With a quarter of the league campaign now gone already, a tip of the hat must go to West Brom who are, relatively speaking, the team of the season so far. With their first four away games being at Chelsea, Liverpool, Arsenal and Man United, many had tipped them as one of the pre-season favourites for the drop, but Roberto di Matteo’s side now sit in fourth place in the table and are showing a remarkable character and consistency to their performances.

Last week they battled back at Old Trafford to earn themselves a draw and this afternoon saw the Baggies fall behind early on to an unfortunate Scott Carson own goal in their home encounter with Mark Hughes’ Fulham. Once again, though, Di Matteo’s men hauled their way back into the game and despite the continued absence of star forward Peter Odemwingie, they still managed to grab a couple of goals to defeat the Cottagers by the odd goal in three.

With three wins and two stalemates at the Hawthorns they are undefeated at home all season and unbeaten in the league since August, despite recording just one clean sheet in the nine games to date.

Of the three promoted sides, Blackpool’s open, attacking play seems to be grabbing most of the attention, whilst Newcastle’s early season promise has somewhat tailed off to be replaced by off-field antics at present. West Brom, on the other hand, continue to play their football whilst showing the ability to battle that Ian Holloway’s men perhaps lack.

Great credit must go to Di Matteo, who seems to have learned rapidly and impressively from the club’s Stamford Bridge battering on the opening day of the season. Granted, a draw for either Arsenal or Man United tomorrow will knock the Baggies down a place or two, but until then at least, fans will take great delight in the fact that West Brom stands shoulder to shoulder with the so-called elite in the Champions League placings, their highest ever position in the Premier League.

    15 Mins until MOTD 🙂

I think there should be a rule on FPL that you have to play 5 Defenders for at least 2 GW'S during the season, if not then you either face a heavy points deduction or the last two GWs of the season it is compulsory. Haven't decided which yet.

Seems in most of my competitions, that nothing for Tevez and a clean sheet for United will do very nicely tomorrow.
I'll happily cheer on the dullest of the dull and some 0-0 draws tomorrow.

Got left bottom of last page.

Alright, just some thinking out loud. I’ve got a season changing decision to make here. Messing it up will probably set me back a really long way.

    Here goes:

Fabregas has to come in, I just can’t see another alternative unless he gets injured in the next week (please get injured!) He’ll come in for two juicy home fixtures where Tevez and Drogba both play away, and would make the perfect captain if he’s fit and firing.

To fund Fabregas though, I need to lose one of Malouda or Cole. It’s sensible to choose one or the other, because Chelsea don’t have the greatest fixtures, and having so much money in Chelsea would most likely not be worth it. So who to drop?

    Plan A

    GW 10
    Cole > Simpson
    Nasri > Fabregas

    GW 11
    Alcaraz > Bosingwa

If I drop Cole, I’d be looking to swap for Simpson, and use the funds to upgrade Alcaraz to Bosingwa. Bosingwa is a rotation risk right? Yes, but if he starts, he’d be a great choice, also with 5.7/5.8 to play with I’d have options of Boateng, Kolarov, O’Shea.

Pros: Keep Malouda, 5.8 defender choices are plentiful, more team value, a better choice if Fabregas gets injured.

Cons: Lose Cole, Bosingwa is a rotation risk, plan is much tighter and less flexible, some necessary defensive crab/downgrading moves needed to accommodate Malouda, Albrighton rots on bench, riskier.

    Plan B

    GW 10
    Malouda > Fabregas
    Albrighton > Ferguson

Doing this would mean that I keep Cole, and upgrade Malouda. I’d have a midfield of Fabregas, Nasri, Nani, VdV for GW10 and 11 where Arsenal have double home games. Then a planned switch from Nasri > Bale to double up on Tottenham’s double home games in GW12 + 13. It’s more flexible too, because I can downgrade Cole at any time to some cheap defender, and use the funds to upgrade my team slowly. Ferguson and Carroll rotate well too.

Pros: Keep Cole, more flexible, playing the fixtures (Nasri GW10 + 11, then switch to Bale GW12 + 13), Albrighton > Ferguson, safer

Cons: Lose Malouda and can’t get him back without a significant hit. This is really the only con I can come up with, but it's a cumulative one. If Fabregas gets injured, I will be getting Malouda back in most likely, and that would be a significant loss in value seeing as I bought him at start price. Value loss is tough, especially as I can see Malouda doing well GW 12+ 13.

I'm edging towards Plan B as I write, but I'm quite scared of losing Malouda, and the 0.5 value, especially as I see him back in my team at some point this season. Anyone care to add to it so that maybe the scales tip one way or the other?

Gerrard > Fabregas is good, but Malouda > Cahill I don't like.

Malouda is a great FF player, and you see how reluctant I am to get rid of him. You should keep hold of him as long as you can.

Defense is good, but you don't have Elmohamady, and he is, for me, a season essential.

I recommend Konchesky > Elmohamady before Elmo goes up again in price.

Longer term, look at replacing Dann and Etuhu. Doubling on Birmingham won't pay off most of the time. Apart from that, your team balance is fine, and you should score well.

essien blocks a certain malouda goal and all drogba has to do for a goal is side step hahnemann, today could have been slightly better

Let's just hope that bonus points judges get sober soon.

Jesus - Shearer is dissecting Cole's performance very positively (perhaps Hansen should have done it): I reckon he awarded the 3 bonus points...

I guess new post means nothing to you. Price change table? Changes haven't occurred yet.

In my FFS Cup matchup it's come down to my Tevez + 12 points vs. Gerrard + Chamakh.
Should be home barring some brilliance from Gerrard and an untimely Arsenal victory over City.

I think ARS vs MC will be low scoring so lets say Tevez and Chamankh equal eachother (though I prefer Tevez)...so it's 12 points vs Gerrard....I like the 12

ARS - CIT will surelly be a high scoring affair, Fabs is back, City to start with 2 up front, City in great form, Arsenal defence really poor. I can easily see it 4-2 like last year.

Once lampard comes back he will be scoring the midfield goals instead of malouda

not sure that's true if you look at last season...

but I don't think Malouda's last 4 games make him a "keeper" over a fit Fabregas or on form Nani etc...

He's just had a tough run of fixtures. He'll always be good for big hauls against the lesser teams though.
