Boxing Day confirms the arrival of one heavy-hitting Gunners midfield asset, only for their star middle man to suffer an injury that threatens to trigger a wave of transfer activity. While thousands of Fantasy managers will be occupied by that particular pairing, a certain Saints striker remains largely ignored as he goes on providing ample points for a paltry sum.

The Game Changer

Theo Walcott’s impact on his return from injury has been almost instant. His brace at Upton Park turned the game Arsenal’s way and confirmed that Walcott is back amongst the top-level Fantasy assets available.

In truth, we’ve been crying out for Walcott’s arrival in our season. His record of 14 goals and 13 assists last season pointed towards great things this campaign but, derailed by injury, Walcott’s Fantasy potential has been tempered as the midfield has failed to keep pace with the output of our forwards. Until now.

Four goals in his three league starts suggest that Walcott can compete with the very top midfield assets, surpassing the scoring rate of his much-vaunted team-mates Mesut Ozil and Aaron Ramsey through sheer goal power. With David Silva and Eden Hazard also showing some consistency, focus is back on the expensive midfield targets.

Owned by just 5% of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers, a state of alert was declared with Walcott’s previous brace, mentioned in this article. Today’s returns will heighten that initial interest into a frenzy which is likely to accelerate significantly as January wildcards are laid down.

The Underused

The Gameweek drew focus on our Fantasy forward lines, as we contemplated the gamble of overlooking the devastating form of Luis Suarez. The likes of Wayne Rooney and Romelu Lukaku tempted the armband with so many Fantasy managers boasting one or both in their squads. Indeed, despite the recent injury to Sergio Aguero, few have considered dismantling their “template” strike force – it’s meant that Southampton’s Jay Rodriguez has struggled to get the Fantasy recognition he deserves.

Rodriguez notched a brace and an assist in Southampton’s fine 3-0 win at Cardiff to take him to eight league goals from his last 12 starts. That kind of strike rate, for an FPL fee of just 6.0, allows him to top the “value” rankings on 13.6, ahead of Luis Suarez.

Just as there is no doubt about the established pool of players that make up the typical forward line, there can be little argument on which player offers the best value for those who choose to risk plunging the price brackets.

Right now only 6% have dared cheapen their forward line and take up the Rodriguez option. With further heavy-hitting midfield options opening up, it will interesting to see how the January wildcard changes that particular statistic.

The Selection Poser

Aaron Ramsey’s rise to near essential status has been slowed of late thanks to a harsh fixture list and the potential return of Theo Walcott. Today’s events not only underlined Walcott’s appeal as an explosive alternative to Ramsey, it also saw the Welshman suffer an injury that could signal the first significant bout of sales.

Arsene Wenger has announced that Ramsey’s thigh injury suffered in the second-half at West Ham today, will rule him out for the rest of the Christmas programme. While some will wait for scans and further details, the news will mean Ramsey will sit out matches with Newcastle and Cardiff in the next four days. A Gameweek 21 return on January 13 could be on the cards, although the nature and severity of the injury is not yet clear.

Significantly, the injury comes off the back of a spell that has seen Ramsey return goals in just one of his last eight league matches. While a pair of assists has calmed any panic, that dip in form, coupled with today’s injury, will likely prove the catalyst for sales.

Having risen to 7.6 form an initial value of 5.5, Ramsey has a long way to fall, with thousands set to sacrifice funds when the decision to sell on is made. Again, the January wildcard will bring the Ramsey situation into focus. There’s little doubt that if Ramsey goes into the New Year sidelined, as expected, we will see a lot of movement away from the season’s stand-out midfielder, heading in the direction of Walcott. Current transfer statistics in the FPL already confirm such a trend, with Walcott and Ramsey topping the transfers in and out tables just a few hours after the final whistle.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

    Hi guys, how is everyone today?

    What is the consensus on Ramsey?

    I'm not convinced he will drop all that much in value in the next 2/3 GWs that he will reportedly miss... it will be no more than 0.4m IMO, which means that he will cost around 7.2m +/- to buy back...

    If I sold him now, I'd get 6.7m, which means I'd only actually be looking at losing 0.5m +/- on him if I wanted him backed, which isn't too bad...

    So, a few options here that I'd like some votes on...

    A - Ramsey > Cabaye
    B - Bench Ramsey and play Redmond

    Thanks

        Yeah Cabaye seems to be a great option, and I'm not even concerned by the fixtures...

        I actually think they are good...

