor Mauricio Pochettino’s men until Gameweek 18 when a more enticing set of fixtures heaves into view.

BE WARY OF

Sunderland
Gus Poyet may have breathed new life into the Wearsiders with a win over City but the schedule remains rather uninviting. Back-to-back away games at Stoke and Villa, followed by home games against Chelsea and Tottenham in the next four may curtail Sunderland’s upturn in form. The fixtures do pick up after that, though, and if the Uruguayan can continue the Black Cats’ progress, cut-price defenders such as Phil Bardsley or even Wes Brown could be worth a look. Up front, Steven Fletcher will be hoping to regain his clinical form of early last season, while Emanuel Giaccherini’s mid-price appeal may persuade those on the lookout for a midfield differential.

Cardiff City
Power tussles behind the scenes are the last thing the Bluebirds need ahead of a schedule containing United, Arsenal and Liverpool in the next six. Such fixtures will delay any potential investment in a defence that had produced a brace of clean sheets prior to the previous Gameweek’s loss at Villa. Managers may use this period to monitor the performances of their budget options in the shape of David Marshall, Ben Turner and Peter Whittingham, while club record signing Andreas Cornelius is also expected to return from an ankle injury in the next couple of weeks.

Fulham
Newly- appointed coach Rene Meulensteen has his work cut out as he attempts to work with manager Martin Jol to rescue the Cottagers from a dire run of form. Games against Swansea at home and West Ham away precede showdowns with Tottenham, Everton and Man City, a schedule that could see them sink further into the mire. Top of the agenda for Jol and Meulensteen will be to resurrect their dormant Bulgarian genius and coax out the goals in Dimitar Berbatov. If they can emerge from these fixtures with form intact, then defensive assets such as Sascha Riether and Brede Hangeland could also be worth investing in, while Patjim Kasami has the potential to be a very useful midfield budget enabler; at just 4.5, he’s started 10 of the first 11 Gameweeks.

I've just noticed Brazil's(Oscar) game is 1.00am GMT almost a day before Uruguay(Suarez) 11pm tomorrow night..Liverpool play in the early k.o Saturday yet Chelsea don't play until the evening k.o...

I think i'm a little more confident in Oscar starting on Saturday or am i wrong?

    any fifa players here?

I just got traore (the 6ft 7 tank), but my crosses seem to always not be able to hit his head, usually he need to do a diving header, or kneel down for the cross.
Is there anyway I can cross the ball to utilise his height advantage more?

Yeah. That's pretty ironic, he's actually too tall? I thought if you hold it down longer it goes higher. You are doing the single tap aren't you and not the double tap for low cross?

Try adding more power or crossing with L1 (early cross) or if you see him at the near post then double tap square (its a near post cross, which is usually surprisingly accurate)

    From bottom of last page...

I've found it very interesting watching limited teams struggle over the last few years with choosing to defend. Ireland for example, where Trapattoni came under constant attack for defending. Pulis at Stoke. Hodgson at England. Of course in all cases you know why defence is preferred; because attacking is seen as too risky and it is not believed the talent exists for it anyway. But in these cases I think you see that choosing to defend has psychological consequences for players and supporters - the fun of the game is scoring goals, so you feel like you've given up on enjoying football.

I've been playing in a football club with 5 mates on FIFA for the last 6 weeks and we set out to play very defensively from the start because of all the skillers out there. And yeah it kind of worked for a while. We were grinding out a fair number of clean sheets amongst the odd thrashing. But we weren't scoring at all regularly and we were beginning to get seriously frustrated, you begin to wonder why you bother playing if the moment you get the ball you're so deep that you have no one in a good position to pass to, and your moves break down long before you get into their box. We were playing a 4-4-1-1 with a deep defensive line and frankly our best chance of scoring was from corners, that was when we got them.

Two nights ago we had enough and switched to an attacking 4-3-3 and we find it so much more fun. We're actually scaring other teams! Entering the box! Having shots! If we sort our finishing out we might even be scoring soon...

I coach HS in the states and there is a big psycholigical impact on players, at least at that level. When we play teams which are much better technically (often) we will set up in a 4-3-2-1 or 4-5-1 and train in that system before the game. My players always take that as an expression of a lack of confidence in them rather than as a tacitcal adjustment to win. Inevitably our opponent will break us down because players at this level don't have the nuance or discipline to keep at it, and when we switch to 4-4-2 or 4-3-3 to chase the game it's like a huge weight has been lifted.

At the HS it is very difficult. Every now and then you can get your opponent frustrated and fighting amongst themselves and nick a goal. But it is very, very rare. I am probably going to drop the tactic altogether unless I have a forward with blow-you-away speed to latch on to any long ball that might give us a chance if we do sit in.

That's really interesting to hear. As an armchair manager it always sounds like parking the bus is the answer but in practice it's more complex isn't.

It's more positive mentally to attack, you feel like instead of playing with fear of failure you're chasing the chance to win.

I think maybe the recent increase in aggressive pressing is also helpful because you feel more involved in the game, particularly if you win the ball back high up the pitch and score.

Different story at the very top levels of football (i.e., Chelsea v. Barcelona) but kids just take it that you don't have faith in them and walk out half beaten already at the kick off. You can find, occasionally, teams with the right psychological make-up or right team leadership to buy into the park-the-bus tactic but not often.

There's been a lot of coverage of the tactic of aggressive pressing of defenders and midfielders, often from goal kicks (Dortmund/Bayern/Southampton). Is this something that can be implemented at high school or is it too demanding physically/mentally?

It's amazing how kids switch off. You really have to fight to keep players' heads in it on what is easily the best chance to win possession - goal kicks. I work on it a lot but then they switch off. One thing that may sound astounding to the UK is how few kids here watch football - even those who are heavily committed to the game. So you can't just say 'hey did you see how Dortmund pressed every free kick in the CL game Wednesday ?' cause no one will have watched it. With my HS girls team, one our first sessions every season is to sit and watch an EPL game.

Pressing high up - off and on (we don't have the fitness to do it full-time) - has been helpful too when I have a team nowhere near as skilled as our opponent. In other words, press for 5 minutes or so, especially an opponents back line (where HS coaches tend to hide their weakest ball handlers) then drop back into banks of 4 for 10 minutes or so, then press. It definitely helps team psychology.

Ah cheers. Like the innovation. I play football 6-a-side and even at that level we've been torn apart by pressing, the entire team falls apart if you hit the source.

Find your opponents' worst ball handler and then only press him when he receives it. I usually watch our opponents warm-up and the first few minutes of a game and decide which 2-3 players we will press.

Probably because of their fixtures and Terry's nailed on-ness and despite Chelsea having had a run of bad form, they have got to start getting clean sheets under Mourinho it is really is just bound to start happening. Plus he can score goals.

I really think this is an awful idea. And 8 point hit to bring in Walcott who is only returning from a pretty heavy injury and selling Walker who, despite their tougher run, is part of the best defence in the league for CSs so far.

Cardiff goals conceded at home this season so far:

    MCI 2

    Good evening my friends.

Some of you will remember that I wrote a little tool last season that grabbed some stats from your FPL page and summed it up and presented.

Anyway, I'm turning it into a Chrome Extension now so that anyone will be able to use it and I would suspect that I can release it fairly soon, possibly to a few people first to help with some bug testing. While at it I thought I'd ask if anyone has any suggestions for featurer they would be interested in?

I'm limited to stuff that is shown either on any of your gameweek pages or your history page, but apart from that we don't really have any limitations.

This is what I have currently:

    - Total captain score
    - Highest possible captain score
    - Captain score as % of overall score
    - Captain score as % of your highest possible captain score
    - Captain score if you swapped all C / VC
    - Number of different captains
    - Total score of unused subs
    - Unused sub score as % of of overall score
    - Total score of autosubs

Last season I also had some information about double gameweeks and bonus points but maybe I'll just give that a miss? Don't think that was particularly interesting to anyone. Or was it?

Most captained player, is that of any interest? Points spent on transfers?

    Thanks

I believe overall Ronaldo is the better player but Zlatan is the better finisher (or at least the more fantastical finisher). It comes down to preference, my primary love of football stems from flair although I point out it has to be flair that serves a purpose, not useless step overs, so any player that pulls of some of the finishes Ibra has I will enjoy watching.

                GW10 - Suarez C - zip / Aguero 18
                GW11 - Aguero C - zip / Suarez 14pts