        Newcastle have shown they can compete at home with the big teams (beating Chelsea 2-0, drawing 2-2 with Liverpool) and they are in brilliant away form right now, and with (wba whm nor) they are playing some fairly weak teams with shaky defensive home form...

      Have the same dilemma and Redmond on 1st bench.

      Will probably sell because someone bound to get rotated and I don't want my Gabbidon playing against City. That minus points right there will make up for the hit.

      I don't know about your bench but for Ramsey alone I'll sell, he looked off form lately and isn't that much of a threat anymore. Plenty good mid-priced midfielder around

        This is a good point, if somehow Negredo, or anyone else for that matter, got rested then I'd be looking at Ward coming off my bench for his Citeh away match since I also have M.Turner, who is suspended... 😯

        That alone seems to justify making the transfer...

    Theo Wall-E is back on the front page! Accumulating 55 points in just 691 minutes. That's 12.56 points per minute

    To compare

    Ramsey = 13.20 ppm
    Yaya = 14.20 ppm
    Hazard = 13.55 ppm
    Ozil = 13.74 ppm
    Cabaye = 15.05 ppm
    Lallana = 16.34 ppm

    Only Silva is better at = 12.17 ppm (67 points in 816 minutes)

    In most cases, PPM is not always an accurate measure points potential for a player mainly because minutes played can reflect rotation threat, playing time, and injuries.

    But for this case, all off the above players are star players of each team and pretty much nailed on in the starting position so PPM is an accurate representation of points potential.

    Silva and Walcott are heads and shoulders above the other heavy-hitting midfielder and we know their potential. As long as they can stay fit, they will easily be the top scoring midfielders this season.

    Essential.

          Ceteris paribus, ElNino.

          Hard to put in all factors into a statistics. His recent points racking may be because his advanced role (likely) or just his form in general which most player also undergoes.

          But with that in mind, I believe Newcastle switched to 4-2-3-1 only in the last 3 matches for Cabaye?

          29 points in 245 minutes for Cabaye. That's an unbelieveable 8.5 minutes per point from him.

          Thems the breaks, I suppose.

          Appears that we're both relying on Clyne's selection to avoid having to play Ward. Will wait until just before the deadline to watch out for any confirmation regarding Clyne. Should he not be playing, I think I'll have to wear a -4pts and transfer Wilson > Bardsley

            the problem with hits for defenders is that they don't often pay off and you'd be better off just eating the 1 point.

      Haven't decided yet. He's in contention, though. Probably him, Theo, Suarez, or Podolski. That's right. I said Podolski. My gut is singing his praises. Just hope the singing goes on for a while.

    I'm gonna say something that might stir up some debate. I think Podolski might be the best finisher in the league. He's at least up there with the creme de la creme.

      He is absolutely brilliant, lit up the game when he came on last night...

      8PPG average this season, small sample size in 3 games but still not bad, especially after it being the first game back from injury...

        So glad to hear that someone else is aware of his lethalness. I had him last year for a bit, and when he was healthy and played, it was almost a surefire thing that he would return points. I'm 'bout it 'bout it fo' sho'.

      What up, Blue L? I ended up taking the armband off of Hazard and putting it on Adebayor. DARNIT! Guess that's how the cookie crumbles sometimes. And, I take full blame, as I made the ultimate decision.

    I noticed that your starting midfield was the same as mine this week. Well done captaining Walcott.
    What are your thoughts on Oscar? I've held on to him for many weeks, but I'm getting tired of waiting for returns to arrive.

    Ramsey Howard Lukaku on the chopping block, with 2 FTs.

    Thinking of holding Howard (no playing keeper) since it's 1 game, benching Ramsey and doing Lukaku > Dzeko for a 1 week punt (bank other FT).

    Then will have another 2 FT to fix Dzeko + Ramsey in GW20. Thoughts?

        Can absorb 1 Ramsey fall though, and would still want Howard for the run of games after.

        Would play Chester (FUL) and BTurner (SUN), bench Ramsey and get Dzeko. Do think Dzeko's worth the 1 week punt.

      Calculated risk going in to a GW without a starting GK. Might not be too big an issue should there be more score results, than clean sheets

      Couldn't you use the 2FTs this GW, then use the 1 next GW to sort out Dzeko?

        Yea it's a calculated risk. Risky but don't really want to spend a FT on a keeper with WC so close.

        I could use 2 FTs this week and 1 next to sort Dzeko indeed, but want to keep 1 just in case of injuries/rotation issues. Or you reckon best fix Ramsey/Howard now as well?
